Q: How much are amateur
riders influenced by the look
of professionals?
A: I think there are two
camps of thought. Firstly, will
judges be pleased by your
appearance reflecting that of
a well-known rider that they
are used to marking high,
or, in contrast, do we risk
an ‘all the gear and no idea’
complex we sometimes feel?
It’s important to feel
confident, and the chosen
aesthetic is a major part of
that, so if channelling a hero
helps, then go for it!
Brands use sponsored
riders to trickle down trends
to the public, but will be
led by other disciplines or
trendsetters, too. Cavallo’s
2016 collection is influenced
by the Rio Olympics, so we
can all go for gold!
Q: What are your top tips to
keep competition clothing
in pristine condition?
A: Always hang up your
jacket and take off your
white breeches at the
earliest chance you get.
Most modern fabrics are
easy to machine wash now,
but adding extra dirt from
grooming and eating postcompetition (eg chips!) isn’t
going to help.
Using whitening products
will be useful, but never
tumble-dry breeches, jackets
or shirts; it damages the
elastic, fit and colour, which
will age your favourite kit.
The Cavagrip® ‘sticky’ seat
is hard-wearing and won’t
come off in the wash, unlike
some other silicon-based
textures; check what you
are buying for longevity.
Only use black shoe
polish on your boots, as any
conditioners or saddle soaps
will crack the leather and
