As we finish off this Fall issue of Ausblick and recap the summers events, we are also working on an AGM Edition that will be in the mail to you at the beginning of November. How time flies. We still have a few events on our agenda so here are some quick updates for you on what activities we still have planned: Oct 20, 2001 Fahrt Ins Blaue Day trip for fun Do you enjoy scenic day trips? Do you enjoy the company of fellow BMW enthusiasts? Well then, this is a day for you. Saturday Oct 20 is the date for our Fall Fahrt Ins Blaue. Fahrt Ins Blaue is German and literally means Trip into the blue. In our context we mean it to be a day trip of sight-seeing and exploring that ends in a fun social lunch gathering. Unlike other Fahrt Ins Blaue trips where we don't release the trip info and destination for the day, we'll whet your appetite for this event by telling you that it involves some scenic roads in the Fraser Valley, and includes a destination stop at a major fish spawning channel that should be teaming with spawning salmon. Great roads, great outing for the family, and we'll end the day at a fun restaurant in Mission BC that has a car theme and great food (not to mention the great brews they create on site). The day starts with a gathering of the cars from 10 am to 10:30 am at Guildford north lot (105 Ave. at 152 St. next to the Chevron) Departure time is 10:30 am so be there before then. We expect our lunch stop will be at about 1:30 pm or so. The trip involves about 190 km of roads. Join us for a fun day out. (Rain or Shine) Now accepting nominations for Board of Directors (until Oct 27) The BMW Car Club of BC is managed by a democratically elected board of directors. These directors serve two year terms and at each annual general meeting approximately half of the directors terms expire and come up for renewal or new directors can be elected. If you have an interest in the activities of the club, or know of a member who might want to serve as a director, or a volunteer for events and other goings on in the club, now is the time to come forward. If you would like to volunteer, or would like to nominate a member that would like to serve, please let us know. This can be done by contacting one of the members of the nominating committee which is set up each year to seek out volunteers and talent. This years nominating committee consists of: Aaron Bohnen <[email protected]> Derek Penrice <[email protected]> Last day for nominations: October 27, 2001 More info is available on the club web site. Oct 27, Driving School - Collision Avoidance Our driving schools are all about safety and fun. I know it sounds like a bit of a contradiction but it is not. The Collision Avoidance School is an excellent way to get to know your car and to sharpen your skills. This is a full one day course that covers everything from basic theory to proper techniques, and most important of all it is a full day of hands on learning in your own car. Even people who have been drivers for years have come away from this course with new skills and techniques. The skills and techniques that will better enable you to be a safer driver and enjoy your vehicle more. Our schools are run and taught by the professionals at Driving Unlimited, who themselves are driving enthusiasts. They put on a special program for our club that results in a great day of driving skills enhancement. To put the total package together we bring in a catered lunch. All this for the price of only $150 Volume 4 no 5 Fall 2001 CDN. Wow. Space is limited to 24 participants so you get lots of seat time and practice time. We do have a minimum need for 22 to make the session feasible. Please sign up early. If you are interested, contact Rolf Drommer by email at <[email protected]> or at 604671-5843. We currently are 1/3 booked. Reserve your spot early. Full details are on the web site. Nov 10, Driving School - Advanced Skills (yes it’s a Saturday) Once you have done the entry level Collision Avoidance course you may want to work on more skills that are appropriate for touring or road driving. Or you may just want a day of practice. Well we have the course for you. Again taught by the folks at driving Unlimited we have a full day session of Advanced Skills Driving at Mission Raceway Park. This is not a race or lapping day, but an excellent chance to work on advanced skills. Depending on enrollment the groups will be split up by experience so that all participants get maximum satisfaction out of the day. With a limit of 24 participants you are assured of plenty of seat time for the cost. Catered lunch is included. Because of the higher facility rental cost, the cost of this session is $250 day CDN. And for a change it is on a Saturday. Sign up early, space is limited. If you are interested, contact Rolf Drommer by email at <[email protected]> or at 604-671-5843. Full details on web site. Nov 24, 2001 Annual General Meeting Advance notice Yes it is that time