Bali bombing pair
have coaching in
common
New Subiaco and East Perth colts coaches Steven
Armstrong and Clint Ernst have more in common
than sharing a home ground as former WAFL
players coaching in their first season.
Both men were in Bali in 2002 when the Sari
Club was torn apart, killing 202 people including
88 Australians. Armstrong was on his first end-ofseason trip with Melbourne Football Club.
They both suffered physical injuries that would
slowly heal and emotional injuries that will never
leave them.
When Australian Bravery Decorations were
awarded following the tragedy that rocked our
neighbours, Ernst was among 199 honoured for
showing great bravery or providing outstanding
service after the Bali terrorist attacks. He was
recognised for acts of bravery considered worthy of
recognition.
Ernst was less than 10m from the bomb when it
exploded.
“It is a coincidence where Steven and I have
ended up 10 years after being in Bali,” said Ernst
who has a 100 percent record, coaching his charges
to victory last weekend in their opening game over
2011 grand finalists Claremont.
“I knew Steven was there but I don’t think he
realises I was there too. I’ve met him a few times but
have never really brought it up.
// Adam
Pickering
“It shows you how small the world is and perhaps
incidents like that are why we get into coaching.
Life is short and through coaching you can have an
impact on people’s lives and hopefully help them
get the best out of themselves.”
Ernst, who played 15 games for East Perth from
2004-2005 was selected in the 2008 State Country
side.
The 29-year-old has four years’ experience
coaching East Perth development squads and was
a member of the league side’s match committee last
season before taking the coaching job this year from
former West Coast Eagle Michael Braun.
“This is a career for me,” he said about coaching.
“By building structures and showing you can
be organised at colts level you can certainly build a
career platform.
“But while I have career goals the boys I am
coaching have goals too. That may be starting with
playing 10 colts games and I want to help develop
a structure and culture at East Perth where as many
players as possible get drafted or go on to play 100
plus games for this club.
“I’ve got a real passion for developing young
players and I started coaching some of these
boys at Under 14 and Under 15 level and it’s really
rewarding watching them come further through the
system.” Armstrong has been in the football system,
including at the highest level, for a long time.
After making his WAFL debut in 2000 at the age
of 16, he went on to play for Melbourne and West
Coast, claiming the ultimate prize when he collected
his premiership medallion as part of the Eagles 2006
winning grand final side.
As a member of one of the most recognisable
football families in WA, the grandson of Ken and
son of Garry is forging his own coaching career after
ending his 93-game career with Perth at the end of
2011.
He knows the pressures and expectations of
young men in the football system. He was an AFL/
AIS Academy member in 2001 and was joint winner
of the Larke Medal as the fairest and best player at
the Under 18s national championships.
As for starting new chapters in their lives as
recently retired players-turned-coaches, Armstrong
and Ernst are not alone.
Four-time WAFL premiership player Caine Hayes
is coaching the Subiaco reserves, former Subiaco
and East Fremantle player Clinton Rudd is in charge
of the East Perth reserves, former Carlton and East
Perth player Adam Pickering is coaching the East
Perth reserves and the new Swan Districts reserves
coach is former West Perth player Geoff Valentine.
Not to mention two men who are leading the
charge at the highest State level, Marc Webb and
Paul Hasleby who are guiding league teams
Claremont and South Fremantle in their first
major coaching roles.
Hayes, now 32, made his WAFL debut
in 2000. He played 42 games with East
Perth from 2000-2003 then 79 with Subiaco
between 2004 and 2009. He played in a
premiership with the Royals in 2001 and won
another three with the Lions in 2004, 2006
and 2008. He played three State games and
won the Simpson Medal as WA’s best in the
2006 State clash.
Rudd played 19 games for Subiaco
between 2001 and2003 then another eight
games for East Fremantle in 2008. The
29-year-old more recently played football in
the Goldfields and worked as an assistant to
last year’s Royals reserves coach David Hynes.
Thirty-year-old Pickering moved to
Western Australia after playing seven games
with Carlton ahead of his 111-game career
with the Royals between 2004 and 2010.
// Caine Hayes with his 2004 premiership teammates and coach Peter German
Now aged 40, Valentine played 37 games
for West Perth from 1994-1996. Swans had a
bye in Round 1 but in Round 2 he ironically
coached the Black Ducks to a 74-point win
over the Falcons.

