Conner Prairie’s Headless

torch arriving
today at Conner Prairie.
The party begins at 5 p.m., with the Headless Horseman gates to open at 5:30 p.m. and
the torch to arrive at about 6 p.m.
And how cool is this? Conner Prairie
guests can line the torch route, which travels
through the Symphony on the Prairie bowl
and up in the air aboard the 1859 Balloon
Voyage. Also, bring your cameras, because
the runners will pause throughout the route,
at the balloon, with the Headless Horseman
and outside the Apple Store. And that same
night, Conner Prairie will debut is Bicentennial Bison, which is part of the statewide
Bison-tennial Public Art Project. You might
recall seeing all of the painted bison statues at
this year’s Indiana State Fair?
After the torch run, there’s plenty of time
to enjoy Conner Prairie.
Attending Headless Horseman is a tradition
in my own family and actually ever since I
came to Noblesville.
Through the years, I’ve greatly enjoyed
watching how the program has grown. While
there’s no more barn dancing, there are a
lot of other fun activities at the Halloween
festival in Conner Scairie. Have your fortune
told, watch Ed the mad scientist harness the
powers of ghosts, and get beauty advice from
Beautisha, a cosmetic-loving witch. See “The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow” marionette show,
sing and dance in the scary-o-ke tent and hear
ghosts stories by Holly Ween. You can even
cast your vote for the next mayor of Conner
Scairie.
Headless Horseman is open Thursday
through Sunday, through October. If you’ve
been there, you’re aware of the lengthy wait
for the haunted hayride. My advice is to go
early before the gates open or do like us: buy
Voyager-level season tickets, which allows
admission every night Headless Horseman
is open, plus two guests for free, and an Express Pass to bypass the lengthy hayride line
for a shorter one. That’s the part I like.

Hamilton County Emergency Management along with the Hamilton County
Local Emergency Planning Committee
are playing host to a three-day training
exercise through Friday, at the training
grounds located on River Road in Noblesville.
Designed to test and train first responders, the exercise will present real-life
situations officers may encounter in Hamilton County as well as assess the tactics,
skills, and equipment used to respond to
those situations.
“This exercise has been 6 months in
planning, countless meetings, developing scenarios and getting personnel and
equipment scheduled,” said Erin Rowe,
director of Hamilton County Emergency
Management.
The training, conducted in partnership with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s
Office, Noblesville Police and Fire
Departments, Carmel Police and Fire
Departments, Westfield Police and Fire
Departments, Cicero Fire Department,
Fishers Fire Department, Indiana State
Police, Department of Natural Resources,
Hamilton County Public Safety Communications, and the Red Cross, is part of
an on-going series of trainings to foster
cooperation among the many jurisdictions
represented in Hamilton County as they
prepare for a variety of responses to natural and man-made disasters.
Multi-agency responses also provide
practical experience in using the Incident
Command System that are instituted
in cases of a large scale emergency or
disaster.
“It’s always great to work together in
training situations, so we’re better prepared for an actual event,” Rowe said. “It

What makes Allen Patterson smile? “Seeing people enjoy our

Hamilton County Parks & Recreation. He is also proud because
he will carry the state’s bicentennial torch at 3:15 p.m. today
from the West Bell Tower at Coxhall Gardens to the driveway of
the Lucas Mansion, riding in a Subaru sponsor car. “This is a
huge honor for me, my family and HCPR, who nominated me. I
will be carrying the torch in honor of all who have contributed to
what we have been able to accomplish during the 24-1/2 years
I have been director here. I am humbled by the opportunity to
be a part of our state’s bicentennial celebration.” His brother,
Mike, chosen for his dedication as a Subaru employee, on
Wednesday carried the torch inside Lafayette’s Subaru plant.

