2009-10 Artist Series - Fairfield Iowa Convention and Visitors Bureau
2009-10
Artist
Series
O
n behalf of the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, its board
of directors and our supporters, welcome to the 2009-2010
Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts Artist Series. This season, the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center has partnered with
the Gallagher–Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of
Northern Iowa in an exclusive arrangement to bring international touring
performances to the Sondheim Center stage.
The 2009-10 Artist Series brings to Southeast Iowa audiences the
best of comedy with Fairfield native Shad Kunkle and Second City, the
nation’s premier traveling comedy
troupe. Deborah Raymond returns
home to perform classical and
light music in front of friends and
family and Diana Upton-Hill brings
her pop orchestra to the Sondheim
stage. This season also features
the finest in musical performance
with duo-pianos; the Winter Dance
Party tribute to Buddy Holly, Richie
Valens and the Big Bopper and the
silver medalist of the Van Cliburn
International Piano Competition.
Completing the season is “certified lunatic, master of the impossible”
vaudeville entertainer Tomás Kubinek; the 1940s musical revue In
the Mood and the part-theater, part-storytelling and part-history solo
performance of “Voices of Ellis Island.” This season also includes special performances designed to complement
the “Way Off Broadway” professional musical theater series, the
Chamber Society Fairfield series, the “Saturday Night at the Sondheim”
benefit series and other great music, theater and dance performances.
This season's programming quality and high level of artistic achievement
demonstrates the vision of the Convention Center and Theater upon
which this facility was founded more than ten years ago. That vision and
now, our new partnership with the University of Northern Iowa, make
our Artist Series possible. We promise you a rich and diverse season
of virtuoso performances, unforgettable experiences and extraordinary
entertainment.
We look forward to seeing you at the Sondheim!

Fairfield native, Soprano Deborah Raymond has sung
extensively in Europe and the United States, making
her critically acclaimed debut as Salome in 1988 at
the Semper Opera in Dresden, Germany. Subsequently
Ms. Raymond has performed this role in other German
theaters, with Utah Opera, Opera Carolina, Arizona
Opera and Des Moines Metro Opera. Critics have written
that Debra Raymond’s voice culminates in a rapturous
top. One has seldom experienced such a sensitive
princess since Cebotari. Don’t miss Raymond’s visit to
the Sondheim Center.
Joining soprano Deborah Raymond in a concert of
classical and light music is pianist Robert Mills, who is
presently Assistant Professor of music and vocal coach/
accompanist at Arizona State University in Phoenix.
Robert Mills has been opera coach/accompanist at the
Opera Institute at Boston University, as well as at the
American Institute of Musical Studies Summer Program
in Graz, Austria. Though the two have worked together
in preparation of various projects, they have never
performed professionally together and are thrilled to have
this opportunity to do so in Fairfield.

Much more than a concert, In the Mood
presents a retro 1940s musical featuring
singers, dancers and the sensational String
of Pearls Big Band Orchestra. The music
and the arrangements are as authentic as it
gets. This was a time that all America was
listening and dancing to the same kind of
music. In the 1940s, the combination of uptempo big band instrumentals and intimate,
romantic ballads set the mood for a future
filled with promise, hope and prosperity.
This was the time when the music moved
the nation’s spirit!

Voices from Ellis Island
by Pippa White
Voices From Ellis Island: The Gateway to America, the front door to
freedom, the Island of Tears. From 1890 to 1930, Ellis Island was the first
experience of life in America for millions of immigrants. Their stories are
amusing, frightening, inspiring, and true.
Pippa White is in her fourteenth year as a solo performer. She calls her
One’s Company Productions “part theatre, part storytelling, part history.”
Audiences call them unique, captivating, and touching. The Director
of Special Projects at the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs calls her
“the highest quality artist,” and the Kansas Storytelling Festival said her
performance was “one of the high points in our festival history.”