of year again. This is your first official advance notice of the 2001 Annual General Meeting of the BMW Car Club of BC. The date is Saturday November 24, 2001. The location will be the Best Western Inn and Convention Center on North Road in Coquitlam. Registration and check in from 1:00 pm Continued on page 6 Ausblick 5 BMW Car Club of British Columbia The Road Ahead Continued from page 5 until 2:00 pm Meeting at 2:00 pm there no cost to attend. Bring your member ID. Agenda will include reports of previous year, election of directors (5 come up for renewal this year) and the vote to affiliate with the newly formed BMW Club Canada, as well as housekeeping on our own bylaws. Be sure to plan to attend. Coffee and cookies will be available while you watch some of Thomas Fink's great events coverage videos during check in. A voting package and full AGM details will be mailed at the beginning of November. Dec 8, 2001 Christmas Party and Dinner Social The last two years we have enjoyed a fun social get together to celebrate the holiday season. This year will be no different. We have booked the Old Bavaria Haus in New Westminster for the evening of Saturday December 8. Come and enjoy a great Bavarian theme dinner and enjoy some seasonal social fun with fellow club members. Expected price for meal gratuities and some surprises is about $30 per person exclusive of alcoholic beverages. Plan now for this fun event. More information will be on the web and in upcoming newsletter and emails. We have space for up to 65 folks and need a minimum of about 45 to make it a viable event. Of Special Interst - Meeting of the 8 Series Folks Northwest area E31 8 Series owners & fans meet September 8th in Seattle Local club member and 8 series enthusiast Derek Pinton along with one of the fellows from Seattle, and one from Portland organized this event. We decided that the Pacific Northwest owners should attempt to get together once in a while to discuss our cars and promote the 8's. They had an excellent turnout of 10 8’s plus the 507 attend the luncheon in Seattle on Sept. 8th. They reserved a restaurant for just their group so they can talk about 8's without disturbing anyone else. One of our objectives is to assemble more cars than the record eleven set last year by a group called the Bay Area 8's in California. They came very close. During the get together owners firmed up our plans for a big 8 Series run down to Oktober Fest in Colorado in the summer of 2002. The event is expected to attract over 700 BMW's from all over North America and we expect the largest ever collection of 8's to be on hand. At this stage it looks like we'll have at least 3 cars from the Vancouver area making the journey. For more info contact Derek Pinton <[email protected]> or visit the 8 series E31 enthusiasts web site <http://clube31.multimania.com/> We always welcome newsletter submissions We are always working on the next newsletter and always welcome your submissions. Stories, humor, how to tips, photos, you name it, we are always looking for member content that has a BMW slant and might be of interest to you the members. Send in your submissions by email or snail mail. <[email protected]> For more info on each of the events visit our web site at: <http://www .bmwccbc.org/> for additional details. 6 Ausblick David Gray Broker Partner Zurich Canada 700 - 375 Water Street Vancouver, B.C. Now we have three more schools lined up for you this fall. Plan early to attend one of these schools. They are educational and fun, and will help you be a better safer driver. Fall Oct 9 Oct 20 Nov 10 Portland Road Course Driving School, Portland Participation in the Portland course is only for those who have completed both Collision Avoidance and Advanced Skills. The session fills up quickly. Collision Avoidance School, Boundary Bay This is our introductory full day course open to all. Advanced Skills School, Mission Builds on the skills in Collision Avoidance which is a required pre requisite. The BMW Car Club of BC's philosophy of safe driving is that the driver is the main ingredient for success regardless of what modifications are made to the car. We encourage all drivers to take advantage of the driving schools we offer. Our driving schools help you learn the skills and techniques needed to become a smooth, safe, good driver, and at the same time offer you the ability to explore the capabilities of your vehicle. Here are the details of the remaining courses planned for this year: Portland Road Course for Advanced Drivers You can learn a lot from theory and our two entry level schools, but there is no doubt that being able to practice will improve your skills even more. The Portland Road Course day gives you the opportunity to hone some basic skills in a safe controlled environment. Sessions available as demand dictates - cost approx $250 day per driver plus travel costs. Our entry level course is called Collision Avoidance. This is a