giggles in young couples; but it is
something of an experience when
you realize that the “young couple”
has been married 60 years, yet that
is exactly what Willard and Carol
Gilmore share.
When the couple met, they
were both in school, and Willard
explains, “I was friends with
Carol’s older brother Marlo, so I
always thought of her as his sister.
In 1940, I was 1A for the draft list,
so I enlisted in the National Guard.
I served with the 147th Field
Artillery from Flandreau. When I
in both the Pacific, and European
theater.
Five years made the
difference.”
Carol explained, “We went
together about three months,
when we decided to get married.
Our engagement was six months
long.”
The couple wed April 19, 1947 in
Mankato and had a small ceremony
because of recent deaths in the

family. At the time, Carol was an
operator with the local telephone
company, and the Northern States
Power Company employed Willard.
He retired from NSP after 40 years.
Over time, Carol held the position
of Deputy Treasurer for Pipestone
County, and did bookwork for
several local businesses.
Shortly after the wedding, the
couple built their home. For $8,000
they built and furnished it, and “the
payments were $48.48 a month on
a GI loan,” Willard explained. “We
moved into the house in the fall
of 1949, and I remember it wasn’t
very good timing because we did it
the weekend of hunting opener.”
Willard hunts and fishes, and
has shared these passions with
their two sons.
The couple tends to finish each
others thoughts and reminiscences
have input from both of them. One
such story came out because while
it is common today for a woman to
enter marriage unable to cook, and
with fast food and restaurants in
abundance, it may not be a crisis at
all. However, at the time they wed,
Carol admits that she didn’t cook
very well.
“We had just moved into the
house, and my brother was over
for dinner, I made a roast and
was trying to make gravy. What
happened is that it turned into a
ball in the middle of the pan. It
tasted OK, but my brother thought
it was dumplings it was so thick,”
she explained.
The couple cites two things
as the key to the success of their
marriage, “faith in God, and the
fact that while we might not agree
on everything, there has been
nothing that we haven’t been able
to talk out,” Carol said.
Willard went on, “The best part
of our marriage has been the good
times, there have been so many, it
isn’t really just one thing. We have
had some tough ones too, but we
have so much to be thankful for.”
The tough times they have had
include losing a child at six weeks
old, and the financial hardship
created by that loss. Willard is
a two-time survivor of cancer
and Carol has had several ear
surgeries.
For Willard, one of the toughest
times was his first trip to the
hospital. He explained, “I was
worried because I had a wife and
two sons ages 15 and 13, and I
didn’t know if I would be able to
care for them.”

surgeries, “I was worried about
Willard,” she said.
As a family, vacations have
been a standard part of their life,
and one was funded in a rather
unusual way. Willard explains,
“In 1960, I quit smoking. I had
smoked two packs a day, so every
day I threw 50 cents in a jar. In
1966, we bought a new Chrysler
with air conditioning, and I took
the family to California. We went
to Disneyland, stayed in a nice
hotel across the street, and went
to Knott’s Berry Farm, and Marine
Land. While we were there, we
visited my sister and brother, and
several of the people I served with.
The result of throwing 50 cents a
day in a jar was $1,000, and a trip
that we still talk about.”
The couple also explained that
over the years, they have made
several friends through the Peaceto-Peace organization, and in
1973 and 1982 their friends from
Australia came for visits. They still
write.

ATLAS helps couples
achieve financial strength

While the services offered by
ATLAS (Attaining Truth, Love, And
Self-control) for Life are not strictly
for those entering marriage or the
newlywed set, they have a place in
the bridal edition because many
marriages fail because of financial
difficulties.
Bob and Stella Menning have
been married 44 years. ATLAS
was started in Edgerton in 2004,
and moved by the board of
directors to Pipestone “Two years
ago this coming February,” Stella
explained. Continuing, she said,
“We are an interdenominational
Christian non-profit mentorship
program.
We are supported
through the generous donations
of volunteer time and money
made by local people, churches,
and businesses who believe that
this program has merit. We have
a prayer coordinator, many prayer
partners, a mentor coordinator,
and 25 to 30 mentors from local
churches that make a one-year
mentorship commitment to the
client. Often, young people are
simply not prepared to budget and
live within their means, and that
can cause conflict in all areas of
their marriage.”
“Financial mentorship is just
a part of what we do here, but
going through the Dave Ramsey
Financial Peace University class
as a couple prior to marriage, can
give the couple a stronger financial
future if they can apply what they
learn in the class to their lives
at a young age,” Bob explained.
Continuing, he said, “The financial
management of the home is similar
to that of a business, and if people
thought about it that way, they
would realize that every business
needs a business manager, or
someone to take care of their
money. Just like a business, a
home has income and expenses if
you prefer, and sometimes people
figure they will just get by. This
course will show them how to look
at the true cost of credit, how to
budget, regardless of their financial
situation, and to see how important
savings can be. If they invest just
$2,000 a year from the age of 19 to
29 at four percent annual interest,
they will have $24,858.84 at the age
of 29, and $94,322.30 at age 65. At
a 6 percent annual interest rate,

