Issue 8, 28 May 2014
Wednesday 28 May 2014 Issue No. 8 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REFLECTION …
Over the last three weeks, I have had the pleasure of team‐teaching with twenty‐one staff on the Year 8 Imagine Project. Teams of approximately seventeen students and two staff have worked together on Imagine Melbourne in 2050. This student‐directed project allowed them to define their topic and decide, as a group, how they were
going to research, discover, dream and, finally, deliver to their peers Melbourne as they picture it in 2050: see
page 2 for photos.
The recent kidnapping of over two hundred school girls in Nigeria, and the subsequent burning of their school, is a
blatant reminder of how fortunate our students are to be able to come to school without fear because they are
receiving an educa on. The stark contrast of being involved in the Imagine Project and teaching and learning in
our wonderful school community should remind us all of what a privilege it is to a end Star of the Sea.
There is much excitement as we prepare for the College produc on in Term 3, Li le Shop of Horrors. See page7
for the list of par cipants and other relevant informa on.
At last week’s College assembly, I reminded the students of the importance of wearing our school uniform with
pride. Wearing the uniform reminds students that they belong to a wonderful community and their affilia on to
Star with its long and rich history from which they will benefit far beyond the school gates. Students who don’t
have a wri en explana on from parents or guardians for being out of uniform will receive an a er‐school
deten on. I ask for your support in ensuring your daughter is dressed correctly in school uniform as described on
page 10 of the Student Diary.
Many awareness‐raising ac vi es have taken place across Star’s Week of Reconcilia on, including saying a
morning prayer and flag‐raising at the College flagpole: see page 3 for the report and photos. From our morning
prayer each day this week, we pray:
God of all people, open our hearts to the plight of so many indigenous Australians who live in poverty and who are denied basic human rights. Open our eyes to the beauty of Aboriginal culture expressed through art, dance, literature, film and other cultural pursuits. Open our hands in friendship to people of all ethnic backgrounds. May our feet walk in ways of peace and jus ce toward a fair and just future for all Australians. May our small ac ons this week – our deeds and words – promote a deeper understanding of the richness of our Australian land and all her people. Amen. other amazing young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. What a wonderful opportunity! Molly Burke (Year 8) has been selected for the School Sport Victoria Under 19 Soccer team
to play in the Na onal Tournament in Sydney this August. At 13 years of age, this is a very impressive
achievement!
YEAR 8 IMAGINE PROJECT The aim of the Year 8 Imagine Project is to develop 21st century learning ‐ cri cal thinking, crea vity,
communica on, collabora on and teamwork. I was extremely proud of what the students were able to achieve by
embracing these important educa onal skills. Their efforts culminated in a very entertaining morning last Friday
when twelve groups presented their insight into what Melbourne should be like in 2050 … when they will be 50
years old!

MEDIA INTERNSHIP … As announced in April 2 issue of the newsle er, Maddie Kelly (Year 10) and Neve Mahoney (Year 11) recently
completed a week‐long media internship with Jesuit Communica ons. They worked in an editorial team of six
students from Victorian Catholic schools to develop the spring edi on of Australian Catholics. The spring edi on is inspired by the theme, Be Brave, referencing a quote from Pope Francis: Ask Jesus what he wants from you and be brave. Students met with journalists from a range of backgrounds and developed the
publica on from ini al brainstorming through ar cle research and wri ng phases, photo shoots and layout
consulta on.
We congratulate Maddie and Neve, thank the staff at Jesuit Communica ons and look forward to reading the
fruits of their reflec on, skill and labour late on this year.

Maddie’s reflec on … To be completely honest, the only reason I decided to apply for an internship at the Australian Catholics magazine was because Mum ‘strongly encouraged’ me. I’m also trying a new thing this year … stepping outside of my comfort zone and doing things that I wouldn’t normally do. So I applied, with the help of Ms Muirhead, genuinely thinking that the chance of me ge ng in was next to none. You can imagine how thrilled I was when I found out that I had been accepted. Ms Muirhead drove me to our first mee ng at Jesuit Communica ons. During this hour and a half session, we par cipated in ‘get to know me’ ac vi es and discussed our thoughts and ideas surrounding the theme of the issue, Be Brave. I liked this theme because you could explore the ideas from both the generic stereotypes of bravery ‐ ie. firemen, policemen and soldiers ‐ or from a more abstract view ‐ ie. the small displays of bravery people show on a daily basis. During the week of the internship, I used public transport for the first me by myself. I was in a working environment of people I had only met once before … it was slightly awkward. We all soon became incredibly close friends and connected over the strangest of things. The internship was such a valuable and rewarding adventure that it has re‐confirmed both my considera on of a career in journalism and my love for wri ng. I would strongly recommend this opportunity to any Year 9 or 10 student who has a passion for wri ng as I have learnt so much ‐ not to men on how lovely it looks on my CV! Thanks to Ms Muirhead, Andrew Hamilton and Michael McVeigh as, without them, none of this would have been possible. Madeline Kelly Year 10

Year 9 ANZAC News …
Last Thursday night, the year level gathered together in the name of
Fun.
The theme was set: we were to dress from a range of decades ‐ from
the 60s through to the 80s. It was great to see so many interpreta ons
on the theme and, for some, a very long walk down memory lane.
Fun Night is so important for the cohort to bond and celebrate in each
other’s company. It was a night of much dancing, singing and laughter.
On behalf of the students, I would like to extend a very big thank you to
the Year 10 Hospitality students and Ms Palatsides who prepared the
food for the func on and to the many behind‐the‐scene helpers,
including parents. A huge thank you to Mr Russell and both Sara and
Olivia for the Combi Van Photo Booth.

