Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie snagged an important endorsement on Sunday, winning the support of the influential New Hampshire Union Leader ahead of the nation’s first primary originating in the Granite State. The newspaper said Christie had “the range and type of experience the nation desperately needs.” At the same time, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton was back on the campaign trail on Sunday, pushing a plan to boost federal investment in infrastructure by $275 billion if elected. Clinton said she would dedicate herself to fixing the electric grid, roads, airports, bridges, and public transit over a period of five years. The last C-17 Globemaster III cargo jet built at the Boeing Long Beach plant lifted off and soared into history on Sunday, marking the end of an era ahead of the plant’s planned shutdown by the end of the year, a move, Boeing said, coming because there were not enough foreign orders to justify remaining open. The Southern California facility built more than 250 of the enormous jets, which each hold over 80 tons of cargo and this final one is headed to the Qatar Emiri Air Force sometime next year. The Commonwealth, which includes Canada and Australia, resource-hungry India, and widespread small islands vulnerable to rising sea levels, supported a mandate for developed nations to spend $100 billion by 2020 to help developing countries deal with the effects of climate change. On Monday, President Obama called the talks “an act of defiance” toward “attackers” who commit acts of extremist terror, announcing the two-week conference as a “turning point” when world leaders decided to “save the planet.” Obama pledged the U.S. would cut its carbon emissions by more than a quarter by 2030, a move over half the states of the U.S. have already sued to block. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Satur- day pushed for sanctions against Turkey following the downing of an invasive Russian warplane by Turkey last week, including a ban on specific goods and forbidding extensions of labor contracts for Turks working in Russia. Putin’s decree called for ending visa-free travel between Russia and Turkey and tightening controls over Turkish air carriers in Russia. Meanwhile, Israel’s defense minister said on Sunday a Russian jet penetrated Israeli airspace recently but was not shot down due to an “open communication system” between the two countries. Moshe Yaalon said the plane entered about a mile into Israeli airspace “by mistake” and immediately turned back toward Syria. At the same time, Russian warplanes killed at least 18 civilians and wounded dozens more on Sunday during strikes on a northern Syrian town held by ISIS insurgents. One report placed the attacks in a busy market in the town of Ariha, where 40 persons died, including four children. Storm Front Communications is owned and operated by the Woolard family and Rick Woolard is scheduled to manage the station and serve as an on-air personality. Storm Front President Sheila Woolard said the FCC granted approval of the sale on November 18 with closing set for Monday, November 30. The couple’s son Nick is also part of the management group. Rick Woolard said news talk would comprise the bulk of the station’s broadcast, with live local shows in the mornings and afternoons. “Our goal is to hyperserve Monroe County,” Woolard said, “providing information and weather coverage as well as national hosts who sound the local concerns of the area listener.” At present, WRKQ is rotating holiday music, holiday tidbits, recipes, and information about local events, plus a contest to win a replica Memphis Grizzlies jersey. “We are having an ugly sweater contest on our Facebook page,” Woolard said, suggesting listeners post a picture of their ugly sweater and get friends to vote on it, the contest running through December 21. WRKQ first went on the air in 1966 as WKYZ. It later held the call letters WZZI, remaining in the same block building off Old Englewood Road beneath its iconic tower for a half century. Page 12 - The BUZZ December 01, 2015 Monroe County Animal Shelter News If it is too cold outside for you, it is too cold for dogs and cats. Please keep your furry friends warm during the winter. Well, blue must be the “in color” for fall this year as we seem to have many Russian Blue mix cats coming in, and being adopted. Plus many other beautiful cats. Yvette, Silver, and Grayson would love for you to come meet and adopt them and any of their cat friends here at the shelter as soon as you can. After all, the adoption fee right now is only $40. Yvette came in to the shelter pregnant and that very night she delivered her litter of kittens. The very next morning, one of our favorite cat foster mom’s whisked her and her babies home. Yvette was a great mom and raised her babies well, and they have been adopted. Now, it’s her turn to find her forever home. She is an indoor cat, a young tabby, with a very charming and friendly purrsonality. She is also “dog friendly.” Silver is a Russian Blue mix about 1 year old that is very friendly and loves as much attention as you can give her. Grayson is a very handsome medium-hair Russian Blue mix, about 3 years old and a friendly fellow. He will require daily brushing, so his coat will remain beautiful and fluffy. Come on over and meet all of the wonderful cats that are just waiting for you! All animals adopted are spayed or neutered, have their first kitten or puppy shot or adult booster, rabies vaccination (if old enough), and microchipped (with registration) Cats are combo tested and dogs are heartworm tested (if old enough). Shelter Statistics for last week: 44 intakes; Shelter adoptions - 18; Reclaimed by owner – 1 It's that time of year again where vets see pets that have swallowed hooks, eaten live poisonous plants (holly, poinsettia, tinsel, or have cuts due to broken ornaments.
