Summer
Experiences
Step Into Fall
By Alyssa Crane
It’s here again! Yes, the greatest
season of all is quickly approaching—Fall. As the trees
turn to vibrant shades of yellow,
red, and orange, there is a turn
in the fashion world as well.
Time to pack up the flip-flops
and gladiators, and bring out the
boots and pumps! Fall footwear introduces more extravagant shoes than summer, and
transitions us into the heavier
footwear of winter. There are
5 major trends that have been
seen on the runway this season
that you will want to be sure to
partake in.
These Boots Are Gonna Walk
All Over You: They were big
last year, and they are big again
this year. Fur is in right now,
and that doesn’t exclude shoes.
Boots with fur have been seen
tromping up and down the
runways of Chanel, quite a bit.
Boots that lace up are also a
must have. Thigh-high boots
made an appearance last year
and they are steadily increas-
ing in popularity throughout this
season.
Booties, Booties, Booties,
Booties Rockin’ Everywhere:
Yes, those adorable ankle-high
boot wanna-be’s are everywhere. From peep toes, lace,
and satin to chunky, suede and
buckles, these ever-popular
shoes are taking over! They are
the perfect transition into winter
with their half boot half pump
appeal, and the variety of frilly
to military they have to offer will
never leave you saying, “I don’t
have any shoes that will match!”
A lovely Lady Gentleman:
Mimicking the very “in” menswear for women on the runways are the Oxford style shoe.
Although these have been
around for a while now, they are
much more masculine looking
this season with just a touch of
femininity. While some come in
towering high heels, others are
mostly for comfort and style.
Here Kitty, Kitty: Kitten heel
pumps have made a comeback!
Think retro circa 50’s and 60’s.
These precious pumps have
major style and simultaneously
give your feet a little rest. Try
some in the biggest print of the
season—leopard, or some that
are embellished, or even the
peep toe cuties.
Floating on Clog 9: Clogs are
everywhere this season; they
even made their way into the
boot department. Clog bottom
boots and shoes are here to
stay for fall whether you’re a fan
or not. They have many different styles to choose from that
even the most anti-clogger may
find one to love too.

No More American
Apparel?
By Alex Cash
Recently, my delicate world
was rocked by the shattering
news that our beloved maker of
all-American T-shirts and hoodies, American Apparel, would
be closing its doors. How could
such an amazing company apparently be going bankrupt? I
was skeptical of this news, so
I investigated and have found
this: yes, American Apparel is
in grave danger of defaulting at
the end of this month on their
$75 million loan with Bank of
America. Kind of a big deal, but
no worries, there is a firm coming in to “restructure” their failing
corporate structure. Apparently,
the Chief Executive Dov Charney, while quite the creative
genius, is a complete entrepreneurial klutz who has been
mismanaging his funds and staff
with deft precision.
While this isn’t the most
reassuring news about a company believed to be failing,
don’t fret just yet. The firm that
has been hired by the major
shareholders of the company
to come in and clean up, seem
to have their managerial heads
on straight. Hopefully this financial restructuring will be the
medicine this ailing company
needs. We can all rest assured
that there will still be a company
out there where you can order
androgynous oversized T’s and
neon leggings. So stay tuned
and thank your lucky American
Apparel tube socks, that it looks
like there will be a light at the
end of the tunnel for this company.

1. What’s the craziest thing that’s
happened to you so far in the major?
Probably having to find a replacement model
the day of the fashion show.
2. What are you looking forward to
most this year?
The fashion obviously, but also learning how
to make your own patterns.
3. Matthews aside, where is your
favorite place to be?
The Engineering Mall
4. If you had to eat one food for the
rest of your life, what would you
pick?
Watermelon!
5. Who do you model yourself after?
(Your role model, your inspiration
for fashion, etc.)
I like to pull inspiration from really classic
designers such as Coco Chanel and Yves
Saint Laurent, with their classic, tailored, and
simplistic designs, but I also feel inspiration
from more trendy and bold designers like
Marc Jacobs and Missoni.

