Thank you for purchasing the Canon Colour Laser Copier (CLC) 1100. Please read this manual
thoroughly before operating the machine in order to familiarise yourself with its capabilities, and
to make the most of its many functions. After reading this manual, store it in a safe place for
future reference.

Preventing Counterfeit Documents
This machine includes a function for preventing counterfeit documents; if copying documents
that resemble paper money closely, you may be unable to get an appropriate image.
Laser Safety
This Printer is certified as a Class 1 laser product under EN60825-1: 1994. This means that the
printer does not produce hazardous laser radiation.
Since radiation emitted inside the printer is completely confined within protective housings and
external covers, the laser beam cannot escape from the machine during any phase of user
operation.

Additional Information
When servicing or adjusting the optical system of the printer, be careful not to place
screwdrivers or other shiny objects in the path of the laser beam. Also, accessories such as
watches and rings should be removed before working on the printer. The reflected beam, though
invisible, can permanently damage your eyes.
Since the beam is invisible, the following labels are attached to the inside of covers where there
is danger of exposure to laser radiation:

Important Safety Instructions
Installation
WARNING
• Do not install the machine near alcohol, paint thinner or other flammable substances. If
flammable substances come into contact with electrical parts inside the machine, it may
result in a fire or electrical shock.
• Do not place the following items on the machine. If these items come into contact with a
high-voltage area inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock.
If these items are dropped or spilled inside the machine, immediately turn OFF the power
switch, and unplug the power plug from the outlet. Then, contact your service
representative.
- Necklaces and other metal objects
- Cups, vases, flowerpots and other containers filled with water or liquids
CAUTION
• Do not install the machine in unstable locations such as on unsteady platforms or on
inclined floors, or in locations subject to excessive vibrations, as this may cause the
machine to fall or tip over, resulting in personal injury.
• Never block the ventilation slots and louvers on the machine. These openings are
provided for proper ventilation of working parts inside the machine. Blocking these
openings can cause the machine to overheat. Also never place the machine on a soft
surface such as a sofa or rug.
• Do not install the machine in the following locations;
- A damp or dusty location.
- A location near water faucets and water.
- A location exposed to direct sunlight.
- A location subject to high temperatures.
- A location near open flames.

• Do not remove the machine’s fixing stoppers after the machine has been installed, as
this may cause the machine to fall or tip over, resulting in personal injury.
Power Supply
WARNING
• Do not damage or modify the power cord. Also, do not place heavy objects on the power
cord, or pull on or excessively bend it, as this could cause electrical damage and result
in a fire or electrical shock.
• Keep the power cord away from a heat source; failure to do this may cause the cord
coating to melt, resulting in a fire or electrical shock.
• Do not insert or unplug the power plug with wet hands, as this may result in electrical
shock.
• Do not plug the machine into a multi-plug power strip, as this may cause a fire or
electrical shock.
• Do not bundle up or tie the power cord in a knot, as this may result in a fire or electrical
shock.
• Insert the power cord completely into the outlet, as failure to do so may result in a fire or
electrical shock.
• As a general rule, do not use extension cords. Using an extension cord may result in a
fire or electrical shock. If an extension cord must be used, however, use one rated for
voltages of AC 230 V and over, untie the cord binding and insert the power plug
completely into the extension cord outlet to ensure a firm connection between the power
and extension cords.
CAUTION
• Do not use power supplies with voltages other than those specified, as this may result in
a fire or electrical shock.
• Always grasp the plug when unplugging the power plug. Pulling on the power cord may
expose or snap the core wire, or otherwise damage the power cord. If the cord is
damaged, this could cause current to leak, resulting in a fire or electrical shock.
• Leave sufficient space around the power plug so that it can be unplugged easily. If
objects are placed around the power plug, you will be unable to unplug it in an
emergency.

Handling
WARNING
• Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the machine. There are high-temperature and
high-voltage components inside the machine which may result in a fire or electrical
shock.
• If the machine makes strange noises, or gives off smoke, heat or strange smells,
immediately turn OFF the power switch, and unplug the power plug from the outlet.
Then, contact your service representative. Continued use of the machine in this
condition may result in a fire or electrical shock.
• Do not use highly flammable sprays near the machine. If gas from these sprays comes
into contact with the electrical components inside the machine, it may result in a fire or
electrical shock.
• To avoid damage to the power cord and creating a fire hazard, always turn the power
switch to OFF, and unplug the interface cable when moving the machine. Otherwise,
power cord or interface cable may be damaged, resulting in fire or electrical shock.
• Do not drop paper clips, staples or other metal objects inside the machine. Also, do not
spill water, liquids or flammable substances (alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, etc.) inside
the machine. If these items come into contact with a high-voltage area inside the
machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock. If these items are dropped or spilled
inside the machine, immediately turn OFF the power switch and unplug the power plug
from the outlet. Then, contact your service representative.
CAUTION
• Do not place heavy objects on the machine, as they may tip over or fall resulting in
personal injury.
• Close the feeder, platen glass cover and editor gently to avoid catching your hand, as
this may result in personal injury.
• Do not press down hard on the feeder when using the platen glass to make copies of
thick books, etc. Failure to do so may damage the platen glass and result in personal
injury.

