INTRODUCTION TO HEYTHROP
Heythrop College is a unique and fascinating place to study. The only
specialist college of Philosophy and Theology in the UK and with a
400-year history, students benefit from expert teaching from leading
academics in their field, in an environment shaped by a long tradition
of academic excellence.
With just under 1000 students we take
an individual approach to teaching and
supporting our students. Regular one-toone tutorials are commonplace at Heythrop
and a range of support services is in place
to enable students to achieve their potential,
including study skills, pastoral care and
support with learning difficulties. This
support is facilitated through the College’s
Personal Tutor system whereby all students
are allocated a member of staff with whom
they can meet regularly to discuss their
progress both academic and personal.
Heythrop has a long history of welcoming
students from around the world and as a
UKBA Highly Trusted Sponsor currently has
students from over 35 different countries. As
well as being part of the close-knit Heythrop
community you would be joining London’s
enormous student population whose 102 000
international students make up a quarter
of all people studying in London. People
from every nation have come to call London
their home, resulting in the rich tapestry of
cultures which makes up the wonderfully
vibrant city Heythrop calls home.

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON
Heythrop is one of the eighteen self-governing colleges which together form
the University of London. The University attracts students from all parts of the
UK and across the globe, offering an encyclopaedic range of degrees in one of
the world’s most vibrant cities.
Founded in 1836 the University of London is
the third-oldest university in England and
has at its head Anne, Her Royal Highness
the Princess Royal, as its Chancellor. It has
a student population of over 120 000, with a
further 45 000 students studying by distance
learning all around the world. The colleges
and institutes of the University have one of the
most culturally diverse student populations in
the world and offer an unparalleled range of
qualifications and opportunities for study.
Students often choose Heythrop because
it offers an inclusive, small, cohesive and
specialist learning environment. Normally
all your classes will be at Heythrop,
though there are occasional opportunities
to take a module at another University of
London college. The Heythrop library is
an exceptionally rich resource, but as a
University of London student you also have
access to the University Library at Senate
House and the employability advice and
guidance provided by the University of
London Careers Service, in addition to that
which is already on offer at Heythrop. Some
students apply to live in the University’s
Intercollegiate Halls in order to mix more
with those studying other subjects (for more
information on accommodation options
please turn to page 12). You also have access
to the wide range of social and sporting
resources of the University of London Union
in Bloomsbury (see pages 10 & 11 for more
about the extra-curricular opportunities
available to Heythrop students).

LIVING AND STUDYING
IN LONDON
As one of the most cosmopolitan capitals in
the world London is an exhilarating place to
live and study. The cultural and educational
opportunities available to London’s many
students are unrivalled and limitless. It is
a city steeped in history but with a fastpaced and modern outlook. Teeming with
the best the UK has to offer in galleries,
music, museums, food, shopping, fashion,
theatre, comedy, dance and sport there
is something for everyone and always
something going on. Parks and green
spaces make up over 40% of the capital
providing ample opportunities to escape
the busy streets.
The local area
Heythrop College is situated in quiet and
leafy Kensington Square, the oldest garden
square in London. Heythrop has many
vibrant and distinguished neighbours in
the Royal Borough of Kensington and
Chelsea including Kensington Palace, the
family home of the young royal couple the
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and the
museum district containing the Natural
History, Victoria & Albert and Science
Museums and the Royal Albert Hall.
The College being a mere stone’s throw
from the bustling Kensington High Street
students have instant access to a wide
range of shops, restaurants and bars, and
a short walk across Hyde Park brings you
straight into London’s lively West End.

HEYTHROP COLLEGE
STUDENTS’ UNIONS AND ACTIVITIES
As a Heythrop student, you are automatically a member of Heythrop
Students’ Union (HSU), as well as the University of London Union (ULU)
and the UK National Union of Students (NUS). The HSU is managed by
a team of executive officers, elected annually by the student body, and
headed up by a President and Vice President, who have completed their
degrees or have taken a year out in order to fill a full-time position.
10
A Guide for International Students
The Union represents the student voice
on the College’s governmental boards and
committees as well as organizing events
throughout the year. The Heythrop social
calendar stretches from Freshers’ Week all
the way through to the annual Summer Ball,
which is often held at exclusive and unusual
venues such as London Zoo, Shakespeare’s
Globe and the Waldorf Hotel thanks to the
smaller size of the student body.
We offer a wide range of activities such as
drama, dance, art, debating, martial arts,
meditation, film and choir. If however you
can’t find a society you like the look of, you
can easily start your own! We also have two
sports teams: football and cricket. The HSU
manages student space in the basement
of the College, the main feature of which is
the brand new College bar, the hub of the
Heythrop student social life.
The Lion, the Heythrop student newspaper,
is produced entirely by students and
provides a fantastic forum for debate,
information and expression. All of our
students can write for The Lion, and those
that are particularly interested can work
towards joining its editorial board. Find out
more at www.theheythroplion.co.uk
The HSU is there to help you, represent you,
support you and to entertain you throughout
your time at Heythrop.
Feel free to call us on
+44 (0) 207 795 4215 or email the President at
[email protected] for more information.