Noblesville Main Street, Hamilton
County Tourism and the City of Noblesville will welcome the Bicentennial Torch
to downtown after it makes its way through
Hamilton County Thursday.
The festivities begin at 5 p.m. on 9th
Street and Logan Street adjacent to the
Courthouse lawn.
Logan Street will feature booths and
information on many Noblesville-based
community groups. The State of Indiana’s
Bicentennial Experience will be on Logan
Street in support of the event.
North 9th Street will house a local vendor area with Indiana-themed merchandise
and a game truck for younger attendees.
At 6 p.m., the Hunter Smith Band will
perform under the tent on the northwest
corner of the Courthouse lawn. The group
will break momentarily to recognize the
torch when it enters the event around 7:20
p.m. and will resume playing until 8 p.m.
Dignitaries from across the county and
state are expected to welcome the torch
downtown where it will be housed in a new
piece of public art. Local metal artist Bonnie Ramirez designed the cauldron used
to hold the torch. After the event, the city
planning team will collaborate once again
to incorporate this piece into downtown as
a usable piece of public art and a bike rack.
“The Noblesville Bicentennial Celebration will be an event centuries in the making,” said Brenda Myers, president and
CEO of Hamilton County Tourism. “We
hope to gather people from all Hamilton
County communities to celebrate Indiana’s
past, present and future.”
The event is also sponsored in part by
Church, Church, Hittle & Antrim.
The planning team is watching the
weather for the evening of the event.
Should an adjustment need to be made for
safety or weather purposes, notification
will be issued via the Noblesville Main

It’s not just for the young
Few things benefit the
body more than maintaining physical fitness. While
doctors have typically
recommended exercise for
younger patients, we’re
realizing how important
it is for our older patients
as well. Regular exercise,
even in one’s senior years,
can still reduce your risk
of a number of health conditions, particularly heart
attacks and strokes. It also
may be one of the few
things to slow the onset of
dementia.
Most communities are
blessed to have many
options available for exercise, especially those that
are supervised. I prefer
these activities because a
trained professional typically leads the group. This
person can make recommendations to get the most
out of the program in the
safest way possible.
Why is regular exercise
so important for seniors?
You may have noticed
that as our bodies age a
number of physiologic
changes occur. We lose
muscle mass and tone that
leads to weakness, reduced
flexibility, and problems
with balance. Our bones
become weaker from a
lack of weight-bearing
activity. Balance problems
and weak bones lead to
falls and broken bones.
Our hearts and lungs can
get out of shape causing reduced stamina and
difficulty breathing with
activity. This leads to an
overall reduced level of
confidence & independence
Regular exercise can
go a long way to delay or
even reverse some of these
effects of aging. Exercise
is a critical component in
the treatment and preven-
John R. Roberts, M.D.
Hamilton Health
tion of conditions such as
arthritis, diabetes, high
blood pressure, obesity,
elevated cholesterol, heart
disease, stroke, dementia,
depression and anxiety.
Exercising in the water
is one of the best and
safest ways for seniors
to work on their fitness.
Aquatic programs are
excellent for people with
painful arthritic joints,
especially the knees, hips
and back. Water buoys up
the body, reducing stress
on the joints. The natural
resistance of the water to
motion helps build and
tone muscles and also improves balance. I even had
one patient a few years ago
who faithfully attended his
aquatics classes and was
able to graduate from his
wheelchair.
Exercising on dry land
is certainly acceptable.
Again, I usually recommend supervised programs
such as Silver Sneakers®.
This is a program that is
available to many seniors who have Medicare
supplemental plans such
as Humana that pay for
memberships at a partnered exercise facility.
More information on the
program can be found at
www.silversneakers.com
or by calling 866-587-
7389. Simple things like
gardening, yard work, or
walking are certainly better
than sitting on the couch.
Walking should always be
done in a safe area that is
flat and well lighted.
One benefit of regular
exercise that most seniors
don’t consider is socialization. Often seniors have
become socially isolated
either through the death
of a spouse or friends.
These organized exercise
programs provide a way
for seniors to get out
and interact with people.
Most of my patients who
have joined one of these
programs can’t wait to get
back for the next session.
Regular exercise is also
very good for improving
mental health and keeping
the mind sharp.
Many seniors simply
don’t want to be bothered
with a formal exercise
program. Any exercise is
better than no exercise, but
seniors need to be careful
not to do too much too
fast. Certain medical conditions may preclude doing
certain types of activities.
If you are considering
starting an exercise program, it’s always a good
idea to discuss it with your
physician. This is true especially if you suffer from
obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, lung
disease, have had a stroke
or smoke. Your doctor
may even provide you with
an “exercise prescription”
that outlines what he or
she wants you to do or
avoid.

