Music
(Continued from pg 1)
A bombastic chord or
two from a film score can
punctuate the excitement
or grandeur playing out on
a screen, breathing life
into fantasy.
Haunting
melodies
linger (and as their shepherds, can raise goosebumps too) long after they
have been strung.
A stirring love song may
well have the strength to
heighten a moment between two souls connecting for the first time…
maybe even bring that
zing moment about in the
first place.
And music—the sound
of it, the creation of it—
can perhaps also bring
healing to the brokenhearted, joy to the dispirited and lonely.
This is certainly the
hope of musician and soldier Eddie Ridenour. The
founder of Music for the
Fight, he offers free guitar
lessons to other veterans.
The goal behind this
emerging non-profit organization is to prevent
suicides amongst servicemen and servicewomen.
“One more is too
many,” said Ridenour.
Ridenour’s
journey
with Music for the Fight is
deeply tied with his own
musical roots, and those
delve all the way back into
a yesteryear of 1991. In
those days, he was a shy,
rather
introverted
teenager. Hardly the most
outgoing or daring of
young men, he was not
someone you would expect to cross a street in
order to investigate unknown gatherings of utter
strangers.
June 30, 2014
And yet one day, he
(against his very nature,
Ridenour admitted) did
just that…
It all began rather simply. For quite some time,
Ridenour had noticed a
pack of nameless vehicles.
They crowded into the
parking lot of the Church
of the Nazarene across
from his house. Even
more mysterious, these
get-togethers happened
only on certain days and
seemingly odd times.
His imagination and
curiosity were pricked.
What was happening at
the church? Who were
these people? These questions ran amuck in his
mind. He had to unravel
the answers, claim the
truth! And despite his shy
ways, the then sixteenyear-old could not stop
himself from what he at
last set out to do.
Ridenour smiled. “I
walked across the street to
see what was going on.”
As it turned out, there
might well have been a
dash of destiny involved in
this unusual decision. For
these not-so clandestine
meetings proved to be a
group of men practicing
and playing music. And
wonder of wonders… Ridenour found himself
falling in love with this
bright, beautiful world he
had just discovered. He
wanted to take up residence there even!
He had a little help
along the way, of course.
“Someone who was
pretty much a stranger
handed me a guitar,” he
explained, when his budding interest was not only
noted but acknowledged.
This same man, one Mr.
Carlos Tilley, soon taught
Ridenour a few chords for
his new instrument.
Ridenour devoured this
knowledge and then some,
throwing himself headlong into the path of taking up the mantle of a
musician. For all those
notes, stringed instruments,
lyrics,
and
melodies did more than
give him a beloved pastime—they changed his
life.
“Music helped me to
overcome my shy, introverted nature,” said Ridenour. It gave him
much-needed confidence,
too, he added, as well as
important communication skills.
It also happened to direct his starry course from
then on out.
And on that note, we
must now flash forward to
the year 2014, and a mere
two months ago. Ridenour found himself reading an article in the New
York Times, highlighting
the high suicide rate
amongst those who serve
or have served in the military. During the first part
of the year alone, there
had been 1,892 suicides.
It was a sobering, disquieting finding. It troubled Ridenour deeply. But
it also moved him to action, much as that first
silent, insistent summons
had drawn him towards a
church many years before.
“I knew what to do
right away,” said Ridenour.
“Music’s been great for
me. I said, ‘If anyone is interested, I’ll give free
music lessons.’”
The idea made perfect
sense to Ridenour. Not
only had music broken
him out of his shell as a
teenager, it had also served
him well during his deployment to Afghanistan.
“I had my instruments
with me,” he explained.
He played them most
every day in that country
many waters and cultures
away from home, and they
proved to be just the
soothing balm he needed.
“[Music] brought me joy,
brought me home for a
bit.”
He was not alone in
this sentiment. Ridenour
believed the music helped
his entire unit as well. His
first sergeant even told Ridenour he might well
command him to sit beside this officer’s bed, and
play long into the resting
hours.
It was perhaps just a
good-natured joke. Ridenour certainly believed it
was. But the jest does not
change the fact that
music, calming and empowering and joyful, drew
it out of the first sergeant
in the first place. And
when Ridenour and the
officer returned to the
states, the same man
asked him to give lessons
to his wife and daughter.
Music had been there