During 1991 Malaxos played his 150th game with Claremont. In
1992, he transferred to East Fremantle. He won three club fairest and
best awards with the Sharks and played in premiership sides in 1992
and 1994.
“Ken Judge had a big influence on my career because he was the
person who was instrumental in getting me to East Fremantle,” Malaxos
said.
“I look back and am grateful for his support and I think he has
influenced the way I coach the club.”
In 1999, Malaxos was appointed as coach of the Sydney Swans
reserves team and in 2004 became an assistant coach at Fremantle.
Now in his second season as Sharks senior coach, Malaxos’ team
play its first game of the season this weekend after having byes in the
first two rounds.
“This is our first home game in seven-and-a-half months,” Malaxos
said.
“We haven’t played at home since August last year and we’re really
ready to go.
“We had as good a pre-season as we could have hoped for and now
the real stuff begins.”

THE lines may be a little blurred but Steve Malaxos looks at his
induction in the Top 25 Players Over the Past 25 Years as a reward for
his achievements in the last third of his career.
While his career between Claremont, Hawthorn, West Coast and
East Fremantle overlap in areas, it was his stand out career in his time
with the Sharks that convinced the selection panel that he was one of
the best WAFL players between 1987 and 2011.
The current East Fremantle coach, Malaxos and Darrell Panizza were
the only two inductees into the Top 25 who are also members of the WA
Football Hall of Fame.
“I was chuffed with my selection in the Top 25 and it sort of further
established in my mind how much I played and achieved in that period
of my career,” Malaxos said.
“While personally the selection was fantastic, I thought it was even
better for guys who had played some magnificent football in the WAFL
in that time but perhaps didn’t get a chance to play at a higher level or
have their careers recognised in another way.
“The Top 25 initiative is also great for the current day players
because they know that if they continue to play well in the WAFL they
are being watched.”
Malaxos won the 1984 Sandover Medal playing for Claremont and
was recruited by Hawthorn the next year. He played nine games with
the Hawks but soon returned to Perth where he was the inaugural
fairest and best player for WA’s first AFL club, West Coast.
In 1990, Malaxos played in the club’s historic drawn qualifying final
against Collingwood and the replay a week later. But despite being
captain he was dropped for the remaining finals and replaced as
captain by John Worsfold. Although he was on the club’s list again in
1991 he didn’t play another game.

