survey of issues conducted at the end of the
project highlighted the need for ongoing grower
support in tacking natural resource management.
This is especially important to enable them to be
more resilient to affects of climate change, as well
as other business/time management issues.

change very quickly in response to a change in
this balance. Information from case study sites
was used to generate a manual on understanding
and managing root zone salinity and series of
information sheet, now available on the HortEx
website: Better Growing Tool Kit: This is a series
of information sheets on soil, salinity and
irrigation management that has been translated
into Khmer and Vietnamese to cater for the high
proportion of English as a second language
growers from these communities, primarily in
protective cropping systems. The tool kit contains
additional information sheets on integrated pest
management, waste management, revegetation
for biodiversity in production systems, and use of
compost.
• Online access to regional weather data and
irrigation budgeting tool: Growers are now able
to access weather station units located outdoor
and inside glasshouses, with online access to
growers via the HortEx website. An irrigation
budgeting tool developed by Rural Solutions SA
for this project is available on the PIRSA web site:

• Waste management: Managing waste streams
was highlighted through grower survey as a
significant issue in the horticulture industry. Two
waste management fact sheets focusing on waste
separation and direction to the appropriate
regional handling facility are available on the
HortEx web site. Some instructional aspects of
these fact sheets have also been translated.
• Managing heat wave events: In the past three
seasons, South Australia experienced the earliest,

Agriculture, Food and Fisheries and PIRSAfunded project Implementing Tools for Sustainable
Agriculture on the Northern Adelaide Plains completed
three years of operation at the end of June.
It was designed to facilitate the implementation of
NRM strategies targeting factors limiting profitability
and resource sustainability in the NAP region.
A survey at the start of the project highlighted that
salinity, soil condition and access to relevant weather
station and irrigation management data, and the
establishment of an effective communication
network, were priority issues for growers.
Major achievements included –
• Establishment of HortEx Alliance Inc: Officially
incorporated in February, HortEx is a not-for-profit
organisation that meets a key communication
objective of the project: establishing a network of
like-minded individuals and organisations to
assist primary producers in achieving best
management practices and natural resource
sustainability. Key stakeholders include grower
groups/associations, local council, government,
research and development and agricultural
service providers. The HortEx website provides
online access to tools and training materials
developed through this project and will continue
to do so for related and future projects.

• Better understanding of salinity and its
management: Root zone salinity is determined by
the balance between addition and concentration
of salt and its removal in draining water, and can
