Welcome to the 58th Annual Room to Bloom Celebration!
This year promises to be the most exciting, inventive and elegant experience yet! The Auxiliary has tailored
this spring’s fundraiser to celebrate the tradition of Room to Bloom while continuing to move in a direction
that is fresh and innovative. The festivities begin on Wednesday, April 27th and continue through Friday,
May 20th. Please join us in support of the Mint Museum.
All parties and events are by paid reservation, and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage you
to respond promptly, as several events have limited capacity.
We would especially like to thank all of the sponsors, party hosts, committee members and Auxiliary
volunteers for this year’s event. Please know that your support, as well as the support of our generous
sponsors, enables the Mint Museum to enhance its educational programs and grow its acquisitions for the
permanent collections.
We look forward to seeing you during our Room to Bloom Celebration!

Oscar de la Renta left his native

While living in Spain, he became interested in the

Spanish fashion houses, which soon led to an
apprenticeship with Spain’s most renowned
couturier, Cristóbal Balenciaga. Later, he left Spain
to join Antonio Castillo as a couture assistant at the
house of Lanvin in Paris. In 1963, he came to New
York to design the couture collection for Elizabeth

Miles Redd/Symposium Speaker
Raised in Atlanta, Miles Redd moved to
New York to study film at New York University. More interested in set design, he
began working for antiques dealer John
Rosselli after graduation, which would
serve as a hands-on education in furniture and the decorative arts.
Later hired by decorator Bunny Williams, Redd honed his eye as a shopper and design assistant, combing the 26th
Street flea market and frequenting the great antiquarians for beautiful finds. His tiny East Village apartment
became a laboratory for his particular brand of cozy glamour: he painted the floor in an emerald green harlequin
pattern, stacked books to the ceiling, and hung works of art ranging from his own figure drawings to a 19th
century copy of a Velásquez Infanta. This playful mix of high and low, emboldened by color and modern gestures
but grounded in practicality, would come to define Redd’s style.
After a brief stint studying painting in Lacoste, France, he returned to New York and began decorating friends’
apartments. One job led to another and in 1998 Redd opened his own office in Noho. At ease working in a variety of
styles and settings, he relies on innovation and imagination to create comfortable, elegant interiors that express
a client’s personality. Traditional room arrangements find their foil in juxtapositions of surface texture—lacquer
and plaster, satin and linen—but without becoming precious. He believes in a pragmatic approach to living well and
finds the best collaborations come from a meeting of the minds and a shared sense of humor.
Having completed many New York apartments, Redd has also worked on such diverse projects as a Miami Beach
condominium, a ranch in Wyoming and a farmhouse in the South of France. He is currently decorating an Upper
East Side townhouse, a house in San Francisco, and a Nantucket beach house. Redd also lends his time to
organizations like Housing Works and the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House. His work has been featured in New
York Magazine, Vogue, House Beautiful, Elle Décor, House & Garden, W, and Town & Country. In 2003, Redd was
named creative director of Oscar de la Renta Home.

American Art that will be held at the museum’s new
building: From New York to Corrymore: Robert Henri

organized by The Mint Museum and will open to the
public on May 7, 2011. It will feature more than forty of
Henri’s best paintings from the years that he spent on
Achill Island in Ireland, which are being lent by both
public and private collections across the country.
Henri first visited Ireland in 1913. He found it so
inspiring that he later purchased a home there (named
“Corrymore”) and returned every summer between
1924 and 1928. My Friend Brien was completed during
Henri’s first summer on Achill Island. It depicts Brien
O’Malley, who served as Henri’s guide to the island and
who, we discovered during research for the show, was
truly the island’s patriarch, for he was related to many
of the sitters in Henri’s paintings! The exhibition will

Auxiliary History
O
Detail from a painting by Laura Coombs Hills. American, 1859-1952
In 1936, the Mint Museum of Art opened as North Carolina’s first art museum
although it had no collection. A year later, four paintings comprised its art holdings.
Over the next two decades, the collection grew slowly and
was dependent entirely upon local donations. Then, in the
mid-1950’s, the museum was to benefit from the efforts
of a dedicated group of community volunteers. With the
founding of the Women’s Auxiliary, as it was known then, a
long roster of members have since contributed thousands
of volunteer hours to generate funds to the support the
museum and its collection. The Auxiliary has a long and
celebrated history with the Mint Museum.
Today, the collection at the Mint Museum numbers over
29,000 items. The Mint Museum Auxiliary has been a
major purchasing power behind the collection. The
Auxiliary has acquired thousands of artworks for the
museum that include paintings, ceramics, costumes,
sculptures, crafts and works on paper. It has been a rich
journey that began in 1960 with the Auxiliary’s first art
acquisition, a Portrait of Sir Andrew Cherry by the English
painter Frederick Richard Lee.
The most important purchase of 1960 was In the Glen by
American painter John La Farge. In the 1970’s, the
Auxiliary purchased 112 items including Storage Jar. This
piece dates to 2200 BC and represents the oldest Chinese
piece in the collection. Also in this decade, members of the
Auxiliary founded the Mint Museum of Art’s costume
collection which now numbers over 8,500 items.
In the 1980’s, the Auxiliary purchased a variety of artwork
including works from some of North Carolina’s most
important potters, and a work by Harvey Littleton, known
as the Father of North Carolina glass.
In the 1990’s, the Auxiliary purchased over $200,000
worth of Spanish Colonial Art and acquired Nature’s
Rushing Force which was painted in 1868 and depicts the
North Carolina wilderness. Also in the 1990’s the
Auxiliary set about to create an acquisitions endowment,
nicknamed EMMA, the Endowment for the Mint Museum
Auxiliary. The purpose of this endowment is to acquire
works of art consistent with the curatorial goals of the
Mint Museum in accordance with the Auxiliary’s
acquisitions procedures. The funds are raised through
the Auxiliary’s annual Mint To Be Yours Tag Sale and the
Room To Bloom spring celebration. The funds are
currently managed by the Foundation for the Carolinas.
Over the years, the Auxiliary has contributed greatly to
the wealth of the museum’s permanent collection. The
funds generated by the Auxiliary members have touched
nearly every area within the museum’s collection. The
partnership between the Mint Museum and the Mint
Museum Auxiliary has been rich, strong and beneficial to
both the museum and the city of Charlotte.
