Mike uses first-hand knowledge of waters he's fished throughout the US and around the world to illustrate the most effective patterns and techniques to imitate mayflies, caddis flies, midge, crane flies and terrestrials-- based upon his personal observation and tying experience. Practical and proven advice on locating, stalking, playing, and landing trout. Tactics for fishing dry flies, streamers, wet flies, and nymphs, from one of the best fly fishermen (and friends) in the business. Signed copies while available and a free fly with each book, including Limited Editions 260 color photos; 100 illus; 8 1⁄2 x 11 inches; 304 pages (#B4290) signed copies with free fly Price -- $59.95 Early praise from those that know . . . "Few fishermen know as much about fishing spring creeks as Mike Lawson and fewer still - maybe none - can cut through the complexities of entomology and technique to make it sound like something less than brain surgery. You hear it all the time, but this really is a long awaited book, and I'm glad it's finally here." -- John Gierach "From the first page to the last, it's a magic carpet ride with Mike Lawson. The book is like having Mike guide you on a spring creek. He is the perfect teacher sharing his angling knowledge so that you can learn through his book what took him a lifetime to experience. When you finish the book you will be a better fly fisher and feel like you have known Mike forever. No question this book will be a classic for years to come." -- Jack Dennis ~Limited Edition~ Spring Creeks by Mike Lawson Only 225 copies printed and the Book Mailer has 4. The melody starts with snapping trees and gale-force winds, waltzes through the quiet conversation in the cave, lilts into the rings of rising trout in a quiet rainy dusk, then picks up steam as I strained at the oars holding the boat against the sweeping flow of an outside river bend. As a fishing guide I have come to know something of outdoor vacations since I'm always on somebody else's. The essence of a good vacation was in the day I shared with the Piano Man, who among highlights in a fairy-tale career played keyboards for Pink Floyd, produced Michael Jackson's Thriller tour, he'd even worked with Madonna. A gator of a trout nosed up beneath the tangled spaghetti of the exposed roots of a newly fallen cottonwood tree. The cast across the surging current and under the low root wad was nearly impossible. The Piano Man grunted as he heaved a sidearm bounce cast; then blinked in surprise as the white deer-hair fly ricocheted off the water, bounced twice, and disappeared into the black maw of the hooked jaw. Climbing in the drift boat with a real live rock-n-roll star, it was a dream come true, if you were dreaming of thirty-knot winds kicking up whitecaps on the river. And then it began to sleet. We took refuge in a cave carved by Pleistocene floods, the rock reflecting sentences with a faint, tinny echo. "Is she happy? I asked. "Madonna, I mean." In the song the major frolic of the frantic fight fades to a mournful minor, the piano notes as gasping and tired as the pale weak blood in the gills of the exhausted fish that nearly died in his hands. At last the trout finned slowly away; the last lingering chord a triumphant reminder of the recuperative powers of a day on the river. Thinning brown hair scraped orange lichens on the low ceiling as the Piano Man shook his head. "Her image doesn't stop where her life begins," he said, "Somebody's always after her for something. She doesn't know who to trust, so she spends a lot of time alone." Which is just exactly what I wanted to hear. Madonna could trust me. She didn't have to be alone anymore. Wholeheartedly indulging a passion frees up the brain, which is what a good vacation can do. It can help you forget, it can help you remember. So if you've lost the music in your own life, try catching a fish. "You should bring her fishing," I said seriously. The Piano Man laughed until he cried. "I hate to ruin your retirement plans," he said, "But you're talking about the Material Girl. Her idea of nature is a potted plant." -- Thank you, Dave, for this condensed excerpt from your new book. Read about Dave Ames' new book, "A Good Life Wasted" (see p. 3). The stories went on and on. From private jets to British Bird Shoots where they hauled pheasants away in dump trucks, the Piano Man had done it all. Madonna would remain a figment of my libido, still, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. The first book Dave Ames published was "True Love and the Woolly Bugger" -- it was an instant hit. So much in demand that it became somewhat of a fly-fishing cult classic. Was it the cover or the content that pushed it over the edge? Gary once stated the book should have a sticker, "Not for the faint of heart" -- and also added that somewhere around page 100, after being dazzled by the words, touched by the pathos, and overwhelmed by the humor, he was ready to nominate it for the Pulitzer Prize and knew he had no choice but to make it the Book Mailer Spring '96 Trout Selection, even though that decision was much more serious. "It isn't Pink Floyd," I said, "But tonight there's a jam session at the Mountain Palace. There's some good musicians, everybody fishes. Come on down, you might have some fun." The Piano