WELCOME NEW ZOO ADMINISTRATOR:
JASON JACOBS
I often plan vacations around seeing zoos or
wildlife, and in the winter of 2009 my travels
brought me to the state of Arizona and Reid
Park Zoo. During my tour, I was impressed
by the Zoo’s collection, grounds, diverse
education programs, and the fact that the Zoo
seemed to be the perfect-size experience for a
family safari throughout Africa, Asia, and South
America. While I visited the Zoo, I briefly met
with former Zoo Administrator, Susan Basford,
who showed me architectural drawings and
renderings for a planned new elephant exhibit.
Fast forward four years and I am very excited
to be the new Zoo Administrator and those
drawings of a proposed new elephant habitat
I saw have become Expedition Tanzania,
one of the finest elephant habitats in a North
American zoo.
The Zoo’s mission of conservation, education,
and recreation is similar to the operation of a
tripod; all three legs have to work together
to meet our goal of providing engaging
education programs, supporting conservation
projects that span the globe, and providing our
community with a world class zoological facility
that creates life long memorable experiences
such as feeding a giraffe or watching our herd
of elephants. None of these goals would be
possible without the successful partnership
between the City of Tucson and Reid Park
Zoological Society - as well as the support of
you, our members.
So what’s next? Long term plans include a
new veterinary hospital and a hippopotamus
exhibit.
I would like to hear from our members as
to why you enjoy the Zoo, what we mean to
your family and to the community, and what
changes you would like to see in the future.
Finally, I’m pleased to hear I’m not the only
new resident at the Zoo! Over the next several
months we look forward to introducing you to
new exciting additions including the grizzly
bear cubs Ronan and Finley, and the black and
white ruffed lemurs.
See you at the zoo,
Jason Jacobs
Zoo Administrator

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT
An ultrasound has confirmed
that Contessa the tapir is
pregnant! Contessa is trained
to stand on a scale, and
Keepers noticed she was
steadily gaining weight. Based
on the ultrasound results, we
anticipate a birthdate sometime
in October.
YOUR ZOO
Male llama “Mapache” was
joined by female guanaco
“Amalia” in June. Guanacos
are adapted to dry climates —
in their South American habitat
they lick cacti to get moisture
and nutrients. Welcome to
Tucson, Amalia!
We are pleased to introduce another brand new species to Tucson—black and white ruffed
lemurs. What’s a “ruff?” It’s the hair that runs along the edge of a ruffed lemur’s face, from the
ears to the chin. These primates are critically endangered in their native habitat, the rain forests
of Madagascar. Lemurs make a lot of noise! The name “lemur” means “ghost” in Latin. The first
people to hear their calls thought they sounded like ghosts in the forest. Lemurs use their calls
to communicate with one another over long distances in the forest. Zoos are working together
to maintain a healthy captive population of black and white ruffed lemurs, and Reid Park Zoo is
excited to have a breeding pair of lemurs here in Tucson.
Following the Zoo’s reducereuse-recycle philosophy, we
re-used the left-over beer
kegs as animal enrichment.
Makena explores a leftover
keg. All of the alcohol was
removed from the kegs by our
thirsty patrons beforehand,
of course!
Meet “Ronan” and “Finley,” two 18-month old grizzly bears who arrived
at Reid Park Zoo in July. The two bears were captured on the Flathead
Indian Reservation after repeatedly raiding garbage cans, chicken coops,
and livestock feed storage buildings in a residential area. We partnered
with US Fish and Wildlife Service; Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife,
and Parks; and The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes to bring
these bears to their new home at Reid Park Zoo. Their exhibit, which
will open at the end of the summer, will feature educational information
about how our actions can help prevent human/bear conflict in the wild.
Over $20,000 was raised for our
new Brown Bear Exhibit through
our first annual Brew at the Zoo
event. A huge thank you goes
to Austin Santos of 1702 and
Craft Tucson for spearheading
the event. Mark your calendars
for June 14, 2014 for the next
Brew at the Zoo.
