The Sheraton Kauai Resort
The retreat will be held at the Sheraton Kauai Resort. This luxurious
facility is located on the southern tip of the island. It is situated on Poipu
beach, among the most beautiful beaches in the world. It is 16 miles
from the Kauai airport at Lihue, Hawaii.
The resort is an island in itself. The grounds cover 20 acres and are a
tropical wonder with palm trees, exotic gardens, and koi ponds providing
a never-ending play of color, light, fragrance, and sense of seclusion.
The full range of services and facilities includes two swimming
pools, massage and fitness centers, tennis courts, guest news library, plus
a host of beach activities. Nearby, you will find championship golf
courses, shopping, and scenic hiking trails.
Resort amenities -- included in the hotel package -- include daily
breakfast buffet, sunset Mai Tai punch hour, evening torch lighting with
Hawaiian entertainment, lessons in making leis and hula dancing, inroom robes, and more.
Quilters have the choice of a shared room
(double occupancy with another quilter)
or a private room. You also have the
choice of a Garden View room or a
Deluxe Ocean Front room.
Shared
rooms will have two double beds.
Private rooms may be requested with one
king or two double beds
The Island of Kauai
Kauai, the Garden Island, is the oldest of the
main Hawaiian islands. It is considered the most
pristine of the main islands with its many white
sandy beaches and verdant mountains and valleys.
Scenic sites include picturesque Hanalei Bay, the
Na Pali Coast, and Waimea Canyon -- the "Grand
Canyon of the Pacific." Kauai also boasts the only
navigable river in Hawaii, the Wailua River that
flows from inaccessible Mt. Wai'ale'ale.
The harbor at Lihue (lee HUAY)
A favorite for movie directors looking for paradise, Kauai's
spectacular beauty has provided the backdrop for a huge array of
films including South Pacific, Uncommon Valor, King Kong,
Fantasy Island, Blue Hawaii, The Thorn Birds, Jurassic Park, and
Six Days, Seven Nights.
Quilting Activities
Quiltsmart will host the Quilter's Retreat in Paradise at the Sheraton Kauai Resort January 11-15, 2004. Come sew
up a Pacific storm with Quiltsmart on machines provided by Pfaff. Retreat events will begin Sunday afternoon and end
mid-day on Thursday. Highlights include a meeting of the Kauai Quilt Guild, lessons in traditional and modern
Hawaiian quilting techniques, shop hops to the island quilt shops, and a luau.
Our goal is to provide a fun and rewarding trip-of-a-lifetime experience for
quilting enthusiasts. We are planning a variety of quilting-related activities.

Who should attend?

Any enthusiastic quilter
Quilt shop owners and teachers
interested in Quiltsmart's techniques
VSM Sewing, Inc. dealers or educators.
Cancellation Policy: The retreat will be limited to 40 quilters. Beyond
that number, we will keep a waiting list of those interested in
attending. Should you need to cancel after December 1, we will refund
the amount paid less the $125 deposit if we are able to fill your spot
from the waiting list.
Don't worry about lugging your sewing machine halfway around the world.
Pfaff USA has agreed to provide state-of-the-art sewing machines. A Pfaff
educator will be on site to help you get the most out of it. And if you fall in
love with your machine, we can arrange for it to follow you home!
Skill Level
Quilting Tools and Supplies
This retreat is intended for serious quilters. Guests need not
be experienced in Quiltsmart's techniques, however they
should be proficient in making quilts. Novice quilters may
attend, but you MUST be proficient in the basics of rotary
cutting, stitching consistent seam allowances, and zigzag
stitching. Expert assistance will be available. Most of the
techniques taught involve machine piecing and machine
appliqué with the notable exception of traditional Hawaiian
appliqué.
Quilters must provide their own cutting tools, fabrics, batting,
and thread. Remember: You will NOT be allowed to carry
scissors or rotary cutters onto an aircraft in carry-on baggage.
A limited supply of notions and cutting tools will be available
in the sewing room, as will irons. Additional supplies and
fabrics may be purchased at quilt shops on the island.
Non-Quilting Companions
Meals
You are welcome to bring a golfer, surfer, snorkeler, or
other companion to share your private room. Out of respect
for the other quilters, companions will not be allowed to
participate in the quilting activities (shop hop, sewing room,
lessons, guild meeting). They are welcome at retreat meals
and the luau, but there will be an additional per-meal
charge.
In addition to the daily breakfast buffet (included as a room
amenity), quilters will also receive dinner on Sunday through
Wednesday and lunch Monday to Thursday. Coffee and tea
will also be available continuously in the sewing room. One
evening meal will be a traditional Hawaiian luau. Meals will be
served buffet style. The buffet will provide a fixed menu of
delightful dishes, selections will be available for those with
special dietary needs. Non-alcoholic beverages will be
provided with meals.
Pfaff sewing machines will be provided, but you may also bring
your own. International guests, please be aware that electrical
outlets will be US standard 110 volts; if your machine requires
220 volts, you must supply your own adapter.
Ground Transportation
Air Transportation
We will provide ground transportation on Kauai to all
retreat activities. Should you wish to roam the island on
your own, a variety of taxi services, tour operators and
rental car agencies are available.
Airfare is not included in the retreat fee. You will be
responsible for air travel to and from the island. Airfares will
certainly vary considerably depending on your circumstances.
For example, we found round-trip coach airfare from
Minneapolis to Lihue, Hawaii for $650 to $1550 per person!
Shop wisely and book early.
Early Arrival and Extended Stay
Attire
There are several good reasons to arrive a day or two early:
adjusting to jet lag, getting the lay of the land, airfare
discounts for Saturday stays, and inter-island flight
connections to name a few. Should you wish to arrive early
or extend your visit to Kauai, we would be happy to arrange
additional nights with the retreat hotel.
Come as you are! Attire at all events will be "resort casual.”
Shorts, sundresses, and sandals are quite appropriate. Bring
comfortable walking shoes for the shop hop and luau, and don't
forget sunblock and sunglasses.
