Of all the very talented women who painted the patterns we know and love so well on our favorite pottery, Betty arguably had the biggest personality. She was outgoing, bold and very funny and told wonderful tales of her time working at the Watt Pottery. I first met Betty during the former Watt Pottery Collectors USA club convention in Crooksville, OH, in July 1997. She was handpainting classic Watt patterns on various pottery pieces for members. We waited in line for our turn to get a Betty Ford original, but by the time we got to the front of the line, Betty said she was very tired and needed to stop for the day. We had brought a blank #33 pie plate for her to decorate. She gave us her home address and asked us to mail the pie plate to her and she would paint something on it and send it back as soon as she got the opportunity. I did as she instructed when we arrived back home from Ohio. About 1 1/2 months went by, and I had honestly forgotten about the pie plate. One day in late August, a package arrived in the mail from Betty. We were excited to see what kind of Apple, Rooster or Starflower she had painted. When we opened the box, we nearly fell over! On the pie plate was an absolutely beautiful and ornate scene of a blue jay perched on a branch among leaves and colorful flowers, with a sponge-painted rim. She signed and dated the front. On the back she painted the simple note: “Jim & Rich - Your friend, Betty Ford 8-97.” Betty was a true original and a friend to many. She and the other Watt decorators will always live on in the pieces we cherish! Best wishes and happy collecting. I’m sure many of you have similar tales of getting your first few pieces from a grandparent or another relative. I know I do! Let me know how you began collecting Watt and I’ll include your profile in a future newsletter. I inherited this old cupboard from my grandmother when she passed away in 1992. It originally belonged to my great grandmother who was born in 1867. While cleaning out the cupboard, I discovered a bowl that had an apple on it. At the time, I had no idea what Watt pottery was. I found another matching bowl inside another cupboard, so I decided to take them both home. Later, when I found out they were Watt pottery, I started searching for more. The search included my husband and two sons. We went to many antique shops and flea markets. That was in 1992, and I now have a large collection which I occasionally add to. Nancy Robbins Troy, Ohio Nancy continues to collect and shared one of her recent flea market finds a #17 Par-T-Que pitcher for $10. What a deal! It’s very special that Nancy inherited two Watt bowls from her grandmother, as well as a beautiful piece of furniture in which to showcase items from her now much larger collection! Great Member Finds Linda Josheff of Cross Plains, Wisconsin, wrote: “Here is a photo of a [Starflower #17] pitcher we found at a moving sale a couple of months ago. It was the end of the day and this pitcher was still there!! You can see the price tag...$5.00. It is in excellent shape.” What a steal! Tommie Bragwell of Hodges, Alabama, bought the group of Watt below at an auction in a tiny rural community in Alabama. It sold as one lot. The winning bid was $17 x the count. Tommie thought it was a great deal for $289. I completely agree! Editorial Policy All correspondence and photos become property of Watt’s News. Photographs used in the newsletter can not be returned. Letters may be edited for length, grammar, etc. If you expect a reply, please provide a self-addressed stamped envelope or email address. 2 WCA: Minnesota Bound A s I write this, there are signs of spring in Texas and promises for warmer temperatures when the 22nd Watt Collectors Association Annual Convention convenes in May in Minnesota. It has been a hard, long winter, so why not join friends and collectors as we celebrate Watt pottery and say goodbye to cold weather and all that snow! Final preparations are underway for the convention in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, which takes place May 24-27. I am excited about the program we have put together based on input from you, our members, submitted after last year's convention. Directly below is an article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel sent in by Eileen & Matt Irving of Oconomowoc, WI, on classic advertising pieces used in home decorating. Note the nice selection of Watt Apple pitchers with advertising on the right side. Below is an article from the April 2014 issue of Country Living Magazine. Tucked toward the back in the left image is a large Watt Kitch-N-Queen mixing bowl filled with ripening tomatoes. This article was sent in by Elisa Kotewa from Fairmont, MN. Have you seen Watt in print lately? Send the article to me and I’ll feature it in a future issue of Watt’s News! ne of the most