for Ridenour when he
most needed it, time and
again. Why not hurting
veterans?
“My hope is they [servicemen and servicewomen] will find joy in
music,” said Ridenour. He
later added, “They all experience high stress fulfilling their duties while in
the military […] Not all
combat wounds are seen.”
Ridenour wished to alleviate some of the pain of
these wounds. Above all,
he wanted to help prevent
more suicides from occurring. So he wasted little
time in crafting an organization to implement his
musical idea. He began
speaking with like-minded
people and veterans alike.
He sent emails, sought out
sponsors, tracked down
instruments and places to
play.
His efforts have yielded
a bumper crop of results.
What had once been the
spark of a thought has
blossomed and grown.
Music for the Fight is now
in full swing and gaining
momentum. Ridenour

humble and pleased Ridenour.
In fact, the state of Tennessee recently filed the
organization’s charter. All
that remains to do now is
file with the IRS, and
Music for the Fight will
become a bona-fide nonprofit.
Until that moment arrives, the organization
continues to (appropriately enough, given its
name) put up the good
fight. Classes are held at

“It’s like a workshop,”
said Ridenour. “Very laid
back.”
Ridenour makes use of
a simple dry erase board to
teach notes and chords.
He also fields questions
from his students, demonstrates the ins and outs of
a melody, and even leads
them down the road of
musical theory.
And, of course, he
guides them towards picking up their first song.
“That [learning and
then playing the song] is
very rewarding,” he said.
Especially, he chuckled,
when too much musical
theory threatens to become a boring beast.
It is not only the students who are benefiting
from this learning experience. Ridenour is taking it
all in as well. Not as a
greenhorn musician learning the ropes this time
around, however, but as a
teacher.
“I’m learning as I go,
actually,” he said, smiling.

NATIONWIDE
A White House review
released on Friday reported the troubled Veterans Affairs health care
system was plagued by a
“corrosive culture” of mismanagement and distrust
that has had significant
negative impacts on medical treatments for veterans.
The
study
determined the environment with the Veterans
Health Administration
damaged morale and affected health care, concluding the division of the
department must be disassembled and restructured
from top to bottom.
New NASA satellite
images released on Friday
showed in vivid colorcoded maps that levels of
nitrogen dioxide, one primary air pollutant, had
plummeted across the
United States over the
past decade. The data
came from a NASA satellite called Aura, which
launched in 2004 to measure pollutants; nitrogen
dioxide is generated by
gasoline-burning vehicles
and coal-fueled power
plants.
In the world of rhythm
and blues music, Bobby
Womack, singer-songwriter who influenced the
Rolling Stones among others, died at age 70 on Friday, but details of his death
were
not
revealed.
Womac’s death was not
unexpected; he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s
disease in 2012.
The University of California Davis said on Saturday there was “an
unprecedented decline in
the number of California’s
“tricolored blackbird” during the past decade, resulting in what was once a
frequent cry of newborns
in the Sacramento Valley,
but rarely now. Once
numbering in the millions
in 2008, the agency said
there were now only
145,000 0f the birds, a severe decline due to the
widespread use of poisons
used to kill of the very in-
sects the birds feast on.
High fives, California
farmers.
And the Seattle-based
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society announced on
Friday it had begun a campaign to shut down the
buying and selling fish for
aquariums, saying the
practice was destroying
coral reefs from Hawaii to
the Philippines. Activists
said that “in this day and
age,” where the oceans
face a crisis every day,
there is “no justification of
a fishery for hobby,” that it
was not appropriate ever
to remove fish from their
reef habitats for people to
look at and enjoy in a small
tank.