Student Spotlights
1. What is your inspiration for your upcoming senior collection for this year’s fashion show?
The inspiration for my upcoming senior collection is a mix of the turbulent Russian Revolution circa
1917, and the opulent Scottish Kings in traditional Highland Dress. My collection is a fall/winter line
designed to function from day to night and enhance the inner beauty and unique personality for a
creative, social female individual.
2. When did you know you wanted to be in
apparel design?
I knew I wanted to be in apparel design when
visited the Field Museum in Chicago when I was 16. My
mom booked our family tickets to an exhibit on Jackie
Onassis and her style. I really found her intricately beaded
gowns and classic Chanel suits fascinating. And of course
the pillbox hats. Reading about Givenchy, Chanel, and the
other designers who found her a muse, made me realize
this is what I wanted to do for a living.
I
3. What is your favorite thing to do on campus?
My favorite thing to do on campus is go to The Den. I love
the good vibes, and the walks there and back are always a
good time to relax. I ALWAYS get Code Red, and I sometimes go more than once a day. A sewing lab visit is always
better with a den pop to keep you motivated.
4. What is your best memory at Purdue?
My best memory at Purdue is really hard for me to answer because there have been way too many
good ones. Probably my most recent best memories are hanging out at Chumleys with the gang and
finishing the coveted passport there. Although, I don’t think this is my parents’ best memory haha.
5. What is your best memory of the fashion show, in your purdue career?
My best memory of the fashion show is from Freshman year. I knew only a small amount of the people in the major, and although not everyone was excited about being a dresser, I was stoked. I really
got to know everyone that day and we had so much fun obsessing over the seniors’ collections. Later
that night we began the traditional after show party at Theta Tau, with Maddie and the gang,

Your
Resort 2011
By Emily Bach
It’s never too early in fashion.
The rest of the world may be
living life day by day, but in the
fashion industry there is no such
thing as that. With summer just
ending, the spring and Resort
2011 lines already made their
way down the runway.
We see Gucci staying true to
their more neutral tones, hints of
army greens, and bits of “bling.”
Each look with
perfect touches
of femininity, but never
overbearing,
with their iconic
printed silks,
while adding in
an edgy mix of
military and urban chic inspired jackets, jumpsuits, blouses and sleek dresses. And if that wasn’t enough,
sneaking in the Gucci’s infamous sexy pumps with heels
that seem to go on forever. But
overall, as Gucci always does,
they stay true to their classic
traditions without jeopardizing
style, but yet enhancing each
style with a modern twist.
Going from the Gucci to
Oscar, we take a bit of a turn.
Oscar de la Renta is the master
of elegance. He knows how to
make a woman feel sophisticated and radiant. We see Oscar
taking off with absolutely gorgeous textured prints, and wonderful details.
There are
silhouettes
from sheath
to corsets to
dresses with
free flowing
skirts and
fitted bodices
with a beautiful belt to tie it all together. Oscar plays around with the figure,
from the sexy, tight corsetry
to the beautiful style lines that
move across the body. Oscar is
classic, beautiful, and flawless.
As we take a look at Marc Jacobs’s lineup,
he stays with
a pastel palette with lots
of tweed and
feminine cutesy
touches of
polka dots and
frill. He incorporates whimsical
details, such as cap sleeves,
scalloped edges, and embroidered lace flowers. Marc never
ceases to amazing us with his
overly unique styles, that always
challenge the world of fashion to
think outside the box.
Overall, these are just a few
designers who have definitely
made their mark on the fashion
industry each season.
Fashion Week Color Wrap-up
By Brittany Berryman
Lincoln Center’s fashion week
has just wrapped up, and many
designers revealed their Spring/
Summer 2011 Collections. For
this upcoming season expect to
see colors of coral, white, and
an array of grays. These fresh
colors where shown in many
of the designers’ collections.
Designers such as Jason Wu,
BCBG’s Max Azria, and Nanette
Lepore displayed the color of
coral throughout their line; making coral the color of the season. White and grey, already a
fashion wardrobe’s staple colors, also appeared in many of
the collections. One fashion
standout from Lincoln Center
was a coral and white flowing gradient dress created by
designer Rena Lange. These
colors have never looked better together and will easily fit
into your already made fashion
wardrobe. Be sure to check
out all of the designer’s Spring/
Summer 2011 collections, on

