The Best of
Both Worlds
Welcome to the 29th annual Docs on Ice charity hockey tournament. The
communities of Oakville and Halton Region are excited to be the host for
Docs on Ice 2011. With generous support from Halton Region and The Doctors’
Hockey Club, this important event will raise funds for local charity, bring a
positive economic impact to Halton, and have a significant impact on physician
recruitment and retention in the area.
We are pleased to support the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton as our
charity. The goal is to raise money to create the “Docs on Ice Resource Centre.”
This state-of-the-art facility will be located in Oakville, and will provide needed
resources to the residents of Halton living with Dementia. It will incorporate a
computer lab, reference material, and stimulating therapy to enhance healthy
brain development. The “Docs on Ice Resource Centre” will also increase
opportunities for socialization, counselling, and supports for people and their
families living with Dementia.

Welcome to Halton!
I am pleased to join our community partners in
supporting the Docs on Ice 2011 Charitable
Hockey tournament. Our sponsorship comes as
part of our Physician Recruitment program, which
helps us deliver effective health services in Halton.
As a former hockey player, I’m thrilled to be able
to share with you my passion for the game and to
showcase Halton.
Halton is a wonderful place to visit. It’s an even
better place to live, raise a family and establish a
practice. We have plenty to offer. With four hospitals
– Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital in Burlington and
Halton Healthcare Services in Georgetown, Milton
and Oakville – there are a variety of practice opportunities
for both family doctors and specialists. Our Physician
Recruitment program also supports the Halton McMaster
Family Health Centre family medicine teaching unit.
This community blends both rural and urban settings,
features Lake Ontario frontage, the majestic Niagara
Escarpment, a mix of safe small town life and country living, all
within the boundaries of the Greater Toronto Area.
Office of the Mayor
On behalf of Town Council and the residents of
Oakville, I am pleased to welcome all visitors
and participants to the 29th Annual Docs on Ice
Charity Hockey Tournament taking place April 7
to 9, 2011 benefiting the Alzheimer Society of
Hamilton Halton.
As a former manager, trainer, coach, convener
and board member for Oakville’s Minor Hockey
league, I’m especially pleased that this year’s
Docs on Ice Tournament is happening in Oakville.
Events such as this set a terrific example not only
for your profession, but for the community and
our young people. You are raising funds for a very
worthy cause and enjoying the excitement, fitness
benefits and camaraderie of Canada’s national sport.
I invite you to explore Oakville. Our aim is to be the most
livable town in Canada. That’s one reason we supported the
development of the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, with its
Olympic-sized ice surface, where you will be playing some of
your games, as well as Joshua’s Creek Arena.
Enjoy the tournament and good luck to all.
Our dynamic and fast-growing region is home to highly skilled,
educated and diverse residents, and offers an unparalleled quality
of life. Whether your recreational preference is hockey, golf,
hiking or theatre, you’ll find it and more here in Halton.
Sincerely yours,
Thanks for bringing your “A” game to our community in support
of the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton. And a big thank you
to all of the local businesses and community groups who have
helped support this tournament.
Mayor Rob Burton

Docs on Ice Oakville 2011 Committee
Dr. David Palmer, Chairman
A sincere welcome to all participants in the Oakville and Halton Docs On Ice Tournament from the staff and board of the
Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton. This promises to be a memorable event and we are proud to be associated with it as
the designated charity!
The Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton is facing unprecedented demand for its service across the region. We currently serve
over 3,000 individuals and receive in excess of 1200 new referrals of persons with dementia every year. Nationally there are
at least 500,000 Canadians living with dementia and of that number more than 71,000 are under the age of 65 and of those
50,000 are actually under the age of 60. As you will understand, the projections concerning what has been described as The
Rising Tide of dementia in our country are sobering. Within a generation the number of Canadians with Dementia will rise to
1,100,000 and the associated costs to Canadians for dementia care will escalate from $15 billion to $153 billion!
The Alzheimer Society has seen a rapid increase in local demand for services and support programs, all offered at no cost to the
client. Education programs, supportive counseling, together with caregiver support and discussion groups are made available
through our local office. Our First Link program offers individuals and families affected by dementia an easy way to connect
with the Society for information and support at the time of diagnosis and throughout the course of the disease. Moreover we
also provide professional consultation and support for long term care homes and community agencies.
Dr. David Palmer is a practising Family Physician in Mississauga and General
Manager for the Doctors’ Hockey Club, a group of Physicians comprising teams from
Mississauga, Oakville, and Burlington.
“It has been a challenging and rewarding experience organizing this event and I am proud
to lead one of the most successful tournaments of all time. Many thanks to my outstanding
committee and all the volunteers for their support.”
Dr. Rob Mascarin, Co-Chair
Dr. Len DeBolster, Co-Chair
Dr. Mascarin practices family medicine in Oakville,
Ontario. Dr. Mascarin and Dr. DeBolster have led
the fundraising campaign, and have raised an
unprecedented amount for Docs on Ice. Their
dedication to this event has been amazing.
Dr. DeBolster is a family physician practising in
Oakville. Founder and Director of the So Simple
Vasectomy Clinic, he loves hockey, has been
involved with Burlington Doctors’ Hockey Club for
the past 20 years and served as both Coach and
Assistant Coach in Oakville minor hockey.
“I’ve been involved with Docs on Ice since 1993 and
have been stuck in the I Division ever since!”
Dr. Pete Kujtan, Co-Chair
Many of these programs could not function as effectively as they do without the extensive financial support of individuals,
corporations and foundations from across the community. In fact, without your support and involvement the addition to our
programming of the much needed “Docs on Ice Resource Centre” would not be possible. This will be a lasting and appropriate
legacy that will continue to have a presence and a positive impact in our community long after the final game has ended!
Dr. Kujtan is a Family Doctor, Coroner, and Doctors’
Hockey Hall of Fame inductee who plays for the
Doctors’ Hockey Club’s Mississauga Tomahawks
Team.
As a society we are really grateful both for the opportunity to be involved in this wonderful tournament and for your generosity
in honouring our work in this way. It has been a privilege to work with the Docs On Ice Executive Committee and Halton
Region. Their commitment to the tournament and its cause has been exemplary and tireless!
“Welcome! This is my 23rd year with Docs on Ice. It is
refreshing to see the tradition carry on and flourish. This
event is about sport, camaraderie and charity. Pass quickly
and pass often but never ever just pass!”
Thank you for your involvement! May each one of you enjoy your time in Oakville and Halton.

