September General Meeting is Tuesday, 7:00 pm, Sept. 18, at the Sedona Library off of Dry Creek Road in West
Sedona. Guests are always welcome. The Board of Directors meets at 5:00 pm the day before the General Meeting,
also at the library. Any members are welcome to attend and participate with input.
The September Meeting is
Members Night
The traditional Members Night will be held on
September 18th, Tuesday, at 7 pm at the Sedona Public
Library. After a long summer, it is always fun to get
together again. The program and activities are put on
by ALL the members. We will have a brief business
meeting, followed by the usual delicious refreshments
and the great raffle. This promises to be an interesting
and enjoyable evening.
We’ll hear from Linda Kappel as she shares slides of
the history of the Stoneyard. Bob Yee will have the
spheres he’s made during the summer on display with
an explanation of where he and Ed Perry found the
rocks. ( Be sure to see the partially made sphere with
flecks of gold!) Dunyasha and Steve Kluck will also
be speaking. Dunyasha will be showing her signature
wire wrapping and Steve will tell us how to make opal
domes. Other presenters will show and tell about their
jewelry making. If anyone would like to tell about an
exciting rock hunting trip, a special lapidary project, or
a special acquisition to your collection, call Linda Yee
(928-203-9476), and you can be on the program.
We will also have:
CLASS DISPLAY TABLE: Features items that you
made in a class. Include your name.
SALES TABLE: Will show specimens, crafts, tools,
and equipment to sell. Please have items priced and
labeled.
IDENTIFICATION TABLE: For those “unknown”
specimens that you would like to have identified by a
Club expert.
BRAGGING TABLE: For special items such as unique
specimens, carvings, or jewelry. Include your name
and a brief description of the item.
We want everyone to participate! Come and enjoy the
evening with all your rock hound
friends!
OCTOBER MEETING
NOTICE OF DATE CHANGE
The October meeting will be held on the second Tuesday
of the month, October 9, 2007 due to a date conflict
at the library. MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!
The lapidary arts will be featured, meaning that a real
rockhound will be giving the program! Watch for more
information.

General Meeting Minutes for
Tuesday, May 22, 2007
Sedona Public Library
In President Kelly Quester’s absence, Past President Pat McMahan began the business meeting at 7 pm. Two guests and approximately 50 members were present.
Business meeting topics
* Membership Chair Rose Marie Licher published hard copies
of the 2007 membership roster. Members were asked to pick
up the copy labeled with their family name. Unclaimed copies
will be mailed to members who were unable to attend the May
meeting or June picnic. Save postage by claiming your copy of
the roster.
* Treasurer Ray Cooke reported that the balance is $16,815. A
detailed report is available for members to review.
* Directions to the June 9th potluck picnic at Pat McMahan’s
house are on page 4 of the May newsletter. A signup sheet for
food items was circulated during the General Meeting. Members should bring their own chairs to the picnic which starts at
11:00 am. Ev Orsborn is organizing the picnic.
* Club members are encouraged to participate as speakers for
the Members’ Night program on September 18th. Topics can
range from summer activities to special rock and mineral finds. Also, members can display items at a “bragging table.” Contact
Linda Yee or Pat McMahan to volunteer as a speaker for 3-10
minute talks.
* The Club is still in need of a Historian to take over for Linda
Yee, who is our very busy VP of Programs/Publicity and also
the co-chair of the upcoming Gem and Mineral Show.
* Remembrances
Remembrance Committee Chairperson, Bernice Brown, reported on several members. A sympathy card was sent to Doris
Banks, whose sister passed away. Rita Topps is recuperating
from surgery. Marge Herkenham is on the mend at Kachina
Point. Ralph Graves and Ken Brungraber were welcomed back. Thank you cards were sent to Linda Yee for leading the April
field trip and to Patti Polk for substituting as newsletter editor. * Scholarship and Community Outreach
Committee Chair Mary Jane Cooke reported that the $1,000
scholarship was awarded to Maxwell Weaver, a graduating
senior at Sedona Red Rock High School. This scholarship will
help Maxwell to buy uniforms when he attends the Air Force
Academy.
* Sedona Gem and Mineral Show, October 27-28
Members were encouraged to bring donations for the club’s
booth to the June picnic at Pat McMahan’s house.
Several tables are available for members to sell their treasures.
The reduced table price is $25 for members.

