Here at the Library, that means it’s time for summer reading. But I’m an adult, you may say. Well, summer reading isn’t just for kids and teens – we have a club for everyone. Studies have shown that one of the strongest predictors of school success is coming from a household of readers, so this is a great way to model behavior for the young people in your life. Plus, it’s just plain fun. This summer’s theme is exercise – exercising both your mind and body. With that in mind, I would like to share a few audiobooks you can enjoy during your next workout; they would also be great for a road trip. I like to download audiobooks to my phone from the Nassau Digital Doorway and listen to them during my commute. Some of the following titles are available on CD in the Library, while others can be downloaded from our website. Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow / 35.5 hours It may take you a while to get tickets to “Hamilton”. In the meantime, you can listen to the book that inspired the show. It’s all here, from Hamilton’s miserable childhood to his involvement in the founding of our country. If you want more, we also have Hamilton: The Revolution (also known as the Hamiltome), which is read by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Mariska Hargitay. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline / 15.5 hours The year is 2044, and the race is on to complete the ultimate scavenger hunt. The prize? The entire estate of James Halliday, the founder of a world-wide virtual reality platform, who was obsessed with the 1980s. If you love video games and John Hughes movies, this novel is for you. Plus, it’s read by actor / author Wil Wheaton, which is an extra treat. Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe (read by the author) / 9 hours Prepare to be surprised by the high quality of Lowe’s prose as you are equally entertained and touched by his stories of growing up in Ohio and Malibu, dealing with his parents’ divorce, and navigating Hollywood as a teenager. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll just say that many celebrities pop up in surprising ways. Wild by Cheryl Strayed / 13 hours I enjoyed this memoir so much during a long car trip that I restarted it when it ended. Reeling from her mother’s death and the breakup of her marriage, Cheryl Strayed decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. What she lacked in hiking experience was made up for in determination. I guarantee you will never think about your shoes the same way after you listen to this, and perhaps you will be inspired to find your own challenge. SUMMER READING IS FUN FOR ALL! CHILDREN'S DISPLAY CASES July Star Wars® by Tommy Van Bellinghen My Little Pony® by Rose Altschuler August Pokemon® Cards by Benjamin Kircher Shopkins® by Gabriela Lucas If your child has a special collection or display they would like to share, call or visit the Children’s Reference Desk. This is a great way to make your child feel special by allowing them to share with friends what makes them unique. Call today! 223-6228, ext. 12.
