La Tirana: The legend
Diego de Almagro was on his
expedition to Chile with a group of
natives, between them, Huillac
Uma(Priest of the Sun) and Huillac
Ñusta(Princess). She escaped with
a group of aboriginals to
Tamarugal forest and then
decided to kill every Christian they
could. Until she met a spanish man
who she felt in love with him, and
got baptized. After a few days, the
natives found out about this
relationship and killed both of
them. Ñusta was buried with a
cross, a church was built in her
honor, known as La Tirana
History of the celebration
At the begining, some families went to the hermitage to
venerate the virgin. In 1830, the region changed because of the
production of saltpeter, as a result of this, a lot of people went to
the North. After a few years, a campaign was made to build the
church (inaugurated on July the 16th of 1886). In 1930, the
saltpeter production started to decrease, although most people
left, they stood venerating the virgin every year.
La Tirana’s outfit: Masks
!
Masks are a fundamental part of the celebration.
The masks are produced by the same devotees of
the Virgin, with love and care. They are inspired by
Chinese carnaval masks because many chinese
people came to Chile to work in the saltpeter
companies and brought their culture and
traditions.
Dances
La Tirana’s dances are the result of the fusion
between the Incan ceremonies, the Chinese
carnaval and the dances to honor the bolivian
miner’s patron saint.
ANTAWARAS
Dance on tip-toes with the arms raised to give
worship to the sun.
Chinos
Dance brought from the sanctuary of Andacollo,
characterized by its jumps and balance exercises.
Chunchos
The dancers make circles with steps and long jumps
carrying a wooden spear called “chonta”.
Diabladas
The most striking dance because of the attractive costumes. It’s
inspired by bolivian and peruvian dances. It is Based on the
adoration to their “god”. They dress like him representing the fight
between good and evil.
