While we have so much to be thankful for, we must also be aware of and support those less fortunate while they face their challenges. Heritage Credit Union and HG Insurance thank you for your support and loyalty this past year. With your continued support we look ahead to continued growth and success in 2014. Wishing you and your loved ones happiness and good health throughout the season! Board of Directors, Management & Staff WE’VE COME A LONG WAY! On November 24, 1948 Castlegar Savings Credit Union was incorporated under the B.C. Credit Unions Act. The first organizational meeting in Castlegar took place at Ivy Hill’s home. Assets were $45.00 in share capital and $9.00 in initiation fees. The average weekly wage in B.C at the time was $42.47. HCU in The Community We have grown a lot since then; a merger in 1973 saw the Slocan Valley Credit Union become our Slocan Park Branch, in 2004 we opened the West Boundary Branch and in 2006 our name changed to Heritage Credit Union. Our focus on community involvement and serving our members has not wavered over the 65 years since we first opened our doors. On November 23rd we celebrated our 65th year in our 3 branches, providing refreshments and prize draws for our existing and new members. The following members won the draws held every 65 minutes at each location: Castlegar: Robert Harshenin; Fred Houghton; Sherry Molnar; Andrea Stewart Slocan Park: Appledale Chldren’s Center; Barb Wilkinson; Marcy Perepolkin; Diane Still West Boundary: Arlene Randle; Kyla Cox; Nora McNeil; John Coburn Grand prize draws for new memberships will be made in early January. Arlene Randle – one of the lucky winners at the West Boundary Branch Since arriving in the Valley our Slocan Valley Branch Manager, Wilf Rimmer has been involved in several community organizations and is serving his second term as the President of the Kootenay-Slocan Lions Club. Wilf strongly believes in giving back to the community and is excited about the Lion’s latest project at the local food bank. Due to their membership in Food Banks BC, W.E. Graham Community Services Society who runs the local food bank has the opportunity from time to time to receive pallet load donations of food and materials through a National Food Sharing System. What was needed was a warm place to store the food and materials. The food bank approached the Lions earlier this year to insulate and drywall an old “Bus Shed” that was attached to their building. Like all renovation projects, this took an unexpected twist when it was found the wood foundations to the Bus Shed were rotted out. The Lions are now in the process of replacing the footings, columns and beams to meet building codes and the project will be ongoing over the winter months. Heritage Credit Union recognizes the need to build community capacity to respond to unexpected disasters. This summer we experienced this year many of our Slocan Valley members lost their crops due to the Lemon Creek Fuel Spill. We are pleased to announce Heritage Credit Union will be supporting our community and staff volunteerism by donating $2,500.00 to the food bank renovation project.
