Notes from AMI MAILBOXES All of us at Association Management, Inc. (AMI) wish you and yours a safe, happy, and healthy Holiday Season. Lynn, Harriett, Marisela, Cecilia and Jon TIS THE SEASON FOR ARCHITECTURAL APPLICATIONS Now that the Holiday season is approaching, you may be considering making changes or additions to your home. Please be reminded that anything that alters the exterior aesthetic appearance of your home, i.e., basketball goal, play equipment (including trampolines), patio cover, storage building, satellite dish, etc. must have your Association’s approval prior to construction or installation. If you’re building something that has a roof and/or sides, i.e., patio cover, storage building, you will need to include the following along with your application: materials including roofing, dimensions, height (measured from ground to peak), width and length, and a copy of your lot survey indicating the proposed location and a side view elevation drawing. Remember, metal, plastic, etc. are not permitted. If you plan to install play equipment, please include a copy of your lot survey showing the proposed location, the dimensions of the equipment (height, width and length) and color of the tarp. If you’re painting your home, please include a sample of the color(s) you wish to use. Basketball goals….include a copy of your recorded lot survey indicating the proposed location where you wish to keep the goal. Keep in mind that installation/construction may not begin until you have received your Association’s approval. It’s a real easy process and takes no time at all to adhere to your governing documents. You can apply by U.S. Mail, fax (713-9326059) or email ([email protected]) or via Fairfield Village’s website www.fairfieldvillage.org – whichever is easiest for you. An application as well as your Governing Documents can be obtained on line. If you have any questions regarding the process or what items to include with your application, please contact AMI at 713-932-1122. LAKE FISHING All the communities in Fairfield are concerned that children and adults have been seen fishing in the lakes. Because the lake water is neither treated nor guarded, there is significant potential for injury or disease. Please advise your children that under no circumstances are the lakes to be used for fishing or swimming. It has also been reported that dogs have been seen in the lakes. This is not permitted in Fairfield village therefore please refrain from permitting your dog in the lakes. Thank you. Association Management, Inc. Copyright © 2007 Peel, Inc. Parking too close to a mailbox, or placing items that may obstruct the carrier’s ability to get to the mailbox, whether it be a cluster box or an individual mailbox is presenting a problem. When this occurs, the mail carrier considers the mailbox blocked and returns the mail to the post office. It is unfair to hamper one’s ability to obtain their mail, especially since some mail may be time sensitive. If you or your guests find it necessary to park on the street, please look around to be certain there’s enough room for the carrier to deliver the mail. Thank you, Association Management, Inc. TRASH COLLECTION PARAMETERS LIMITS: Trash cans may not exceed 32 gallons in capacity nor 40 pounds in weight when fully utilized. Bagged waste may not exceed the 40-pound weight limit. Fairfield Community Gazette - December 2007 Lakes of Fairfield Board of Directors News This is the first information article for the residents of the Lakes of Fairfield Neighborhood Association, which consists of the sections The Estates, The Pines and The Lakes. A meeting of the Fairfield Village Community Association, Inc. and Villages Board of Directors was held on September 25, 2007. Some tidbits from the meeting include: 1. ATVs/go-karts driven on or adjacent to green belts continue to be a problem and Sheriff are doing their best to reinforce the “no motorized vehicles” rule. 2. Thefts from unlocked cars parked on driveways and opened garage are the most common crimes in Fairfield. Residents need to be vigilant. 3. To deter speeding problems near schools and within school zones, Fairfield’s Sheriff Deputies are looking into obtaining handheld radar units from their department. 4. In response to the Deputies request, Friendswood Development Company (FDC) has offered to fund the purchase of two law enforcement grade bicycles. They will be used to patrol areas of Fairfield not accessible by patrol cars such as green belts. Kudos to FDC! 5. Fairfield Community has roughly 4,800 homes and 15,000 residents. Separately, the annual budget meeting was held on October 23, 2007. Our neighborhood association is generally in good financial health. Due to anticipated increase in expenses, notably tree main- tenance and shared pool cost (longer pool hours), our neighborhood assessment for 2008 is increased by $10 to $470. (The Lakes of Fairfield has 287 homes, a $10.00 increase adds $2,870 in income.) Note that the next meeting of the Fairfield Village Neighborhood Association, Inc. and Villages Board of Directors will be on December 4, 2007 (Tuesday) at the Lakeside Trails Pool Club House starting at 7 p.m. As always, the meeting will be open to all residents. The Board of Directors consists of neighborhood residents Mark Gafford, Michelle Kim, Patrick Wong, and Tim Fitzpatrick and Tommy Weaver. Please contact one of the Resident Directors if you have any comments on this article or issues related to our neighborhoods. It’s seeing the giants, but stepping confidently into the future because you believe the promises of Christ. Walking with God is the difference between slavery to sin, and freedom in Christ. Announcing Cy-Fair High School Project Prom 2008 It’s finally here--senior year!!! There will be so much going on in the lives of seniors this year, and two of those exciting events will be Prom and Project Prom, May 2-3, 2008. What exactly is Project Prom? It’s a fun-filled after-the-prom event that provides a safe, chaperoned, drug-free and alcohol-free environment with games, prizes, and refreshments. The senior parents provide this all-night party. Who attends Project Prom? All Cy-Fair High School seniors and their dates are welcomed at Project Prom, whether they attend the prom or not. Historically, CFHS Project Prom has had approximately 90% of seniors attending and prizes including TVs and other popular items. How can you get involved? Fundraising