Man studied his delicate blue-veined hands like a bouquet of dead flowers. "It's gone," he whispered. Haltingly, he said as a kid so many splendid notes lined up in his head churning to escape he couldn't not play the piano. His mom would force him to go play baseball but he'd sneak back to the keyboard, the music swelling inside until he felt he'd burst like a balloon. Since the third and last printing was back in '97, we had most of the remaining copies available. These are now gone, and finding one for our customers is a big challenge. So we are very excited and relieved that True Love is scheduled to be republished in a softcover sometime early 2004. The cover has been redesigned and the old cover vs. new cover negotiations have begun. Although the controversial cover may end up changing, the engaging content is sure to stay the same. If it does change, the risqé postcards we had done of the old cover should bring a pretty penny on eBay. As always, we'll keep you posted. "I didn't earn that gift," he said. "I was born with it, it was so easy I abused it. I made music for money, but I didn't make music for me. And now I can't remember how." A flowing river is more conducive to heartfelt confessions than a therapist's cold couch, sometimes you have to be Ann Landers out there. The Piano Man was a passionate dry-fly fisherman on an extended vacation, haphazardly roaming the Rockies in a four-wheel drive van. The next river was tomorrow's surprise, he didn't even have a map. Maybe he didn't know what he was looking for, but he must have known that every river sings its own song. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Advice for the day: If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do what it says on the aspirin bottle: "Take two aspirin" and "Keep away from children". "Keep a journal of your trip," was my advice. "It helps if you write things down." That winter a CD arrived unexpectedly in the mail. Each -2- The Book Mailer's top picks for new titles in trout fishing -------------------------------------------------------guess who's back . . . an incredible collection . . . Trout Hunter A Good Life Wasted Twenty Years as a Fishing Guide The Way of an Angler by Rene' Harrop by Dave Ames At last — a collection of world renowned fly fishing guide René Harrop's finest. Each article is an affectionate account covering six decades of fly fishing. A great how-to on casting techniques, innovations in fly tying, reading the water, insect identification, and much more. Just think what we would know after sixty years of angling. But could we ever explain it as well as Rene' Harrop? Read this and start living the most successful fly fishing experiences possible. A Good Life Wasted is a pure fun for anyone who has ever wondered, just once, what it would be like not to have a"real job." From the first chapter—in which Ames bluffs his way into a job as a fishing guide for the rich and famous (after barely suppressing the overwhelming urge to go postal at a federal agency where he suffered his first, and only,"real" job in a cubicle farm)—we're hooked. It's mating midges, Blackfoot Indians and copper miners' daughters; fiddles and guitars and the fabric of space, A Good Life Wasted spins a great tale that entices the deskbound salary slave to make a break for it, head west to big sky and fast, cold water, ASAP. I really enjoyed this follow up to True Love and the Woolly Bugger, which, by the way will be available early next year. I'm pretty sure you're going to like this also-- softcover; 4-Color photos; 8 1/2 x 10 inches, 224 pages. (#B4300) ---------------------------- Lefty Kreh's Ultimate Guide to Fly Fishing Everything Anglers Need to Know by the World's Foremost Fly Fishing Expert Price -- $24.95 We had the privildge of attending a Lyon's Press party celebrating Lefty's new book and his contributions to the fly fishing world at the trade show this fall. As I placed this book in the Book Mailer, it occured to me that there is no way Lefty named this book. Trust me, he is a man of few words. And this book has an incredibly long title, but every word is knowledge, every nuance has substance. This is everything the master has ever written about the sport of fly fishing, all in one place. Over the past fifty years Lefty has written nearly two dozen books, accounting for hundreds of thousands of copies in print, in order to address the many aspects of our exciting sport. Now for the first time, all of Lefty's many tips and techniques will be available in a single, powerful volume: Lefty Kreh's Ultimate Guide to Fly Fishing. Culled from a lifetime of fishing and teaching in almost every conceivable place a fish can be caught, fly fishers will learn the master's thousands of subtle tricks and invaluable insights. A must have for the very new to the very experienced. something different . . . The Mind of the Trout A Cognative Ecology for Biologists and Angler by Thomas C. Grubb Jr. How and why do trout think? How do they decide where to eat and which food to eat? Why do they refuse to behave as predicted, stumping anglers by rejecting a larger fly for a smaller one or not responding at all to anything in an angler's box? How do trout know to bolt to one particular covered area after being hooked or flushed? Why can