Collectables
Entertainment
11
an
by Sean Cow
During 2012, the Football Budget
will again feature a section on WAFL
memorabilia and invites you to write or
email if you want more information about
the football collectables you have tucked
away at home.
Whether you are interested in WAFL, SANFL,
VFL or AFL collectables, you will almost
always find that trading cards are among the
most popular items.
And, like the other competitions, the WAFL
has issued or approved its fair share of cards
over the years.
Some of the rarest of those cards have
featured in this column and it’s not often that
someone comes up with cards that I’ve never
seen.
But one collector, who wanted to remain
anonymous, recently showed me his collection
of 1969 Sun Valley/Twisties WAFL cards.
The small-ish cards were issued inside
packets of Twisties and Sun Valley crisps and,
though I had seen photographs of them
before, they are so rare that I had never seen a
full set in-person.
And the fact that I hadn’t seen them in over
20 years of collecting should give you some
idea how much these little beauties are worth.
A collectables shop in Melbourne recently
tried to put a price tag on them by asking
about $1200 for an uncut sheet of all eight
cards.
Keep in mind that an uncut sheet is rare in
itself and is in immaculate condition whereas
most of the cards, including those owned
by the anonymous collector, turned yellow
thanks to the oil on the food.
But, even still, the cards would have to
fetch something like $100 each, more for
those the Vics would love like Denis Marshall,
Graham Farmer and Hassa Mann and less for
some of the others. As always, it’s a difficult
market to judge, especially when there are
no known past sale prices to use as a gauge.
And any folds or other damage always brings
down the price.
Featuring caricatures of eight players (one
from each of the traditional WAFL clubs), they
were designed by artist John Rogers and were
issued in parallel with VFL cards for Victorian
consumers. Along with Marshall, Farmer and
Mann, there were cards for Haydn Bunton Jr,
Derek Chadwick, Eric Sarich, Billy Walker and
Mal Atwell.
I’d love to hear from anyone else who has
any of these.
If you have a query regarding WAFL
memorabilia, send photographs and/or
details to Sean at [email protected] or
Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA, 6843.
He can be contacted on 0412 760 004.
Coasters
While the next type of item isn’t, strictly
speaking, a card, collectors usually treat it in
the same way.
Last year, I wrote in this column about
two sets of coasters – one featuring East
Fremantle players from 1979 and the other
featuring South Fremantle players from
1980. The coasters were produced by club
sponsors Melville Motors and Backshall Ford,
respectively.
At the time, they were thought to be
two of just three sets of coasters issued in
WA (along with East Fremantle’s 1987 set).
Over summer, however, I discovered just one
coaster produced by Youngs Holden for Swan
Districts. This coaster depicted WAFL stalwart
Gerard Neesham, most likely in 1980 or 1981 –
before he tried his luck at the Sydney Swans in
1982.
Membership badges
And, lastly for this week, John, of Melville, is
wondering whether anyone can help him
to find some Perth membership badges,
especially from the late 1950s and 1960s.
If you can help John or any of the other
collectors who have appeared in this column
over the past year, please get in touch. There
are plenty of WAFL diehards out there looking
for Budgets, cards, badges, Registers, flags,
posters, yearbooks and various other items
related to the WAFL and its member clubs.
A DANGEROUS
METHOD
(Paramount/
Transmission)
Has
anyone
ever seen any more
of these and does
anyone know how
many were issued in
the set or what year they were printed?
Given that collectors snap up the East
Fremantle and South Fremantle coasters,
these could be a real winner.
SALMON FISHING
IN THE YEMEN
(Roadshow Films)
A romantic, contemporary fable, Salmon
Fishing In The Yemen is the tale of
government employee Dr Alfred, or Fred,
Jones (Ewan McGregor), a rather introverted
scientist at the Department of Fisheries and
Agriculture.
Trudging along in his day job, with his
marriage stagnating, his world is thrown
into turmoil when he’s drawn into a scheme
hatched by a fly fishing‐obsessed Yemeni
Sheikh (Amr Waked) who dreams of achieving
the seemingly impossible — introducing
salmon to the wadis of the Yemen.
When the British government gets wind
of the Sheikh’s plan, the Prime Minister’s
fearsome spokesperson, Patricia Maxwell
(Kristin Scott Thomas), seizes on the idea — it’s
a good news story that will deflect attention
away from the government’s latest blunder.
She appoints Fred to oversee the project,
which pleases him not at all. For a logical,
rather stuffy scientist like Fred, the idea of
introducing salmon to the Yemen is one step
short of madness.
Fred, however, is won over by the
charismatic Sheikh and his mystical worldview,
while he also begins to fall for the Sheikh’s
representative, Harriet Chetwode‐Talbot (Emily
Blunt), a gentle and engaging English beauty
who joins on him his journey into the Yemen.
When Fred is drawn into helping Harriet
try and fix the troubles in her life, he learns
to cast off his deep‐set cynicism. Fred then
rises to the Sheikh’s eccentric challenge, and
embarks upon a journey of self‐discovery and
lateblooming love.
Opens in cinemas on April 5.
Opening on March 29, A Dangerous
Method stars Michael Fassbender,
Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen,
Vincent Cassel and Sarah Gadon.
Seduced by the challenge of an
impossible case, the driven Dr Carl Jung
(Fassbender) takes the unbalanced yet
beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Knightley) as
his patient in A Dangerous Method. Jung’s
weapon is the method of his master, the
renowned Sigmund Freud (Mortensen).
Both men fall under Sabina’s spell.

