There are times when a hobby is more than
a hobby, and a pastime far greater than the simple name would suggest. These pursuits are
more than exceptional; they are meaningful,
and deeply personal. They are our dreams lived
out loud, the core of the fervor that burns deep
in our core, the drive that pushes us forward and
beyond into realms of possibility and opportunity. In a way, these hobbies are us, an extension
of our innermost thoughts and feelings.

Santa Says “Teach The Children”
Just a week before
Christmas I had a visitor.
This is how it happened.
I had just finished the
household chores for the
night and was preparing
to go to bed, when I heard
a noise in the front of the
house. I opened the door
to the front room and to
my surprise, Santa himself
stepped out next to the
fireplace.
"What are you doing?"
I started to ask. The
words choked up in my
throat and I saw he had
tears in his eyes. His usual
jolly manner was gone.
Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know.
He then answered me
with a simple statement...
"Teach The Children!"
I was puzzled. What did
he mean?
He anticipated my
question and with one
quick movement brought
forth a miniature toy bag
from behind the tree. As
I stood bewildered, Santa

Suddenly I heard a soft

A 23-year-old Monroe

early Thursday and
charged with attacking a
homeowner.
Arrested by Monroe
County Sheriff’s Deputy
Derrick Graves for aggravated assault and criminal
trespassing was James
Cameron Plemons of
Frontier Road, Sweetwater.
According to Graves,
Plemons and another man
got into a dispute and the
other man told Plemons
to leave his property. Plemons returned, however,
and tried to force his way
inside the man’s home.
Unsuccessful, Plemons
cut the phone line to the
house and disengaged the
main electrical breaker.
He then entered the
house through a window
and attacked the man.
Graves said he found a
damaged door, the severed phone line, and noted
the power was off in the
residence. The other man
had an injury to his face
and was transported to
the hospital for severe
chest pains.
Plemons said his jaw
was possibly broken but
he declined medical assistance, Graves said.

Bears Fight Back in Second half to Beat Soaring Eagles
Tulli Cole
The spectators gathered in the Tellico Plains
gymnasium were treated
to an exciting, nail-biting
show on December 20.
The Bears hosted a tenacious Eagles flock, one
that nearly flew up and
away with a W. But the
Bears fought back into
the game in a wild second
half, leading to a hard-won
victory for the boys of Tellico.
It was a closely
matched face-off in the
first quarter. The Bears
and Eagles exchanged
blow after blow, with neither side taking true control of the game. For every
bucket snagged by the
Bears, the Eagles answered with a basket of
their own. Preston Russell, Eric Croft, and
Robert Vandervort combined for 14 points overall,
but the Eagles were not
far behind with 11 points.
The Bears did not have
their lead for much longer.
The Eagles stole it away
early in the second quarter, storming ahead with 7
unanswered points. The
Bears struggled on the offensive end of the floor.
Nearly three minutes
passed before Russell
managed to put an end to
the drought with a pair of
points.
Unfortunately,
the
Bears’ troubles continued
during the remainder of
the quarter. Russell, Vandervort, Dalton Rhinehart, and Croft brought 8
more points to the board
for Tellico, but the Eagles
still outscored the Bears
by a small margin of 13-8.
The Berean defense also
forced a few turnovers out
of the Bears, further limiting their would-be offensive drives.
The score at halftime
was 31-24.
But a sleeping beast was
awakened, as the Bears
stirred from their temporary hibernation. They returned to form in the third
quarter, and, slowly but
surely, they fought their
way back into the game.
The Eagles were the
first to score in the third
quarter, but Vandervort responded with a quick
bucket of his own. Tyler
Peeler was not far behind
him; thanks to an assist by
Croft, he put away another
basket for Tellico. Croft
showcased some gamesavvy not long afterward,
walking up to the line to
mail home two freethrows.
Rhinehart
snagged a bucket in the
same breath, and Adam
Reece teamed up with
Russell for a duo of points.
Russell also grabbed a couple of foul-shots.
The third quarter
ended on a high note for
Tellico, too. The Bears
forced a turnover, which
turned into a threepointer by Justin Holcomb.
The wave of points
brought the Bears to
within striking distance of
the Eagles’ lead. The score
at the end of the third was
41-39.
That lead was finally
met and matched within
the opening possession of
the fourth. Vandervort
tied the game with a basket. Croft took the lead
back for the Bears with a
pair of foul-shots, and it
was a lead the Bears would
not relinquish.
Although the Eagles
had an impressive showing
of 17 points in the fourth,