trout smell better than humans but not remember as well? Citing the most recent scientific findings in a readily understandable form, Thomas C. Grubb, Jr. addresses these questions and more in The Mind of the Trout . It is the first book to bring together many varied concepts of cognitive ecology as applied to trout and their salmonid relatives: char, salmon, grayling, and whitefish. softcover; 11 drawings; 6x 9 inches; 288 pages (#B4312) ---------------------------- hardcover; B & W photos & illus.; 8.1/2 x 11inches; 464 pages Price -- $21.95 (#B4322) available in December . . . ---------------------------- Price -- $40.00 new and radical . . . due in November Instinctive Fly Fishing The Small Stream Dry Fly by Taylor Streit by Lou Stevens Sometimes the very simplest things are the most important. Streit, twenty-year veterern guide, has witnessed thousands of clients catch trout. Their successes and failures often boil down to a few elementary rules: keep the sun at your back, keep your silhouette off the water, keep your fly in productive water, think like a predator, and so on. With an almost Zen-like scrutiny, Streit discusses his distilled techniques for fishing pressured trout. He looks into what separates the beginner from the expert caster, and dissects the mechanics of the perfect strike. The result is a refreshing take on how simple this complex sport really is. -highly recommended- In The Small Stream Dry Fly, Lou Stevens presents a new and radical approach to fishing the dry fly on a wide variety of small streams. Whether you are fishing the dry fly on chalk streams, hill streams, brooks, and burns or moorland streams, the theory is the same. However, the tactics used vary enormously from one type of water to another. Based on the author's extensive knowledge, this book introduces the reader to a number of little-known tactical flies. These are described in detail and include the flies needed to practice the radical"damp fly" approach. hardcover; B & W illus; 6 x 9 inches, 288 pages (#B4323) Price -- $44.95 available in November . . . hardcover; 6 x 9 inches; 256 pages (#B4299) ---------------------------- hardcover; B&W photos; line drawings; 6 x 8 inches; 156 pgs Price -- $24.95 (#B4303) -3- Price -- $19.95 formerly, Landing the Big One now . . . back in print The Essential Fly Tyer Fish on! by J. Edson Leonard A Guide to Landing and Playing Big Fish on a Fly by Floyd N. Franke Starting with the basics, the author thoroughly covers fishhooks and the relative merits of the various points, bends, barbs, and styles for different types of fishing and all species of gamefish. He also covers equipment for the tier's bench, including vises, tools, and materials, with an in-depth discussion of fly-tying nomenclature and the fundamentals of the tying art. Leonard then delves into the rich area of specific flies for specific fish. He offers dozens of patterns and tying instructions for drys, wets, nymphs, and streamers for catching trout, steelhead, salmon, bass, panfish, shad, pike, and saltwater gamefish. Beginners and advanced tiers alike will enjoy the unique features of Leonard's approach. Besides covering the standard flies, he also develops a theory of pattern selection that enables the reader to construct new and original ties from a synthesis of the time-tested basics. Broad in scope, rich in detail, and beautifully illustrated by the author, The Essential Fly Tier is a classic book no fly fisher (or tier) can afford to miss. Many anglers successfully hook fish only to lose them after the hook pulls free or the line breaks. The fisherman's first concern is often placing the fly where the fish are feeding, with little thought as the how to land a fish in the happy event that"the big one" is hooked. (personally experienced!) Landing the Big One outlines the general rules for playing fish, and investigates those variables that have a direct impact upon your ability to land fish. A topic little has been written about, but one that sure makes a difference between landing your fish or not. hardcover; 6 x 9; black and white drawings;120 pages (#B4265) Price -- $24.95 ---------------------------------------------------- great gift!! Trout of the World hardcover; color insert; B & W illus; 8 x 10 inches; 272 pages by James Prosek (#B4297) From the Oxus trout of eastern Afghanistan to the small golden brown trout of British chalk streams, Prosek brings to life trout from around the world, several of which are the few remaining of their type. Prosek has a passion for trout and conveys their beauty with the stroke of his brush in this collection of nearly 100 gorgeous watercolors. look out fish - the word is out! available in November Guide Flies by David Klausmeyer From the streams and rivers of Montana and Michigan, to the flats of Key West, to the coast of California, the professional fishing guides who spend hundreds of days a year on the waters of a specific place or region know those waters and the food the fish are feeding on. Now, for the first time, Dave Klausmeyer brings you a selection of the killer flies each of these guides have developed for their local waters. Guide Flies shows you the flies in beautiful, close-up color photographs. It gives you detailed recipes and tying tips so you can duplicate these