2012-2013 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY happens. Where excellence National award winning care Physicians represent 40% of the SMHC board – an innovative approach to hospital leadership developed by SMMC and now being replicated at hospitals throughout Maine. Begins. A new era of health care The dramatic changes reshaping our society are impacting health care at a national level and at your local hospital. The delivery of care and reimbursements for that same care are evolving to reflect the belt-tightening that has been a part of the American landscape since the onset of the recession in 2008. At Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) we are focused on staying ahead of the curve in shaping our services to ensure the highest quality of care. In 2012, we announced that SMMC and Goodall Hospital have come together as partners in Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC), the York County member of MaineHealth, one of the nation’s top 100 healthcare systems. We combined our strengths to increase efficiencies that will help control the rising cost of health care while ensuring high quality care for all our communities in the years ahead. While our names will remain the same for now, by January 2014 we will be a single organization known as Southern Maine Health Care. One thing will never change – our commitment to high quality care. In 2012, SMMC was recognized among the nation’s best in keeping patients safe from infections, injuries and medical and medication errors, receiving an “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group, a national organization that specializes in rating hospitals on safety. SMHC 2012-2013 Board of Directors We also achieved Pathway to Excellence® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the first community hospital in Maine and one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation to be awarded this designation. Our Cancer Care Program was again accredited with commendation by the American College of Surgeons and, just as we were preparing this report, we received notification that SMMC PrimeCare Internal Medicine was recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a top performer in quality for providing superior care to patients with heart conditions. These achievements are the result of an unwavering commitment to quality that is demonstrated daily by every member of our healthcare team. I am pleased by their efforts and honored to be a part of their team. Here, excellence happens every day. Strengths Combining for a healthier future for York County. For more than a century, SMMC and Goodall Hospital have served our communities with compassion, dignity, trust, and shared traditions of excellence. Now we’ve begun the process of integrating our services to serve you better. While our names remain the same for now, we will merge in January 2014 as partners in Southern Maine Health Care, the York County member of MaineHealth. We’ll be working together to continue to bring exceptional talent, technology and services to our communities in the years ahead. Award-winning nursing In 2012, SMMC achieved Pathway to Excellence® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center -- one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation and the first community hospital in Maine to be awarded this designation. Earning this distinction is no small achievement. Pathway to Excellence signifies SMMC’s commitment to its nursing staff and reassures patients that they can continue to count on SMMC and its nurses to provide care that’s among the best in the nation. To learn more, visit smmc.org/excellence. Rated one of the TOP HOSPITALS IN THE NATION for patient safety! Safety. Best in patient The moment a patient enters any hospital, safety is a priority. Healthcare teams spend a great deal of time focused on preventing medical or medication errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. So when SMMC received an “A” Hospital Safety Score in 2012 from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit organization run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, it validated SMMC’s commitment to providing excellent care, always. To see SMMC’s scores as they compare nationally and locally, visit the Hospital Safety Score website at hospitalsafetyscore.org. NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED cardiac care! Award Winning Care Best in cardiac Care. Heart attack and stroke can cause irreversible damage in a very short time. That’s why it’s important to be near experienced specialists using the latest cardiac treatments and technologies. When it comes to matters of the heart, SMMC’s cardiac team provides care that is second to none. Our skilled providers have received the highest ratings from the National Committee for Quality Assurance Heart/Stroke Recognition Program and Level III recognition by Bridges to Excellence for the exceptional care they provide. PrimeCare Physicians Cardiology Walk-In Care Most convenient non-emergency care in York County With the busy lives we lead, getting to the doctor during regular office hours may not be possible. In June 2012, SMMC made it a lot easier for everyone by opening its first Walk-In Care center at 655 Main Street in Saco. SMMC’s Walk-In Care is perfect for patients who require non-emergency care and are unable to see their regular doctor. Walk-In Care treatment is often times faster and less costly than an Emergency Department visit. To learn more, visit smmc.org/walk-in-care. SMMC OPEN 7 DAYS NOON TO 8PM 655 Main Street Saco, ME Patient Experience a. In-Room Dining Launch Dining In-room Enhancing the patient experience Hospital food isn’t what it used to be. And nowhere is that more evident than at SMMC. Because good nutrition and delectable meals are a key component in the healing process, in July 2012 SMMC became one of only 35 percent of the nation’s hospitals to offer an innovative room service program. Today our patients choose their meals from a restaurant style menu and decide when they want to eat it. Every meal is made to order by SMMC Café chefs and delivered by specially trained wait staff. It’s one of the ways that SMMC is making the patient experience even better to help the healing process. To learn more, visit smmc.org/patient-resources/in-room-dining. Community Commitment More than $29 million in benefits provided locally SMMC has a long and distinguished record for meeting the needs of our communities by providing a variety of innovative health and wellness programs while also ensuring the very best medical care for those unable to pay their medical bills. In 2012, SMMC invested more than $1.8 million toward programs designed to encourage good physical and emotional health for residents of our communities. We also provided $3.5 million in free care to those who qualified and absorbed over $20 million in care for which payment did not cover the full cost. As a non-profit organization, SMMC remains committed to finding ways to enhance the health of every resident of our communities, regardless of their ability to pay. We also look to implement programs that save money, like the MedAccess Program, so that we can all live healthier lives more affordably. MedAccess Saved more than $3 million in medication for our communities Because the cost of prescription medications can be significant, MedAccess, a free MaineHealth program, works with individuals and healthcare providers to identify ways patients can save money on prescription medications. In 2012, MedAccess saved SMMC patients more than $3 million by helping patients and healthcare providers evaluate options such as patient assistance programs from pharmaceutical companies, low-cost generic programs, and Medicare Part D and state and local prescription programs. There is no charge to patients or doctors for this service. To learn more, call 294-8141. Donor Listing We are very grateful to our generous donors who support the SMMC Annual Fund. I can’t even say having cancer has been a bad experience because of the wonderful people I have met while receiving my care. Helene (Langley, RN, Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator, shown at right above) has been beyond helpful guiding me along the way. It is with such appreciation that I thank every person who contributes to the Annual Appeal. Because of their contributions I have been fortunate to enjoy the comfort-side of care, not just the medical-side of care.“ Donor Listing Donor Profile Donor Listing Supporters Society (continued) ($100-249) Larry Dwight “Simply stated, SMMC is a well managed hospital whose staff is knowledgeable, competent and polite.