ARCADIA – Members

High School clubs are
pooling their time and
efforts to help collect new
and gently used coats for
the Hamilton County Kids

Representatives from the
Honor Society, Student
Government, Love Is,

working together to help
ensure residents of all ages
in their community will be
a little warmer this winter.
The groups are collecting winter coats of all sizes at the high school now
through Friday outside the

donations of gently used
hats, scarves, gloves and
mittens are also being
accepted.
“Infants and adult
sizes 3X and larger are

just our school,” said Crecelius, coat drive co-chair.
Hamilton County Kids
Coats, started in 2004, has
grown in size and scope.
Today, the program has
17 sponsor churches and
the Merciful HELP Center
as well as the continued
support of the Good Samaritan Network.
Coat giveaways will
take place at five different
churches on two Saturdays
in November. Hamilton

many schools, churches,
libraries, and businesses
that are hosting collection
sites. Last year, some

The Guerin Catholic Golden Eagle girls soccer team continued their tournament run Saturday, upsetting No. 2 Avon.
Vuotto guides Golden
Eagles to Regional victory
By Maria Leichty
[email protected]
CARMEL – Golden Eagle
junior Elle Vuotto has swooped
in for two game-winning goals so
far in Guerin Catholic’s IHSAA
girls soccer state tournament run.
The first was against No. 6 Zionsville in the Sectional semi-finals, the second was against No.
2 Avon in the Regional semi-finals Wednesday.
The wind was blowing in favor
of the Guerin offense in the first
half and Vuotto said she wanted
to capitalize on that.
“I was thinking I had to get it
in,” she said. “We had to score
in the first half or else if they
get back at us in the second half,
they have the wind.”
Sophomore Kelsie Smith made
the cross from the left side and
Vuotto rerouted towards the
bottom left of the goal. Avon’s
Michaela Till dove to her right
and barely missed Vuotto’s incoming shot. Guerin celebration
ensued.
“All year, Elle has really been
flirting with being a big moment
player for us,” Golden Eagle
head coach Jonathan McClure
said. “She’s one of our more
creative and confident players on
the ball with or without pressure,
with or without space. She’s seen
enough repetitions at this point
in the season that she has enough
confidence to step in and take her
looks like she did on that one and
it was good for the game winner
again.”
Avon’s offense had come out
strong, especially since they
were coming off a 5-0 win over
Guerin in the regular season. But
Guerin used their recent momentum to change the tides.
With goalkeeper Chandler
Edwards and midfielder Danielle
Mason unable to play, other
players had to step up.
“With two of our good players
getting hurt, we just had to fight
through it and we all just said,
‘we’ve made it this far, we can
keep going,’ Vuotto said.
Guerin’s other key player to
step up was freshman goalkeeper
Sarah Stagge. Stagge stepped in
for senior Chandler Edwards,
who is out from a back injury.
This would be her first start
at goalie this season, and Coach
McClure gave her the nod.
“Regardless of what year you
are in school, when your number
is called, you get to show if you
were paying attention all those
times,” he said. “Sarah was
obviously paying attention and
made some big plays for us and
helped move us on to Saturday.”
Stagge made a game-salvaging
save in the last few minutes when
Avon took a free kick aimed for
the top right of the goal. Stagge
tipped the ball just above the bar
and out-of-bounds.
“She did an absolute brilliant
job for us,” McClure praised.
“She made the saves that were
there to make and everybody in

Smith, Adele Stradling and Nici
Gordon held strong against Avon
attackers as the minutes ran out
and Guerin took their first Regional win in Class 2A ever and
their first Regional win overall
since 2008.
“So far we’ve been pretty
good at trying to have the other
team chase us and trying to keep
everything ahead,” McClure
said. “We’ve grinded it out,
played gritty and worked for one
another and we were able to get
another result tonight.”
Guerin will look to stay ahead
of No. 4 Brebeuf as they face
them for the Regional championship Saturday at 2 p.m. at Carmel High School. Brebeuf defeated
North Central 4-0 Wednesday.
Millers make easy work of Mavericks,
advance to Regional Championship
Millers, Orioles
fight for higher
conference finish
By Connor Mills