an annual July 4 celebration. Carol
explained, “This was a way for us
to celebrate and be grateful for our
freedom. We always had a reading
of some kind, it wasn’t anything
formal, but it allowed us to see our
friends and share some good food.
We did it for 12 years, and the last
one was held in 2000.”
Carol went on, “The event took
about two weeks of planning, and it
was fun for us, it was a lot of work,
but also a lot of fun. The time at
the event was good for renewing
friendships with people that we
didn’t see all the time.”
Through the years, the couple
has participated in the Song of
Hiawatha Pageant, and the Opland
Singers. Willard and Carol were
co-chairs along with Verne and
WilmaDeen Long on the first All
Class Reunion Committee in 1976,
“It was a marvelous committee and
the event was a grand success,”
Carol explained.
Additionally,
hunting and fishing have been a
big part of their lives.
For this couple, “there hasn’t
been a hardest part,” but the best
part has been “always having a
companion.”
Carol explained to the young
people out there, “Be sure to listen
to each other. What you hear may
be different than what they are
intending to say, so listen and talk
to each other.”

work; the mentors just guide them
through the process.”
Stella continued, “We, our
mentors, and our prayer partners
pray for our clients, it is rare that a
client will decline prayer. One way
of looking at what we do is seeing
life as a path, sometimes people fall
off the path and into a hole due to a
variety of circumstances, financial
being just one of the many holes. If
they have their arms outstretched,
we can help, if they have their
arms crossed across their chest as
they are in the hole, we can’t help.
They have to be willing to accept
what we offer, and once they do,
the mentor becomes someone to
walk down the path with them, as
a guide, and a friend.”

“It hasn’t been perfect,
but it’s close”

Bastian (Cap) and Marilynn
Wabeke of Ruthton have been
married 52 years and have seven
children, 18 grandchildren, and
nine great grandchildren. The
couple explains, “We love every
one of them, and we like having
them around, they keep us active
and make our days shorter.”
The keys to the longevity and
strength of their relationship
have been “family, doing things
together, faith in God, and
communication.”
Cap taught physics and math
in the Ruthton School District for
34 years, and explained, “Things
were tight but we always had food
on the table. Finances for a young
couple can be a real problem, and I
understand that because we raised
seven children on a teacher’s salary.
I hunt and fish and we always had

a garden, so all of those things
helped.”
They agree that financial issues
can be a problem, but they solved
these issues together, by talking
about what the money needed to
be spent on, and deciding what the
priorities were.
While Cap hunts and likes
to fish, Marilynn likes to fish as
well, and she explained, “The
more things that you like to do in
common, the better off you are.
When Cap was coaching, I actually
made more games than he did, he
was sick for one.”
While Cap taught school,
Marilynn ran a daycare from their
home for 26 years, and is a licensed
practical nurse. Cap explained,
“It took a lot of effort on her part
to keep the kids happy. At one
point, we had six preschool aged
children, without any twins, until

Marital advice
from the Wabekes
Bastian (Cap) and Marilynn Wabeke had some
considerations for newlyweds, and those getting
ready to get married.
1. The more things you like to do in common,
the better off you will be in the end.
2. Family is crucial, but you should not expect
that children will solve relationship problems.
Generally, they make things tougher.
3. A sense of humor helps.
4. Communication about all of life is important,
and important decisions should be made together.
5. Faith helps a relationship, because it takes
three, you, your spouse, and God. If you and your
spouse both give 100 percent, God will do the rest.

most important element of their relationship. Marilynn said of the journey with her husband
through life: “It’s been quite a ride.”