Sport News ...
The GSV team sport season is drawing to a close with the final round of home‐and‐away games being played this
week. Once again, we are very fortunate with our depth of talent amongst our netballers which helps produce a
good number of finals contenders. At this stage, seventeen out of a possible twenty netball teams look like
making it through to finals ac on.
Hockey is not necessarily regarded as a tradi onal sport at Star with netball domina ng the Term 2 sports.
Nevertheless, with some good coaching from Mr Phyland and Miss Snape in the junior division, our teams have
been developing from year to year. This season, our senior and intermediate hockey teams have remained
undefeated; our junior team has only narrowly lost the one game. It is an unfortunate reality that, despite not
losing a game, our senior team may miss out on finals due to an unfavourable goal difference. We will need to
wait un l mid‐week to see whether or not the teams have been successful.
Close to seventy students ventured to Yarra Bend in Fairfield on Tuesday, May 20, to contest the GSV Preliminary
Cross‐country Championships. Early morning training sessions and a me trial at Dendy Park had our students
suitably prepared for the first main event on the cross‐country calendar. Finishing third behind Ruyton and Loreto
was no mean feat and this result guarantees our team a spot in the Division 1 Championship carnival on Friday at
Bundoora. Outstanding performances by Ciara Losty (Year 8) – finishing 1st in the junior event, Annabelle Eastman (Year 9) – 2nd in the intermediate event, and Talissa Picone (Year 12) – 9th in the senior division helped
establish a strong founda on for the rest of the team
AFL football has, once again, been a huge hit with students from all year levels playing against other GSV schools
on Friday a ernoons. Our senior team, consis ng of students from Years 9 to 12 and playing a modified fi een‐a‐
side format, have certainly found some form of late, winning their last two matches. They will play their last game
this Friday against Ruyton at Elsternwick Park. Our junior teams, on the other hand, play the AFL 9s format and,
from all reports, have enjoyed the season so far. As our junior Team 1 hasn’t lost a game to date, they have been
offered the opportunity to play at the MCG this Sunday a ernoon during the half‐ me interval of the game
between GWS and Hawthorn. It should be a memorable experience for all those involved.
Sign‐ups for the Term 3 sports of junior badminton, volleyball and soccer are now open and will remain so un l
Friday, 6 June. All students wan ng to try out for these sports are urged to sign‐up via the Google Doc link
emailed to them. Should any problems be encountered, do not hesitate to see one of the PE staff.

INAUGURAL NAGLE DAY A HUGE SUCCESS! The very first Nagle day was held last Friday, 23 May where Nagle students and teachers united at lunch me to
celebrate a shared passion and love for their house.
It began with a bang when Nagle girls, many wearing their Nannies and Newborns athle cs costumes, gathered
for a sausage sizzle, raising $245 for Wellness Springs for Women, a charity closely linked to the Presenta on
sisters.
Following the delicious sausages cooked by dedicated Nagle staff, the girls joined in a giant game of pass the
parcel and an hysterical limbo compe on. It was great to see girls from all year levels having some fun together.
Overall, the day was a huge success and a great way to celebrate an enthusias c and successful Nagle house.
Many thanks to the Nagle staff, leaders and senior students for their generous help with set up, pack up and
organisa on behind the scenes. Most importantly, thank you to the Nagle house members for a ending and
showing commitment and support for their house.

Youth and the future of Olympism in a digital world
(how do we engage youth online to be active offline)
Olympism – Going back to what it was
In the time of the gods, war and corruption
Where swords were swung, for power and lust
All stood still at the arrival of an Olympiad
To admire the strength and unwavering conviction
Of athletes who dedicated their bodies to sport
In honour of Zeus, and their hero Heracles
But now in a time of technology and screens
Where idleness is key and anonymity essential
The hands of the clock flow without interruption
And only the committed can win society’s approval
Inspiration no longer lies with the youth
As they do not see the splendor in movement
So the question is posed, to all humankind
How do we rewind the hands of time
And go back to an age where wars were stopped
To rejoice in the beauty and power of athletes
To be pulled from the technological mirage
And connect with the values of initiative, teamwork, and sportsmanship?
We should inspire the young in their hi-tech realm
By painting the elite in the image of the gods
But we cannot succumb to the pressures of technology
Only adapt and move along with the times
By asserting the value of physical activity
Which can ultimately seat you next to the gods
Egalitarian principles guide the Games
To bring all races together as one
Glorifying the human being’s ability to overcome
Its limitations of mind, body, and soul
And so we applaud:
Olympism, building a better world through sport.