and donations are vital to the success of Project Prom. We are a non-profit 501C3 organization, a booster club, and we plan enjoyable ways of raising the funds to cover the cost of venue rental, entertainment, refreshments, and prizes. In return for your donations and participation, your designated senior will earn points that are redeemed for play money, also known as Project Prom Bucks (PP$), which become chances to win prizes during the Project Prom evening. The more time or money that you contribute, the more chances your senior has to win exciting prizes. Grandparents and other relatives can make donations as well. Our meetings are on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Cy-Fair High School cafeteria and are open to all parents. Save the date for our first fundraising event, the Annual Cy-Fair Project Prom Charity Golf Tournament on November 2, 2007, at the Houston National Golf Club. Call or email Robert Calloway for more information about the tournament: (281) 744-9476 / robert@ calloway.com. Check your newsletter or our web site monthly for information about upcoming fundraising activities and events. We will be hosting two evening events for adults during the school year, Denim and Diamonds and Casino Night. These are events provide great food and entertainment while supporting a worthy tax-deductible cause. Waller High School Announces Results Of “Trick Or Treat So Kids Can Eat” Food Drive The Box of Stars Theatre of Waller High School would like to give a great big round of applause to all the Fairfield community members that supported our Trick Or Treat So Kids Can Eat Food Drive. The International Thespian Society (ITS), a division of the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), is pleased to announce the results of Waller High School’s Box of Stars Theatre participation in the International Thespian Society’s Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat program. On October 31, Thespian troupe 4901 collected 4241 pounds of canned and dry goods for the Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) and Waller Assistance and Restoration Ministries (WARM). Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat is a national community service program for ITS-member schools to collect canned and dry goods for local charities and food banks. Students from Waller High School’s Box of Stars Theatre participated in the Texas program. Thousands of pounds of food were collected across the state, giving theatre students the ability to help their local community. The Waller Thespian Troupe collected food items both on campus and throughout the community. This year the Box of Stars Theatre did 4 collection projects. They held a contest at school with a prize for the class that collected the most food. Next, they gave free tickets to their fall play production of A-Haunting We Will Go for anyone who brought in 20 cans of food. On October 28, the troupe set up collection stations at the front doors of Wal-Mart and Kroger stores at 290 and Spring Cypress. And finally, on Halloween night, 40 theatre students and 11 parents collected canned goods door to door in the Fairfield community. Over the course of these 4 events they generated 4241 pounds, which is double the amount they collected last year. While collecting in Fairfield students passed out coupons for a free ticket to THE SOAPS for anyone who donated, to be presented by the Box of Stars Theatre. There was an error on the coupon, which gave the wrong dates for the shows. The correct dates for THE SOAPS are November 29 and 30. For more information please feel free to contact Carrie Wood at [email protected]. Thanks again for all the generous support of the Fairfield Community! Copyright © 2007 Peel, Inc. Dear Friends, As the holiday season is amongst us, many of us are inundated with parties, gatherings, or work functions where we are surrounded by people and food. There is nothing worse then worrying about either another tooth breaking while at the gathering or being unable to properly chew the food. Some people feel that if they have missing teeth, they don’t need to do anything about it since they have other teeth still to function properly. For every tooth you lose, the other ones have to work that much harder. Teeth are not made to work any other way and when they do, other teeth wear down much faster, get loose, and subsequently fall out. That is why we must replace missing teeth. Now when you do get these replacement teeth, such as crowns and fillings, they don’t last forever. Think of your teeth as a car. Imagine driving your car through a muddy rainforest every day on a bumpy, dirt road where it never stops raining. Your teeth are constantly subjected to water, food, and biting pressure. Do you expect that your car will last forever? So just like you maintain your car with regular oil change and other services, you have to value your teeth as well and maintain them. Unlike a car, where you can get a new one if the old one breaks down, you cannot get new natural teeth once you lose them. I want to take this opportunity, on behalf of my staff and myself, to thank all of you who have supported us this year from the bottom of my heart. We also like to thank all the readers for enjoying our articles this year. We also wish you and your family the most joyful holidays. Ever wonder where marriage came from? How about the seven day week? Sin, sickness, salvation, death, the death penalty, the rainbow, music, weeds in your garden, different languages, and the legality of eating meat as opposed to vegetarianism? It’s all in Genesis chapters one through 11. That’s where all of the above came from. Man was created on the sixth day of creation, and God rested on the seventh, which simply means that He stopped working. Later God told Moses: “Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work… For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day” (Exodus 20:9-11). It’s been the model for the seven-day week ever since. As for weeds in your garden, you can blame Adam and Eve for that one. It was their sin which brought a curse upon the earth and forced mankind to work for his food. The ground began to bring him toil, and by the sweat of his brow man was made to work for food. Weeds in the garden today are just evidence of a cursed earth that awaits restoration at Christ’s coming. As for sicknesses, according to Gen. 3 they all came from sin, eventually resulting in death (Gen. 5). There is no fountain of youth, for all will die. God promised death to all of Adam and Eve’s offspring, and that’s exactly what’s happened ever since. But God also promised a “seed” of salvation (Gen. 3:15), the same seed later promised to Abraham, later to David, and ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. So Genesis 1-11 prefigures Jesus Christ who was also not only at the creation but the One who did the creating (Gen. 1:1; John 1:1; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:2). Music had its origin in Cain’s line (Gen. 4:17-22), the wicked brother of Abel who murdered him. Cain’s descendants were the inventors of stringed instruments and pipes. 