full day course that starts with the technical jargon and concepts behind safe driving, then we move to the field with our cars and the instructors. The day progresses through a variety of braking car control and avoidance maneuvers. Excellent for skills development, safe and fun. Open to all. Fall 2001 Session October - cost $150 day per driver Our Advanced course is called Advanced Driving Skills. We hold this course at locations such as Mission Raceway Park. It is mandatory that participants take the Collision Avoidance basic course first. This is a full day session that is aimed at working on all the skill levels required to be a safe driver. The facility at Mission offers the ability to work on a variety of skills that relate directly to safe effective control of a vehicle under all conditions. Some restrictions apply. This is not an opportunity to race, it is a coached day of learning the fine points of vehicle dynamics and control of same in order to effect a safe enjoyable driving experience. Fall Session as enrollment allows - Cost $250 day per driver Volume 4 no 5 Fall 2001 Ausblick 7 BMW Car Club of British Columbia Project 507 - Restoration of a true classic Project 507 (Part 2) It has been some time since we started restoring the 1959 507. A lot has been learned. Most important was how one can never be too careful when choosing a restoration shop. We unfortunately had to pull the car from the first shop, literally hours before the local bailiff sealed the doors due to foreclosure. Not only did we rescue the 507 but also on the same trip we pulled my 1959 600 Limo from the shop. I wish I could find the pictures of the 600 and 507 sharing the same trailer deck; it was quite a site. Fortunately for us, we stripped the cars ourselves. Other customers lost many of the parts that were removed from their cars at the shop. We had all ours safe at home. We did however lose our deposits for work that was never done. The car is now at a small restoration shop in Burnaby called “Better Bods”. This is a one-man operation and so far he has proved to very good. He is taking extreme care to detail and actually meets the time deadlines that are asked of him. The car’s underside and engine compartment are now completely done and painted. Thanks to Wray Nixon for letting us use his shop to fit the engine into the car. This was done so that once the body of the car is painted, we don’t have to risk fender or paint damage shoe horning the V8 into it’s home under the hood. This also proved to be a learning experience. Wray walks by and casually says that it might be a good idea to put a jack under the transmission when we scoop the engine in. Should have listened. Just when we thought the engine was nicely in place, we lifted the car to fasten the transmission bolts. Two hours later the engine was refitted for the third time. This time we managed to get the transmission high enough with a floor jack so that it went in ABOVE the frame cross member. 8 Ausblick Something I will always remember for the next time I am fitting an engine to someone’s 507. Currently (no pun intended) the wiring harness and all the electric’s are being completely stripped cleaned and resorted, ready for fitting when the car returns with it’s new paint. As an Electronics Technologist, I can appreciate the thought that went into the design of this car’s wiring. Usually when I get involved in the restoration of a car I must correct design errors in the factory wiring to improve reliability. So far I have not found any need to do this on the 507. The 507 is truly the epitome of automobile design for its era. If all goes as planned this car will been seen at a BMW Car Club of BC event soon. Some detail views attest to the work that was put into this restoration Drum brakes and suspension detail Dave Beddows yes, that is where the dash goes As you can see from photos in this issue of Ausblick, the 507 made its first post restoration debut at Member Day, and went on to participate and win in class at the Concours Before: The 507 in stripped form ready for updating. We had a great turn out of some 30 members who were treated to goodies and a wide variety of information. Julia, Kevin, Rejan, Joe and Nadine introduced themselves and what they do. After an entertaining BMW M Power movie, the skills of the members were tested with various BMW trivia questions. We had a knowledgable group, and lots of hats, mugs and other goodies were handed out to those that answered correctly. Rejan then led an informal tech and question and answer session, and in true car enthusiast form, the discussion ended up in fragments, with pros and cons about what kind of oil to use, and other miscellaneous bits of information. Member Day July 8, 2001 We held our first ever member day on Sunday July 8th at Auto West BMW in Richmond. We had a great day of sunshine, with an excellent member drop in excess of 60. Our Route took us I5/Chuckanut, through