• Do not touch the moving sort bins while the machine is copying, as this may result in
personal injury.
• Turn OFF the power switch for safety when the machine will not be used for a long time
such as overnight. Also, turn OFF the power switch and unplug the power plug for safety
when the machine will not be used for an extended period, such as during consecutive
holidays.
• Do not place your hand in the part of the bins where stapling is performed when a stapler
sorter is attached, as this may result in personal injury.
• Laser beam can be harmful to human bodies. Since radiation emitted inside the product
is completely confined within protective housings and external covers, the laser beam
cannot escape from the machine during any phase of user operation. Read the following
remarks and following instructions for safety.
• Never open covers other than those instructed in this manual.

• Do not remove the caution label attached to the cover of the laser scanner unit.
• If the laser beam escapes from the machine, exposure may cause serious damage to
your eyes.

Maintenance and Inspections
WARNING
• When cleaning the machine, first turn OFF the power switch, then unplug the power
plug. Failure to observe these steps may result in a fire or electrical shock.
• Unplug the power plug from the outlet regularly, and clean the area around the base of
the plug’s metal pins and the power outlet with a dry cloth to ensure all dust and grime is
removed.
If the machine is plugged in for a long time in a damp, dusty, or smoky location, dust can
build up around the plug and become damp.
This may cause a short circuit and result in a fire.
• Clean the machine using a firmly wrung cloth dampened with a mild detergent mixed
with water. Do not use alcohol, benzene, paint thinner or other flammable substances. If
flammable substances come into contact with a high-voltage area inside the machine, it
may result in a fire or electrical shock.
• There are some areas inside the machine which are subject to high voltages. When
removing jammed paper or when inspecting the inside of the machine, do not allow
necklaces, bracelets or other metal objects to touch the inside of the machine, as this
may result in burns or electrical shock.
• Do not burn used toner bottles or fixing oil bottles. The toner or oil will ignite and may
cause burns or fire.

CAUTION
• The fixing unit and its surroundings inside the machine may become hot during use.
When removing jammed paper or when inspecting the inside of the machine, do not
touch the fixing unit and its surroundings, as this may result in burns or electrical shock.
• When removing jammed paper or supplying the toner, take care not to allow the toner to
come into contact with your hands or clothing, as this will dirty your hands or clothing. If
they become dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing them with warm
water will fix the toner and make it impossible to remove the toner stains.

• When removing paper which has become jammed inside the machine, remove the
jammed paper gently to prevent the toner on the paper from scattering and getting into
your eyes or mouth. If toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wash them immediately with
cold water and consult a physician.
• When loading paper or removing jammed originals or paper, take care not to cut your
hands on the edges of the original or paper.
• When removing a toner bottle from the toner supply port, remove the toner bottle
carefully to prevent the toner from scattering and getting in your eyes or mouth. If the
toner gets in your eyes or mouth, wash them immediately with cold water and consult a
physician.
Consumables
WARNING
• Do not burn used toner bottles or fixing oil bottles, as this may cause toner or oil
remaining inside the bottles to ignite, resulting in burns or a fire.
• Do not store toner bottles, fixing oil bottles, or copy paper in places exposed to open
flames, as this may cause the toner, oil, or paper to ignite, resulting in burns or a fire.
CAUTION
• Keep toner, fixing oil and other consumables out of the reach of small children. If these
items are ingested, consult a physician immediately.
Others
WARNING
• For cardiac pacemaker users:
This product generates a low level magnetic field. If you use a cardiac pacemaker and
feel abnormalities, please move away from the product and consult your doctor.

Avoid Installing the Copier in the Following Locations
■ Avoid locations subject to extremes of temperature and humidity, whether low or high.
For example, avoid installing the copier near water faucets, hot water heaters, humidifiers, air
conditioners, heaters or stoves.
■ Avoid installing the copier in a location subject to direct sunlight.
If this is unavoidable, use curtains to shade the copier.

■ Avoid poorly ventilated locations.
The copier generates ozone while it is in use. However, the amount generated is not enough
to affect the human body. Nevertheless, fumes may be an annoyance if you make a large
amount of copies or use the copier for an extended period of time in a poorly ventilated room.
It is recommended that you ventilate the room to make the working environment as
comfortable as possible.
Before You Start Using This Copier

■ Avoid locations where a considerable amount of dust accumulates.
■ Avoid locations where ammonia gas is emitted.
■ Avoid locations near volatile or flammable materials, such as alcohol or paint thinner.
■ Avoid locations that are subject to vibration.
For example, avoid installing the copier on unstable floors or stands.

