Jubilee Schedule Available
The theme of this year’s Port Orford
Jubilee Celebration is “Honor &
Remember Our Military”. The Jubilee
schedule is set and the brochure for it
has been printed and being circulated
in and out of town. The Jubilee events
begin on Friday, July 2 with tours of the
Cape Blanco Lighthouse by the Friends
of Cape Blanco from 10:00am to
3:30pm. Later that evening the Theater
101 presents “Parallel Lives” starting at
two week run. The Jubilee Committee
presents “The Substitutes” live in
concert that night at the Community
Building. The Substitutes are known as
Central Oregon’s hardest working band
and they’re coming to Port Orford to
show us how it is done.
Saturday, July 3 starts bright and early
with the Beachcomber’s Square Dance
Club pancake breakfast featuring eggs,
ham, and all the pancakes you can eat.
The Beachcomber’s Cover square dance
club is located on Nicholson Drive at
Milepost 298. The rubber duck race
begins at 9:00am with the ducks being
launched from the Iron Head boat
launch on Elk River Road.
The Riders in the Wind horse riding club
will put on a Freedom Horse Show all
day at the at the Wilbur Green memorial

Buffington Park horse arena starting at
11:00am. There is no entry fee for the
events and food will be served. Also
starting at 11:00am is the annual and
always fun Keg Toss at Dock Beach aka
Dog Beach.
Later than night the Beachcomber’s
swing back into action with plus
dance and south of the Cove Theater
101 presents a second performance of
Parallel Lives.
July 4 is of course the busiest day of the
three day Jubilee with events starting at
7:00am and going through the fireworks
which usually end around 10:30pm.
Events begin with the sandcastle
sculpture contest at Dock Beach
while over at Driftwood Elementary
School the Port Orford Rotary Club
puts on its annual July 4 scholarship
pancake breakfast. All monies raised
at this breakfast go to the Rotary
Club scholarship program and other
community projects.
The two E ticket events are the parade
and fireworks on Sunday with the
parade starting at 11:00am sharp from
city hall to Battle Rock Park. This
year’s parade Grand Marshal has been
chosen and she is Sonja Mason; a great
choice by the Jubilee Committee. Sonja
Mason is our former postmaster in Port
Happy Father’s Day!
Orford and did a fantastic job there for
many years and now is busy helping out
with the Rotary Club and Senior Center
among other activities. We also have a
“Jubilee Queen” this year and her name
is Ali Dunay. And you count on several
politicians’ smiling faces in the parade
as well as your favorite local groups like
the Rotary Club and State Parks and
the fishermen. It’s all good fun and my
favorite part of the weekend.
The Ninth Annual pet show takes place
in front of Pampered Pooches at Tenth
and Idaho Streets. All kinds of pets are
welcome, not just dogs and cats.
Over at Buffington Park there will
be an unstructured local skateboard
demonstration at the Port Orford Skate
Park while up on Coast Guard Hill come
out and enjoy the ninth annual Jerry Can
Races at Port Orford Heads State Park;
an event put on by the Point Orford
Heritage Society. There are plenty more
events over these three days so get
yourself a Jubilee brochure or look for
the complete schedule in this paper on
June 30.
The fireworks begin a little after it
gets dark at Battle Rock Park so figure
around 10:00pm. Seating on the lawn
and rock wall is first come first served

evening and then cap it all off with the
fireworks display which is put on by the
Port Orford Volunteer Fire Department
led by our Fire Chief Gayle Wilcox.
They do a great job and without the fire
department there would be no fireworks.
CCEC Annual Meeting
Employees of Coos-Curry Electric
Cooperative, Inc. (CCEC) are in the
final stages of preparing for the 72nd
annual meeting of the membership. This
year’s annual meeting, to be held July
17th at the Event Center on the Beach/
Fairgrounds in Gold Beach, promises to
be an educational and fun-filled event
for the entire family.
“Be Prepared” is the theme with a focus
on disaster and emergency preparedness.
Local law enforcement, volunteer
firefighters, Curry County’s Emergency
Planning department, Curry Health
Network, Curry County Home Health
and Hospice and Cal-Ore Life Flight
will be on hand to educate members
about the importance of being prepared.
The first 300 members through the door
will receive a “Be Prepared” bag and
vendors will provide some items for the
bags along with information on other
items that should be added to the bag to
ensure members have what they need to
survive a disaster or emergency.
In addition to the Lions health screening
van where members may have their
sight, hearing and blood pressure
checked, the Red Cross will be holding
a blood donation drive. Friends of the
Langlois Library will have a used book
sale with 10 percent of the proceeds
being donated to the cooperative’s
Round Up program to help less fortunate
members pay their electric bills. CCEC
employees are already gathering their
used books to donate to the library
sale. Members wishing to donate books
for the sale may drop them off at the
cooperative’s Port Orford office.
The board of directors will hold a
short business meeting to discuss the
cooperative’s financial condition and
the past year’s accomplishments as well
as what may be expected in the coming

