the Eagle GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB NEWSLETTER As you walk down the fairway of life you must smell the roses, for you only get to play one round. –Ben Hogan August/September 2013 from the Board & Management Dear Members, Ralph Winer bog president Kraig Spina general manager We hope you are having a wonderful summer. The Board, Committees and Staff are working during the remaining summer months to finalize plans for the upcoming season. We look forward to offering many new and innovative activities, and dining options as well as exciting golf, tennis and fitness offerings. The 2013-2014 fiscal year budget process is now under way and will be presented to the Budget and Finance Committee in October, with recommendations from the committee being forwarded to the Board of Governors for approval. We continue to report great news on the membership sales and real estate front. From November 1, 2012 through July 2, 2013, we have closed or have under contract to close 70 units, which is putting us on track to exceed prior years’ sales from as far back as 2002. These sales have generated $1,300,000+ in new member fees and assessments through July. The inventory of homes and condos has dropped from 120 in 2011 to 95 in 2012 to our current level of 65 condos and 5 homes. Many of our new members have invested significantly in renovations to their units. The Club is developing a Floor Plans brochure for our garden villas and updated photo galleries on our website to showcase some of the newly renovated units. By far, the largest contributor to our recent success has been the forward thinking of the Board of Governors and the many new programs implemented to encourage real estate sales. With promotions ranging from the Under 66 Discount (21 sales year to date), to the Second Unit Purchase Program (12 sales year to date), to Stay & Play (3 sales year to date) to the forthcoming Renovator Program, we have consistently implemented new ideas and programs which have paid off significantly for the Club. The Clubhouse Renovation project is progressing as planned. We are currently making our way through the Design Development phase. In this phase, we will work with the Interior Designer, Architect and other consultants to identify floor treatments and finishes, wall and ceiling finishes, decorative lighting concepts, and furniture and fabric concepts. The first presentation of these facets will be in late July to the Board of Governors, Management Staff and Common Area Maintenance Committee. Our goal throughout this process is consensus. Throughout the summer months, multiple projects are taking place to maintain the infrastructure and facilities within your Club. During the club closure, the staff and contractors will attend to numerous projects which would prove to be cumbersome and disruptive during normal Club operations. The club closure will allow a safe and orderly completion of these projects. Recently, the Board of Governors approved installing beverage stations within the four remaining satellites of Loch Maree, Glendevon, Lomond Hills and Clunie. These upgrades will be completed by year end 2013. Loch Maree and Glendevon have already been completed. We send our best wishes for an enjoyable summer. We look forward to seeing you around the Club! Respectfully yours, Ralph Winer, President Kraig Spina, General Manager 2 August/September 2013 7667 Victory Lane Delray Beach, FL 33446 561-498-3606 • 800-535-4536 FAX 561-498-5838 www.gleneagles.cc Club Phone Numbers Clubhouse. . . . . . . . . . . 498-3606 Reservations . . . . . . . . . 498-4003 Security . . . . . . . . . . . . . 921-9999 Golf Shop. . . . . . . . . . . . 496-1333 Tennis Shop. . . . . . . . . . 499-0211 Chelsea Tee Times. . . . 637-1208 Fitness Center. . . . . . . . 495-2806 Membership Office. . . . 498-0707 2013-2014 board of governors Ralph Winer. . . . . . . . . . . The golf staff has been busy putting together the final touches on the upcoming season, and it looks great. We are re-vamping the scorecard. It will be smaller, and will have the local rules on it. The practice facility will be closed July 29 - August 12. In the Golf Shop Congrats! Rich North • Eagle June 24, 2013 on #11 Legends pro golf tip: sips & grips As you know, I am a big advocate of staying hydrated in the summer. Remember, by the time you get really thirsty, you are already dehydrated, so keep those cups full! On the range, please watch your time: always take a break, have a seat and rest for a moment. Grip pressure is always a very important topic for the golf swing. If your grip pressure is too tight, there is no feel, and this will hurt the swing. It can cause you to top a lot of shots because it is hard to release the club with a tight grip. Proper grips on your clubs are really important as well. If your hands hurt, maybe it is time to get a bigger grip on your clubs so you do not have to close your hand so much. When players start to get a little arthritis, these bigger grips help a lot! Stop in the Golf Shop and see us if you have a question regarding your grips. – Joe Brett Foti retail manager Whether you are up north or here in sunny Delray for the summer, I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather we’ve been having! With all of this gorgeous weather you must stop by and pick up a few fresh new outfits for your golf game with the ladies. There is no better place than in your own Gleneagles Golf Shop. We have a great selection of new groups arriving in early August through the end of September, so don’t miss out! Sport Haley has a fashionably unique collection arriving with trendy traditional prints and stunning colors like Rose Peach and Honeydew. Look out for the Jamie Sadock as well! Her soft Opaline Blue tones mixed with Amazona Olive and Jet Black will make anyone turn their head when you walk by. 4 August/September 2013 the Eagle