■ Avoid exposing the copier to rapid changes in temperature.
If the room in which the copier is installed is cold but rapidly heated, water droplets
(condensation) may form inside the copier. This may result in a noticeable degradation in the
quality of the copied image, the inability to properly scan an original, or the copies having no
printed image at all.
Before You Start Using This Copier

■ Avoid installing the copier near computers or other precision electronic equipment.
Electrical interference and vibrations generated by the copier during a Copy job can adversely
affect the operation of such equipment.
■ Avoid installing the copier near televisions, radios, or similar electronic equipment.
The copier might interfere with sound and picture signal reception. Plug the copier into a
dedicated power outlet and maintain as much space as possible between the copier and
other electronic equipment.
■ About the copier’s fixing stoppers.
Do not remove the copier’s fixing stoppers after the copier has been installed.
If you put weight on the front of the copier when the drawers or units within the copier are
pulled out, the copier may fall forward. To prevent this from happening, make sure that the
copier’s fixing stoppers are in place.

■ Plug the copier into a 230 V AC outlet.
■ Do not plug other electrical equipment into the outlet to which the copier is connected.

■ Do not plug the copier into a multi-plug power strip. Doing so might cause a fire.
Before You Start Using This Copier
■ Make sure that the power supply for the copier is safe and has a steady voltage.
■ The power cord may become damaged if it is often stepped on or if heavy objects are
placed on it. Continued use of a damaged power cord can lead to an accident.

■ If you intend to move the copier, contact your service representative beforehand.

copier. If a foreign object comes into contact with electrical parts inside the copier, it
might cause a short circuit and result in a fire or an electrical shock.

power cord from the outlet, then call your service representative. Using the copier in
this state may cause a fire or an electric shock. Also, avoid placing objects around the

■ Do not turn the power switch off or open the front doors while the copier is in
operation. This might result in paper jams.
■ Do not use flammable sprays such as spray glue near the copier. There is a danger of
ignition.

Use the edit pen to designate areas and select
colours from the colour palette.
The Editor-F1 is hereinafter referred to as the
editor.
b RDF-E3 (Recirculating Document
Feeder)
Originals placed in the feeder are automatically
fed sheet by sheet onto the platen glass for
copying. It also automatically turns over the
originals when making copies of two-sided
originals.
The RDF-E3 is hereinafter referred to as the

Frequently Used Keys on the Touch Panel Display
The following keys on the touch panel display are used frequently.
Press to close the current setting screen, retaining the programmed settings
in the Additional Functions screen.
Press to cancel the function (mode) that is being set, or has already been
set, in screens other than the Additional Functions screen.
Press to confirm the current setting and proceed to the next step in the
procedure.
Press to go back to the previous step in the procedure, leaving the current
setting as it is.
Press to close the present screen.
Press to confirm the setting of a function (mode).
Press to clear numerical values entered when specifying certain functions.
The ‘ ’ mark on some keys indicates that pressing those keys will display
other settings screens.

When you press a key on the touch panel display, that key is highlighted and the corresponding
function (mode) is set. Although some keys are never highlighted, a key that is highlighted
indicates that the function (mode) it represents is specified or active. When you specify certain
functions (modes), the characters on some other keys may become difficult to see, that is, they
become greyed out.
Adjusting the Contrast of the Touch Panel Display
If the touch panel display is difficult to see, use the display contrast dial on the control panel to
adjust its brightness.

To enter values in inches for all functions that require numeric entry, set the Inch Entry setting to
“On” under Custom Settings of the Additional Functions screen. (See ‘Specifying Inch Entry’, on
p. 2-11.)
The following example (1_1/2") shows inch entry when specifying the Zoom Programme
function.

Auto Power-off Function
If no key is pressed for a certain period of time when the copier is in the Ready mode or the
Energy Saver mode, it will automatically turn off.
NOTE
• You can specify the Auto Power-off function’s timer settings from 1 to 4 hours. (See ‘Changing the
Auto Power-off Time’, on p. 2-35.)
Energy Saver Mode
When the copier is not being used for copying for an extended period of time, lowering the
temperature of the fixing unit can help economize on electricity. This is called the Energy Saver
mode. Press
(Energy Saver) to put the copier into the Energy Saver mode. Press
(Energy
Saver) again to wake it up for normal operation.
NOTE
• You can set the energy saving level to -10%, -25%, or -50%, or specify Return to Standard Mode.
(See ‘Changing Settings for the Energy Saver Mode’, on p. 2-10.)
Auto Drawer Switching Function
If the currently selected drawer or the paper deck (option) runs out of paper during a Copy job,
the copier automatically locates another paper feeding location loaded with the same size paper,
and begins feeding paper from that paper feeding location.
NOTE
• The Auto Drawer Switching function does not apply to the stack bypass and drawers that have been
designated as the feeding location for transparencies.
• You can set whether or not each of the drawers and the paper deck (option) is subject to Auto Drawer
Switching. The default setting is “On” for all paper feeding locations. (See ‘Setting a Drawer and the
Paper Deck for Auto Paper Selection/Auto Drawer Switching’, on p. 2-14.)

Auto Clear Function
If the copier is left untouched for approximately two minutes after a Copy job or a key input, all
specified settings are cleared and the standard copy settings are restored.

• You can set the Auto Clear Time from 1 to 9 minutes, in 1-minute increments. The default setting is 2
Paper Supply Indicator
The paper supply indicator shows the amount of paper remaining in the currently selected
drawer or paper deck (option).