the Bears were tenacious
and stood firm. Peeler
stole a ball and found Russell for a bucket. Both
Croft and Russell nailed a
three-pointer, and Rhinehart returned a rebound
for two points. Reece
forced an Eagle turnover,
leading directly to a scoring drive by Russell and
Vandervort. Vandervort
scored again on a later
possession.
In an attempt to slow
down the Bears, the Eagles began to foul, hoping
to force a 1 and 1 and a
chance at regaining possession. But the Bears did
well at the line, winning 5
of 7 attempts. The
points—courtesy of Croft
(1) and Russell (4)—gave
the Bears the cushion they
needed to withstand the
Eagles’ final push.
The final score was 5862.

Dalton Rhinehart (6),

The Lady Bears of Tellico Plains had a few

the guise of the Lady Eagles of Berean. The hometown squad defended their

they roared home victorious after four quarters of
dominant play.
The Lady Eagles drew

Lady Bears who flew in
the opening quarter. After
a quick bucket by Berean,
Tellico soared ahead in a
fast-paced 29-0 run. Sarah
McKinnon returned a rebound for a basket, and
Jasmine Harris followed
with a three-pointer. Storyie Miller found McKinnon down low for another

Hana
(Continued from pg 1)
The art of dancing is
exactly this for Hana
Henry. Whether it is taking part in a traditional
production, or putting in
hours upon hours of rehearsal in order to perfect
one move, one routine,
dancing is very much her
craft, her life’s passion.
“I always want dance to
be a part of my life,” said
the Madisonville native. “I
wouldn’t know what to do
if [it] wasn’t.”
Henry’s love for dancing—and, specifically, ballet—blossomed at an
incredibly early age. She
was only four years old
when she made her first
foray into that realm, by
enrolling in a dance-class
in her hometown.
In the beginning, learning dance was just a way to
spend time with some of
her friends, who were also
taking a few classes. In
fact, it was why the little
girl she was once was insisted on participating.
No one could have
imagined this tiny decision would pave the way to
something grander, and
maybe even something approaching destiny.
Those initial classes,
simple though they were,
opened the metaphorical
door to a bright, new
world. And that world
beckoned. Dance, and all
the wonders and possibilities it encompassed, enchanted the young Hana
Henry, and it soon seeped
deep, deep into her bones
and took root in her soul.
Henry, perhaps, put it
simply but best: “I fell in
love with it.”
And that was that.
So, when her friends
lost interest in dance and
moved on, as many children so often do when it
comes to the various hobbies they take part in,
Henry chose to stay. More
than that, she chose to improve, to shine.
Day by day, month by
month, and year by year,
she has devoted herself to
what she calls her “special
December 23, 2011
hobby” and her “sport”,
putting as effort into it as
any athlete or academic
scholar would his or her
individual craft. Even now,
as a student at Maryville
College, Henry continues
to hone her skills. By day
a young woman studying
to earn a B.S. in Biology,
by evening she is an apprentice of the art of ballet, thriving on the joy and
exhilaration it gives her
and her supporters.
And that hard work
and dedication have paid
off in spades throughout
her dancing career. Although young, Henry has
taken part in many productions throughout her
dancing career. As a member of the Armfield Dance
Academy in Athens, Tennessee, she has starred in
such classics as Snow
White, Cinderella, Alice
in Wonderland, the Wizard of Oz, and the Little
Mermaid. Even more impressive, perhaps, is that
these productions are but
a small sampling of the
numerous recitals the
academy has put on in the
past, and all for the enjoyment of local children.
Henry’s
“special
hobby” has even taken her
across vast oceans and into
foreign lands. As recently
as 2006, she and her
troupe journeyed to the
beautiful country of
Greece. While there, they
enjoyed not only the local
culture and historical landmarks, but also entertained
crowds
of
spectators with three
amazing shows. The experience was an incredibly
memorable one, especially
for Henry. She almost
wished she did not have to
come back home!
But it was a good thing
she did return, or else audiences in Tennessee
would have missed out on
one of her most impressive roles to date.
This Christmas season,
Henry joined the talented
cast of the Appalachian
Ballet Company as they
performed a holiday classic: The Nutcracker.
And just what is the
ABC?
The Appalachian Ballet
Company is the resident
dance company of the
Clayton Center for the
Arts, as well as East Tennessee’s premier classical
performing
company.
Based at the Van Metre
School of Dance in
Maryville, Tennessee, the
ABC (as is it affectionately
called) performs an annual
three-program season,
providing the region with
high-quality
performances.*
And one of these performances just so happens
to be the always magical,
always wonderful Nutcracker ballet.
The 2011 Appalachian
Ballet Company performance is not Henry’s first
brush
with
the
Tchaikovsky fan-favorite.
The Nutcracker is very
much a tradition amongst
ballet companies and
dance studios. Henry’s
original studio was but
one of many that put on
the production during the
Christmas season. From
the age of ten until her
sophomore year in high
school, she took part in
the popular ballet.
But while The Nutcracker is a traditional ballet, it is a rather
demanding endeavor to
undertake. Henry’s original studio simply became
too small to put on such a
huge production, and it
was eventually dropped as
a viable option.
It was not until Henry
traveled from the realm of
high school into the wide,
wide world of college that
she was reintroduced to
the imaginative story of a
young girl, a prince, and a
ferocious mouse-king.
While
attending
Maryville College, Henry
took dance classes at the
Van Metre School of
Dance. This studio, unlike
her original studio, was
more than big enough to
put on The Nutcracker. In
fact, as the base of operations for the Appalachian
Ballet Company, The
Nutcracker is but one of
many, many high-end performances overseen by

