1 MWPGA Launches New Website www.mwpga.org 24th Edition/Spring 2010 News From the Fringe A Publication of the Minnesota Women’s Public Golf Association By Kathy Hollenhorst New MWPGA Website Offers Expanded Content & A Simplified Registration Process ! Check out the new MWPGA website (www.mwpga.org) which will launch this Spring! The website has a simplified design, and easier navigation which makes it easier to find great new content around the MWPGA tournaments, rules, our calendar of events and a great new photo gallery! MWPGA Website Continued on page 3 Style Show to be featured at this years’s Spring Meeting at Brookview Golf Course By Bonnie Blaylock For those golfers who had not yet become a member of Senior Women’s Golf (50 years and older) or did not participate in last year’s Senior Tournament at Blueberry Pines, you still have an opportunity to see a hilarious fashion show performed by some of your golfing friends. Be certain you don’t miss it this time. The Spring meeting for club representatives may be attended by anyone. It is both informative and entertaining. You may join us for golf after the meeting which is also where we will be hosting our Match Play Tournament this year. For details and the registration form see the back page of this newsletter or look on our new website. President’s Corner By Sandy Hanna Happy New Year! Happy New GOLF Year, that is! A new year brings thoughts of resolutions and goal setting. Here are some ideas you may want to consider for your golf resolutions this summer: • I will attend the spring and fall meetings of the MWPGA. • I will volunteer at one event for the MWPGA this summer. • I will encourage a friend to play in an MWPGA event this summer. • I will try a new MWPGA event that I haven’t tried before such as Match Play (which has moved from Phalen Park to Brookview for 2010). The MWPGA spring meeting cannot be missed! Our feature presentation is the entertaining style show seen at Blueberry Pines by our senior golfers last August. We are also giving away a free (non-transferable) tournament entry for someone attending the meeting. There will be Kiosks for shopping, door prizes including free rounds of golf and an informative kick-off to our golf season. Please join us for breakfast at Brookview on April 24 for our spring meeting! The registration form is found on the back page. Volunteering with the MWPGA is an attainable goal. It can give you a sense of purpose and pride and the MWPGA can definitely use your help! It can also give you an idea whether you might be interested in joining the MWPGA Board at some time in the future. Contact Ann Brilley for more information on volunteering with the MWPGA. Playing in an MWPGA event is fun and rewarding. The MWPGA has an event for you! We offer an individual stroke play event at New Prague in July and another one (for those over 50 years of age) at Dwan in August. We host a three day match play event at Brookview in June and we provide partner events at River Oaks in May and Greenhaven in September. Competition sharpens our game and helps us learn about facing new challenges. We can all learn from both winning and losing and make some wonderful friends in the process. • Resolve to play in an MWPGA event this summer! • Entry fees remain the same at $90.00 and have not increased since 2003! • Consider volunteering with the MWPGA! 2010 Board of Directors Sandy Hanna President (651) 452-0624 [email protected] Ann Brilley Vice President (952) 471-0161 [email protected] Marion Holly Treasurer (651) 739-4371 [email protected] Terry Klatt Recording Secretary (763) 576-3180 [email protected] Cindy Miller Corresponding Secretary (651) 686-5549 [email protected] Bonnie Blaylock Director (952)703-0509 [email protected] Denise Falls Director (952) 926-7554 [email protected] Kathy Hollenhorst Director (763) 261-4938 [email protected] Jeri Meola Director (952) 929-8119 [email protected] Stacey Willadsen Director (952) 423-4408 2 Rules of Golf Clinics by Stacey Willadsen Register online ~ http://www.mngolf.org/rules-seminars.cfm The Rules of Golf for Tournament Players Cost: $25.00 (includes 2010-2011 Rules of Golf Book, hors d’oeuvres, and refreshments) This workshop is designed for tournament players- it will be geared toward the player, not the official. If you have a profile within the MGA, you do not need another one for the MWPGA. If you do not have a profile yet – go to www.mwpga.org and create one today! We are excited to bring you the new website – and suggest you use it often during the MWPGA tournament season and year round! If you have questions or need help in setting up a profile, please contact Kathy Hollenhorst at [email protected]. 1 Board of Directors Adds Three New Members by Bonnie Blaylock Denise Falls As a young girl, I LOVED to play sports. I was the typical ‘tomboy’ who participated in swimming, softball, basketball, volleyball and football. While some of my friends played on the high school golf team, I chose synchronized swimming (what was I thinking!) I got the golf ‘bug’ when some friends encouraged me to join the Hollydale Women’s 18 Hole League. What I enjoy about golf is the personal challenge, the beautiful scenery and the new friendships that I make. In addition to playing in a league, my husband and I take golf vacations and I have a weekly game with three colleagues. Golf is now a big part of my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I became interested in serving on the MWPGA board as a way to give back for all of the wonderful experiences I’ve had at the state tournaments. I’ve played in each of them with match play and seniors being my two favorites. At least four of our league members have served on the MWPGA board and they have been role models for me: Jan Nelson, Judy Bohn, MaryLou Hoff and Ann Brilley. The MWPGA is a gem of an organization and I am thrilled to get an opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors. Marion Holly I grew up with two older brothers, so we played sports, including all day baseball games with other neighborhood kids in a nearby vacant field in North St. Paul. Unfortunately, there were no organized sports in high school for girls in my era, so I only played a little recreational softball throughout high school. I’ve played “at” golf as a selftaught golfer