flies at your own vise. And, through an extensive questionnaire and interviews, Dave has solicited the details from each guide of how they developed their flies and how they fish them. Guide Flies includes the latest patterns for catching trout, bass, pike, striped bass, bonefish, tarpon, and bluefish—all of your favorite gamefish. The text provides a historical profile of each fish along with personal reflections by the author. Both sensitive and informative Trout of the World is a must for the library of the recreational fisherman as well as the ichthyologist. ~Poster included with each book~ hardcover; 10 x 7 inches; 244 pages (#B4313) Price -- 32.50 ---------------------------------------------------- new and updated-- available in November All About Flies by Chuck and Sharon Tyron A terrific revision to the classic Figuring Out Flies. A couple has a dog that snores, so the wife queries the vet for help."Tie a ribbon around the dogs testicles and he will stop snoring." says the vet."Yeah right." Says the wife. But when she retires that evening and the dog starts to snore, she decides what the heck, finds a red ribbon and ties it around the dogs"private" parts. Lo and behold, it works and the dog stops snoring. Later that nite her husband comes in after tipping a few with his fishing buddies. He falls into bed and promptly starts snoring. Well, thought the wife, in for a dime, in for a dollar and reaches for a piece of blue ribbon and carefully ties it around her husbands"parts." Amazingly it works on him too! In the morning her husband stumbles into the bathroom and notices his new adornment, walking back into the bedroom he sees the dog. He shakes his head in wonderment and comments to the dog, "I don't know where we went or what we did, but we took first and second place." • Hooks • Materials • Fly pattern origins and their mystique • Egg flies • Flies seen from both angler and fish viewpoints • Tying instructions for dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, and streamers • How to make your flies more beautiful and more durable • And lots much more Included are tying recipes and instructions for dozens of familiar and lesser-known patterns for both fresh and salt water. We hope your summer fishing season brought lots of fish to your net and memories to share that will keep you dreaming through the winter. You may notice the format of the Book Mailer is a retreat back to the past. We're not quite as fancy as your last edition, but we know Gary would agree -- it's the content that counts. While there have been lots of new titles published in the past six months, we've picked the titles and topics we think you are going to most appreciate. But anything is available with a phone call 1-800-874-4171 or e-mail [email protected]. One of the reasons for this smaller issue is money (evil, evil); the other reason bodes towards changes and updates that will take place with our website, www.thebookmailer.com. We are going to integrate our site with an existing website that has every fly fishing book in print. You'll be able to peruse anything and everything you ever thought about, drooled over, or had an inkling might come in handy -- and there's a handy search feature to find books on any specific topic of interest. Whether it be in text, video, DVD, or CD-Rom, a complete description and picture is available to look at, noodle on, and excite your angling urges. An added bonus will be some exclusive new"fishy gift" items that Gary would"totally dis" -- but we think you're wife would love them. We hope to have this available late this winter -- just when you have time to do some serious dreaming and drooling. Keep checking in with the website and sign up for our eBulletins for updates. For our loyal customers who are kicking and screaming against the new age of internet, the Book Mailer will continue to roll off the presses in this smaller format, with all of the same fun but a more selective pick of what is new, innovative, and a"must have" in the fly-fishing industry. We actually hope this might afford us to be able to send different newsletters throughout the year. As far as new and exciting additions in this issue of the Book Mailer, be sure to check out the fly pages (p.21-25). All patterns can now be ordered in the usual quantity of six per pack or three per pack. Thank you for your feedback on our fly pack offerings from the Spring/Summer newsletter, it was very unanimous this is something you all would benefit from and we aim to please. We have retained the old item numbers, and simply request you use a T in front of the item number for a 3-pack or an S for a 6-pack. We think this is simple enough, but you know us, we may display a little confusion at times. We've had an incredible summer with the Stealth Rods, (p.13). The new multi-piece 6- and 8- weights have been a total smash hit. Opening up a whole new dimension for using the greatest rod ever in fresh and now saltwater applications. Stealth Rod owners are so satisfied, we can't believe this is still pretty much our own little secret. Look for their quotes! It's official, we won't ever fish without a furled leader again, (p.12) We've added to our size/length selections of regular stock. You don't want one of these for just one or two fishing situations, you