Specifying Standard Keys
You can specify up to nine standard keys to display on the Basic Features screen for easy
access to frequently used functions. The functions that can be specified include Copy Ratio,
Sorter, Two-sided, and Original Type from the Basic Features screen, various setting keys from
the Special Features screen, mode memory keys, and Additional Functions’ Automatic
Gradation Adjustment and SWOP Emulation.
Assigning frequently used functions to these keys can greatly enhance the convenience of using
your copier.
NOTE
• No standard keys are specified by default.

The Basic Features Screen is the screen that is displayed after the power is turned on or after

function will be displayed as part of the Basic Features screen.

• By default, the Basic Features screen does not display any function’s settings screen.

Changing Settings for the Energy Saver Mode
Pressing
(Energy Saver) on the control panel puts the copier into the Energy Saver mode.
While in the Energy Saver mode, the temperature of the fixing unit is lowered, thus economizing
on electricity.
You can set the energy saving level to -10%, -25%, or -50%, or specify Return to Standard
Mode.

Setting a Drawer and the Paper Deck for Auto Paper
Selection/Auto Drawer Switching
You can set the drawers or the paper deck (option) to be used for Automatic Paper Selection and
Auto Drawer Switching.
NOTE
• Paper feeding locations set to “On” are used for the following functions.
- Auto Paper Selection (APS): This function automatically selects the paper (paper feeding location)
based on the original’s size and copy ratio settings.
- Auto Drawer Switching (ADS): If a drawer or the paper deck (option) runs out of paper during a Copy
job, the copier automatically selects another paper feeding location with the same paper size and
begins feeding paper from that paper feeding location.
• Turn Drawer Eligibility for APS/ADS off if the drawer or paper deck (option) holds paper of the same
size but of a different type and is meant for a different purpose.
• The default setting is “On” for all paper feeding locations.
• If “Off” is specified for all paper feeding locations, the Original Recognition function may not work.

(Change Colour Sheet)
The Change Colour Sheet function enables you to change the colour palette sheet settings of
the copier when the colour palette sheet of the editor (option) is changed. Colour registration for
the custom sheet is also performed through this function.
IMPORTANT
• Change Colour Sheet can be specified only if the editor (option) is attached.
• The colour palette sheets can be output only if the IP-ED board (option) is attached.

By creating a department ID and password for each department, you can set the copier such
that its functions can be used only after the correct password has been entered. This is called
Department ID Management. Department IDs and passwords for up to 100 departments can be
stored. This function enables you to tally the copy totals for each department.

If the copier is left untouched for a specified period of time after a Copy job or a key input, the
copier will automatically lower the temperature of the fixing unit and go into the Energy Saver
mode. This is called the Auto Energy Saver function.

Changing the Auto Power-off Time
If no key is pressed for a certain period of time when the copier is in the Ready mode or the
Energy Saver mode, it will automatically turn off. This is called the Auto Power-off function.
IMPORTANT
• When the copier’s power is turned off by the Auto Power-off function, scanned texture patterns and
scans of text originals made for copying using the Character Composition function are lost.
Such settings stored in mode memory or the memory of the Recall key are also lost.

If copies turn out to be lighter or darker than the originals despite being copied with the standard
or centre copy exposure value, you will have to recalibrate the copy exposure settings of the
copier.

This function enables you to recalibrate the copier when you notice irregularities in the colour of
the copy. The procedure involves making test prints and placing them on the platen glass for
scanning. The copier will then be automatically recalibrated.

• Make sure that you set the test print correctly. An improperly placed test print can cause the colour

The Text/Photo Priority function enables you to adjust the text and photo differentiation priority
level so that copies are reproduced at a higher quality. Give priority to Text when making copies
of originals with fine and faint characters. When making copies of originals with photos that you
prefer to reproduce clearly, set the Photo priority higher.
Cleaning the Feeder
You can clean the roller of the feeder (option) by repeatedly feeding blank paper through it.
IMPORTANT
• Feeder Cleaning is a function that can only be performed when the feeder (option) is attached.
NOTE
• It takes about 20 seconds to clean the feeder (option).

This section describes how to load paper into the drawers and the stack bypass.
Loading Paper into the Drawers
When the selected paper has run out, or the selected drawer runs out of paper during a Copy
job, a screen prompting you to load paper is displayed on the touch panel display.

Follow the procedure below to load paper into the drawers:
CAUTION
• When loading paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the paper.
IMPORTANT
• Load paper of the size indicated on the outside of the drawer that is empty.
• The drawers can only accommodate paper of 64 to 105 g/m2 in weight. Use the stack bypass to load
paper that is heavier.
• Do not load 305 x 457 mm or irregular-size paper into the drawers.
• The message also appears if the selected drawer is not fully inserted into the copier. Once you
properly insert the drawer, the message disappears.