Dawn went to kindergarten. She was wonderful
with them. We never had any of the kids get into any
trouble, they all graduated, and it is a credit to her.”
The couple is active in the Methodist church, and
Marilynn explains, “Having faith helps, regardless of
the religion. Being active in the church helps keeps
the family together, and if things get shaky, there is
always someone to talk with.”
The hardest thing in the relationship for both of
them was when Marilynn was in the hospital. Cap
explained, “Until that point, we hadn’t been apart
more than two or three days at any given time, and
the times we were apart were usually for hunting or
fishing trips out west.”
The couple started dating when Marilynn was
in eighth grade. Marilynn explains, “I went to high
school, and he went into the service for three years.
We got married when I was 19 at my parents’ home
August 3, 1955.” They renewed their vows on their
50th anniversary in a church. Marilynn explains,
“Having humor helps, the vow renewal was a perfect
example of that.”
Cap explained the laugh saying, “I had gotten her
a new engagement ring, and I lost it. She offered a
$50 reward if anyone found it, but it was five days
after the ceremony when it turned up. I found it, and
never did get the $50,” he said with a grin.
While the couple “never fought physically, never
abused each other,” they did often have “loud
discussions.” Marilynn explained, “The tough times
are when we had the most words, but we always
worked it out.”
When asked for one sentence to describe their
relationship, Cap said, “It hasn’t been perfect, but it’s
close.”
Marilynn said, “It has been quite a ride.”

Couples focus on program FOCCUS

Pastor Kurt Ploeger of the
Cornerstone Free Church in
Pipestone has been in full-time
ministry for 18 years, has been
married to Stacy for 21 years, and
they have two children; Kelsey,
19 and B.J., 17. Ploeger explains,
“Today, there are a lot of stresses
and strains on families and
marriages, and when I counsel a
couple, I pass on the things I have
learned.”
Ploeger goes on saying, “In 2001,
many of the Pipestone clergy and
lay leaders in the churches signed
on to the Marriage Covenant
which is basically a document that
states that we have a commitment
to building stronger marriages in
our community. Part of the way
we accomplish that is through
premarital counseling, and the
benefit for couples doing that is
that they can get half off the price
of their marriage license if they can
prove that they have had at least
12 hours of premarital counseling.
This is important because it shows
that out state government has a
commitment to strong marriages
as well.”
Ploeger uses the program
“FOCCUS,
or
Facilitating
Open-Couple Communication,
Understanding, and Study. The
program also has a re-FOCCUS
portion that can be used
approximately one year into the
marriage to help couples continue
with and build on what they have
learned.”
Ploeger noted that many
marriage savers groups use a
nondenominational version of
this course, and he has used the
Prepare and Enrich program as
well.
The point of this counseling
is to cover the basics such as
“communication
skills
like
proper ways to express feelings;
conflict resolution skills because
the bottom line is that in any
marriage there are going to be
disagreements
and
couples
need to know how to deal with

these things in a constructive
and respectful way. We discuss
family background because each
person brings to marriage a family
history, and within that history are
things that they want to emulate,
and things they want to change.
We discuss finances in a real and
concrete way through the use of
a mock budget and other lessons.
There are actually four to five
exercises in the program dealing
with finances because financial
issues are the second most cited
reason for marital difficulty. The
fact is, most premarital couples
have not addressed financial issues
much, and couples combining

Finally, the program addresses the
spiritual piece of marriage, and
we discuss the Biblical teachings
on marriage and relationships,
spirituality, and faith because they
are interwoven into everything
else.”
Beyond those things, Ploeger
explains, “We address the issues
of forgiveness and reconciliation
because if conflict is not resolved,
there will be ongoing problems in
the marriage. One thing I stress
when I counsel couples is that
they need to look at Jesus as an
example of a selfless life, and look
at how to apply that example to
their lives. We are supposed to be
selfless in marriage, meaning that
we must be willing to sacrifice and
love another. Each person in the
relationship needs to understand
that their needs should be
second to those of their spouse
sometimes.”
A few things Ploeger wanted
couples to know about premarital
counseling is that some churches
have found that couple to couple
counseling
or
mentorship
programs are often more effective
than professional counseling or
counseling with just the minister
because the other couple is more
available when there is a problem.
There is a small fee involved for
the program materials, “around
$20 for the FOCCUS, and around
$35 for the Prepare and Enrich.”
Ploeger
explains,
“While
premarital
counseling
won’t
solve all problems in a marriage,
learning these skills in the
beginning can minimize the
difficulties. Programs like this
allow couples to focus on their
strengths and weaknesses, and
help both parties to understand
more fully what they are getting
into. They are preventative in
nature, like having a good diet and
exercising may prevent a heart
attack, these courses are designed
to help prevent divorce.”