Edison and Bayview along Padilla Bay to Hwy20 where we were joined by Bill in his 7 series, having found his missing wallet in the legion hall (another story perhaps), and on to Whidbey and Deception Pass for our first stop. Chris joined us in his 635Csi at Deception, having been hung up at the border, and Rick and Cheryl Brown from Puget Sound CCA chapter in their M3. After a brief photo op on the Deception Pass bridges we departed for a “quick” coffee stop at the visitors centre to solve Mary-Ann’s coffee craving. Combination of one person and a single latte’ machine turned that into a 40 minutes and counting stop, so we pulled the plug and hit the road again, now 16 cars strong. Down the twisty roads on the North West side of Whidbey, with a rest stop and Kodak moment at Fort Casey State Park and on into Coupeville for lunch at the Captains Galley, with time for a wander around the rustic old seaport of Coupeville. Dave Clary from Puget Sound CCA joined us here with his lovely 850. After lunch some of the group took the option of the South Island drive, with the majority heading North, through Oak Harbor and along the winding roads of the North East side of the Island, finishing up back on Hwy 20 just South of Decep- tion Pass. From here the overnight group went South down the Island to the motel, while the day group headed North for the return trip home. We had a total of 12 folks for the overnight, with a terrific evening at Bush Point Restaurant, on the water watching the shipping traffic transiting Admiralty Inlet. We called it a night around 22:00 on what had been a long but fun day. Sunday morning, breakfast for the hungry at the Knead and Feed, before we headed out from the motel for the South Island drive. Great roads South got us to Greenbank Winery and the Loganberry festival for Mary-Ann’s coffee stop, then back on the road into Langley, another neat little town, for a brief sight see. photos courtesy Jim Westmacott Mary Anne did get her coffee Fort Casey 3, 6, 7 and 8 series... ...where are the 5’s and others ...in the other picture of course talking about cars not doubt Jim gets into the conversation as well just what was Mary Anne explaining? the overnight crew on day two... ...enjoying the view from Jane’s deck 14 Ausblick Volume 4 no 5 Fall 2001 BMW Car Club of British Columbia Heading out of Langley we had arguably the best roads of the trip, with plenty of hills and curves, but wet, which kept the pace sensible. Back to Jane’s house for BBQ by 13:00 where right on queue the rain quit, and we were able to enjoy the front yard views and eat, drink and be merry outdoors. Afternoon showers brought a halt to proceedings but by then it was time to call it a day and head up Bush Point road, Hwy 20 and home. Good time was had by all and as usual it’s all our great members who come out and make these events so much fun. Cheers - Jim Westmacott Many thanks to Jim Westmacott and Jane Helten for doing the route planning and coordinating this event so our member could have a fun trip. Boeing Plant Private Tour - August 6, 2001 There is never a lot of photo coverage of the annual Boeing Tour. This is in part due to the fact Boeing does not let us take photos during the tour. Despite that we manage to have a fun day. We had a turn out of some 49 members, including family members, in 22 cars that showed up bright and early at the Custer Rest Stop on I-5 to assemble for the drive to the plant in Everett. Despite leaving a few minutes late, we arrived at the Boeing plant right on time at 10 am and I’m sure we made an impressive sight for the tour guides and bus driver as 22 cars swept into the parking lot in formation. Digital photos by Larry Myers (Custer Rest Stop), Jane Helten (group photo) and Jim Westmacott (lunch shots) Many thanks to the folks at Boeing for hosting this our third trip to their plant, and to Jim Westmacott for the connections and making the trip possible. sign in and drivers meeting the M cars alwasy get attention M Coupe and M Roadster visit our web site www.bmwccbc.org Event Photos As you can tell from our newsletter and web site coverage of events, a lot of pictures get taken. Jamie from Olympia was napping, and Thomas and his friend were getting ready to take pictures. In the next few minutes cars started to roll into the parking lot. As I looked around I realized the Chevron Station on the corner was gone. Argh. So much for that convenient location and landmark. Despite that cars kept arriving. Soon we had 14 cars ready for the 4th Duffey Lake Road Tour, including 4 from Washington State who obviously wanted to get some of our spectacular BC scenery for the weekend. The line up included 2 M6’s, an M3 cabrio, Derek’s 850, Bill in his 7 series and a few more 3 and 5 series cars. Quite impressive. The weather was great, and by 8:30 we held the driver’s meeting and the group was off. Reports are that day one went well, with some trying to enjoy the scenery