Teachers and staff recognized for their work
This week has been designated National Teacher/Staff
Appreciation Week. Across the District, our staff
members are honored in various ways by their PTA,
principal, or individual parents. I have written a letter
which will be e-mailed to our staff on Monday morning,
thanking them for the incredible job they do each day. I
also make a concerted effort to personally express my
thanks to them when I am in the buildings. I am truly
honored and humbled to work with such a wonderful
staff.
Be smart … don’t start
Brendan Dickinson, a 5th grader at Roosevelt Elementary
School, won the county-wide DARE poster contest with
his entry, Be Smart … Don’t Start. Officer Mynsberge
from the Port Huron Police Department presented
Brendan with the award on May 2nd. Brendan’s poster
will be displayed on the Lamar billboard at Court and
Military Streets. He is also scheduled to be a guest on
the Paul Miller Show on WPHM at 7:00 am tomorrow
morning.
GED tests to get new format in 2014
On Jan. 1, the General Educational Development, or
GED, test will change to a computer-based test.
Computer-based testing is not “online testing,” but a test
given on a secured computer in the Harrison Center.
The four GED tests will correspond with the National
Core Curriculum. Individuals have until Dec. 13 of this
year to complete and pass the current paper-based GED
tests or they will have to start over with the new
computer-based test. Please contact the Harrison

FOOD AND NUTRITION: Director for Food Services
Mary Kurkowski will be a co-presenter at a May 23
conference, Transforming School Nutrition – Together.
Her topic: “Strengthening the Food Service Program
Financially.” The Lansing conference is sponsored by
the Michigan School Business Officials and the School
Nutrition Association of Michigan.
BOARD MEETING: The next meeting of the Board of
Education is Monday, May 20 in the McKinley building,
beginning at 7 p.m.

Little Black Dress event supports
cancer programs at Port Huron
Hospital
The auxiliaries of Port Huron Hospital and St.
Joseph Mercy Port Huron, along with the Kearns
family, presented the 2013 Betty Kearns Little Black
Dress fundraiser Friday, April 19 at Alexander’s
Banquet Center in Marysville.
Following the death of their mom, Betty Kearns,
from breast cancer, her family wanted to do
something in her memory that would help others
with breast cancer. The result was the Little Black
Dress event, a fundraiser first held in 2007 to
benefit local cancer services. It has been held
annually since. The auxiliaries of both Port Huron
Hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron joined
the Kearns family in 2012 to coordinate the event.
Following the fundraiser, the Kearns family
presented Port Huron Hospital with a check for
$12,500 to help support breast cancer programs in
Women’s Wellness Place and specifically to help
fund the hospital’s American Cancer Society Look
Good, Feel Better program. To learn more about

Port Huron Hospital to celebrate National Nurses Week May 6-12
Every year, National Nurses Week focuses attention on the diverse ways America's 3.1 million registered
nurses work to save lives and to improve the health of millions of individuals. On Monday, May 6, Port
Huron Hospital will join the American Nurses Association (ANA) in celebrating Florence Nightingale’s
birthday, annually the first day of the national weeklong observation. Florence Nightingale is recognized as
the founder of nursing as a modern profession.
Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with
varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers. Nurses
have many roles – from staff nurse to educator to nurse practitioner to administrative leadership– serving
all of them with passion for the profession and with a strong commitment to patient safety.
The purpose of the week celebration is to raise awareness of the value of nursing and help educate the
public about the role nurses play in meeting the health care needs of the American people.
EATING RIGHT, SENIOR STYLE
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in partnership with the St. Clair
County Michigan State Extension Service
Learning to cook for two or less people. This can
result in cooking and wasting too much food. Also,
as aging progresses, your body requires different
nutritional needs; it can be difficult to change your
meals to meet this new need.
To help area seniors learn about nutrition and
cooking, St. Joseph Mercy is pleased to offer,
“Eating Right, Senior Style”, offered in partnership
with the St. Clair County Michigan State Extension
Service.
Through this six-month course, seniors will learn
how to stretch their food budget, how to plan, shop
and cook meals for one or two and how to enhance
food flavor. Seniors will also learn how to make
their kitchen more user-friendly and how to grow
their own in-a-container garden. They will also
participate in food tasting and creating their own
make and take activities.
Beginning June 4, 2013, the six-month program will
be held Tuesdays: June 4, July 2, Aug. 6,
Sept. 3, Oct. 1, Nov. 5, 2013 from 11 to 12 p.m., in
the First floor conference room at St. Joseph Mercy
Hospital, 2601 Electric Avenue in Port Huron.
“Eating Right, Senior Style” requires a commitment
to attend all classes. Participants will receive a
MSU certificate and graduation celebration with
gifts to those who complete the series.

Citizens for a Vibrant Community is pleased to
announce the return of the Michigan Vietnam
Veterans Traveling Memorial to Art on the River, June
8th and 9th, 2013 on the banks of the Black River and
Quay Street in Downtown Port Huron.
What is the Michigan Vietnam Veteran Traveling
Memorial? It is a Memorial to the Men and Women
from Michigan who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.
It’s a message saying “We Will Not Forget” those who
did not come home from Southeast Asia and are
listed as a Prisoner of War or Missing in Action. It is a
place for those who have served to come together in
remembrance of their fellow Soldier, Marine, Seaman,
Airman, and Coast Guardsman. It is a place to honor
those who have received the Flag as the words “on
behalf of a proud and grateful nation,” have been
spoken.
The Michigan Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial
will arrive in the Blue Water Area on the morning of
June 8th. There will be a motorcycle and police
escort, to bring the Memorial in to Port Huron. Legion
Riders will be assisted by the St. Clair County
Sheriff’s Department, Marysville Police Department
and Port Huron Police and Fire Departments in
escorting the Memorial to the Art on the River event
site. They will travel from Marysville starting around
8:10 a.m., heading south on Gratiot. They will
continue onto Military (along the river front) and head
into Port Huron on Military, reaching the Art on the
River event site around 8:45 a.m.
We encourage anyone who would like to view this
amazing procession to be along the route by 8:00
a.m. to pay your respects as they head to Art on the
River. They will set up and a ceremony for the
Memorial will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. There
will be several dignitaries in attendance to welcome
the Memorial to Port Huron.
The Michigan Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial
will stay at Art on the River for the entire weekend.
Citizens For A Vibrant Community present rifles to Memorial Day Parade
On Wednesday, May 1, 2013, Citizens for a Vibrant Community were proud to present four ceremonial rifles to the
parade committee for the Memorial Day Parade at the Charles Schoor VFW Post 796 in Port Huron. These guns will
be used by the Allied Veterans Color Guard in the Memorial Day parade as well as other Veterans Ceremonies
where the colors will be posted at the beginning and retired at the end. of our freedoms.
The Memorial Day parade will be on Monday, May 27, 2013 and will begin at 11 a.m. It is CVCs hope that the people
of our area will come out to honor all the veterans and those currently serving in the Military.