want them for all your fishing situations. Furled Leaders enhance your presentation, out perform any other leader in a windy situation and greatly increase your success landing and playing a fish. Don't deny yourself. We've given you a sneek-peek at some of the best new books out there, but there is much more in this issue of the Book Mailer, read on and enjoy! "I've been exclusively fly fishing for 10 years. I tried Gary's line first and was impressed with the feel and consistancy with the advertising. I saved up and then purchased the 4-pc. 4-wt. Stealth rod. As soon as it arrived I headed to a spring creek nearby (it was December) and caught 43 fish in just over 4 hours. Every one felt like a handful. The Stealth rod is a dream to cast and land fish. Not only do you have excellent tyers showing you the best methods to tie Gary's patterns, but you have Gary giving great commentary on each fly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The great Utah fly tyer, and our friend, Paul Stimpson, started the driving force behind these videos. These are LaFontaine patterns -- flies Gary tied hundreds of -- but Paul is a professional tyer and, with Gary's guidance, found ways to tie the flies faster and better. The flies in the videos are from Gary's books, Trout Flies Proven Patterns and Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes. They also include newer patterns, developed after the publication of Trout Flies, that have never been shown before. The videos are directed for the intermediate and advanced fly tyer, and are guaranteed not only to show Gary's best flies, but to make you a much better fly tyer. Paul and Gary, along with Al Beatty, simplified steps for each pattern which result in making you a better tyer. Tips you can use for whatever you are tying. For tying Gary's patterns, and for learning tricks in general, these videos are wonderful. As the experts tie, Gary divulges a tremendous amount of fishing information to go along with each pattern. As a group, this selection of fly patterns cover every situation of imitation and attraction for trout steams and lakes. ---------- "Take a fine team of five fly tyers, all superb professionals, showing the fastest, most efficient ways to tie my patterns and you have a really special teaching tool with LaFontaine Originals -- Volume V," remarked Gary when this one came out. --------- We may see more from this terrific quartet of fly tiers. Gary shared many ideas they intend to pursue and we'll keep our fingers crossed and encourage them any way we can. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the Beginning! killer Patterns! If you're using Touch Dubbing, just add it to the fur in the grinder. If you're using the yarn, be sure to chop it up into 1/8" pieces before you combine it with the fur in the grinder. One of the most common questions asked at the Book Mailer office is about the mix of antron and fur for tying the Sparkle Pupa patterns. We'd always like to help our friendly tyers out, so we queried Paul Stimpson for some concise, accurate information. He gave us some very important tips. The under bodies of the Emergent Sparkle Pupa and the Deep Sparkle Pupa have to be touch dubbed in order to obtain the sparseness required for the pattern. pattern Gary liked using BT's Super Tacky Fly Tying Wax (p. 9) for touch dubbing. The over bodies need to be sparse enough to see the under body through the over body. Gary was really adamant about these two statements. The biggest error we see with these patterns is that they get tied with the over body too heavy. Even some commercial tyers get this wrong or they don't engage in enough quality control to keep them tied properly. Most crucial is that if the fly is tied too fat or too heavy, the pattern will not be nearly as effective on the water. And after you have lovingly tied all those flies, we do so want you catching fish. The type of fur isn't as important as the color. You need to find a fur that matches the color of the fly. For example: a gray Emergent Sparkle Pupa uses a mixture of gray fur and gray Antron, so find a fur that matches the gray color of the Antron. Paul prefers to use natural fur, but since bright green bunnies are hard to come by, he sometimes has to rely on dyed fur. Rocky Mountain Dubbing and Spirit River both have some great dyed furs. Paul finds muskrat fur blends well with Antron and uses it as often as he can. After locating the correct fur, chop it up into 1/8" sections and blend it with either Antron Yarn or Touch Dubbing (see p. 9). One half fur and one half Antron is the standard mix but everyone should have a copy of Gary's Caddisflies or Trout Flies Proven Patterns to get the recipes for the correct mixes. Paul uses a small electric coffee grinder to mix the fur and If you have other questions, let us [email protected] will get you an answer pretty quick. And we might learn something new also. -7- The Danvise We continue to get lots of phone calls from customers who have bought the LaFontaine Originals video series (see p.6). The calls are about the fly tying vise used by Paul Stimpson to tie the patterns. This amazing vise is the Danvise. Trust us -- it is as truly impressive in person as it is on the video. And it comes with the full recommendation of Paul