On June 6, kids voted for their favorite name for the penguin we will be adopting. Our adopted pet penguin will be named Chilly. Voters chose Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater as their favorite penguin book and the majority voted that they would not want a penguin as a pet. Adult must attend.! 3 Literacy Tutors Honored On April 20, at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville, two very special individuals were honored for the exemplary volunteer service they provide to our community. Eileen Sribnick and Carmen Navarro were named Literacy Suffolk, Inc. English for Speakers of Other Languages Volunteers of the Year. Most Friday mornings you can find Carmen and Eileen instructing our unique Family Literacy class to moms who come to the library, children in tow, with only one goal in mind, learning to speak English. Eileen and Carmen devote many volunteer hours planning lessons and finding interesting topics to help parents assimilate into our sometimes, very confusing culture. Along with this award, Eileen and Carmen received accolades from County Executive Steve Levy and Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning. Congratulations Carmen and Eileen from the Literacy Office and the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library Board of Trustees and Library Director.