year. Finally, the election results will be
given. Stick around after the business
meeting for door prizes, a light lunch
and entertainment provided by local
musicians. Registration begins at 9:00
a.m. and the business meeting will begin
promptly at 11:00 a.m.
Information packets and ballots are
expected to be mailed June 15th and
must be returned by July 14th.
Ophir Rest Area Open
The Ophir Rest Area which has been
closed since December of 2009 is
now open according to State Park’s
area manager Frank Eckley. The Parks
Department received a Federal Stimulus
grant to upgrade the bathrooms at the
Ophir Rest Area and the contractor has
finished his work after a long delay.
The fixtures were upgraded to ADA
compliant and are made of stainless
steel and the building was painted.
This Rest Area offers convenient beach
access as well as bathrooms, parking
area and picnic benches.

Free the Trees
“Free the trees”, said the youngsters
in Cathy Boden’s wetlands project.
7th graders Millie Redding, Jasmine
Hardcastle, Emily Brokaw and 5th
grader Cameron Hickey gave a
presentation at Rotary on how they have
saved the life of the wetlands behind
Driftwood School.
For the past year, Cathy’s elementary
students have dug out invasive weeds
around trees freeing the willows
from ivy and cleared out nooks for
educational projects and walking trails.
5th grader Cameron Hickey told how
the ivy had pulled down an octopus tree
but now it is growing, stable and “a good
place to read.” Their wetland project
has been a labor of love and they are so
proud to have made it a better place to
go after school. They have also learned
the importance of wetlands in filtering
pollution and providing a healthy
environment for birds and animals.
The children enjoy the clear stream
and built “awesome tunnels” through
blackberries. They are giving little tours
and dream of camping all night this
summer. The students in Mr. Betz, Mrs.
Heckard and Mrs. Weinblatt’s classes
made nature maps and detailed botanical
drawings of closely observed plants.
They have made a huge difference.

accompanied by his wife, Mary. Sam is
a retired Navy officer who has been a
helping with Rotary projects for years.
The Community Garden beds are
finished and ready for planting. 15 are
already taken but there are 5 left and you
can share one with a friend. The cost is
$20 to sign up for a garden bed. Don’t
let the cost deter you if you really would
like a garden, Rotary will help.

Great! That’s more like it folks. When
people start writing letters that means
they are starting to actually think about
things. It’s too bad one of our papers has
chosen to print only one side of a topic.
Let’s try to better define our positions
though. Remember that extremism
seldom generates a positive result.
I find the letters praising the new
development to be especially interesting.
They go so far as to specifically
compliment each other by name.
The problem is that they essentially
say nothing. We are all in favor of a
successful business and any good it
may do for our town. We are also all
in favor of motherhood, apple pie, and
patriotism etc. They remind me of the
high school cheerleaders. . . pom poms,
short skirts and boundless enthusiasm.
Some of them even knew what sport
was being played. The big problem
here, Folks, is that their letters are all
“me”,”me”, “me”, and “he”, “he”, “he”,
and no “we”, “we”, “we”. “Me” is them
and “he” is the developer and “we” is
us, the town. “Me” and “he” will do
alright because their businesses are
not critically “site specific”. “We” will
not do alright because Battle Rock and
it’s “highest use “businesses are “site
specific”. When you mix up site use in
this way there always is a net loss and
in this case that net loser is Port Orford.
Some of you please put this on your
refrigerator door and we will continue.

Robert “Buck” Dezern
Robert Henry “Buck” Dezern, 68, of
Port Orford, passed away on June 11
in Lakeview, Oregon. Buck was born
on August 8, 1941 in Sparrow Point,
Maryland to Otis and Dorothy Dezern.
Buck served in the United States
Navy. He was a commercial fisherman
for Darrell Cobb for many years. He
enjoyed spending time with his friends
and family. He is survived by sisters
Helen, Grace, Lela, Margaret; sons
Dennis, Michael, Otis and daughters
Loriann and Maggie. Buck has 13
grandchildren and many nieces and
nephews. A celebration of life will
be held on Saturday, June 19, from
1:00-4:00pm at the Port and Starboard
Restaurant. Come share your memories
of Buck with family and friends.