To use a drawer with transparencies, you have to first designate that drawer as the feeding location
for transparencies. (See p. 2-16)
Refer to Chapter 2, ‘Useful Copy Functions’, in the Copying Guide for instructions on the correct way
to load transparencies into a drawer.
Refer to ‘Loading Paper into the Paper Deck’, on p. 5-29 for instructions on the correct way to load
paper into the paper deck (option).

factors such as dryness or humidity. To prevent such changes in the quality of paper, place the
transparent sheet that comes with the drawer onto the bottom of the drawer. Make sure to use the
correct-size sheet for the paper you are loading, and place the sheet such that the arrow on the sheet
is against the far-right corner of the drawer.
• Do not load the following types of paper into the drawer. Doing so may cause a paper jam.

Thin straw paper
Paper which has been copied onto (do not copy on the reverse side either)
Paper which has been output using a printer or a copier other than this copier (do not copy on the
reverse side either)
• Always use the stack bypass to feed paper when you copy onto the rear side of a sheet of paper that
already has something copied onto its front side (2nd side of 2-sided copy).
• Fan the stack of paper well before loading it.
• Do not place paper or any other items in the empty part of the drawer next to the paper stack. Doing
so may cause paper jams.
NOTE
• Each drawer holds about 550 sheets of paper (80 g/m2).

Gently push the drawer back into the copier until it clicks.
CAUTION
• Be careful not to catch your fingers between the drawer and the copier.
IMPORTANT
• You will not be able to make copies if you load paper beyond the loading limit or if the drawer is not
completely pushed into the copier. Always check that drawers are in place and if a drawer is
overloaded, decrease the amount of paper to the loading limit.

Adjusting a Drawer to Hold a Different Paper Size
If you want to load a new paper size into a drawer, follow the procedure described below to
adjust the drawer guides.
NOTE
• Drawer 2 can be adjusted to hold paper of A3, A4, and A4R sizes.
• Drawer 1 is not adjustable and cannot accommodate different paper sizes.

Press and then release the button of Drawer 2.
Gently press the button all the way to the back. If you do not press the button all the way, you may not
be able to pull the drawer out. In this case, push the drawer back in and press the button again.

Pull out Drawer 2 and remove all the loaded paper.
Squeeze the lever on the left guide as shown below. Without releasing the
lever, slide the left guide to align it with the mark for the desired paper size.

Squeeze the lever on the front guides as shown below. Without releasing the
lever, slide the front guides to align them with the mark for the desired paper
size.

IMPORTANT
• Not adjusting the guides correctly may cause paper jams, produce copies with dirt marks, or make
the inside of the copier dirty. To prevent these problems, check that the guides are adjusted correctly
for the paper size you are loading.

Change the drawer’s size plate to match the new paper size that you are
loading.
If you load paper horizontally, use a size plate that has an ‘R’ as a suffix (e.g., A4R).

Loading Paper in the Stack Bypass
If the stack bypass runs out of paper during a Copy job, a screen prompting you to load paper is
displayed on the touch panel display.
Follow the procedure below to load paper in the stack bypass:
CAUTION
• When loading paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the paper.
IMPORTANT
• Note the following points when using the stack bypass:
- Copy quantity: 1 to approximately 250 sheets (80 g/m2),
1 to approximately 100 sheets (transparencies)
- Paper size:
305 x 457 mm paper, A3, A4, A4R,
irregular size paper (182 x 182 mm to 305 x 457 mm)
- Paper weight: 64 to 209 g/m2
• Curl down paper before use. There are some types of paper that may meet the above specifications
but cannot feed through the stack bypass.
• Do not load paper of different sizes or types at the same time.
• Only use transparencies that are specifically recommended for use with this copier.
Other transparencies may damage the copier.
• Make sure to immediately remove transparencies or heavy paper that are output onto the output tray.
Failure to do so may result in paper jams.

• Refer to Chapter 2, ‘Useful Copy Functions’, in the Copying Guide for instructions on the correct way
to load transparencies in the stack bypass.

Make sure that the height of the paper stack does not exceed the limit mark.
Load the required number of sheets of paper in the stack bypass with the surface of the paper that was
facing upward when the package was opened face up. This is the surface that will be copied onto. Make
sure to align the paper with the slide guides and push the paper stack into the stack bypass as far as it
will go.

Adding Toner
When the toner has run out and copies can no longer be made, the message shown below
appears on the touch panel display. The message explains how to add toner.

• Do not throw toner bottles into open flames, as this may cause the toner to ignite and result in
burns or a fire.
• Do not store toner bottles in places exposed to open flames, as this may cause the toner to
ignite and result in burns or a fire.
CAUTION
• Keep toner out of the reach of small children. If toner is ingested, consult a physician
immediately.
• If toner gets onto your hands or clothes, wash it off immediately with cold water. Do not use
warm water as this may fix the toner permanently and you may not be able to remove it later.
IMPORTANT
• Copying cannot resume until the depleted toner is refilled. It is recommended that you prepare toner
before it runs out.
• Use only the toner recommended for use with this copier.
• Never add more than one toner bottle at one time.
• Add toner soon after the “Add xxx toner”. message is displayed.

• Press [Previous] or [Next] on the screen for instructions on the procedure to add toner.