South Fremantle v Subiaco
Fremantle Oval
Both of these teams were predicted
to drop out of contention this
season but their opening round
games have shown they are still
hungry competitors.
The Lions had just about
everything go right for them last
week, including an eight-goal
haul from Des Headland to put
together the perfect game against
Peel. Subiaco won’t find it as easy
to score against South Fremantle
however, the Bulldogs boasting an
impressive back line.
South Fremantle put together
an incredible game, coming
back from 50 points down at
the final change to hand Perth
a heartbreaking loss. While
they were at times thoroughly
outplayed by the Demons the
Bulldogs were able to hold strong
and use their experience in
high pressure situations to pick
themselves back up.
Paul Mugambwa, who kicked
the goal to put the Bulldogs
ahead in the final quarter, set up
many scoring opportunities and
with his pace, ground vision and
unpredictability he could again
play a key role in South Fremantle’s
game plan.
The Lions have experienced
game winners of their own, with
Headland, Kane Bloxsidge, Conor
Davidson and Reece Blechynden
proving game breakers over the
last two games.
Blake Broadhurst will be under
consideration for his first
league game after kicking
two goals for Subiaco’s
reserves last week.
Overall record: South
Fremantle won 178, Subiaco
won 144, Drawn 3
East Perth v West Perth
Medibank Stadium
Winless in the first two weeks,
West Perth will want to avoid
getting into an early season slide
when it faces East Perth fresh
off a close loss to the defending
premiers.
East Perth’s midfield pushed
the Tigers for four quarters but
was unable to sustain the final
quarter comeback.
West Perth dropped a game
at home that most expected
it to win, allowing the Swans
forwards 32 scoring shots on
the back of smooth run through
the middle. The Falcons cannot
afford to give East Perth the
same opportunities, with Craig
Wulff, Josh Smith and Freddie
Clutterbuck among a key
contingent that are capable
of playing a relentless style up
forward.
Mark Hutchings put in a lot
of work for his 29 possessions
though the Falcons kept
themselves in the game largely
on the back of their defensive
play, led by a strong Dan Hunt
performance.
Unless the Falcons step
up with one of their rare high
scoring outputs it will be a case of
good attack versus good defence
to get the game over the line.
West Perth’s Jordan Jones is
set to play his 50th WAFL game
this week.
Overall record: East Perth won
162, West Perth won 156, Drawn 5
// Paul Bevan
Perth v Peel Thunder
Brownes Stadium
Perth and Peel are looking to
move on from promising but
disappointing losses that could
have easily been wins.
Both are tipped to make
significant improvements on
last season but with similar style
and flaws will need to make
adjustments to get on the board
this year.
After putting together another
solid first three quarters Perth
lost sight of its game plan in
the final term, allowing South
Fremantle to complete a stunning
58-point turnaround. The Demons
continually looked for Leon Davis
up forward, and while he made
his mark in the second and third
quarters he was quelled when the
game was on the line.
The Demons will need an
uplifted four quarters from him and
their other forward targets especially
against a Peel side that leaves holes
in its defence allowing strong
individual performances through.
The Thunder at their best play a
very attacking game, with a high
score usually leading to a win,
though they are prone to careless
turnovers as a result of messy ballhandling. Perth last week played a
very similar game, controlling the
ball well in the second and third
terms with easy turnovers in the
first and fourth.
The result of this week could hinge
purely on who takes care of the ball
the best, with both sides capable
of making an impact on the
scoreboard without a significant
defensive presence. Both Peel and
Perth had two players score four
goals last week (Ryan Herring and
debutant Edward Dann for the
Thunder, and Matt Moody and Paul
Bevan for the Demons) and will
need that scoring to apply pressure
to both teams’ unstable defences.
Ash Thornton is set to play his 50th
game for the Thunder.
Overall record: Perth won 23, Peel
won 15

Round 2
Saturday, March 24
Claremont v East Perth
East Fremantle v Claremont
East Fremantle Oval
East Fremantle plays its first game
of the season against a Claremont
side that has had to fight its way
to both wins this year.
The Tigers have been
challenged but have shown
premiership poise in the fourth
quarter.
Claremont was once again
tested by an underdog opponent,
withstanding three East Perth
onslaughts before regaining
composure and putting the
game out of reach.
Ian
Richardson
played
further up the ground bringing
in 25 disposal and four goals,
and provides a potent element
to an attack that includes Paul
Medhurst and Chad Jones.
The trio combined for 11
goals, while Sandover medallist
Luke Blackwell picked up 33
disposals and will once again be
a focal point driving Claremont’s
attack.
Like other teams the Sharks
have recruited tall, allowing the
influential Brock O’Brien and
Richard Hadley to move further
up the ground.
Claremont has held its
opponents to under 100 points
both times this season. How the
Tigers handle the pair of Hadley
and O’Brien will be a key factor
in limiting East Fremantle’s
capabilities. The Tigers will also
have to contend with the Rory
O’Brien and Mark McGough led
midfield that caused problems
for them last season, handing the
eventual premiers a thrashing
last time they met.
Overall record: East Fremantle
won 152, Claremont won 110,