Sign-up for a Garden Bed.
After many delays caused by rainy
weather, the Rotary First Harvest
Community Garden is finally nearing
completion. Rotarian’s and others
interested in the project have been
working fervently on available dry days
to get things ready for growing fresh
vegetables in our community. The land
has been cleared, the fencing is in place
and the twenty beds have been built.
“This week,” said Rotary First Harvest
Chairman Bill McArdle, “water lines
will be run and compost and topsoil
will be added to the beds ready for Port
Orford’s gardeners to plant.”
A majority of the twenty beds have
already been reserved but a few remain
and interested gardeners are invited to
come to the next sign up at 5:00 pm,
Wednesday, June 16, at St. Johns
Catholic Church.
The Rotary Community Garden is a
project of the Rotary Club of Port Orford
but beds will be available for anyone in
the community. Gardeners will “rent”
the 8 ft x 4 ft x 16 inch beds for $10 for
the full season and will raise whatever
crops they want. However, each gardener
will be encouraged to give a portion of
their vegetable production to Common
Good for distribution. “The cleared
area is large enough for approximately
fifty beds,” said McArdle, “but we are
starting this year with just twenty beds
until we better understand the needs of
the community.”

the tunes folksinger Steve Montana will
be performing this Sunday from noon
until 2:00pm at the Siren’s Café in Port
Orford. Montana plays a 5 string banjo,
acoustic guitar and he says, “I’ll sing
favorite songs for the guys, including
tunes by Willie Nelson, Hank Williams,
Johnny Cash, the Kingston Trio and
some bluegrass and blues to boot.”

A big Thank You to all of you who
came out Saturday morning and helped
with the Highway 101 Clean up &
Beautification! There were a little over
twenty volunteers mowing, weed
eating, weeding in the sidewalk cracks,
grass blowing and painting curbs. It was
a fantastic start. More paint is needed to
finish the yellow curbs and thank you
to True Value for the paint and other
donations. A big thank you to those who
sacrificed your personal equipment to
spruce up main street and other arteries
throughout our community. We are
planning on finishing up on the 26th
to have our community ready for the
summer season. For the second year so
many of you have shown community
pride and how coming together brings
such a worthwhile positive outcome.

Sheriff Department News

On June 8, 2010, Curry County Sheriff’s
Parole and Probation arrested Gary
Caughey for violations of his release
from Prison. Caughey was transported
to the Curry County Jail and the Oregon
Parole Board was contacted.
With these violations the Sheriff has
asked the Parole Board to deem Caughey
a Predatory Sex Offender so that law
enforcement has greater authority to
release information for public safety.
The Sheriff has also asked the Parole
Board to revoke Caughey’s Parole and
send him back to prison to finish the
remainder of his sentence.
These violations did not include any
harm to individuals in Curry County
and were violations discovered by
investigative work conducted by Parole
and Probation Deputy Kris Bishop.
While a few of these violations were
discovered while Caughey was living in
Curry County, the Oregon Department
of Corrections has been notified that
Caughey had been deceitful to the prison
authorities and has acted in a manner
which may have violated Oregon State
Statute, while he was while incarcerated.
Due to Oregon State Statute and an
ongoing investigation we are unable to
release what these violations are in this
press release.
The Oregon State Parole Board and the
Oregon Department of Corrections are
assisting in this investigation. Curry
County Parole and Probation Deputies
Kris Bishop, and Dennis Shannon have
worked tirelessly with law enforcement
since Caughey moved to Curry County
and have spent a significant amount of
time supervising Caughey making sure
he obeyed his stipulated conditions of
release and when it was found he had
not he was immediately arrested.
On another note, Search and Rescue
members, from Curry County have
been asked to assist the search for the
7 year old Kyron Richard Horman who
went missing from Skyline Elementary
School in Portland after a science
fair on June 4. CORSAR members
from Southern Oregon are working in
conjunction with Multnomah county
helping relieve their Search and Rescue
members who have been searching for
the past seven days.

Parker will focus her talk on her latest
mystery, Leaden Skies, the third
installment in her “Silver Rush” series
of historical mysteries.
Leaden Skies, a finalist for the Colorado
book award, involves Ulysses S. Grant’s
interest in a boomtown silver mine, and

greed and murder in the Old West.”
The preceding installment, Iron Ties,
sees a small town erupt into violence
as resistance to the new railroad line
ignites controversy.
With degrees in Physics and English
Literature, Parker is a science writer by
day, authoring pieces on solar energy
technology, chilled beam systems
and human capital strategies. In the
evenings, however, she imagines and
pens tales about the old West. Parker’s
grandfather was a “gandy dancer”
on the Colorado railroads and her
Leadville, Colorado ancestors were part
of the silver rush in the 1880’s, which
has helped instill in Parker a desire for
authenticity and realism in her stories.
Before signing copies of her books,
Parker will discuss how she researches
the old west, and she’ll relay stories
about historic small towns, and other
archives of the western frontier. The
event is co-sponsored by Gold Beach
Books and the Ashland Mystery group.