Players
Divisional Champions are the team with the most points
obtained during round-robin play.
All players must be practicing MDs. Violation of this rule
will result in disqualification of the offending team from the
tournament. A maximum of five (5) residents are allowed per
team. No Medical Students will be allowed on Doctor teams.
Medical Students will have their own division. All players must
sign a waiver of liability.
Ties for first will be broken as follows:
Equipment
All teams must wear matching jerseys. The visiting team must
ensure that they are not wearing the same colour jersey as the
home team. CSA approved helmets with a minimum half-visor
are mandatory and must be worn by all players. Cages are
strongly encouraged. Goalies may not wear “Cat Eye” style
cages.
Games
Games will be two (2) periods of twenty-two (22) minutes each,
running time. There will be stop time in the final two (2) minutes
of the second period if the goal differential is less than two (2).
Each team will play two (2) games on Friday and two (2) games
on Saturday. Head to head play will occur between all teams
within a division, in a round-robin format. The winner of a game
will be the team with the most goals at the end of regulation
time. In the event of a tie, both teams obtain one (1) point.

Docs on Ice is an annual fundraising doctors hockey
tournament that began in 1983. It was inspired by the
memory of hockey player and Urologist, Dr. Peter Howes from
Peterborough, who was killed in a motor vehicle accident
in 1981. The tournament affirms the principals of Charity,
Camaraderie, and Sportsmanship. Docs on Ice is hosted by
a different city each year to raise funds for a local charity in
the host community. The tournament is run by physicians and
volunteers to raise money through donations, sponsorship,
registration fees, and special events. It is attended by high
profile celebrities, including NHL players and alumni, media
personnel, and television personalities. All proceeds go
directly to charity. Docs on Ice has grown over the last 29
years to include more than 800 physicians and 100 Medical
Students, with over 50 teams from across Ontario. To date,
Docs on Ice has raised over $1 million dollars for charity.
We are proud to announce that Docs on Ice has a permanent
home at www.docsonice.ca
Docs on Ice Hall of Fame
With locations throughout Ontario, call a Helix Hearing Care Centre today or visit our
website to find a clinic near you.
Each year, a player is inducted into the Docs on Ice Hall of Fame. They are selected for demonstrating an outstanding contribution
to Docs on Ice, and for displaying the true spirit of Doc Hockey, including sportsmanship, camaraderie, and fair play.

A leader
in evidence-based
natural products.
Striving to deliver the most trusted health brand on the planet through pioneering evidence-based natural
medicines that empower people to achieve their health potential, Afexa Life Sciences was born on the University
of Alberta campus in 1992, in its first two years doing contract research for pharmaceutical companies.
Transformed into a company committed to the commercialization of research successes, Afexa has since achieved
widespread recognition for its achievements in science and innovation, savvy in PR and marketing, and the
quality and consistency of its evidence-based natural therapeutics. Canada’s natural-health-product standards
are among the most stringent in the world; Afexa’s proprietary and patented ChemBioPrint® discovery- and
standardization-technology enables the development of effective and safe medicines from complex natural
sources, while ensuring reliable health benefits and batch-to-batch consistency, by applying the same scientific
rigour as was used to develop its lead brand COLD FX®.
The company’s most commercially successful product, COLD-FX was developed by a team of 25 scientists and
has undergone nearly a dozen clinical trials approved by regulators on both sides of the border and conducted
at universities in both the U.S. and Canada. The results of seven of these trials have been published in peerreviewed medical journals. COLD-FX has also received the highest sports-certification in the world from NSF
International, and in 2009 was chosen as the Official Cold and Flu Remedy of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic
Winter Games. Officially approved by Health Canada to help reduce the frequency, severity and duration of cold
and flu symptoms by boosting the immune system, COLD-FX has been the #1 pharmacist-recommended natural
cold remedy in Canada every year since 2006. The company’s other areas of ongoing research and clinical trial
include cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and immunology.
Paul Rosen, Sledge Hockey Goalie and Motivational Speaker
Paul Rosen is an honoured Guest at Docs on Ice Oakville 2011. A promising Midget
AAA hockey player, Paul shattered his leg playing hard in a 1975 tournament. A
second break and massive infection resulted in his leg being amputated above
the knee. Undaunted, Paul mastered the game of Sledge Hockey and made the
Canadian National Team in 2001. A year later, he played for Team Canada in the
2002 Salt Lake City Paralympics. Among his other hockey highlights are being
named the 2005 Winner of the prestigious Dan Snyder Memorial Award, and his
Gold Medal from the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games. Paul is currently
ranked the number one Sledge Hockey goaltender in the world.
