CHILE • Population: Around 17 million • Chile is divided in 15 regions • Chile is among the longest North-South countries in the world. It has a diverse climate that ranges from the world’s driest desert in the north (Atacama desert), through a Mediterrean climate in the center, subtropical in Easter Island to an oceanic climate, including glaciers in the south. ! Independence Day: September 18th Traditional games: Rayuela, palo encebado, volantín. Food: Empanada, Asado(Barbecue), Mote con huesillo, alfajor. Drinks: Terremoto, Piscola, Chicha y Ponche. Traditional Dance: Cueca! Important Cities: Valparaíso: A bay surrounded by a lot of hills. It was declarated humanity patrimony because of it’s architectual riches. It’s very known for its elevators on the hills. Santiago: Largest city and capital of Chile since the colonial times. The Andes mountains can be seen from the highest points of the city. Santiago is surrounded by mountains and hills. LA TIRANA What is “La Tirana”? ! It is an event full of dances, songs and colors to praise the Virgen del Carmen in the village of La Tirana A Catholic celebration ! It is made annually in a small town called La Tirana every 16th of June, which is the “Nuestra señora del Carmen” day. ! It’s the most important religious celebration in Chile. ! It receives 250.000 visitors every year. Where is La Tirana? It is a little town in the North of Chile. It is in an oasis in the Tarapacá Region Near Iquique, an important Chilean city. La Tirana: The legend Diego de Almagro was on his expedition to Chile with a group of natives, between them, Huillac Uma(Priest of the Sun) and Huillac Ñusta(Princess). She escaped with a group of aboriginals to Tamarugal forest and then decided to kill every Christian they could. Until she met a spanish man who she felt in love with him, and got baptized. After a few days, the natives found out about this relationship and killed both of them. Ñusta was buried with a cross, a church was built in her honor, known as La Tirana History of the celebration At the begining, some families went to the hermitage to venerate the virgin. In 1830, the region changed because of the production of saltpeter, as a result of this, a lot of people went to the North. After a few years, a campaign was made to build the church (inaugurated on July the 16th of 1886). In 1930, the saltpeter production started to decrease, although most people left, they stood venerating the virgin every year. La Tirana’s outfit: Masks ! Masks are a fundamental part of the celebration. The masks are produced by the same devotees of the Virgin, with love and care. They are inspired by Chinese carnaval masks because many chinese people came to Chile to work in the saltpeter companies and brought their culture and traditions. Dances La Tirana’s dances are the result of the fusion between the Incan ceremonies, the Chinese carnaval and the dances to honor the bolivian miner’s patron saint. ANTAWARAS Dance on tip-toes with the arms raised to give worship to the sun. Chinos Dance brought from the sanctuary of Andacollo, characterized by its jumps and balance exercises. Chunchos The dancers make circles with steps and long jumps carrying a wooden spear called “chonta”. Diabladas The most striking dance because of the attractive costumes. It’s inspired by bolivian and peruvian dances. It is Based on the adoration to their “god”. They dress like him representing the fight between good and evil.