• When adding toner, check that the colour of the toner bottle matches the colour of the toner supply
port. Mixing toner of different colours may adversely affect the copier or the quality of copies.

Shake the toner bottle as illustrated below.
With the opening of the toner bottle facing downward, drop the bottle about five times from a height of
approximately 3 cm onto a hard surface, such as a desk. Repeat the same procedure with the bottom
of the toner bottle facing downward.
Holding the toner bottle with both hands, slowly turn it upside down and then right-side up again at
least 20 times to shake the contents.

• When shaking the toner bottle, be careful not to pull the shutter out accidentally.

Line up the toner bottle opening with the toner supply port, then turn the
bottle in the direction of the arrow.

• The shape of the toner bottle opening and the toner supply port is different for each colour. If the
toner bottle does not seem to fit the port securely, check again to make sure that the toner bottle
colour and the colour indicated for the toner supply port match.

The shutter cannot be pulled out if the toner bottle is not correctly seated on the toner supply port.

Gently tap the bottom and sides of the toner bottle two or three times to
dislodge toner clinging onto the bottle.

• When tapping the toner bottle, do not tap it strongly. The toner supply port may break.

Push the shutter of the toner bottle back into place, then turn the toner
bottle in the direction of the arrow.

• Turn the toner bottle completely, until it stops.
10 Slowly and gently lift the toner bottle up and off the toner supply port.
WARNING
• Do not throw used toner bottles into open flames, as this may ignite the toner remaining
inside the bottle, and result in burns or a fire.
CAUTION
• When removing the used toner bottle from the toner supply port, be careful not to scatter the
toner and allow it to enter your eyes or mouth. If toner enters your eyes or mouth, wash them
immediately with cold water and consult a physician.

• Do not try to lift the toner bottle without first turning it in the direction as indicated by the arrow in
step 9. Doing so may damage the toner supply port.

11 Gently replace the cover of the toner supply port.

into the copier.
Make sure that the toner box makes a clicking sound when you push it into the copier, as this indicates
that it is correctly seated.

• Your service representative will dispose of the used toner bottle. Make sure that the shutter is
closed and store it in a location away from open flames.

When fixing oil runs out, the procedure for refilling fixing oil is displayed on the touch panel
display.

• Make sure that the room where the copier is located is well-ventilated before proceeding with
the oil refill procedure.

Remove the cap of the new fixing oil bottle and attach the nozzle.

• Make sure that the nozzle is firmly attached to the bottle.

Refill the oil tank with one bottle of fixing oil.

• Be careful not to spill the fixing oil while you are refilling it. If oil is spilt, be sure to wipe it
clean. Take caution because areas where the fixing oil is spilt can be slippery.

Your service representative will dispose of the used waste toner container. Use the seal

container.

• Used toner cannot be reused. Do not mix new and used toner together.

About the Paper Jam Troubleshooting Screen
The screen indicating the location of the paper jam appears on the touch panel display, followed
by instructions on how to clear the paper jam. This display repeatedly appears on the touch
panel display until the paper jam is completely cleared.

WARNING
• There are high voltage areas inside the copier. Be careful not to let metallic objects, such as
necklaces or bracelets, come into contact with such areas when you are removing jammed
paper or otherwise inspecting the inside of the copier. Doing so may result in burns or
electrical shock.

CAUTION
• When removing jammed originals or paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of
the original or paper.
• When removing paper which has become jammed inside the copier, take care not to allow the
toner on the jammed paper to come into contact with your hands or clothes. If your hands or
clothes become dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing with warm water will
fix the toner and make it impossible to remove later.
• When removing paper which has become jammed inside the copier, remove the jammed
paper gently to prevent the toner on the paper from scattering and entering your eyes or
mouth. If toner enters your eyes or mouth, wash immediately with cold water and consult a
physician.
• There are some areas inside the copier that are subject to high voltages and temperatures.
Take adequate precautions when performing internal inspections to avoid burns or electrical
shock.

• If paper is jammed in several locations, remove jammed paper in the order displayed on the touch

Inspect all areas which appear on the touch panel display, and remove any
jammed paper. See the appropriate pages for instructions on how to find and
remove jammed paper.
Always remove jammed paper slowly and gently to prevent it from tearing.
If a jammed paper tears while being removed, be sure to remove any remaining pieces from inside the
copier.

After you have removed all paper jams at the locations indicated on the
touch panel display, restore all levers and doors to their original positions.
Be sure to restore all levers to their original positions. Otherwise, the right and left front doors will not
close.

Continue with the procedure by following the instructions displayed on the
touch panel display.
Copying resumes once the copier is warmed up.
If there is paper remaining to be removed, a screen indicating how to clear that paper jam appears on
the touch panel display. Repeat the procedure from step 1.
NOTE
• You do not have to respecify the number of copies even when you are copying multiple sets. The
copier will automatically recalculate the number of copies to make based on the number of jammed
paper.