memorable moments of my early days collecting Watt pottery was meeting a group of original Watt decorators at the former Watt Pottery Collectors USA club convention in Ohio. Below is an image from my original copy of Watt Pottery: A Collector’s Reference with Price Guide by Dennis Thompson and W. Bryce Watt that I had all of the ladies in attendance sign, including Betty Ford (second from left). It was so much fun seeing them receive the star treatment and the accolades they deserved for, as one of them said, “Just doing our job.” Below is a color image of the Betty Ford custom-decorated pie plate referenced in my letter on the front page. As you can clearly see, Betty’s talent was immense...plus her generosity was great. She will be missed, but she certainly left a lasting legacy for us all! 7 Seen on H ere’s a look at some noteworthy items that have come up for sale on the ebay® Internet auction site over the last several months, along with the sellers’ locations and high bid prices. #02 Apple Refrigerator Stacker (Partial Set) – Columbus, OH: $997.65 #505 Apple Teapot – Glendale, AZ: $2,551.66 #15 Kitch-N-Queen Pitcher – Chadds Ford, PA: $211.30 #616 Kitch-N-Queen Extra Large Bowl – Sioux City, IA: $350.00 #8182 Teardrop Canister Set – Location Not Specified: $869.89 #16 Double Apple Pitcher – Bristol, TN: $659.00 Moon & Stars Small Covered Bowl & Custard Cup – Wichita, KS: $171.50 #29 Apple Dinner Plate – Reading, PA: $457.44 #95 Morning Glory Cookie Jar – No Location Specified: $369.00 8 Policeman Cookie Jar – Fisher, WV: $500.00 #98 Apple Covered Sugar Bowl w/Adv. – Minneapolis, MN: $365.00 WCA Board Reports From the Vice President Message from the President B y the time you are reading this, I sincerely hope that the brutal winter of 2013-2014 is finally over. I know that we will have snowbanks in our area yet. With the ending of winter, there is an event that everyone should be planning for – The 2014 Watt Collectors Association Convention in St. Louis Park, MN! This is again shaping up to be a great convention. I got a preview of the auction and there are again some very nice Watt items for sale. Marty Evans has done a great job in putting the auction together. Please plan on attending this year's convention. Some great seminars, the Wine Social, Watt Bingo, the annual banquet and the fun auction are just a few reasons to join us. I hope all is well in your neighborhood, and I look forward to seeing you in May. Happy collecting! Phil Meyer WCA President F olks, in a little over a month the WCA convention will be here, and we still have a lot of work to do to get ready. We need displays for the Display Room, and we need items for the Rare Table. There will be a surprise in the Display Room, so you won't want to miss this! Fellow collectors, I'm really begging, as we need someone to run for President and Convention Chair. Convention Chair is a position that can be shared. I hope someone will help us out. The board has put together another great convention. We will need volunteers for the display room for 1 ½ hour shifts. This is your organization and without people coming to the convention and volunteering in the various areas, there will not be a Watt Collectors Association. We also ask that you make some suggestions as to what you would like to see at upcoming conventions. Let's keep the club together so we can continue to collect Watt and foster the friendships that we have formed over the years. I look forward to seeing a lot of new and old faces this year! Richard Houghton WCA Vice President WCA Board Minutes H ighlights of recent WCA board meetings are on the WCA website. Log in and view them in the Members section at http://wattcollectorsassociation.com. From the Commemorative Chair A t the time I am writing this, I do not know what the final count will end up being for the 2014 commemorative orders. I can only hope that we will pass last year's total. In my conversations with Karen Nyberg at Artists in the Park, they are keeping up the production at a steady pace and they are in line with the orders I am receiving. They tell me everything is going smoothly. I can't wait for everyone to see this wonderful piece that will be unveiled at the General Meeting on Friday during this year's convention. Again this year, we will have some surprises mixed in with the commemorative handouts at the convention. Some of you will be lucky enough to pick a winning number. This could be a "Salesman Sample" advertising piece, a free one- year membership renewal or a free convention registration for 2015. I hope all of the members that have ordered are receiving their confirmation postcards or emails in a timely fashion. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. My contact information is located on the front page. Looking forward to seeing everyone at convention in Minnesota!