Main Street Revitalization Report
Letter to the Editor,
The Studleys, a Branding Axe, and
the rest of the story…A Branding Axe
of the Studley brand, hand made by a
blacksmith in the thirties was found
under my house on Port Orford Loop
Road that the Studley family had built
in 1939. I put out a call a couple of
weeks ago to see if anyone knew how
to reach the Studleys and thanks to
Dolores Mayea; Jerry Studley was
contacted, and last Friday morning he
called me and the Axe is on its way to
Washington State. Jerry tells me that he
is passing the Axe on to his eldest son
and the family is thrilled to have it as a
piece of their family history. Jerry told
me he used his father’s Branding Axe
when he was a young man. In return I
received a wealth of information on the
construction and trials and tribulations
of building construction in the thirties
and forties here in Port Orford. It’s an
amazing story. Thanks again Dolores for
your help.

Father Andrew Thomas, who, for two
years, has been the priest for the Catholic
parish that includes Bandon and Port
Orford, will be leaving this month for
a new assignment. He has been asked
by the archdiocese to become the
pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,
St. Mary’s in Albany, Oregon. He has
accomplished much in the past two
years and will be greatly missed by the
church community of St. John’s.
His last Sunday Mass will be on June
13th. There will be no regular Mass
Service held on Sunday, June 20th in
Port Orford. If you would like to attend
a Sunday Mass, Holy Trinity Catholic
Church, in Bandon, will have a mass
at 10:00am. The following Sunday,
the mass in Port Orford will resume
at the regular time of 8:30am. A new
pastor, Father Michael Patrick, has been
appointed and will be arriving soon.

your artwork, readings and/or musical

Timothy Maynard Sentenced
Timothy Maynard was sentenced in
Curry County Circuit Court on June
10 in the courtroom of Judge Jesse
Margolis, in a criminal case involving
several incidents at Pacific High School
last year on October 5-8.
Count #1 - Reckless Burning - 180
days, 3 years probation, and restitution
Count #2 - Aggravated Theft - 20 days,
2 years probation, and restitution Count
#3 - 2nd Degree Burglary - 10 days,
18 months probation Count # 4 - 2nd
Degree Burglary - 20 days, 2 years
probation Mandatory drug and alcohol
program, and rehab, AA, etc. Maynard
was originally charged with arson in the
first degree but the charge was reduced
to “reckless burning” by the jury.
The sentences are to run concurrently,
and penalty and fees are significant.
Restitution will be nearly $100,000, and
as soon as the probation periods end, it
will be turned over to the IRS.
If a portion of the sentence is suspended,
Maynard can move to treatment earlier.
The District Attorney’s office released
information that Maynard will not serve

more than six feet on the ground or 12
inches in the air. Bottle rockets, Roman
candles, and firecrackers are ILLEGAL
in Oregon.
All fireworks are prohibited on all
Oregon beaches, state parks and in
federal parks and forests.
Illegal fireworks can be expensive.
Under Oregon law, officials may seize
illegal fireworks fining offenders up to
$500 per violation including possession
of illegal fireworks and endangering life
and property. Offenders may also be
arrested. Any fireworks causing damage
or misuse of fireworks carries a liability
for the offender, who may be required to
pay for resulting fire or other damage.
Parents are liable for fireworks-caused
damage by their children. Costs may
include assessed fines as well as the cost
of suppressing fireworks-caused fires.
Country Swing
Master guitarist Rapp Brush will offer
a free concert at Gold Beach Books on
Saturday, June 19 at 7:00pm. Rapp’s
music is a blend of country, jazz and
blues, which he calls “country swing.”
Well known for his rapport with
audiences during performances, Rapp
is a veteran performer at “honky-tonk”
venues around the country since the
1960’s, which included opening act
appearances for country stars Farron
Young, Moe Brandy and Bobby Bare.
Rapp is an expert at most guitar makes
and styles; he will be playing his vintage
Gibson on Saturday, among other
instruments.
The bookstore is located at Pacific
Highway 101 and First Street in Gold
Beach. Seating is limited, so patrons are
advised to arrive early.