LOGANSPORT – It was a wet
night in Logansport where the
Millers matched up against the
McCutcheon Mavericks in the
IHSAA girls soccer Regional 4
semi-final game. Noblesville had
no trouble with the conditions,
however, taking the victory 3-0.
The Lady Millers were on a
roll coming into the game. After
closing out the regular season
strong, they went on to capture
the sectional championship
defeating two conference foes in
the process.
Noblesville wasted little time
before putting points on the
board. Maddie Rauch scored 6
minutes into the game to give
the Millers a 1-0 lead. Her goal
was impressive but her hairstyle
took the cake as she debuted
her “corn rows” that she had
done after winning the sectional
championship.
“I feel like the corn rows help
me play. My motto is look good,
feel good, play good.” Rauch
said.
Shortly after taking the lead
Noblesville would strike again,
this time from the crafty attacking midfielder, Taylor Crowe.
Both teams were silent from
the 30-minute mark all the way
until 5 minutes remained in
the half when the Miller Laney
Reister was fouled, prompting
Although most Hoosier Crossroads Conference eyes will be
on the HSE, Brownsburg game,
the Noblesville Millers and Avon
Orioles football teams will fight
for a 4-2 record, which would
tie the winner with Westfield and
whoever loses the title game.
The Millers are coming off a
huge upset against No. 6 Brownsburg last week in a 22-21 affair.
“It taught our kids that there’s
value in playing the full 48 minutes,” Miller head coach Jason
Simmons said of the game. “We
were inconsistent in the first three
quarters. In the fourth quarter we
played as well as we could play as
a total football team.”
Both sides of the ball, particularly the defense, will be looking
to carry that momentum into the
Avon game.
Avon’s offense spreads the ball
between two or three main tailbacks – Bryant Fitzgerald, Sampson James and Corey Dupriest.
Dupriest is also a go-to receiver
as well as Luke Shayotovich and
Isaac Guerendo.
“We have to capture their ball
carriers, whether it’s their receivers or especially their tailbacks,”
Simmons said. “They run three
guys at tailbacks that are electric.

a penalty kick by Taylor Crowe
for her second goal of the game.
With just over two minutes
remaining in the half, the Mavericks were in the box looking
to score but Noblesville keeper
Mackenzie Kincaid held strong,
collecting one of many impressive saves on the night.
The second half proved uninteresting as neither team scored
or even put many shots on goal.
The Millers were able to hold
on to their large first half lead,
winning the contest 3-0.
Noblesville will travel back to
Logansport to battle the Marion
Giants Saturday at 2 p.m. Marion defeated Yorktown 2-0 in the
regional semi-final game before
the Millers took the field.
“We saw a few minutes of
Marion tonight, we’ll scout and
get some reports, but it's about
us playing well this time of
year,” Miller head coach Mike
Brady said regarding Saturday’s
matchup. “It's not so much what
Marion does but how well we do
what we do.”

Oriole head coach Mark
Bless took a similarly opposite approach against the
Miller defense.
“I feel like we have to
have a balanced attack
against Noblesville,” he
said. “Their DL is very
good and plays physical,
I think we have to play
physical upfront in both the
running game as well as
our passing game protection.”
Grant Gremel will be
looking to lead the Noblesville offense after his

week, in place of Ryan
Barnes.
“Grant has done an excellent job of preparing and
our kids have a great deal
of confidence in Grant,”
Simmons said. “It changes

The rushing-heavy
Barnes-led offense was substituted for a passing-heavy
attack under Gremel.

key targets and Simmons

The training consists
of a simulated hazardous materials release of
anhydrous ammonia as
the result of the discovery
of a lab manufacturing
methamphetamine. First
responders will deal with
multiple scenarios from
the discovery of the meth
lab, the release of hazardous materials, the possible
contamination of soil, air,
and water, and the resulting cleanup of property
and personnel.
A disaster situation such
as this may necessitate
mutual support by agen-
cies across the county so
inner-agency training is
important. Responders
from the participating
agencies will be rotated
through the exercises
during the three-day
training.
Carl Erickson, EMS
deputy director, said one
of the goals of the exercise
was to help law enforcement and fire departments work more closely
together.
“The two groups already work together, but
training like this helps the
mesh even more so. Each
agency gets a better idea
of the needs of the other,”

Erickson said.
Motorists and residents
along River Road near

the course of the three day
exercise that run between
