Madisonville-Hopkins County is Western Kentucky’s easiest

and lose yourself. We’re just 49 miles south of Evansville, Ind.,
104 miles northwest of Nashville, Tenn., and 153 miles southwest
of Louisville.
Let us point you to the best trails, hunting spots, streams and
views. Outdoor lovers will enjoy hiking the 13-mile Pennyrile
Nature Trail, kayaking the Tradewater River, boating on Lake
Beshear, horseback riding at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park,
cycling the trails at Grapevine Lake or taking on our ATV park.
Other outdoor recreation opportunities include a world class 18hole disc golf course and four challenging traditional golf courses.
Excellent hunting and fishing opportunities await you at one of
our four wildlife management areas totaling more than 7,000
acres.
Time your visit just right and enjoy our many festivals and
activities. Catch a performance by a world-renowned artist at
the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts. Spend summer nights at
Elmer Kelley stadium watching the Madisonville Miners baseball
team. Shopping enthusiasts will find antique shops and unique
boutiques in downtown Hanson, Kentucky’s smallest historic
district, as well as mall shopping at Parkway Plaza Mall or
Factory Stores of America.
While in Hopkins County, plan to stay a few nights. Standard

Lake Beshear
Dawson Springs
One of the best bass fishing lakes in Kentucky is located at the
edge of Dawson Springs, and at the center of Pennyrile Forest
State Resort Park. Lake Beshear is also known for white crappie,
bluegill, green sunfish, longear sunfish, channel catfish and blue
catfish.

Enjoy scenic overlooks, abundant wildlife, and views from the
bluffs of the Tradewater River as you meander along this 13.5 mile
trail that stretches from Dawson Springs to Pennyrile Forest State
Resort Park. Hike the whole trail or access portions of it via
parking areas on two state roads.
Grapevine Lake

Bring your reels and wheels and spend the day in this 188-acre
park, which features a fishing lake and four miles of mountain bike
trails. Open dusk to dawn April 1-November 1.

With more than 250 acres of trails, playgrounds, lakes, and golf

include a 9-hole golf course, an 18-hole disc golf course, two
stocked lakes for fishing, a swimming pool, a 1.25-mile walking
trail, volleyball and tennis courts, a clubhouse with meeting
room, shaded picnic areas, and an amphitheater.
Loch Mary Recreational ATV Park

With 10 miles of trails and more being added, this nearly
600-acre ATV and dirt bike park will challenge beginners and
enthusiasts alike. Passes required. One- or three-day passes
available; camping permits available only to those who purchase
ATV passes.
Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park

Surrounded by rolling hills, this 863-acre forest hideaway on
the edge of Hopkins County features regularly scheduled,
naturalist-led nature activities, as well as mountain biking,
horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, swimming, golf, tennis,
camping, and more.
Pennyrile Forest offers 8 pull-through campsites specifically
designed for horse owners. These sites feature electric, water
and sewer hook-ups. Each site has its own corresponding
hitching posts for up to four horses along with other amenities.
A 1.25 mile horse trail near the campground connects horseback
riders to the 40+ miles of horse trails on the adjacent Pennyrile
State forest.
Wildlife Management Areas
Clear Creek WMA

This WMA is primarily wetlands with some shoreline,
perfect for waterfowl hunting, fur trapping, fishing,
and bird watching on 858 acres located between
Kentucky 502 and 109. Hunting and fishing allowed
under state regulations. Primitive camping only and
boat access from Utley Road.
Jones-Keeney WMA

Located 5 miles west of Dawson Springs, this is the
oldest WMA in the state. The WMA is typified by very
rugged terrain, bluff overlooks, and some caves,
including a natural bridge feature.

Excellent birding, fishing, and hunting on 5,600 acres,
located just off Pennyrile-Breathitt Parkway exit 37
near Mortons Gap. Primitive camping only; horseback
riding allowed on maintained roads. Considered one
of the better areas for quail hunting in the state; also
good deer, turkey, waterfowl, and small game hunting
as well as excellent fishing and birding opportunities.
User permits ($15 per person) required to enter the
area for any type of use. Permits may be purchased
wherever Kentucky hunting and fishing licenses
are sold.
Tradewater River WMA

Hiking and birding trail along a meandering lowland
stream with associated steep wooded hills, typical of
the geology of this region. This 729 acres immediately
south of Dawson Springs on KY 109 at the HopkinsChristian county line is perfect for deer, turkey, and
squirrel hunting.

Tour the cabin where Kentucky’s 43rd governor -- the man who
initiated the state sales tax and made Harlan Sanders a Colonel
-- was born. Originally constructed in the mid-1800s, this
relocated and restored cabin is furnished with period pieces.
Historical Society Museum of Hopkins County

Housed in the former Hopkins County Library, the museum is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features an
original 1910 Buick Buggybout – one of only three left in the world!
Other memorabilia dates back to the early 1800s and showcases
the region’s coal industry, political history, lifestyles, and more.
Historic Downtown Hanson
This mecca for antique and art lovers was once a bustling hub of
commerce at the peak of the railroad era. Relish the charm of the
turn-of-the-century buildings that today house various shops,
galleries, and restaurants.
