Suspension: 4 inches of lift using stock length front springs and OE shackles. Rear springs are slightly longer-than-stock Alcan springs and longer shackle. Shocks were originally Pro Comp, but have been beaten to death so much that they really only come along to keep the rest of the suspension company. Finally changed to hi steer last year after wheeling ten years on the stock "push-pull" design. Performance Mods: Engine bored .040 over, Engnbldr Crawler cam, stock exhaust, supra airflow sensor, homemade intake tube assembly. Other Accessories: I have an Addicted Off-road front bumper with Warn winch and synthetic line. Also, equipped with a homemade rear bumper, sliders, and exo cage (thanks Dave!). Went with the “exo” because I'm just over 6' 2" and didn't want to compete for space inside the cab with a bunch of tube. Modified seat brackets in order to slide rearward more. I have just fewer than 20 LEDs under the truck that work great as rock lights (thanks Ben!). I once had a sweet set of spinner hubcaps that made it through a few trails before being ground into the rocks, see photo right. Does it work the way you want? I can say the truck is “uber” reliable as I have only had to leave it on the trail once in thirteen years, and that was due to the weak steering "J" arm. The only thing even close to that was when two injectors lost their ground because the factory crimps in the wiring harness failed. Two cylinders firing, it still drove 60 miles to get me home! The Downey e-locker cable kit has always been a bit tricky to lock and unlock the rear. I've had many strange looks and comments about it over the years. Anything I would change? If I had a big bag of money, I would go for an engine swap like the 3.4L or 4.7L. I always wished I had gone with the 5.29 ratio in the differentials. Climbing up I-70 to the continental divide with the exo cage acting both as an anchor and a parachute is very frustrating. I am very tempted to just start building my 3rd gen 4runner to gain the extra horses and easy ingress for my son. Toughest trail/obstacle: I have mainly played around in my home State of Colorado, but have made it out the Moab and was able to meet some of the Low Range Off-Road staff at the 2013 Rock Therapy put on by Tacoma World. I have been to most of the 7-8 class trails within 3-4 hours of Denver. I recently suffered a main leaf break while on the Holy Cross trail (bailing wire and hose clamps are a must for your tool kit, saved my bacon). My next goal is to get through the multiple trails in Penrose, Colorado as time and family allow. Maybe you have, but maybe you really haven't payed much attention to who they are or what they do. " Baja Designs has been at the forefront of LED Lighting technology for some years. Why are they at the forefront? Baja Designs does something that a lot of LED Lighting companies don't do Compromise. Baja Designs not only manufactures their LED lights only out of the best components available, they have the best LED's driving them. " Many imported LED Lighting companies use inferior components with the wrong temperature of light. What does this mean? Well, if you go down to your optometrist and you get a poor set of glasses, can you see well? Maybe the lens wasn't right, maybe there was a slight defectwhatever it is, it's not perfect. You want to see, right? Are you going to take any chances when it comes to your own eyesight? No, you want to not only see well - you want your eyesight to last. " Baja Designs knows this, that is why they design their lights in the color range our eyes are used to. Maybe you see a light that says 6500K...what does this mean? 6500 is the light intensity in the Kelvin Light Temperature Scale. A warm color similar to a regular incandescent bulb is described as 3000 Kelvin, whereas, a cool color similar to day-light is 5000 Kelvin. That's exactly what Baja Designs puts their LED Lights at... 5000K, Exactly what our eyes love! Yeah, you know you have seen a car on the road with extremely obnoxious blue light, they are in the high "K" scale of light. " Baja Designs also manufactures their LED's to run at 100%. If they say that they are a 10W LED, they are going to run it at it's full potential. You may get a lighting company that claims that they have a 3W or 5W LED, but usually it is only running at 60% or less efficiency. Why? No thermal management. If they run their LED's at 100 percent, they will die with a short lifespan. The only way to get the claimed 50,000 hours is by decreasing the LED's potential, creating less heat. Baja Designs not only adds thermal management to their lights, they attach it to a copper board. Copper's ability to handle heat is incredible! " Last but not least, Baja Designs LED Lights have uService® – Replaceable Lenses And Optics. If you don't like the way the light is being directed, you don't have to scrap the light- just replace the lenses...yourself... and you won't even void the warranty! Did we say they have a lifetime warranty?
