But this year was different- I finally had ‘that day’ We arrived at the start and after numerous “I’ll be back I’m just going to the loo again” they finally closed the pens, dropped the tape and comrades 2016 was starting. We were pushed and shoved and ended up starting at the D batch board Al and I held hands, wiped away tears as we sang along to the anthem, shozaloza, chariots of fire. Then the cock crowed, the gun went and Comrades 2016 had officially started!! We crossed the line in 5minutes 47seconds , waved for the camera’s and dodged the cats eyes as we trotted out of PMB. We both had a really good run until about 15km or so when Al started to feel tired. After the Lion park cut off, at about 22km she told me to go on ahead. I told her to catch me, and off I went. Only after about a km or so did I realise that this meant that I was running comrades, on my own. Nicci, who doesn’t even run a 5km on her own! I decided then, that I would get this medal, and finish race, if it meant I had to crawl the last few kilometres. And as each kilometre passed I realised more and more that I was doing this, on my own and with no nausea. Suddenly I was at half way, after some cramping coming down Inchanga, passing Arthurs seat, passing the Comrades wall and then climbing the hill with no name up to Phezulu At the bottom of Botha’s hill I saw Al on the side of the road- she had to bail as she wasn’t well. And after a juice and a hug from her, I must admit my heart was a little broken for her and I did shed a tear or two as I walked up the dreaded heart break hill! This year the nausea set in at about 30km to go. I kept telling myself I had run this race twice, feeling nauseous from 30km in- so I could do this. I soon realised that I wasn’t going to get my bronze, and after a few failed maths attempts worked out that I would definitely finish, I just had to keep going Keep going to the next stop, to the next ice lolly, liquid fruit and salt and vinegar chips! You all know who you are- and I wouldn’t have gotten through this race without knowing that you were waiting for me, along the road and then at the finish I finished comrades 2016 in 11:41:29, and loved it! I hit the wall, cried and was sick. But I finally had that day- the day everyone talks about. Where you hear the crowd shouting for you. Where you meet the most amazing people. Where you are so sore, and so tired, but so so damn happy that you have made it another kilometre. I will be back to conquer the up run and to get my Bronze medal. But for now I am so so happy and proud that I did it- I had THAT day! 5 6 7 8