Twenty-six dealers are expected. The contract is being reviewed
by the Board.
* Field Trips
ASU Center for Meteorite Studies on April 26
Thirty members enjoyed the convenient and comfortable bus
trip to the ASU Center for Meteorite Studies and the Mining and
Mineral Museum. Since this excursion was such a success, trips
to other AZ locations may be planned.
Thanks to Linda Yee for organizing the fun and educational
adventure for meteor-loving rockhounds. May 25 field trip to Grapevine Canyon
Collection of onyx is the goal for the Friday, May 25 field trip to
Grapevine Canyon. Starting promptly at 7 am, Pat McMahan
will lead a caravan of high clearance vehicles for the 2-hr drive
from the Posse Grounds in Sedona to the collection site.
* Education
In Vivian Hilker’s absence, Pat reminded members to contact
instructors regarding the classes they are interested in. The
$5.00 registration fee is to be paid in advance directly to the
instructor rather than to the Club. * Break
Refreshments were organized by Judy Feldman. Cookies were
provided by Sally Kasner, Mary Montgomery and Anne Crosman.
* Members displayed interesting examples of rocks and minerals.
* Program
To prepare club members for rockhounding adventures during
the summer hiatus, Linda Yee organized a program on safety
for rockhounds. As a Certified Emergency Nurse with 25 years
experience, Linda gave a comprehensive overview on safety
and first aid. The audience received handouts that listed safety
and survival kit items to take on rockhounding trips. Brendt
Johnson, Fire Fighter Paramedic of the Sedona Fire District, contributed to the discussion on prevention of injuries and care of injured or ill patients in the wilderness. Real life emergencies and
how they were handled were described by club members Patti
Polk and Pat McMahan. * Raffle
Board member James Terry sold raffle tickets in Ev Orsborn’s
absence. As usual, many nice minerals and fossils were awarded
as prizes.
Pat thanked all members who quickly put away chairs and tables
at the end of the meeting. The next General Meeting will be
held on Tuesday, September 18th.

Picnic
The summer picnic in June was
a huge success. Thanks to Pat
McMahan for hosting the event
at his beautiful home under the
trees. Brian and Ev Orsborn did
a super job organizing the tables,
chairs, center pieces, drinks, and
the food table. The members
did their usual incredible job of
bringing the perfect variety of
picnic fare. The pictures tell it
all. We were all very impressed
with Pat’s shop with all the saws
and other lapidary equipment.
We thank him for taking us on tour of his impressive museum of gem and mineral specimens.

The 6th annual Sedona Gem and Mineral Show is coming up fast!!

do. THANKS.
It will be October 27th and 28th at the Sedona Red
Rock High School (see flyer in this newsletter). . Over
30 dealers, including many of our own members, have
received their contracts, ASU is arranging to have their
meteorite display again and over 50 Arizona and California Gem and Mineral Clubs have received information about our show. We will have demonstrations, exhibits, a fabulous Kid’s Korner, the all day raffle, food
and refreshments, and our usual well-stocked Club
Booth with great buys.
We need everyone’s help to make this our most successful show ever. Kelly Quester, Volunteer Coordinator,
will be getting out the sign up sheets and twisting arms
in the very near future!! The following jobs are open:
1. Set up, clean up – set up tables and cover them.
2. Display cases – Mia Elazizi needs assistance with
recruiting displays, picking up the cases, and setting
them up with lighting.
3. Food booth – we may get help from the high school
with this, but will still need assistance. Dealers will
be getting complimentary coffee and doughnuts.
4. Highway signs – make or purchase the signs (“rock
show today” with arrows pointing the way), put signs
out and pick them up both days.
5. Assist dealers finding their tables and getting set
up.
6. Assist with security – we plan to have hired security
at night
7. Make dealer name tags and table signs
8. Distribute flyers to resorts, bed and breakfasts, and
other venues in Sedona, VOC, and Cottonwood
9. Staff the welcome table
10. Raffle will be conducted by Ev and Brian Orborn,
but we need donations of raffle prizes.
11. Assist with Club Booth – price items, set up, donate
specimens/equipment, be a cashier or “salesperson.”
12. Set up electrical hook ups – must have working
knowledge of electrical systems.
13. Help in the Kids’ Korner (Mary Jane Cooke will
need assistance at one of our most popular booths).
14. Be a “floater” on show days – circulate through out

In Memory of John T. Bennett
John and his wife Dorothy
Bennett have been members
of the Sedona Gem and Mineral Club since 1983. John has
served on the Board, and as
Show Chair, as well as 2nd VP
for Field Trips. John also designed the club badges. John
Bennett died on July 28, 2007 from complications
from a stroke. John was 86 years old.
Sedona G & M Remembrance Report
The summer slipped by with a variety of
remembrances. In June thank you notes were sent
to Pat McMahan and Nancy Bihler for their gracious
hosting of the annual picnic. Also, a card was signed by
the members at the picnic to wish Marge Herkenham
well. In July a warm “welcome home” card was
sent to Marge, after her long rehabilitation. And
sadly, at the end of July, a sympathy card in loving
memory of long time member, John Bennett, was
sent to Dorothy Bennett and their daughter, Nancy
Walsh. In August a card with well wishes was sent
to Doris Banks. Please, contact Bernice Brown with
word about anyone needing remembering.