Frequent Paper Jams
If paper jams occur frequently although there is no apparent problem with the copier, either one
of the following two reasons may be the cause. Follow their respective instructions to resolve the
paper jam problem.
■ There are torn pieces of paper left inside the copier
Pulling jammed paper out from the copier by force may leave parts of the paper torn inside
the copier, leading to frequent paper jams. If paper tears while you are trying to remove
jammed paper from the copier, make sure that you remove all torn pieces.
■ The wire is dirty
The assembly wire is dirty and needs cleaning. (See ‘Cleaning the Wire’, on p. 2-43.)

Cleaning the Copier
If the original is not copied clearly, clean the following parts of the copier. For high-quality
outputs, it is recommended that you clean these parts once a month.
• Platen glass
• Rear side of platen glass cover
WARNING
• When cleaning the copier, first turn off the power switch and unplug the power cord. Failure to
do so may result in a fire or electrical shock.
• Do not use alcohol, benzene, paint thinner or other solvents for cleaning. Doing so might

result in the plastic parts becoming deformed.
CAUTION
• Unplug the power cord from the outlet at least once a year, and clean the plug’s metal pins
and the area surrounding them to ensure all dust is removed. Allowing dust to accumulate in
this area may result in a fire.

Originals Are Not Scanned Clearly
Clean the platen glass and the rear side of the platen glass cover by following the procedure
below.
IMPORTANT
• If the platen glass or the rear side of the platen glass cover is dirty, the original may not be scanned
clearly, or the size of the original may be detected incorrectly.
Clean the platen glass and the rear side of the platen glass cover with a
piece of well-wrung cloth dampened with water, then wipe them with a dry
cloth.

Originals That Have Fed Through the Feeder Are
Dirty
If originals that have fed through the feeder (option) are dirty or if marks not on an original
appear in the copies, the feeder’s feeding belt need cleaning.
Follow the procedure below to clean the feeder’s feeding belt:

• If streak marks appear on the originals, the feeder’s (option) rollers need cleaning. For instructions
on cleaning the feeder’s rollers, see ‘Cleaning the Feeder’, on p. 2-42.

The Touch Panel Display Is Dirty
The touch panel display needs to be cleaned. Wipe the touch panel display with a piece of wellwrung cloth dampened with water or a mild cleansing agent, then wipe it again with a dry cloth.
NOTE
• The touch panel display becomes dirty with use. It is recommended that you clean the touch panel
display once every week or ten days.

This section explains the various messages that appear on the touch panel display.
Error Messages
Self-diagnostic (error) messages appear on the touch panel display at the following times:
• When copies cannot be made because of some operational error.
• When copies cannot be made because the conditions necessary for copying are not met.
Perform the necessary procedures as indicated by the messages. The following describes some
of the messages that require further explanation.
NOTE
• The messages are listed in alphabetical order.
Add black toner.
Cause
: The copier has run out of toner of the colour indicated on the touch panel display.
Remedy
: Add toner of the colour indicated on the touch panel display according to the
procedure described in ‘Adding Toner’ (see p. 3-12).
Add fixing oil.
Cause
: There is little fixing oil remaining.
Remedy
: Follow the procedure given under ‘Refilling Fixing Oil’, on p. 3-19.
Adjusting... Please wait.
Cause
: The copier is making automatic adjustments.
Remedy
: Wait until the automatic adjustments are completed, and the Copy job will resume.

: The stapler unit is not functioning properly.

: The original cannot be recognised.
Remedy
: If you are using an original that cannot be detected, such as a transparency, turn
the Original Recognition function off and manually select the paper size. (See
Chapter 1, ‘Basic Copying’, in the Copying Guide.)
Paper is jammed in the indicated location.
Remove the jammed paper.
Cause
: An original or paper is jammed at the location indicated on the touch panel display.
Remedy
: Remove the jammed original or paper following the procedure described in
‘Removing Paper Jams’ (see p. 4-2).
Paper of the current size/type cannot be used with this mode. Set the proper paper size/type.
Cause
: Paper ran out during a Copy job, and paper of a different size and/or type is
selected.
Remedy
: Select paper that is of the same size and type as that which ran out.
Place the originals in the feeder.

: The originals need to be placed into the feeder (option) in order to make copies with
the specified settings.

The feeder is out of order.

: The feeder (option) is not working.

: Contact your service representative. You can continue to make copies without using
the feeder (option).
There is no designated area on the recognised original.

shock.

• Always grasp the plug portion when unplugging the power cord. Pulling on the power cord

damaged, electricity may leak and result in a fire or electrical shock.

Together with the edit pen, the editor is used for area designations, shift position designations,
and selecting colours from the colour palette.

• Do not use the editor near strong magnetic fields (cordless telephones etc.).
• Do not push down hard on the area designation board.
• Do not use the area designation board with conductors, such as metallic rulers, placed on it.

• When using the edit pen, avoid letting the cord come near to the tip of the edit pen.
• Do not touch the tip of the edit pen. This may result in an incorrect entry.
• Be careful not to let the connector of the editor come loose while the copier’s power is turned on
because this may damage the copier.