Henry did not hesitate.
She instead took a leap of
faith and, relying on her
talent and gumption, auditioned for the company
just this August. She came
out a winner, too: Henry
made the studio’s senior
company. Doing so allowed her to, once again,
dance in one of the most
famous of ballets in the
world.
What followed were
weeks of time-consuming
rehearsals and hardcore
practice sessions, coupled
with, in Henry’s case, a
harsh week of finals and
the usual demands of college-life.
It was the epitome of
hard work, but the end result was more than worth
the effort.
For two weekends, one
in Knoxville at the
Knoxville Civic Auditorium, and one in Maryville
at the Clayton Center for
the Arts, Henry and her
fellow cast-mates danced
and acted to music played
by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Led by
Ms. Amy Moore, whom
Henry called “a very, very
good teacher,” the com-
Page 15- The BUZZ
pany captivated audiences
both young and old,
breathing life and adventure into a well-loved, traditional tale of magic and
daring-do.
Henry showcased her
talents in both of the ballet’s Acts. She not only
marched across the stage
as a Toy-Soldier, but also
fluttered and spun as a
Snowflake, and joined the
Arabian Dancers as a
member of their spirited
choir.
All in all, joining the
Appalachian Ballet Company’s production was an
amazing, if oftentimes
stressful, experience for
Henry. One can hope it
will be a stepping stone
into the future, and will
spell still more opportunities for the gifted young
dancer from Monroe
County.
However, for Henry,
dancing is about more
than blazing new frontiers
or landing a starring role.
Rather, it is about her audiences, big and small,
young and old, in Tennessee or in Greece, and it
always has been and always will be. She finds as
much joy in sharing her
passion for dance and ballet with others as she does
taking part in the craft
herself.
“I’m not the best
dancer,” said Henry
humbly. “But bringing art
to others… making [the
audience] happy…it is
worth it.”
And for all those other
would-be, hopeful dancers
out there? Henry encourages them to take courage
and follow their dreams.
Hard work and some difficulties are to be expected, when it comes to
that choice, but in the
long run, doing so will lead
to a most rewarding and
fulfilling adventure for all
who believe.