from childhood with a set of my aunt’s old Patty Berg clubs. I’ve only had one real golf lesson in my life. Once in a while I would go out with my aunt or my Dad and uncle to play the old Como and the old Phalen golf courses. If my brothers and I had a little money saved up, we would strap the golf bags over our backs and ride our bicycles from our home in North St. Paul to Galls Golf Course (now known as Manitou Ridge). I didn’t play much golf throughout high school or college. Once I was established in a career, I decided to play more golf and joined Columbia in the Minneapolis Park Board, playing nine holes a week. In 1995, I finally decided to really play more golf, joined Phalen Women’s Golf Club and played every Saturday and Sunday. My handicap dropped significantly with the increased play so that I finally felt qualified and began to play in MWPGA events. I have really enjoyed meeting other women golfers while playing in these events. I am currently a member of Phalen Park and Keller golf clubs. I have served on the board of Phalen Women’s Golf Club for many years in almost all positions, including President (I am currently the Treasurer.) My husband and I have a three year old lab mix dog, Macy, who entertains us. I retired in 2007 as Budget Manager for Ramsey County, after 35 years in the finance department. To keep my mind occupied, I work a little part time for a couple of organizations. For fun besides golf, I enjoy walking and playing with our dog, Gopher women’s basketball games, fitness classes (and coffee afterwards), exploring family ancestry, gardening and DIY projects around the house. I look forward to serving as the MWPGA Treasurer and to a great golf season. Three New Members continued on page 5 2 Three New Board Members continued from Page 4 Jeri Meola Jeri was born and raised on the shores of Lake Erie in Ashtabula, Ohio. Her favorite sports were basketball, track and shoveling snow. At her high school they did not offer golf for women – it wasn’t until the age of 18 she picked up a club. She holds an M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Western Michigan University and a B.A. in Psychology from Edinboro University. Her favorite team is the Ohio State Buckeyes, but, we won’t hold that against her. Jeri has been very active in our community as a founding partner and President of Satisfaction Management Systems, Inc. (SMS), for the past 20 years. She recently was honored in 2009 with National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Lifetime Achievement Award. She also is a past board member for Executive Women’s Golf Association. As a long-time member of Theodore Wirth, Jeri looks forward every summer to the City League Match play where she initially met many MWPGA golfers. Her love of the MWPGA events and the great people who have served on the board led her to get more involved as a board member. Her role will be to help fellow golfers with rules interpretation. When meeting Jeri ask her about her unique license plates that read “EglAce.” How to Play in MWPGA Tournaments by Cindy Miller To be eligible to play in MWPGA tournaments, you need to belong to a MWPGA member league. Tournament entry forms are available from your MWPGA league representative or can be downloaded from our web site at mwpga.org. If your league is not a member, you can download a 2010 League Membership Application form at mwpga.org and submit the completed form and dues to Cindy Miller at the address listed on the form. League Representative Input Leads to Increased Tournament Participation By Bonnie Blaylock Tournament participation increased in 2009 thanks to a discussion which took place at last year’s Spring meeting. A list of ideas was compiled for League Representatives to take back to their clubs. In addition, the MWPGA featured the “player-get-a-player” promotion. New participants named the person who encouraged them to play in the tournament. That person was entered into the drawing in the “player-get-a-player promotion. Sue Shatz from Pebble Creek won a free entry into one of this year’s tournaments and Brenda Williams from Pioneer Creek won the $100.00 Caribou Coffee gift card. Below is the list of ideas we gathered at the 2009 Spring meeting. 1. Send emails to club members listing 1. Tournament dates and locations 2. Close dates (deadlines for signing up) 3. A link to the MWPGA.org for online registration forms 2. At your Spring meeting – hold a drawing for a club sponsored “free” entry into a MWPGA tournament. 3. Ask a MWPGA board member to attend your Spring meeting to talk about upcoming tournaments. 4. Post tournament results for local league members along with overall results. 5. Post pictures of your club’s players actually playing in the tournaments. 6. Post MWPGA tournament flyers and registration forms. 7. Encourage players from all handicaps to participate - let them know everyone is welcomed! 1 Volunteer Opportunities by Ann Brilley In 2009 the MWPGA organized 5 championships that involved over 600 competitors. Our 10 member Board of Directors could not have done it without the help of volunteers at each venue. These individuals helped in areas such as registration, starting, scoring, on course spotters and rules. Once again the MWPGA would like to encourage present and past competitors and Board members to consider helping with one or more championships. League members of courses that are hosting our championships are also encouraged to volunteer. If this is your first time to volunteer for one of our championship, individuals are encouraged to participate in the Volunteer Orientation Workshop offered by the MGA. Those interested in helping with rules should consider participating in one of the MGA Rules Workshops. Information about these can be obtained at the website: www.mngolf.org/rules-seminars.cfm A volunteer registration form can be found below or at the MWPGA website, www.mwpga.org and will be available at our spring meeting. Volunteers may sign up for an all day or half day time commitment with lunch provided. You will be notified in advance of any volunteer assignments you are given. For additional information contact Ann Brilley at (952) 471-0161 or email Ann at “[email protected].” The MWPGA looks forward to working with our volunteers at our 2010 championships!
