In the 1960s, Austria suffered severe
worker shortage. Hiring locations in
Turkey and Yugoslavia were looking for
“guest workers” for Austrian companies:
Only young, healthy, strong and qualified
people were allowed to travel west.
The exhibition shows the life stories of
people still living in Upper Austria today.

During the Second World War, more
than 20 million people from all over
Europe were forced to work in the
German Reich or its occupied territories.
Forced labourers were used in all sectors – in the armaments industry as well
as on building sites, in farming, crafts
and private households. The exhibition
shows the diverse forms of forced labour
by following sixty individual but representative life stories.
