A New Beginning
P
aws and Claws Humane Society
(PCHS) officially opened its new
shelter in NW Rochester on July 30th,
2013. This marks a new chapter in
the organization’s care of lost and abandoned
animals. Situated on nearly two acres, the
shelter is sporting beautiful landscaping
thanks to the generosity of Jim Whiting
Nursery and Garden Center. The land was
acquired through an initial generous donation
of property across the street by Michelle and
Ron Hodge. A second generous donation from
Jack and Mary Ann Remick gave PCHS the
opportunity to move the construction to the
opposite side of 19th Street.
PCHS was born out of the hard work and
compassion of one woman- Marge Mourning.
In 1974, Marge began rescuing dogs out of her
garage by placing ads in the local newspaper,
seeking homes for the rescued dogs. Her
work and reputation grew and soon became
a nonprofit entity dedicated to the rescue and
re-homing of lost and abandoned cats and
dogs. Marge’s mission continues with a state-ofthe-art facility engineered to keep the dogs and cats
as healthy and happy as possible while they await
their forever homes.
Separate air exchange and HVAC systems are in
place to keep disease spread to a minimum. High
pressure power washers equipped with disease-
preventing disinfectants keep the space clean. The
shelter rooms and housing are designed to keep
noise and stress to a minimum. Separate outdoor
runs and two large playgrounds give dogs more
frequent outdoor time. Two dog get-acquainted
rooms offer potential adopters a place to meet and
interact with the dogs.
The cats are located directly off the lobby in
rooms where sunshine is in abundance. All
of our adoptable cats are in clear view. Cats
are either in open rooms or are housed in
two-story cat condos with “private” bathroom
facilities. The kittens especially love running
freely about the open rooms.
The shelter has four quarantine rooms that
can be interchanged between dog and cat
care. This also gives the quarantined animals
more room to stretch. The rooms can also be
converted to whelping areas if needed. The
new shelter features a vet room with an exam
table and all necessary animal care equipment.
A separate bathing area for grooming and
baths keeps the animals looking their best.
The amount of community support was
obvious and overwhelming at the open
house in August. PCHS would like to thank
staff, volunteers, members, donors, and the
Southeast Minnesota community for helping
them realize their dream. We could not have
reached this point in our organization’s history
without the support of all involved.
We invite you to visit the new Rochester shelter
at 3224 19th Street NW. Come see the adoptable
animals awaiting their forever families —
maybe one of those families is yours!

Annual Auction … Going, Going, Gone!
D
id you know that Paws and
Claws Humane Society
(PCHS) is funded entirely
through donations and
fundraising? It’s true, PCHS receives
no governmental funds. With the help
of over 400 volunteers and 15 staff
members, PCHS adopted out over 700
animals in 2012. The year 2013 looks to
be just as strong for adoptions. Each
adoption is a life-saving event. When
animals come to the shelter, they
have a veterinary evaluation and are
provided necessary medical care and
procedures. Standard care includes
vaccinations, appropriate medication,
and spay/neuter. The new shelter
also has an outstanding mortgage of
$616,000. The goal is to pay off this
debt quickly, giving PCHS the ability
to focus on caring for the animals the
society is dedicated to saving.
We hold annual fundraisers to
generate monetary donations and
raise awareness within the community
PCHS Annual events include Wine
Tasting; Pet Walk; Rummage Sale; Golf
Tournament; Pints for Paws Craft Beer

Tasting; New Leash on Life 5K Run/
Walk; and Annual Fall Auction.
The next event is the Annual
Auction on Friday, October 11th. Join
us at the Rochester International Event
Center, a great new venue for the
event! The silent auction starts at 5:30
pm and the live auction starts at 8 pm.
Tickets are $15 which includes a meal
and live music. Canadian Honker
is catering the meal, a guarantee of
delicious food! Whether it’s cooking,
kid fun, home décor, jewelry, artwork
or pet themed baskets, there’s
something for
everyone. New this
year is a child’s
birthday party at
the shelter where
the children get to
interact with some of
the PCHS residents
up close. Can’t
make the event? You
can still help the
animals that come
through our doors.
Become a member
of PCHS by sending a donation of $25
for an individual or $35 for a family.
Membership includes newsletters
and mailings throughout the year
on happenings at the shelter. A
small donation of $10 pays for a bag
of cat food, while larger donations
($75 -$100) pay for neuter and spay
services. No amount is too small
when helping to care for lost or
abandoned cats and dogs. Donations
can be directed to the general fund,
spay/neuter fund, emergency fund
or the mortgage reduction campaign.
Donations can be mailed, dropped off
or submitted online to http://www.
pawsandclaws.org/wpweb/how-tohelp/donations/. Follow PCHS on
our website(www.pawsandclaws.

Twitter (@PCHSRochester). This is the
best way to get updates on adoptable
animals, adoption stories, shelter
needs and activities. Stay in touch
and make a difference in the life of a

Forever Family
H
elp wanted looking for FOREVER
families for our dogs and cats! Do you
think you have what it takes to be a
forever family for a cat or dog? Just
what is a forever family, you ask? A forever family
provides shelter, food, medical care, and most
importantly, a lifetime of love for a furry family
member. Many dogs can live for 15 years or beyond
while many cats can live for 20 or more years. That
would be a commitment for 20+ years of providing
them with a home. Make sure you are planning that
a pet can remain with you for all of your expected
life changes.
Paws and Claws Humane Society (PCHS) is
looking for great homes in which our animals
can find their FOREVER family. Are you ready to
make a lifetime commitment to a furry friend? If
so, we are ready to have you come in and meet the
love of your life! Our animals are current on their
vaccinations and are spayed or neutered prior to
adoption. Upon visiting, we will ask you to fill out
a short questionnaire that provides us with basic
information about your home and the type of traits
you are looking for in a prospective new family
member. We have cat and dog adoption counselors
trained to help you find the right dog or cat for
your family and lifestyle. Prior to your visit, you can
check out the animals available for adoption at our
website http://www.pawsandclaws.org/wpweb/
pets/adoptable-pets/.
Want to help but aren’t in the position to adopt?
How about volunteering your time by being a
dog or cat volunteer or working at one of our
fundraisers? The first step to being a volunteer is to
sign up for orientation through the PCHS website.
Financial donations are always welcomed and can
be mailed directly to our shelter or made through
online donations (http://www.pawsandclaws.
org/wpweb/how-to-help/donations/). Take time
to advocate for animals in need and share the
stories and needs of our available animals and
our organization. Adopt, volunteer, donate and
advocate!
We are scheduling tours of our new facility, so
if you have a group who would like to see our
beautiful new facility and learn more about Paws
and Claws, please call and set up an appointment
or email us at [email protected]. Tours allow
us to educate the public about our mission and the
plight of homeless companion animals. Finally —
thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, staff,
and supporters for making our dream become a
reality.
