Moment With MORGAN I was sitting here this week struggling with an idea to write about, and as I was watching the Republican debate last night a quote came out from one of the candidates that I thought rocked and needed to be restated here locally in Monroe County. “To have a strong nation, we need strong communities, and that only happens when we have strong families, and strong families come only when we have strong values.” That is such a strong true statement and more importantly needed to be said and repeated here in our community. The family unit has suffered a severe blow and is on the verge of extinction and a dysfunctional family has become the new normal for many reasons. The collapse of the family unit and the en- Saturday Special at... only 699 Enjoy our delicious Hamburger, served with french fries, and a drink! RESERvE OUR BACK ROOM FOR YOUR nEXT PARTY OR gET TOgETHER monday-Saturday 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. 4263 Hwy 411 N Madisonville trance of dysfunctional families has many reasons and factors, but include the dreaded D words, “Divorce” and “Drugs,” and then the cycle repeats over and over, and in fact it is not uncommon today to meet people who are on their fourth or fifth marriage and the kids must suffer the consequences. I know many children that are being raised by their grandparents and great grandparents because the parents are so selfish and think only of their own personal needs and throw their kids away like yesterday’s trash. I guess over the course of my generation I have seen a terrible change in the core American Christian values. America was founded on Christianity, but as this melting pot culture has evolved those values are being stripped away and replaced with a Preacher morgan mindset of who cares about God. Who cares what God says or wants, I want what I want. It really comes down to priorities. As I spoke to my son in North Carolina last night, he was facing a situation and had called me for advice, I walked him through life’s priorities, which help us make better decisions because when we are forced to place our priorities in order our values are regulated. As we talked, I asked him this question, what are your top three priorities? He stumbled and sputtered and said well I’m really not sure. So I changed tack and said okay, what should your top three be and he said God should be first, my wife second, and I’m not sure about the third. When we put God first as a priority, it changes everything, because our personal desires go out the window. My first priority is what does God want? That priority plays over into our values, because now it is God’s value as number one in my life and not my will. When we put our spouse second, it changes the divorce rate and your marriage will last even through the junk that life brings. I’ve not always put my wife second and many times I’ve put me first and thrown God to the curb, and it is in these moments that my life spirals out of control and I get me type results. Depending on the situation or family unit, the third priority changes at times, especially if you have kids. They should come third, but if you have no kids then maybe it is your job. The problem becomes if we don’t know our priority we can allow the job to become our first priority and it destroys our family unit. To me, it all comes down to this. I am preaching a series at OAA Worship that finishes up this Sunday on “How’s Your Joy?” If we can find out what brings us joy and how to have joy even in the middle or turmoil, our family unit will not suffer but actually thrive. It must start with a change in our priorities and values and then it will trickle into every part of us and we will experience true inner peace and joy, it will strengthen our family unit and bleed over to into our community and us a better local community. Come join us this Sunday at OAA Worship at 9:30 or 11a.m. and experience the Joy of Jesus. City Recorder Courtney Dalton Viar and City Attorney Tyler Weiss were also present at the meeting. The meeting kicked off with a reading of the minutes from the previous board meeting. This gathering was held on October 20, 2015. City Recorder Viar read these minutes before those gathered. Following the reading, Alderman Garren motioned to accept the minutes as read. Alderman Sparks seconded the motion, and it passed with all in favor. There were no committee reports to come before the board on Tuesday evening, so the Vonore Town Board immediately set its sights on departmental reports. The public works department was represented by Alderman Garren. He said one word described the department’s work during the past month: pavilion. He was speaking of the POW Pavilion in the Vonore Veterans Memorial Park. The public works department has spent a great deal of time on this project. Alderman Brown updated the board on the re- cent goings-on of the Vonore Fire Department. During the month of October 2015, the fire department responded to the following calls: 31 medical calls, five wrecks with injuries, four fire alarms, two public assists, one brush fire, one traffic control, one police assist, and one structure fire. In total, the Vonore Fire Department answered 46 calls. Alderman Sparks gave the report for the parks and recreation department. She echoed Alderman Garren’s earlier sentiment of one word describing the department’s work. Hers was “parks.” The parks and recreation department is making progress on these parks, reported Alderman Sparks. Heavy equipment has rolled into the future sites and has started work. She also announced the bids for fencing will be opened at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Alderman Sparks continued her report, saying it was exciting to see the progress being made at the baseball field and Veterans Memorial Park. She said it was good to see the POW Pavilion ready for use. The department and city are still under time constraints to complete the baseball field, but Alderman Sparks was confident they would see it finished. She expressed her appreciation for the public works crew for their assistance, and invited the audience to— when it was not muddy—to drop by the construction site and see what is going on. We are going to have a baseball field, she concluded. And it is going to be a good one. The Vonore Police Department was represented by Alderman Hammontree. He reported all is going well with the police department. The officers have