while others were intent on enjoying the roads. Day two however brought a challenge for the group. The group was faced with decisions on Saturday morning. Bill headed out early and got past the fire in one of the few breaks where the road was not closed. Others detoured via Kelowna for lunch, and then headed home via the Coquihalla, while some of the US folks headed to Oliver and the US for their trip back and still others back tracked to Merrit and then headed to the Fraser Canyon for a scenic trip home. ...new Sky Train Station in the background 8:30 am will the driver’s meeting ever be over? E28 Power Steering Reservoir Filter Replacement by Larry Myers member #0146 Hidden at the bottom of the power steering reservoir is a small cylindrical filter that cleans impurities from the power steering fluid. On E28s the power steering fluid is used to provide a boost to the braking system, so two vital systems rely on the contents of the reservoir and the movement of that fluid through hydraulic systems. After 15 years of filtering, one might expect a filter to function at something less than original capacity (my photos show a significant difference between the new and the old filters). The new filter is a medium brown and uniform in appearance, the old filter is a very dark brown and shows signs of deterioration. Symptoms of a tired power steering filter can include a squealing power steering pump and a somewhat slower response on both the steering and the brake boost. A new filter (part # 32 41 1 128 167) can be purchased from the dealer for about $25. Other worthwhile purchases would include a supply of power steering fluid (Dexron III, Automatic Transmission fluid works well – about 40 oz) and a turkey baster for removal of the fluid from the reservoir. The baster you use should never see duty in the kitchen (duh). I also found it handy to have a jar to accept the old fluid, some rags for spills, a magnet, and small hook (fashioned from a piece of coat hanger). The magnet and the hook were used to lift the metal plate that covers the The new filter prior to install filter (the toughest part of the job). The procedure is as follows: 1. Open the reservoir and remove the screen and retaining clip below it. 2. Remove fluid, using the baster. 3. Remove other retaining clips and spring. 4. Lift metal plate to expose the filter. 5. Remover filter, clean reservoir if necessary and install new filter. 6. Reassembly of the reservoir contents is the reverse of disassembly. Once the reservoir is fully operational, the new fluid can be added and the system bled to complete the job. Bleeding (to remove air) is simply a matter of turning the steering wheel from full left to full right and depressing the brake pedal (see Bentley manual for exact directions). I found the job to be easy and satisfying to do and would recommend it to other E28 owners. As far as operational improvements are concerned, I might be experiencing a placebo effect, but I think my steering response has improved noticeably. I also feel better knowing that the old (tired) filter is out and new fluid and a new filter are part of my steering and braking systems. The old filter had done its job well. one way to have a redhead in your BMW Digital Photos courtesy Larry Myers the fire coverage on TV Volume 4 no 5 Fall 2001 Ausblick 17 BMW Car Club of British Columbia BMW Car Club of BC Corporate Sponsors Directory BMW Car Club of BC Corporate Members and their companies Dr. Patrick Lum Member #0006 Granville Centre for Dental Wellness 8357 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6P 4Z8 Phone 604-261-8164 Fax 604-261-8127 Wray Nixon Member #0104 Nixon Automotive Ltd. 6935 Buller Avenue, Burnaby, BC V5J 4S1 Phone 604-432-9333 Danny Kok Member #0124 Driving Unlimited 22848 - 127th Place, Maple Ridge, BC V2X 1Z6 Phone 604-828-5450 Fax 604-538-0595 Scott Walker Member #0129 No. 1 Collision Inc. 2720 A No. 5 Road, Richmond, BC V6X 2T3 Phone 604-231-9614 Fax 604-231-9624 Bernd Moller Member #0169 MB Euromotors Inc. 344 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Y 1M4 Phone 604-874-0744 Fax 604-874-4789 Jong Tai Ho Member #0185 Happy Ho Upholstery & Auto Glass 101 - 20058 Industrial Ave, Langley, BC V3A 4K7 Phone 604-532-8923 Simon Houlihan Member #0434 National Tire Wholesale 7447 River Road, Delta, BC V4G 1B9 Phone 604-946-5681 Fax 604-946-6827 Bachan Brah Member #0478 Carrera Motors Limited 275 East 6th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5T 1J7 Phone 604-877-0996 Fax 877-0997 Larry Baillie Member #0495 LK Service #19 - 15515 24th Avenue , Surrey, BC V4A 2J4 Phone 604-535-8271 Fax 604-535-8281 Edward Chia Member #0508 Affordable Auto Parts Ltd. 6093 Spur Road, Burnaby, BC V3N 5C2 Phone 604-526-2883 Fax 604-526-2829 Scott Gable Member #0535 Investment Planning Counsel of Canada 1591 Foster Avenue, Coquitlam, BC V3J 2N3 Phone 604-939-2345 Fax -604-939-2350 18 Ausblick Support your Club Sponsors.