34 Fairfield Community Gazette - December 2007 The rainbow was given by God to Noah as a promise to never again destroy the earth with flood waters. Prior to the flood of Noah’s day, some 1,500 years after creation, it had never rained before because God watered the earth through the subterranean waters which sprung up all over the land. But after the flood of the earth God hung his bow in the clouds, as it were, as an eternal sign of His promise to never again destroy the earth with water (Gen. 9:11-17). It was also during that time when God made His promise to Noah and his descendants that He also implemented the death penalty and allowed all of mankind to eat meat for the first time as opposed to just vegetables and plants (Gen. 9:3-6). God made it a standard that man should be killed for shedding another man’s blood through murder. The consequential killing of the murderer would not be considered murder for it was divine punishment for such. Finally, languages have their origin in Genesis 11. God had commanded mankind to spread out and multiply, but the people of that day decided to rebel and build a city where they could all live together. Then they built a large tower, a ziggurat, in order to make a name for themselves. So God came down, confused their languages, and thus forced them to spread out all over the earth. Their aspirations of making a name for themselves went out the window when they could no longer understand one another’s language. Of course some will call all of these accounts myths and dismiss them as such. But Jesus, Paul, Peter, Jude, and the writer of Hebrews all referenced these events from Genesis. Therefore, if they’re myths then Jesus was duped, and if Jesus was duped then He isn’t God. And if Jesus isn’t God then there is no salvation for us. Do you see how important Genesis is? The only ones who are duped are the ones who reject it. You just can’t understand the Bible without Genesis. Come join us at Harvest Bible Church for a steady dose of God’s word. These words of life have the power to bring you life. Consult our website at www. harvestbiblechurch.net. Copyright © 2007 Peel, Inc. He talks about how feel-good politically correct teachings created a full generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it. Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. Rule 3: You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone, until you earn both. Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss. He doesn’t have tenure. Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping - they called it opportunity. Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them. Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So, before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents’ generation, try delousing the closet in your own room. Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time. Rule 10: Television is NOT real life (nor are video games). In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one. ---William (Bill) H. Gates is chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corporation, the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential. Microsoft had revenues of US$36.84 billion for the fiscal year ending June 2004, and employs more than 55,000 people in 85 countries and regions. During the toddler years, children master basic skills as they gain muscle control, balance, and coordination. Each new skill lets the child progress to the next one, building on a foundation that one day will enable him or her to perform more complicated physical tasks, such as jumping rope, kicking a ball on the run, or turning a cartwheel. Toddlers want to do more than they may be physically capable of doing. This can be a powerful motivator that drives them to keep trying until they acquire a new skill, no matter what it takes. Take advantage of your toddler’s natural desire to keep moving. Even at this early age, a child is establishing patterns of activity that set the stage for the rest of childhood. An inactive toddler is less likely to be active later in life. Developing Skills Playing and learning are completely enmeshed for toddlers, so acquiring the long list of skills below should be fun and games for them. Parents should give toddlers many opportunities to practice their developing skills - and provide a lot of supervision so they stay safe while they learn. In addition to these physical accomplishments, toddlers are developing in other ways. Provide opportunities for your child to explore, ask questions, use his or her imagination, and practice fine motor skills, such as stacking blocks or coloring. Know which physical skills your child is working on now, and which ones will come later. Early toddler skills (12-24 months) • Walks independently • Pulls/carries toys while walking • Stoops and gets back up • Begins to run • Kicks a ball • Holds railing up/down stairs • Walks backward Older toddler skills (24-36 months) • Balances 1 to 2 seconds on one foot • Climbs well • Bends over easily without falling • Runs and jumps well • Kicks ball forward • Alternates feet up and down stairs • Pedals tricycle • Throws ball overhand How Much Activity Is Enough? For children 12- to 36-months-old, current guidelines recommend this much daily activity: • at least 30 minutes of structured physical activity (adult-led) • at least 60 minutes unstructured physical activity (free play) As a general rule, toddlers shouldn't be inactive for more than 1 hour at a time, except for sleeping. That's a lot of work for parents and caregivers, but a lot of much-needed activity for toddlers. Encourage your child to be active, and remember how much he or she is learning along the way.
