THANK YOU
A Journey of Faith
You will see hundreds of names in this 25th
anniversary issue of VASJ Magazine. But, truth be
told, the names contained here don’t even begin to
tell the whole story of the people who have made our
school what it is.
We begin, then, with a comprehensive thanks to
the tens of thousands of graduates, students, teachers,
staff, parents, friends and supporters who have been
with us – standing with us and
sometimes carrying us – on this
remarkable journey of faith.
There is no need to recount
the challenges we have faced
together along the way. No doubt
we could recite them in unison.
But we also could cheer together
about the little victories and
the big ones that brought us to
this spectacular moment in our
history. It is a history that began
long before the merger of Villa
Angela Academy and St. Joseph
High School.
It truly began when the
Ursuline Sisters traveled from
France to found VA on the Lake
Erie shore. The spirit of our
school soared again when the Marianists founded St.
Joe’s just a couple of miles away. And 25 years ago,
when these two venerable schools came together in a
partnership established and blessed by the Diocese of
Cleveland, the path to success continued.
This anniversary issue celebrates that success. We
have included our most recent Donor Recognition
Report as a means to acknowledge the vital
importance of the financial support we have received
over the years in order to continue the dream of
Catholic education steeped in the core values of the
Ursulines and the Marianists.
Our cover story speaks to those values and how
they play out in the lives of today’s students. We
are deeply grateful to the writer, Mike Tobin ’91, a
member of VASJ’s first graduating class, who served
as co-editor of this issue.
We salute the members of our Board of Advisors,
led by Chairman Don Dailey ’70, and the entire
administrative leadership team. And certainly we
profoundly thank Bishop Richard G. Lennon,
Superintendent Margaret Lyons (VASJ’s first
principal), Associate Superintendent Eugene Boyer,
Ursuline President Sister Susan Durkin, Marianist
Provinical Father Martin Solma (graduate from the
Class of 1966), and all of the Ursulines, Marianists
and other teachers and staff members who have
served at our school.
Thanks to all of you, we can look forward to
VASJ’s service to our community for generations to
come. God bless you.

COVER STORY
Silver Anniversary
VASJ: It’s a family thing
By Mike Tobin ’91
T
his year marks the 25th anniversary of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School and its crucial role as
a pillar in the lives of its students, its neighborhood and the broader community.
It was the summer of 1990 when the former Villa Angela Academy and St. Joseph High School
came together to form a new school at the corner of East 185th Street and Lakeshore Boulevard. The
merger was the result of financial pressures but also was designed to better prepare students for a
changing world, an increasingly diverse and fast-changing one in which technology would change the
way students learn and live.
In the following two-and-a-half decades, VASJ would prove its value time and again as a place
where students receive a top-notch education rooted in the traditions and teachings of its Marianist and
Ursuline founders, where Catholic morality and character formation are taught alongside Shakespeare
and physics. After some turbulent years, VASJ’s enrollment is growing and the school is leading a
rebirth of its surrounding community.
“When we started, they gave us three to five years,” said Sr. Maria Berlec ’67. “Here we are 25 years
later, a thriving, forward-looking school. It’s a school to believe in.”

Sr. Maria would know. She taught math at VASJ when it
opened and later served as principal from 1992-98 before
serving as president and principal at St. Peter Chanel High
School. She returned last year to teach math and now teaches
religion.
“There were challenges along the way, ups and downs, yet
the initial philosophy and values stayed,” she said. “The
values haven’t changed.”
Sr. Maria now finds herself teaching children of the
students she had in the early days of VASJ.
“I have parents come up and say, ‘Do you remember me?’”
she said. “It’s a family thing. That’s the thread, the magic of
VASJ. The seeds were planted and challenges had to be met
and now it has flowered into a fabulous school.”
That fabulousness takes many forms – academic, spiritual,
athletic and physical, among others.
For the past three years, every graduate has gone on to
higher education. Vigorous college prep and Advanced
Placement courses have led VASJ graduates to Harvard,
Northwestern, Georgetown and the military academies, to
name just a few.

Those improvements are taking place amid a construction boom in the neighborhood. University