august & september Dates that rate Labor Day Mixer Sunday, September 1 All tennis members are invited to enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast on the tennis patio from 8:00-9:00 am. Following breakfast we will play 1.5 hours of men’s, women’s and mixed doubles. Reminder: All tennis events (unless otherwise noted) are open to all tennis members regardless if you play or not. We want you to get the most from your membership, so please join us for the camaraderie that the food and beverage portion of our events provides. Please register for all events and no guests are allowed unless otherwise stated. Mixers are not competitive events. Scores are not recorded and awards are not given. Please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early for events and remain to completion. pro tennis tip: GET A (NEW) GRIP Even though you may have been playing tennis for many years, you still may be able to tweak your grip position to enhance your game. Grips contribute power and spin to your game while allowing flexibility in your shot selection. If you learned to play more than 20 years ago, chances are you will have a continental grip on both sides, (where the “V” the thumb and forefinger create is on the left bevel of the grip for righties), producing a flat to topspin forehand and a one-handed slice backhand. Moving your grip just slightly, 1/8 of an inch to the right on your forehand, (for righties), will produce more topspin. If you would ever like to develop a topspin backhand, it is essential to move your grip at least ¼ inch to the left. This will close the face and provide proper wrist position. Serving with a forehand grip? Don’t expect any spin. Ideally, a serve, (first and second) should be hit with a continental grip, (as should BOTH forehand and backhand volleys). If you are willing to put in a little work and trust the process, try experimenting with grip adjustments. It will give you power, variety and control. – Mike Gleneagles Country Club on our COURTS Racquet Talk Mike Puc, uspta director of tennis & fitness The tennis department recently conducted a survey to research the desires of our membership prior to establishing the 2013 – 2014 Calendar of Events. Of 95 replies, some of the key results were: • 67% of respondents favored allowing guests to social mixers. • 50% would allow non-players to Member Guest events. • 76% would play in mixer events that did not offer food service. • Most members enjoy BOTH the tennis patio and clubhouse for food service. • Price overwhelmingly did NOT affect participation. • 80% prefer morning events to afternoon events. The staff and Tennis Committee will discuss these comments and wishes and adjust the calendar accordingly. We win! We win! In recently completed spring league play, Gleneagles won not one, but two championships. The Fall Golden Girls captained by Gail Glickman and Ann North won in convincing fashion while the Sunday Mixed League captained by Shelly Bender Tennis squeaked out a dramatic one-point win. Congratulations pro shop to all and thank you for representing Gleneagles so well. 499-0211 Golden Girls: Shula Aranowitz, Maddy Bender, Gail Glickman, Ilene Kahan, Sheila Krauser, Liz Lichtner, Ellen Monday Mermelstein, Bianca Mintz, Ann North, Trudy Patron, Closed. August/September 2013 5 fitness center the Real way to get a tight belly! One of the most frequent questions the Fitness Center staff is asked is, “How do I get rid of my belly?” More often than not, you’d be expecting a set of exercises, consisting of endless crunches to get that six pack. group class schedule* Aquacise Monday Wednesday Friday Saturday 9:30 am - 10:30 am 9:30 am - 10:30 am 9:30 am - 10:30 am 9:30 am - 10:30 am Cardio Sculpt Monday 8:00 am - 9:00 am Wednesday 8:00 am - 9:00 am strength Tuesday Friday 9:00 am - 10:00 am 7:45 am - 8:45 am sit to be fit Monday 10:30 am - 11:30 am Friday 9:30 am - 10:30 am Sunday 10:00 am - 11:00 am TAI CHI Monday 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm YOGA Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Saturday 9:15 am - 10:15 am 8:00 am - 9:00 am 3:45 pm - 4:45 pm 8:00 am - 9:00 am 8:00 am - 9:00 am ZUMBA Saturday 9:30 am - 10:30 am *Subject to change. The abdominal exercise group performed two sets of 10 repetitions of seven abdominal exercises, five times per week, for six weeks. At the end of the study, the exercise group showed no change in body weight, body composition or abdominal circumference. However, they were able to endure more abdominal exercises and had increased strength in the abdominal muscles after those 6 weeks. So what’s the real way? Your daily diet is the real and only way. You can take the following steps to reduce your waistline. Step 1: Jump Starting Your Metabolism • Eat breakfast. Eating breakfast within an hour of waking up keeps your insulin levels steadier and your bad cholesterol lower. • Decompress. The secretion of cortisol, caused by stress, is correlated with an increase in belly fat. • Aim to take 10,000 steps a day. • Switch out refined grains for whole grains. • Drink plenty of water. Step 2: Exercising for Fat Loss • Exercise in small bursts. • Skip the crunches – for now. Abdominal crunches and sit ups should build strong muscles, but you might not see them under belly fat. • Increase cardiovascular exercise. • Add resistance training. Step 3: Dieting for Fat Loss • Reduce calorie consumption. • Eat good fats. • Get more fiber in your diet. Step 4: Staying Motivated • Join forces with a friend. • Understand risks associated with belly fat. Gleneagles Country Club ♠ ♥ At The Bridge Table by pat hunn Throughout the entire year, in and out of season, Gleneagles Bridge hosts two American Contract Bridge League sanctioned duplicate bridge games each week. Every Tuesday evening, at 7:00 pm, we hold an open game in the ♦ ♣ Ladies Card Room, followed by a ladies’ game at 12 noon, each Wednesday afternoon in the Legends Lounge. During 2012-2013, almost 1300 tables played duplicate bridge here. This is an astounding attendance considering that we play only two sessions a week! ACBL masterpoints are awarded to the leading players at each game and each first place winner receives a free game. During the last Tuesday game of each month, in season, a separate section of bridge is reserved for players in our two lowest strata, making it easier for these players to earn masterpoints and advance in stature within the ACBL. Each year, more of our members achieve Life-Master status within the hierarchy of the ACBL, and their achievement (along with the bridge accomplishments of other members) is honored on the Gleneagles Bridge bulletin boards in the breezeway of the clubhouse. Sadly, their peers do not recognize the accomplishments of some of our members who earn masterpoints, because they have not joined the ACBL. Besides masterpoint achievement recognition, ACBL members receive The Bridge Bulletin, which highlights bridge news and informative articles for players of all levels. Recently, a series of articles by Eddie Kantar was entitled “52 Facts of Bridge Life,” and presented a primer of information that every bridge player should know. Articles are available on the ACBL web site, ACBL.org. Additionally, ACBL supports many charities. This year, the “Longest Day” event held on June 21st contributed to Alzheimer’s research. Many of us who participated were given buttons and purple convention card holders indicating support of this important cause. The convention card holders will come in handy, since, starting next October, each pair playing in our duplicates will be required to have at least one filled in convention card. Our director, JoAnne Casen, will be pleased to assist all who need guidance in filling out a convention card. A simplified convention card, entitled “Standard American Yellow Card” (“SAYC”) is available on the ACBL web site. Membership in the ACBL costs only $28 for the first year and $37 a year thereafter. It is easy to join by calling 800-264-2743 or going online at ACBL.org. Participation in the ACBL is well worth the cost, since it enhances each member’s bridge experience. Finally, I am sad to report that our longtime bridge director, Ruthie Gold, passed away on June 13. Gleneagles Bridge mourns her passing and extends our comfort and consolation to her family and many friends. Bridge Computer Club News by marvin silverston, president Hope you are all having a good summer. Before I go any further, I must say a work of thanks. Jerry Bartzoff, after being our webmaster for the last 9 years has decided to retire from this position. Fortunately, he will continue to serve on the Computer Club Board. Anything that he will undertake in the future will be done with the same enthusiasm that he has displayed in the past. As for those of you who have opened gleneaglescomputer.org recently, you may have noticed we have changed the layout of the web site. All the old favorites are still there and they will now be maintained by our new webmaster, Len Merel. This is still a work in progress, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Our first program will be an introduction to our new web site on October 21 at 3:00 pm in Strathearn Satellite. Classes & workshops will start on November 4. Membership in the Computer Club is open to all Gleneagles residents for $20 per year per family. Even though some of our board members are away for the summer, we will continue to help you with your computer problems. You can get help by going to help@ gleneaglescomputer.org or call 637-1231 and leave a message. Please do not call anyone individually because even though we do not go away for the entire summer, we may not be here when you call and that will only delay receiving help. HAPPY COMPUTING! Gleneagles Country Club Summer is here! This can be a great time for relaxing with family and friends while enjoying the nice weather. But it can also be dangerous if you don’t take the proper precautions. Your body works hard every day to maintain a normal temperature. Given the nature of South Florida’s high temperatures (not including the humidity factor), the heat forces your body to work harder than normal, which could lead to heat-related illnesses. Typically, heat-related illnesses result from prolonged exposure to the sun. This includes simple sunburns, heat exhaustion and sometimes even heat stroke. Here a few the simple tips for summer safety: • Drink plenty of water. The easiest way to stay cool is also a great way to stay hydrated and safe while out in the sun. Make sure to have plenty of water on hand during the day, whether you’re outdoors or not. • Protect your skin. Use sunscreen when you know you’ll be outside for a prolonged period of time during the day. Wear a hat to lessen sun exposure to the face and neck. • Limit strenuous activity and exercise. If you exercise regularly, try it during the early morning or late evenings. Take regular breaks when possible if you have to work outdoors. • Take frequent breaks to cool down. When spending time out in the hot sun, it’s beneficial to take numerous breaks to allow your body to recover. Having a cool area in your home in which to recover can also be beneficial. • Check on your friends and family. The heat can be especially difficult on young children and the elderly, so make sure to check regularly on your family, friends and neighbors during hot spells. If you have any questions, please feel to call Security at 921-9999. Thank and have a great summer! attention veterans If you would like to be included in our Veteran’s Day Tribute in November, please send a copy of your photo to: Veterans Photos c/o Membership & Marketing 7667 Victory Lane Delray Beach, FL 33446 You can also e-mail your photo to [email protected].