Studying Abroad
By Sally Burns
The students at Purdue University have several opportunities available to them that they
should take advantage of during
their time in school. Studying
abroad is one of the most influential events in which students
can participate. Purdue students have the opportunity to
see the world and gain firsthand
experience in other cultures as
they take courses abroad and
receive credit for them back at
Purdue.
There are over 200 study
abroad programs offered by
Purdue University. The faculty
and staff in the study abroad office work with you to ensure that
your courses abroad help you
fulfill the course requirements
needed for your major. If finances are a concern, they can
direct you with the steps you
need to take to receive a scholarship or financial aid. Studying
abroad can be affordable and
is guaranteed to be one of the
most positive experiences of
your college career.
I participated in a study
abroad program called Semester at Sea during the spring
2010 semester. About 580
other students from the USA
and I sailed around the world,
stopping at several different
countries. The ship left from
Ensenada, Mexico and headed
west to Hawaii. We then sailed
to Japan, China, Hong Kong,
Vietnam, India, Mauritius, South
Africa, Ghana, Brazil, and returned back to the United States
by docking in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida. While the ship was at
sea, we attended class at our
on-board campus. While in each
country, we had the opportunity
to either travel independently or
with a trip put together by Semester at Sea.
For more information about the
different opportunities you have
available to you through Purdue’s Study Abroad programs,

Z Spoke by Zac Posen
By Brittany Berryman
Fashion designer Zac Posen has introduced
his new junior line called Z Spoke in its
runway debut this past fashion week at
Lincoln Center. Zac Posen’s Z Spoke is a
new collection filled with color and multiprints that takes youth designer fashion to a
fresh level. Many of Posen’s own design aesthetics were evident in his junior line collection featuring high collars, flouncy skirts,
ruffles, and many different lingerie elements.
Zspoke is currently being sold at high-end
department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue. This lower priced line helps round out
Posen’s brand, creating a new version of his
already crowd-pleasing innovative designs.

Hi, Can I Take Your Picture?
By Erika Adamonis
This summer I got the
opportunity to write for College
Fashionista, a blog written by
college students about college
fashion. Amy Levin, the founder,
graduated from IU and realized
that there was no real outlet for
20-somethings to show off their
street style. Now at the ripe old
age of 24 she runs the CollegeFashionista site that works with
over 70 schools, some outside
of the US. I got in touch with
Amy through email in May and
sooner than I thought I was on
the team and writing my article
every Wednesday! Since I was
working in downtown Chicago,
finding Fashionistas to photograph was a breeze. The tough
part came when I had to get the
nerve to ask my first random
encounter if I could photograph
her. I was walking to the L after
work one afternoon and saw
the most adorable girl in a little
white tutu and a funky tank,
and I realized I just had to stop
her and get a picture. I creepily
walked faster to catch up with
her before stopping to introduce
myself. “Hi, I’m Erika and I work
for the street style blog College
Fashionista. I absolutely love
your outfit, would you mind if
I take a picture?” Phew, it felt
good to get that done for the
first time! She ended up working across the street from me
and we saw each other a few
more times walking to and from
work throughout the summer. I
never thought that stopping to
talk to random girls would be so
outside my comfort zone, but
writing for CollegeFashionista
ended up being an amazing
experience and I will definitely
do it again when I get the time!