Happy Fundraising!
Movie Masters are the proud major sponsor
of the Little League matches at half time of
WAFL League games. The Movie Masters WAFL
Little League had a very successful season in
2011, and know that 2012 will be even better.
Western Australia’s State 18s Women’s team
has been training since early February as it
gears up for the National Championships in
Adelaide in May.
A squad of 23 has been chosen with
a total team of 27 to be selected for the
Championships.
The squad is a true representation of WA,
with girls included from all over the State,
some from as far away as the Pilbara, Albany
and the South West.
Head coach Michelle Harris has led the
way, showing dedication with her massive
commitment travelling to and from Bunbury
twice a week to coach the girls.
So far the team has received specialist
coaching sessions from WA Talent Academy
coach Rob Wiley, West Coast star Nic Naitanui,
South Fremantle’s Paul Mugambwa and
tackling and physical presence training
sessions from Dr Les Fabre.
All of this, combined with fun beach
training and fitness sessions, have resulted
in terrific team bonding. Many of the girls are
multi-talented and participate in a variety of
sports at a very high level. For most of the girls
though AFL is their first love.
One of the squad members, Synarah
Murphy, is also a talented role model off the
football field after being named the youngest
Miss Pilbara in 2010.
As part of her role, Synarah travelled
around the Pilbara promoting a positive role
model for all indigenous girls, something
she hopes to continue in the future. She is
currently doing an Orientation Course at UWA
and hopes to complete a Bachelor of Science
degree in the future. // Synarah Murphy
// 2011 Movie Masters Shield winners Swanbourne JFC representing Claremont.
Synarah said the main focus for Team WA
this year was to knock the Victorians off their
winning pedestal.
“Along with having great fun on the footy
field,” she said.
Synarah has worked hard over the last few
months to improve all of her football skills.
Beauty, brains and skills – what an awesome
combination!

AFL
Umpires rewarded for pre-season commitment
Field umpire Travis Norton, boundary
umpire Justin Morgan and goal umpire
Luke Edwards were all recognised for their
outstanding pre-seasons at the WAFL
Umpiring season launch.
The trio were each named their discipline’s
best performer of the summer and received
medals named after some of umpiring’s
former greats.
Norton won the Ross Capes Medal after
a stunning pre-season which came after a
disappointing 2011.
He umpired just one league game last year
after making a key mistake, but set himself to
overcome the obstacles in front of him and
make a statement.
He dominated most of his colleagues in
training to set himself up for a big year and
was rewarded with his return to league footy
in Round 1.
AFL Round 1, Western Bulldogs V West Coast

Morgan’s pre-season was his first in Perth.
He moved to WA from Queensland last year,
having umpired league footy in the northern
state.
Morgan quickly established himself and
made his WAFL debut late in the season.
But his efforts throughout the summer
ensured he was quickly rated as one of the
best boundary umpires on the list and he was
also rewarded with the Ron Hall Medal and a
game in Round 1 to get the new season off to
a great start.
Edwards’ 2011 season was the sort of thing
dreams are made of. He’d only umpired six
games at the start of the year but finished the
season with the league grand final.
Tall and strong, Edwards looks more like a
ruckman than a goal umpire and he is ideally
positioned for a fantastic career.
Edwards won the Merv Rose Medal.
The Capes, Hall and Rose Medals are
named after umpires who were selected in the
WANFLUA Team of the Half Century.
Tall and strong, Edwards
looks more like a ruckman
than a goal umpire and he
is ideally positioned for a
fantastic career.

the best goal umpire in the WAFL pre-season.