been busy. However, the cooler weather and the time change have led to a drop in call volume. Alderman Hammontree also announced Officer Matt Watson had resigned in order to take another position. He publicly thanked Officer Watson for his service. Mayor Lovingood next reminded the board and audience of the Veterans Day Memorial Service, which would be held the following day at 2 p.m. It was set to take place at the POW Pavilion in the Vonore Veterans Memorial Park. He also announced he had received a request from a citizen, who asked for a street light to be set up where Niles Ferry Road and Highway 411 meet. An American drone had been tracking notorious butcher Mohamed Emwazi, waiting for a clear shot, and launched a hellfire missile as Emwazi got into a vehicle in the Syrian city of Raqqa. At the same time, Kurdish forces reclaimed the strategic northwest Iraq city of Sinjar from ISIS militants on Friday after advancing into its center from all angles backed by U.S.-led airstrikes. He provided explicit pictures and descriptions that included buckling shingles atop sections of roofing that swayed with dips and valleys, swags in plywood decking beneath shingles that covered rotting spots, “spongy” sections of wood weakened by moisture, uneven ridgelines brought on by water damage, unsuccessful attempts to spread tar over loose and lifting shingles, shingles shedding the protective sand coating, tabbing and drip edges curling and creating entrances for water, loosened nails, and even some shingles that had been ham- mered down, instead of screwed down, and other shingles that had been attached backwards. Architect Sam Moser, who had been brought in recently to help evaluate the problems uncovered by Carroll and his department, said Vonore Middle School appeared to have inadequate roof ventilation that was causing excessive heating and cooling and making the entire roof of the 2003built school to rise, buckle, and push the shingles from the plywood base. “Rule of thumb,” said Moser, “you need 100 square inches of ventilation for every 100 square feet of roofing, which appears to be a contributing problem at the school.” Madisonville Intermediate was constructed in Installing Most Major Brands Financing Available! Carroll’s photographs showed otherwise, depicting damaged shingles, decking, and widespread unevenness of large portions of the roof. Carroll used a slide show presentation and broke down the costs of repair, upgrading, and renovation of the three roofs. The outlay for Madisonville Primary was over $1.5 million. The total price was estimated at $3.8 million for all three schools. School board members appeared stunned at the revelation. “We need someone to oversee the installment of any new roofs if we decide to replace them,” said member Steve Rogers, “someone who knows what he’s doing.” Finance Director Libby Hicks said the county commission had “had nothing to do with this,” that instead the existing school boards at the time had approved plans, bids, and construction contractors. “With any job the size of building a school,” Hicks said, “it is to your benefit to have an outsider of the school system to provide ongoing inspections during the construc- tion stage.” “Well, even if the plans are good,” said Rogers, “the people who build these schools might not be capable of proper construction.” Hicks said the board needed to find out if there were any legal remedies for the damaged roofs but added that the two construction companies that won the bids and built the schools were out of business, naming Evans Construction and Webb and Sons. “If you remember,” said Carroll, “Madisonville Intermediate was originally designed to have steel trusses and beams. Wood replacements saved $280,000 at the time.” “And we had enough money to renovate the sixroom building behind Madisonville Primary,” said Lynn. Clinton’s margin over Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley was described as “striking” and two months ahead of voting she already had support from 15 percent of the delegates needed for the nomination. Meanwhile, CBS News said Clinton’s campaign had begun responding to questions about a story Clinton had been using regarding her attempt to join the Marines in 1975 but was turned away by recruiters, who kept her from serving her country in the military. Other sources, including the New York Times, have questioned the anecdote, saying Clinton was instead vehemently anti-war while working on the presidential campaigns of Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern. On Thursday, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump launched an attack on rival Ben Carson’s biographical claims at a rally in Iowa, echoing an earlier comparison between Carson’s so-called “pathological temper” and child molestation. After questioning the retired neurosurgeon’s story of how he nearly stabbed a friend during his adolescence, Trump bellowed, “How stupid are the people of Iowa? How stupid are the people of this country to believe this crap?” A federal judge ruled on Thursday that Baxter County in Arkansas had violated the U.S. Constitution by displaying a Nativity scene on the courthouse lawn, despite a disclaimer that said “Whatever your religion or beliefs, enjoy the holidays.” The complaint had been brought by Baxter County resident Dessa Blackthorn and the American Humanist Association. The Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a proposed rule on Thursday outlining a far-reaching ban on smoking in public housing that would cost over $200 million. The agency said the rule, which would extend the ban to areas up to 25 feet away from structures, could lead to eviction notices for poor and disabled smokers. After Illinois Lottery officials announced payouts over $600 would be delayed due to the state’s budget impasse, ticket sales were reported on Friday as slumping, dropping November 14, 2015 to the lowest point of the year. Sales declined $21 million, including instant games and Powerball, as frustration continued to mount at gas stations, convenience marts, grocery stores, and other ticket outlets. And according to Prevention magazine on Friday, the easiest way to avoid colds and flu this coming season is to stop doing all the things that land you stuffed up and under the covers with a snot nose. The things? Not washing your hands properly prior to handling foods or after shaking hands or caring for someone who’s sick.
