Welcome!
YOU’Re WeLCOMe TO HIKe IN
FINLAND!
Finland offers a wide range of
hiking opportunities. Finland is a
country of opposites and contrasts,
which you can enjoy with each of
your senses. Finland is a clean,
quiet country where you can enjoy
the feeling of space, the calm of
the wilderness and the bustle of the
lake districts.
BReATHe: your lungs will fill with
fresh, clean air. You will enjoy it.
TAsTe: the berries and mushrooms
of the forests and their fresh taste.
The white nights give their own
strong aroma to the berries. Finnish food is simple and made from
nature’s own raw materials.
Welcome to OutdoorsfFinland.com, an online resource for hikers
OutdoorsfFinland.com has been designed for those seeking activity
holidays in the wilderness. Whether you prefer to cycle, hike or paddle,
the website is the perfect place to visit as it will describe each route
and provide factual information on it, such as length, level of difficulty
and estimated duration. Every map provides GPS location settings and
shows the most important services en route.
There are plenty of new alternatives, destinations and places popular
with Finns themselves. We have wanted to highlight small places and
little treasures where you will feel that you really are in quintessential
Finland, in the countryside, small villages, down by the water, in
the shade of forests and in the peace of the wilderness. We have also
wanted to highlight new service providers and companies that have
been operating on the domestic market, but have the expertise and
professional skill to serve international customers too.

areas and products, which we have been
mapped, studied and approved. These
are well-known routes in Finland that
independently-minded hikers have already
been hiking along for many years.
Enjoy your hiking trip!
sMeLL: the salty scent of the sea,
the resin of the pine trees, the
sharp bite of autumn in the air. Finland is full of nature’s own smells,
clean and fresh.
HeAR: Finland is quiet and calm. In
the forest you can hear the knocking of the woodpecker, the singing
of the birds, the bustle of the trees.
At the lakes you will hear the lapping waves. It’s like a meditation,
and is guaranteed to carry you away
from everyday routines.

WHAT TO DO
In addition to hiking and day trips,
the observation of nature offers a
huge range of different possibilities. You can observe and admire
nature and get acquainted with its
dwellers. You can pick mushrooms
or berries or wonder at natural
phenomena.
The saimaa ringed seal
The extremely endangered Saimaa
ringed seal lives only in Saimaa.
The ringed seal was isolated in the
Saimaa basin approximately 8,000
years ago, when the connection of
the lakes to the Baltic Sea was cut
off at the end of the Ice Age. The
population is strongly concentrated
in central Saimaa, Pihlajavesi and
Haukivesi.
Photographing and viewing large
carnivores
The quiet sounds of the wilderness
travel far in the misty night, and a
tense excitement is in the air. Especially in the eastern borderlands,
from North Karelia to Kuusamo,
there are many businesses that arrange trips to see large predators.
Bears, wolverines (rare even globally), lynx, wolves and foxes are often
seen at photographing spots.
Bird-watching
Liminka and Siikalahti are popular
destinations for birdwatchers. In
Virolahti the migration of Arctic
birds, Arktika, is the most impressive of the local events in the avian
world. On an arranged bird-watching trip, you can go deep into
old forests to see the mating of
grouses, or watch the majestic sea
eaglesi nt hear chipelago. Download APP:

