WE ALL KNOW SINGING MAKES US FEEL GOOD AND PEOPLE
LOVE NZ MUSIC MONTH SO WHY NOT GET EVERYONE
SINGING TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE?
Now in it’s second year Hook-Line and Sing-a-long is a celebration of the budding young songwriters found in our nation’s
schools as well as reminding us of the fundamental joy of singing. At the end of 2010 we called for students to submit their songs
into a competition with the winner having their song picked to be the song we all sing at the culmination of NZ Music Month.
The winning song ‘Things To Remember - Huarahi Tika’ was penned by students at Te Rumaki O Te Uru Karaka
(Newton Central Primary School). The students have since been reunited and worked with Tama Waipara and
Tonga Vaea (Spacifix, 3 Houses Down) and the 2010 NZ Music Month song winner – Stevii Hill
(now at Auckland University) to prepare and record the song for Music Month in May.
We urge you all to take up the challenge and sing ‘Things To Remember - Huarahi Tika’ at the conclusion of Music Month,
on May 31st at 12 noon. Music improves a child’s literacy and numeracy skills, teaches social confidence and participation,
demands children think for themselves, creates a sense of belonging to community and culture – music touches us every day.
So get involved, get your students involved and let’s all sing ‘Things To Remember’ come noon May 31st.
– Errol Moore - President MENZA & Stephanie Lees - Education Manager NZMC
Hook, Line and Sing-A-long is facilitated by the NZ Music Commission in conjunction with the music teachers professional
group MENZA with thanks to all the teachers, students and schools who embrace music as a teaching tool.
