On Oct. 15th our club was trying to find new people to run for the officer positions for next year On Oct. 22 the club worked to organize one of our excursions. The club is going to Haleiwa on Nov. 19th! What a day to look forward to. On Oct. 29 the center looked like a ghost town. Only three members showed up for the meeting. Thank you to Justin and Cookie for helping. We watched a movie and had some cookies. EVENTS: 11/5 - Meeting 11/12 - Meeting 11/19 - Meeting 11/26 - Meeting Continuing from Page 1: As we enter the Holiday Season, I have to remind myself from time to time to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and while it is the time of year that we reflect on our many blessings, soon the traffic will increase (as everyone rushes around to get their holiday shopping done); parking spaces will become scarce; and, situations that might not normally cause us distress will definitely test our patience. It is in those moments that we can consciously make a choice to step back, take a breath, and practice being grateful for all the wonderful gifts in our lives. For example, the healthy relationships that we have with family and friends; having a place to call “home;” and, being physically healthy enough to get up every day and face whatever life brings our way with a positive attitude. “Among the things you can give and still keep are your word, a smile, and a grateful heart,” according to Zig Ziglar. On behalf of the volunteers and staff of the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center, we wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with gratitude! Hawaiian Cultural Club By Mei Newmann Aloha Mai Kakou! I’m sure everyone enjoyed our Center’s 45th anniversary celebration. Each club’s display board was just beautiful. Lots of talent was put into it. We are looking forward to having lunch at Makino Chaya on Nov. 18th. Show and Sell is coming up on Nov. 25th. We are having Ono Hawaiian plate lunches to sell again with pickled onion. At our last meeting, Janette Miyashiro showed us how to make cut out square small containers from brown paper sacks. It’s handy--you can put cards and things in it. Ask her and she’ll show you how to make one, too. We sometimes have guessing games and the person with the winning guess receives a prize. One of the questions was, “What is the tallest mountain in Africa?” Someone answered, “Mauna Kea,” which at 13,000 ft. is the tallest mountain in Hawai‘i. Florence Marushige called out Mt. Kilimanjero, which was correct. Hawaiian Proverb: An `alo`iloe`a fish of the reef that has a small mouth. Often said when referring to someone who has little to say. EVENTS: 11/4 - Election Day 11/11 - Veterans Day 11/18 - Club Lunch 11/25 - Show and Sell Japanese Cultural Club by Judi Yogi A Japanese tradition, Shichi-Go-San (7-5-3 Festival) is celebrated on November 15th. Girls age seven and three, and boys age five and three, dressed in beautiful traditional clothing (kimono for girls, haori jackets and hakama pants for boys), are then taken to their local shrine and blessed by a priest for continued good health and happiness. They then receive special sweets called chitoseame, or “long life candy”. The candy is shaped in long sticks and comes in bags decorated with cranes and turtles, animals that symbolize long life. For those of us who rarely have the opportunity to go to the movie theaters, you are in for a treat. Join us for a hilarious and heartfelt 2-part video entitled: “Hula Girls”. The setting of this movie takes place in a small coal miners town in Japan, showcasing a group of Japanese school girls who were determined to learn the art and skills of Hula. After suffering a great deal of anguish and tears, the girls eventually accomplished the art of Hula, became stellar performers, and made their parents proud, content and happy. Hula is very popular today not only in Hawai‘i but also in Japan and all over the world, thereby encouraging Kumu Hulas from Hawai‘i to establish Halaus in other countries. Part II will be viewed on November 10th. Continuing on with the November calendar of events, our birthday celebrants will be entertained by a wonderful group of talented performers called the Na Kupuna O’Makua Alii. And under the direction of Lorraine Stringfellow, they will grace our stage with fun-filled songs and dances. Shizue Kakazu and Tokiko Suda, our special guests of honor, will celebrate their 90+ birthday along with other members who will also be celebrating their birthday in November. EVENTS: 11/3 – Hula Girls Part I 11/10 – Hula Girls Pat II 11/17 – Birthdays 11/24 – Indoor Picnic Okinawan Nenchosha Club by Irene Yamashita Brain Gymn, anyone? It was something new for many of us that we could “push some buttons” and wake up our brains in the morning. On Oct. 2, Brandi Ching and Consultant Cindy Ogata from Kaiser Permanente took us through some exercises to help us “wake up” in the morning. Special emphasis was made on how important it is to drink enough water during the day to prevent dehydration. The Pearl City Paranku Club of Hawaii entertained us on Oct. 9 with a fantastic variety show. The performers and dancers led us in some line dances after their performance of paranku numbers, Okinawa dances, hula and a sing-along, ending with “Mi Hi Yu”, an audience favorite. October birthdays were celebrated on Oct. 16 with Masato Matsui (94) and Grace Kikuyama (92) occupying the seats of honor. God bless all 11 birthday celebrants with good health and many more happy birthdays. A special birthday program was presented by Sensei Marion Arakaki and her outstanding Karaoke singers. Hana Hou! On Oct. 23, Feli Caballero and Kristine Cabudol from Kupuna Care Hawaii, spoke on Alzheimer’s disease and distributed a Safety Checklist which may be a valuable tool. Research and preparation is important as there are various options available to keep costs down. Mahalo to the Hui Mele Ukuele group of the Nuuanu Baptist Church who entertained us on Oct. 30. The program started with a sing-along of old familiar songs, followed by solo numbers, hulas, and ended with the audience participating in dancing Asatoya Yunta. “You never diminish yourself when you praise another.” ….Bill Simmons Events: 11/6-UH Nursing Fair (No Okinawa Club Meeting) 11/13-Nelson Yoshioka 11/20-Birthday/Hui Laulima 11/27-Thanksgiving Holiday November 2014 Sun Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri Sat 1 FCCH (8:30 am) WWII Filipino Vets (8:30 am) Sewing Room Remember: Your VOTE counts! 2 3 Creative Writing (8 am) Annex Blood Pressure (9 am) 4 HOLIDAY Elections Day Center is Closed 5 Gourmet Lunch Club: Okonomiyaki Chibo in Waikiki 6 UHM Nursing Students’ Health Fair (8:30 am) Blood Pressure (9 am) 7 Movie Matinee: Epic (10:30 am) Sewing Room 8 9 10 Blood Pressure (9 am) Cooking Demo: Nutritious Sides (11:30) Activity Rm 11 HOLIDAY Veterans Day: Center is Closed 12 Program Comm.