An Adventurer’s
Paradise
THe NATURe OF INLAND
The breathtakingly beautiful archipelago, the enchanting Finland of
a thousand lakes, the old forests
reaching high into the borderlands,
The spacious wilderness of northern Lapland and the magic of the
fells – an adventurer’s paradise
In the wilderness of Lapland you can hike for days without seeing
anyone else. The large wilderness areas are uninhabited and almost in
their natural state. The footpaths follow age-old tracks. They climb on
top of the fells, run through valleys and along riversides.
the magnificent wilderness of northern
Finland! The land of opposites will
reward the nature tourist and sooth the
hiker’s mind and soul. Finland has it all!
Popular wilderness destinations in Lapland include the national
parks and the numerous large travel centres, such as Levi, Ylläs and
Saariselkä.
Thanks to free public access, the hikers
can roam the great outdoors nearly
everywhere in Finland.
The rugged old forests of the eastern borderlands and the tall hills – a
trekker’s dream
The footpaths run among the deep green fir groves, climbing to the
sandy ridges and into a landscape marked by red pine trunks. From
the high hills there are splendid views to the blue, glimmering lakes.
The most popular of the eastern hiking routes is the Karhunkierros, 80
km long. The varied landscapes and the mystical mood of the eastern
borderland hiking route (160 kilometres) will reward the walker.
The hiking footpaths in North Karelia go through the most beautiful
national landscapes in Finland.
Gate to Finnish nature –
national parks, hiking areas
and other protected areas
The national parks of
Finland are unique. They
present archipelagos dotted
by islands and islets, virgin
forests reaching quietly to
the sky, lakes glimmering
in a thousand shades of
blue, and the wilderness of
the Lapland fells. There is
something for everybody.
Whether you’d like to walk
in the wilderness along ageold tracks or go for a short
nature trip with your family,
you can find what you want
in Finland.
Popular destinations include Ruka, Hossa, Kylmäluoma, Vuokatti, IsoSyöte and Koli.
Did you know that Finland…
• is the 8th largest country in Europe
southern Finland – cultural history and a coast filled with islands
In southern Finland and along the coast, among the settlements, are old
pieces of bedrock, rocky beaches with meadows and ridged islands with
sandy beaches. The groves filled with oak, maple, ash and elm trees
are in bloom in the spring in a carpet of green. The Salpapolku path
in the eastern borderlands (50 kilometres) is a testament to Finland’s
war history. Rokua Geopark is the northernmost location in UNESCO’s
Global Geoparks Network.

Finnish Lakeland – the country’s most popular holiday destination
The hiking footpaths of the Finnish Lakeland are best suited for day
trips. At Repovesi, differences in elevation challenge the hiker. From
the top of Neitvuori there is a breathtakingly beautiful view of a lake.
The national parks of Linnansaari and Päijänne have footpaths that
run mainly through easy terrain. The Evo hiking area and the Häme
lake highlands give an opportunity to experience quiet, wilderness-like
nature near busy towns. In addition to the numerous national parks,
popular destinations include the hiking paths of Loma-Päijänne, the
Siikalahti birdwatching path and the Oskari and Nestori nature centres
near Savonlinna.

7 DAYs/6 NIGHTs
Day 1. Helsinki–Lohja, 60 km
The area surrounding Lake Lohjanjärvi features a wealth of natural and cultural
sights and locations – it is an extremely popular travel destination. You have the
opportunity to canoe, cycle and hike. The atmospheric Karnaisten Korpi wilderness is a place to experience the tranquillity of nature 25 m above a motorway.
The Karkali Strict Nature Reserve is among the most beautiful herb-rich forest
areas in Southern Finland. The Torhola Cave is a 30 metre natural cavern, which
is one of the largest in the country.
Day 2. Lohja–Forssa, 90 km
The landscapes of the Torronsuo National Park represent Finnish nature at
its most authentic; the expansive mire has looked the same for thousands of
years. At the Liesjärvi National Park, the past comes alive on the Kortetniemi
Heritage Farm, where you can try your hand at the chores of days gone by.
On foot, you can visit the old and atmospheric Ahonnokka forest area and the
magnificent Kyynäränharju Ridge, which cuts through the lakeside landscape.
Day 3. Forssa–Padasjoki, 123 km

You can also stay overnight in lean-to shelters and designated camping sites.

Sites. A 2 km forest trail meanders through the area. The landscapes of the

with an incredible view.

The largest and most diverse wetlands of Southern Finland are within the
boundaries of the Valkmusa National Park. The River Kymijoki adds its own
interesting splash of colour and motion to the spacious scenery. The Gulf of
Finland National Park is known for its diversity of bird species, and its war history. The best way to explore the park is by boat. There is a regular passenger
boat service during the summer.
Day 6. Kotka–Helsinki, 134 km
On the way to Helsinki, there are many beautiful small towns dating back
to the shared history of Russia and Finland. The Sipoonkorpi National Park
provides a habitat for almost 80 endangered species. The heritage landscape