You can select colours by pressing on the colour palette sheets with the edit pen. There are four
colour palette sheets: colour sheet A, colour sheet B, colour sheet C, and a custom sheet.
Colour sheets A, B and C already have colours stored in them. The following illustrates the

■ Changing the colour palette sheet
Remove the current colour palette sheet by pulling on its handle located at the sheet
withdrawal opening on the lower-left side of the editor. Then insert a new colour palette sheet
through the sheet withdrawal opening.
IMPORTANT
• After changing the colour palette sheet on the editor, you have to change the colour palette sheet
setting under Additional Functions’ Custom Settings. For instructions, see ‘Specifying Colour Palette
Sheet Settings (Change Colour Sheet)’, on p. 2-19.

Functions of the Feeder
The feeder automatically feeds originals placed in its original tray to the platen glass for copying.
This eliminates the need to repeatedly place originals on the platen glass when copying multipage documents. After the copying of each original is complete, the original is delivered back
into the original tray.
■ Automatic two-sided original feeding
When two-sided copying is specified, the feeder automatically flips the original placed in the
original tray and sends it to the platen glass for copying.
■ Single sheet document feeding
Insert originals one sheet at a time into the single sheet document feeder. The single sheet
document feeder is useful for making copies of originals that you want to avoid getting curled
or folded.

- Transparencies and other highly transparent originals
Originals that are themselves colour copies may not feed properly through the feeder, particularly if
they are copies that contain a large amount of toner. For these types of originals, it is highly
recommended that you use the platen glass for making copies.
When you use originals that are themselves colour copies, it is highly recommended that you use the
single sheet document feeder. If you place originals onto the original tray, they may be folded or torn.
If you load colour copy originals and other types of originals together, the maximum loading capacity
changes to the following:
- A3:
25 sheets
- A4, A4R, A5:
50 sheets
Always check the condition of originals that have been fed through the feeder repeatedly. When
making copies of the same originals repeatedly, they may become folded or wrinkled and may not
feed smoothly.

Regardless of whether the originals are placed in the vertical or horizontal orientation, always set
originals with the first page on top and the top edge along the back edge of the original tray.
Slide the originals as far back as they will go, until the original set indicator lights.

• A5-size originals can only be placed vertically.
• Do not place originals of different sizes together into the original tray.

Note on Feeder Cleaning
If the feeder’s roller is dirty, black lines will appear on originals that have been fed through the
feeder for copying. Moreover, paper jams may occur more frequently, because of dirt that has
accumulated in the feeder. Whenever these situations occur, you need to clean the feeder. (See
‘Cleaning the Feeder’, on p. 2-42.)

If you attach the paper deck to the copier, you can load one other paper size in addition to the
paper sizes loaded in the standard drawers.
Up to 2,500 sheets (80 g/m2) of paper can be loaded into the paper deck.

• You may not be able to open the paper deck when the copier is in the Energy Saver mode. In this
case, press
(Energy Saver) to bring the copier out of the Energy Saver mode, then press the

Loading Paper into the Paper Deck
If you select the paper deck when it has no paper loaded in it, or if the paper deck runs out of
paper during a Copy job, a screen prompting you to load paper is displayed on the touch panel
display.
Follow the procedure below to load paper into the paper deck:
• When loading paper into the copier, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the paper.
IMPORTANT
• The paper deck can only accommodate paper from 64 to 105 g/m2 in weight. Use the stack bypass to
load paper that is heavier.
NOTE
• If the message is displayed during a Copy job, you have to press
(Start) after loading paper to
resume copying.

By making copies pass through the buffer pass unit, the stapler sorter prevents paper curl, which
hampers sorting and stapling. However, depending on the copy exposure setting, the following
situations can occur.
Sorting or Staple-sorting Stops
When making two-sided copies using the stack bypass, sorting may stop if the copies have
markedly different copy exposures on each side of the paper. Also, the sorting of A4R-size
copies may stop depending on the copy exposure. When this happens, the following message is
displayed.

clothes become dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing with warm water will
fix the toner and make it impossible to remove later.
• When removing jammed paper from inside the copier, be sure to remove it gently to prevent
the toner on the paper from scattering and entering your eyes or mouth. If toner enters your
eyes or mouth, wash immediately with cold water and consult a physician.

• When removing paper which has become jammed inside the copier, take care not to allow the
toner on the jammed paper to come into contact with your hands or clothes. If your hands or
clothes become dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing with warm water will
fix the toner and make it impossible to remove later.
• When removing jammed paper from inside the copier, be sure to remove it gently to prevent
the toner on the paper from scattering and entering your eyes or mouth. If toner enters your
eyes or mouth, wash immediately with cold water and consult a physician.

Paper that is jammed in the rear of the sort bins may be difficult to remove. When this happens,

NOTE
• If the Basic Features screen does not appear on the touch panel display even when the Control Card
is inserted, make sure that:
- The Control Card is inserted in the correct direction.
- The Control Card is inserted as far as it can go.
- An unusable Control Card is not inserted. (For example, cards which are damaged, cards already
used to the set limit, or cards prohibited from use.)
• Refer to the manual that came with the Control Card for detailed information on the Control Card.