Ridenour has also just
accepted a full scholarship
to an acoustic music camp
at Lincoln Memorial. He
is looking forward to the
wisdom he might glean
from this event. As he
pointed out, “It will be
great. It’ll help me become
a better teacher.”
The classes at Rick’s
Music only kicked off only
June 30, 2014
a month ago, but Ridenour already harbors big
plans for the future. The
offered spaces from local
businesses are paving the
way to more and more opportunities to teach. He
hopes to get in contact
with folks in Cleveland
and Chattanooga, too.
Covering East Tennessee is only the start. Ridenour believes in the
possibility of franchising
out, too. And should he
ever get a hold of the extra
instruments, Ridenour is
more than willing to teach
the mandolin, bass, the
ukulele, and beginning
piano to interested students. He would also enjoy
speaking to area churches
and at civic club meetings.
The skies are simply
endless!
And this is where you,
the fair reader, come in.
You can help lead this important charge, and proclaim alongside Ridenour
and Music for the Fight:
“No more suicides!”
The organization is
currently searching for
sponsors. Ridenour also
hopes to have volunteer
music teachers join the
ranks. Music for the Fight
needs instruments, strings,
and accessories for the
classes as well. And since a
great deal of traveling is involved, fuel cards are also
greatly appreciated.
Any donation or show
of support is appreciated,
truthfully.
Support does not have
to be monetary or of musically-inclined breed, either. It can also be some as
simple as a kind word or a
gesture of camaraderie.
Ridenour also asks that
the public show patience
and understanding towards veterans.
“Let them know you
love, care, and appreciate
them,” he said.
Ridenour also encouraged his fellow veterans
not to be afraid to ask for
help. It is not a show of
weakness, he insisted. Besides music lessons, Ridenour noted he can also
refer veterans to the
proper professionals if
such is needed.
This musical soldier
turned teacher is not
alone. Already, several
men and women have
boldly taken up the battle
cry Ridenour first raised.
Chad Dawson of Sweetwater, Louise Barnes of
Valley Insurance, Wright
Hardware’s Debbie Exum,
Kim Olen with Big Hair
Marketing, Lucas Garner,
and the businesses who
have opened their doors
and hearts to this organization… These are just a
few of the many who have
directly aided Ridenour
and Music for the Fight,
and so helped the young,
upcoming
non-profit
prosper.
“I don’t know what I’d
do without all the support,” he said gratefully.
“This would still be an idea
without them. But because of them, it’s turned
into a non-profit.”
And it is because of this
non-profit that those who
have selflessly given so, so
much can be given something in return: the joyful
power of music.
“It’s good that our service men and women can
get started with music,”
said Ridenour.
“It means so much to
me. I think most people at
least like to listen to music.
Music is good.”
Play on, maestro, play
on.

(Continued from pg 1)
cle and with being a fugitive was Marcus Edward
Ripley, 42, of Englewood
Road, Madisonville.
Dockery said Ripley
took a 2002 Hyundai
Santa Fe without the
owner’s
permission
around 1 p.m. on Wednesday. On Thursday, Dockery spoke with Ripley by
phone and learned he was
in Tellico Plains.
Given a chance to return the vehicle and meet
with Dockery, Ripley
failed to show later in the
day.
On Friday, Ripley was
arrested, Dockery said.
During a national warrant search, Dockery discovered Ripley was
wanted in Florida, where
officials told him full extradition was available.

requested on Friday an additional 1,400 of the armaments to restock its

remaining on an expedited

A savage monsoon that
struck India Thursday
night killed 11 persons and
marooned thousands of
others in the country’s remote northwest, prompting authorities to rush
food and drinking water to
the area on Saturday. Residents were reported a
wading through mud and
knee-deep water in the
state of Assam after nearly
2.3 inches of pounding
rain.
Pope Francis returned
to the public eye on Saturday, following what Vatican officials said was an
“unexpected indisposition,” though insiders said
the pontiff had scaled
back activities due to illness or fatigue. The 77year-old, who has only one
lung, a bad back, and was
plagued by an intestinal
problem days ago, skipped
or shortened three events
this month.

And according to research by the University of
Gothenburg in Sweden on
Saturday, kids who follow
the Mediterranean diet
were less likely to become
overweight or obese than
children who eat otherwise, in fact, the study
found the Med diet eaters
were 15 percent more apt
to be slimmer and trimmer than the consumers
of fast foods and the “allAmerican diet.” Scoring
the highest on the fare of
vegetables, fruit, nuts, fish,
and whole cereal grains
were the Swedish young;
less likely, surprisingly,
were little ones from
Cyprus, a Mediterranean
island.