All Heythrop students have access to ULU
societies and all the facilities available at
the ULU building on Malet Street, such
as meeting space, legal advice, careers
service, gym and swimming pool. Heythrop
students also have access to the bars and
clubs at Imperial College Union, and can
join any of their societies for an affiliation
fee of £5. As a member of the NUS
students can get involved in the national
student movement. It is a chance to have
your voice heard in a wider political context
and have the opportunity to participate in
nationwide campaigns.

HEYTHROP COLLEGE
ACCOMMODATION
Alban Hall
The Alban Hall of Residence is our on-site
student accommodation, located on our
campus in Kensington just a short stroll
across the garden from the main building.
The Hall’s location in the heart of Kensington
is one of its main advantages as it offers the
opportunity to live in one of London’s most
exclusive neighbourhoods for a fraction of
the price of privately rented accommodation.
Students living onsite also make a substantial
financial saving on travel costs. All rooms are
spacious single study bedrooms. With around
100 residents there is a strong sense of
community within the Hall which ensures you
get to know a large proportion of the student
body very quickly.
Heythrop’s Alban Hall of Residence offers:
• 109 single study bedrooms
• on-site accommodation
• a catered package
• a shared kitchen and dining room
on every floor
• free internet access in every room
• a member of staff available 24 hours a day
• provision for mobility impaired students
Intercollegiate Halls
Heythrop is also allocated a small number
of rooms in the University of London’s
Intercollegiate Halls. This is a great
opportunity to meet, live and socialize with
students studying all kinds of different
subjects at the other University of London
Colleges, and to become familiar with
another part of the city. Heythrop students
12
are generally placed in Nutford House
(Marble Arch/Edgware Road). There are
single and twin rooms available in these
halls. More information about the various
intercollegiate options can be found at
www.halls.london.ac.uk/student
Private accommodation
If you do not wish to live in halls from
the first year, help is available in finding
accommodation. The University of
London Accommodation Office website
www.lon.ac.uk/accom offers a good deal of
advice and information about different areas
of London, and links to some private halls.
Housing costs can be much cheaper further
from Central London, though obviously
travel costs are higher.
In the first instance all queries should
be made to the Campus Services office.
They can be contacted via email at
[email protected] or
by telephoning +44 (0) 207 795 4163.

Heythrop students, including physical and
mental health, welfare issues and equality
matters such as disability provision. Drop in

a variety of options available to you.

HEYTHROP COLLEGE
HOW TO APPLY
UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATIONS
Applications for full-time undergraduate
study are made via UCAS which is the UK’s
central admissions service for Higher
Education. Applicants should register at
www.ucas.com/apply in order to begin
their application. UCAS allows you to
choose up to five different courses and/or
universities; you are able to apply for more
than one course at the same university.
Heythrop College’s UCAS code is H48, and
codes for our individual courses can be
found on our website and in our prospectus.
The earliest date you can apply for a place
is mid-September in the year preceding
the year of entry. So if you wish to join us
in September 2015, applications can be
made from September 2014 onwards. It is
good to apply early; the UCAS deadline is 15
January of each year and any applications
received after that date will only be
considered if places are still available.
Advice for international applicants can
be found on the UCAS website at
www.ucas.com/international
When you have submitted your application,
UCAS will acknowledge your application
and will forward it to the institutions
you have chosen. You can then track the
progress of your UCAS application by
logging on at www.ucas.com/track and
Heythrop will also keep in contact with you
throughout the application process.
16
When considering your application we
typically look at the following things:
•your academic qualifications – those
already achieved and/or predicted grades
•your motivation to engage intellectually
with the subjects, demonstrated in your
personal statement
•academic reference – we need
information about your academic
development and progress as well
as your level of achievement
We also need to know about any health,
personal or academic problems you have
encountered during your studies. We may
take into account any contextual factors
which have an impact on your academic
performance.
POSTGRADUATE APPLICATIONS
Applications for postgraduate study
are made directly to Heythrop College.
An application form is available on our
website www.heythrop.ac.uk/PGapply

Student Profile
Chloe Westley, BA Philosophy Year 2
Gold Coast, Australia
“The amount of support offered to students by the College is unlike any institution I’ve ever
been a part of. There’s a warmness that greets you as you enter the front door of Heythrop.
In regards to the course itself, I particularly enjoy the wide range of modules we have
covered already, from Ancient Greek philosophy to modern metaphysics.”

HEYTHROP COLLEGE
INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Heythrop College offers high quality education in the centre of London.
We were commended in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency audit
for our academic and pastoral support as with only 1000 students, we
are able to treat each student as an individual and are one of the few
universities still to provide one-to-one tuition.
18
Opportunities for students

international students for all or part
of their study, in particular Junior Year
Abroad & Erasmus students.