Six mates, 1,000km for men’s health
Amateurs launch season
THE second Mates 500 Relay set off from
Manjimup recently to raise awareness of
regional men’s health.
In 2011 six mates from Manjimup set off
on a 500km relay to raise money for Regional
Men’s Health Initiative and Prostate Cancer
Foundation of Australia, this year they trekked
an another 500km for the cause.
Tim Lyster, Heath East, Anthony
Stubberfield, Mat Johnston, Wayne Barnden
and Paul Omodei, who are all actively
involved in the Lower South West Football
League, initially planned the event as a one
off leadership challenge to inspire the best
players from the LSWFL to make themselves
available for the Landmark Country Football
Championships team.
The inspiration to turn the run into an
inaugural event came from the group’s desire
THE WA Amateur Football League officially launched its season on
Wednesday night as attention turns to the first round of matches on
April 14.
Held at the Subiaco Football Club at Medibank Stadium, the launch
was attended by representatives from each WAAFL club as well as
special guests including WA Football Commission Director of Football
Competitions Grant Dorrington and Community Football Advisory
Committee Chairman Brian Sierakowski.
Guest speaker for the night was West Coast Eagles Schools and
Community Program Co-ordinator Kim Hannah.
The night officially welcomes clubs to the 2012 WA Amateur
Football League season before the first round of fixtures for all grades
kicks off on April 14.
The 2012 fixtures were released by the WAAFL in the week leading
up to the launch, with round one highlighted by a C1 grand final
rematch between Kelmscott and Scarborough – this time in B Grade.
The two teams played four times in 2011 with Scarborough winning
the Round 7 and 16 encounters by nine and 11 points respectively,
while Kelmscott were shock 18-point winners in the second semi-final,
earning their place in the grand final. It was minor premier Scarborough
who proved too good in the grand final however, running out 43-point
winners.
Newly promoted A Grade teams Hamersley Carine and Swan
Athletic will face Trinity Aquinas and North Fremantle respectively in
Round 1, while Wesley Curtin and Fremantle CBC face Kalamunda and
West Coast Cowan in B Grade after finishing bottom two in the 2011 A
Grade competition.
Last season’s C2 premiers Coolbinia West Perth have the tough first
up task of taking on Melville in their C1 debut.
Melville dropped to C1 after a disappointing year in B Grade in 2011
and will be eager to start the season strongly in their opening match
against the newly-promoted Coolbinia.
Round 1 will also feature the debut of two new WAAFL teams – the
Cobras Football Club and the Osborne Park Amateur Football Club.
Both the Cobras and Osborne Park join the WAAFL from the
Mercantile Football Association and will both play their inaugural year
in C4.
to help further promote the importance of
health and wellbeing to men in regional areas
after raising over $58,000 in 2011.
“The committee and runners are excited
with the opportunity to extend the awareness
of men’s health issues into rural areas outside
the area they live in,” “Mates 500 Relay”
chairman Paul Omodei said ahead of the
adventure.
The Mates 500 team, consisting of farmers,
tradies and professionals, jogged out of
Nannup at 5am on March 10 and run an
average of 28 kilometres each daily until they
crossed the finish line in their hometown at
6pm on March 16.
Michelle Lyster diarised the final day of
the Relay. “Anyone who knows Heath East, will
have witnessed many times the great resolve
shown this morning when he was out on the

road two hours prior to the other runners
walking 12kms to give his Mates a head start
for Day 6,” she wrote.
“Accompanied by his wife, one car with
two support crew (and many hungry sheep
looking for an easy feed) they walked in
darkness until the rest of the crew caught up.
“With a good head start the mates hit
Darkin at 9.30am with the next turn for
Moodiarrup. Battling some undulating terrain
and a stiff head wind the enormity of the week
tolled as the pace slightly decreased. With the
arrival of Cameron Knapton and Dean Kemp,
the mates rallied and descended the main
street of Kojonup at 5.10pm, bringing Day 6 to
an end.
“Fatigued and blistered, spirits were high
as we were homeward bound! A special
mention to Brendan Earl who joined the
mates as a support runner and covered 50km.
And as always the logistical legend, Mr Nigel
Reeve on his deadly treadly.”