Stimpson, one of the finest commercial fly tiers. Paul tied around 5,000 dozen flies on his first Danvise and then had to replace it with another. (Oh come on! 5,000 dozen flies, the vise deserved a rest.) Paul happens to be a vise junky. He has over a dozen, including some of the finest ever made. He ties with the Danvise. A true rotary, the jaws clamp shut and hold the hook perfectly tight. It's a lever action. Our readers kept asking about the special items used on Gary's flies. To clear up confusion, here is a listing of what we offer. -------------------------------the Book Mailer has done it! Finding it. It is a miracle material -- just look in any fly tying catalog and you'll see how it has been embraced since it was first used on the Sparkle Pupa in 1972. It's getting almost impossible to find the brand name knitting yarns that have Antron; and it's impossible to get all of the good colors. Antron reflects light. It is Nylon, but the filaments of regular Nylon are round and the filaments of Antron are 3 or 4 sided. Those flat sides bounce back light rays and make Antron sparkle. The first flies ever tied with Antron were Gary's Deep Sparkle Pupa, Emergent Sparkle Pupa, and Diving Caddis. And, since we have this yarn (custom colors with 35% clear Antron fibers), we decided to offer another product — Now available— (painstakingly packaged by elves) It's here! Tom worked with Gary to develop the True Spin Loop Tool and the Fine-Toothed Metal Comb. Gary had the concept, Tom had the ability to turn the concept into a workable tool. We have sold thousands of these tools and there is nothing like them anywhere today, except here in the Book Mailer. Imagine our excitement when Tom called us and said, "I have a prototype of two new tools I would like you to test out." Not one, but two!! Wow! "Send them directly to Paul Stimpson," we said. This is a pre-formed hook, the body molded of heavy pewter in a hydrodynamic tear drop shape — the result is a fast-sinking hook for the great new attractor nymph! It became so frustrating trying to find a flat, adhesive-backed lead tape to shape the Tear Drop Nymph that we started molding our hooks with non-toxic pewter. This made tying the Tear Drop Nymph so much faster that we have begun producing the pre-formed hooks in great enough quantities for our customers. With this hook, our professional tiers can now tie the Tear Drop Nymph for our catalog. For the fly tiers in our audience we are now offering both the Uni-Glo material (see below) and the Pre-Formed Tear Drop Nymph Hooks. A word of warning — this pattern is going to become your favorite fast water fly. Gary's research for The Dry Fly -- New Angles included a full season studying grasshoppers and the way trout reacted to them. One of his big discoveries that summer was that trout were often suspicious of both the insect and the imitation floating on the water. They often studied hoppers (and other large insects) before deciding whether or not to take them. What were they looking for? A bit of movement -- a flexing of that long body. The long, straight shank on a large hook was wrong. The trout frequently refused large flies (#10 or larger). The Flex patterns are here! Flies tied with these hooks flex on the water -- and that movement triggers the strike (see the Theory of Imitation in The Dry Fly -- New Angles). As more of these beautiful fly casting creations reach the streams, and more and more fly fishermen see them, the word is spreading. These are great fly rods. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Casting? This is so far and away the best rod ever made for dry fly and shallow water nymphing that nothing compares to it (not just our opinion, but the opinion of those who already fish with one). The Stealth is a perfect taper made out of the finest graphite scrim in the world. Sweet action -- great for close, accurate casting and powerful enough to reach way out. Cosmetics? This fly rod will not cost you fish on the stream or lake. It is beautifully finished, but it doesn't shine like a warning beacon when you're waving it around. The Stealth has a matte finish, black Fuji double-foot guides, and an anodized reel seat (ebony insert). It flexes beautifully all the way down into the butt and also has amazing casting power. Grip is a Full Wells with a front taper -- handle has an uplocking reel seat. Each rod comes with a spare tip -- this is our revolutionary way of protecting you. Price includes the Stealth rod (with extra tip), cloth rod bag, and cordura rod case. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In stock and shipping now Excellent for the new restrictions in air travel 2-piece Stealth Rods 4-Piece Stealth Rods the Stealth 2-490 d-taper series 4-weight -- 9 foot two-piece (2.85 oz) Price -- $405.00 (#R295) the Stealth 4-490 d-taper series 4-weight -- 9 foot four-piece Price -- $480.00 (#R289) the Stealth 2-490 d-taper Ultimate Package with Pro Series Fly Line and two #2 Furled Leaders Price -- $410.00 (#S3295) the Stealth 4-490 d-taper Ultimate Package with Pro Series Fly Line and two #3 Furled Leaders Price -- $510.00 (#S3289) the Stealth 2-590 d-taper series 5-weight -- 9 foot two-piece (2.95 oz) Price -- $390.00 (#R296) the Stealth 4-590 d-taper series 5-weight -- 9 foot four-piece Price -- $480.00 (#R290) the Stealth 4-590 d-taper Ultimate Package with Pro Series Fly Line and two #3 Furled Leaders Price -- $510.00 (#S3290) the Stealth 2-590 d-taper Ultimate Package with Pro Series Fly Line and two #3 Furled Leaders Price -- $410.00 (#S3296) This marvelous Stealth Rod is our standard d-taper modulus design. The "p" stands for "power". The "D" stands for "delicate". This graphite scrim is a technological advance — with it we can make a rod flex and store more energy in the casting stroke than any other rod available on the market. The way it bends, deep into the mid-section, makes it perfect not only for throwing a long line, but for casting weighted nymphs and streamers. the Stealth 3-890 h-taper series 8-weight -- 9 foot three-piece Price -- $550.00 (#R397) the Stealth 3-890 h-taper Ultimate Package with Weight-Forward Floating Line and two #5 Furled Leaders Price -- $575.00 (#S3397) --------------------------------------- The new h-taper 3-piece rods cast just as beautifully and maybe even a little farther than the original p-taper. The main difference from the p-taper is in the butt. The h-taper has a powerful fighting butt on a thinner blank. The grip is a double well with an anodized aluminum reel seat. These modifications make a excellent light saltwater rod as well a freshwater rod. These new h-tapers are still stealthy black with the same guide system and they include a spare tip. The award-winning Stealth Rod is matte finish -- every metal part is low gloss. Because there is no flash, this is one fly rod that will not cost you trout on the stream. Get close to the fish and make sweet, delicate, accurate casts. This is the perfect fly rod for presenting the fly. two tips with each rod -fully guaranteed against manufacturing defects SHIPPING CHARGE: We used to offer free shipping until UPS started snapping our rods literally in half. We switched from a hard-sided box to plastic PVC drain pipe. Let's see them break one of those --it's rod against machine! This did increase the packaging cost plus the shipping weight. So we now have to charge $10 for insured shipping, but your rod does arrive in more pieces than ordered -- please provide a street address with order. - 13 - ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• no rod is complete without ~~~~~~~the perfect fly line. ~~ for anyone who seems to be getting fussier all the time about his fly fishing equipment~~ It's not good enough anymore for a piece of equipment to just be suitable. This might be an offshoot of looking for "better" flies. Now that the patterns developed by Gary are catching the fish that should be caught (or so we believe), there's no excuse for the basic equipment messing up your chances. We wanted the perfect line for dry fly and shallow nymph fishing. What's perfect? It can't scare the fish. And it has to present the fly accurately and delicately. Jim Teeny, the man who knows as much about designing fly lines as anyone around, asked Gary to develop a floating line with him. Gary's part was simple – all he had to do was describe exactly what he wanted in a fly line. Jim has the hard part – he had to keep bringing Gary his designs to test out. The technology of line manufacture has advanced with computer applications. Much more precise tapers are now possible; much greater consistency is now possible. The result of Gary and Jim's collaboration is a Professional Series line (with Gary's name on it) from Teeny Nymph Co. for dry fly and nymph fishing. 1. It is not only olive colored but it also has a dull surface. It won't reflect light and send out those flashes that scare trout. 2. It is a precise Weight Forward taper. It turns over a leader (even a long one) as nice as can be; and yet it is so perfectly balanced that it doesn't hit the water hard like some weight forward designs. ~~ It is the most accurate and precise line that we have ever used for dry fly and nymph presentation. These are available to our customers — and they carry the full Book Mailer guarantee. – high floating, delicate taper Weight Forward – 2- weight (#L236) 3- weight (#L23 SIZE RANGE 4- weight (#L238) 5- weight (#L239) recommended for dry fly and nymph fishing 6- weight (#L240) Price -- $44.95 each ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ~~ the Amazing J.Ryall Fly Reel ~~ Gary always endorsed J. It's called the "Lifetime Box" because it will literally last indefinitely. The revolutionary Bristle-Tac material holds any regular wire hook from #20 to #4. It flicks away water, helping to eliminate problems with rusty hooks. It holds barbless hooks firmly because it grabs the wire of the hook, not the barb. The Bristle-Tac material never gets torn up by the hooks. The boxes are imprinted with the Private Label Flies design in gold lettering and are a stealthy black with a metal hinge system. Nymphs, wets, streamers, emergers, and dries are all shown here. There are tying instructions for each pattern. A lead-in explains why and how each fly works and in what specific situations, and there is an entry from the Garys fishing log. These entries specify valuable information on how the fly is used and doesn't forget the fact that fly fishing is fun. The information in Caddisflies is as current and valuable now as it was in 1981. The entomological nomenclature of the Trichoptera has not changed -- the biology has not changed. The fly patterns and the ideas in Caddisflies are now the standard for this insect order. That original postcard offer in 1981 was the beginning of the Book Mailer -- it was also the launch for a work that has become one of the most enduring classics in modern fly fishing. Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes ••••••••••••••••••••• In between roll-on-the-floor, split-a-gut observations of things like Rufus the pack goat, an aluminum pram called the Slough Pig, and an incredible fishing dog named Chester, there is an amazing amount of information on how to fish mountain lakes. Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes is more than just a stillwater classic — it's such a wonderful blueprint on how to analyze a type of fishery that every fly fisherman should read it. There are twenty-six recipes for stillwater patterns, including the Variegated Midge Larva. by Gary LaFontaine Winner of the 1990 United Fly Tyers Book of the Year Award Winner of the 1991 Arnold Gingrich Memorial Award ~ The Dry Fly – New Angles by Gary LaFontaine The premise of The Dry Fly is simple -- if you understand the Theory of Imitation and Attraction you'll know how to choose the best fly anytime and anywhere. This work is the foundation of how to fly fish. It's the first serious book the beginning fly fisherman should read -- and in many ways its the last serious book the advanced fly fisherman should read. The fact that it's a tremendous amount of fun is just a bonus -- it's a "can't put down" page-turner. Reviewer comment: "Gary LaFontaine would make an adventure story out of the most mundane assignment, so when he's approaching an area in which he has a passionate interest, readers can expect the kind of mini-epic anecdotes you will find here." —Seth Norman, Fly Rod and Reel Softcover, 8 1/2 x 11 format, 308 pages, illustrations, black & white photographs, and color plates (#B160) softcover Price -- $29.95 quality softcover; 6 x 9 format; 128 pages (#B689) softcover Price -- $14.95 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Some people's idea of heaven may be streets paved with gold, but for me, if those streets aren't lined with books, there is something missing. -- Gary LaFontaine ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “River Rap" Guidebooks and Audio Tapes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now there is a definitive guide series to unlocking the secrets of these revered rivers. Plus — some additional package offerings and thoughts Well we did it, we've taken the plunge == repackaged and added additional item numbers to our fly selection. You can now order in packs of six or in packs of three. If you are ordering packs of 6 (the old way) use the letter "S" (for six) in front of the item number (these are $11.00 per pack), or if you want to order flies in packs of 3 (the new way) use the letter"T" (for three) in front of the item number (these are $6.00 per pack). Seems pretty simple -- we will get it right on our end eventually. Please bear with us, transition hurts. Also, new in the fly selection are the expanded colors and sizes on the EZ2C Mayfly (p. 24). We don't anticipate that you'll need this fly now, so the inventory will arrive in April and we'll fill pre-orders then. Jump start your spring fishing! The new EZ2C Mayfly patterns were identified by their common hatch names -- matching made easy. The EZ2C Mayfly has a parachute post made of hackle fibers for high visability on the water. The wings cant out at a 45 degree angle over the hook eye to ensure fish see this fly as well as you can. And we've used the magic of antron to trigger great results. We plan on introducing the Drunken Sailor pattern (p. 27) later this winter. If you have special orders for Gary's patterns that we don't stock all the time, Paul Stimpson is semi-attached to his vise right now. It takes about three weeks, but he is very happy to do any special order tying. Just call or e-mail us with requests. Paul has also put together tying instructions (see below) for the Enchanted Prince Nymph. I used this pattern religiously this summer and it's so great! (also see below) We keep adding to our Private Label Fly Selections hit list (p. 5) for your destination fishing. Our database of chosen flies for certain seasons and locations keeps growing -- and you are still ordering, so we think we may be doing something right -- or maybe Cyril just gets better with age (don't we all). We can cover your entire trip or just pick a pack or two; let us know if you have preference for wet or dries, we don't want you heavy on one type and light on another. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Paul Stimpson Talks Tying -Enchanted Prince HOOK: HEAD: TAIL: BODY: HACKLE: WING: I never seem to have the flies I need in my fly box. Since I tie commercially I never have time to tie my own, so several years ago I was preparing for a trip to the Madison River in Montana and was frantically tying flies the night before we left. My favorite nymph at that time was Gary LaFontaine's Twist nymph and my wife Char favored the Prince nymph developed by Doug Prince. While tying both of these flies it occurred to me to combine the two into one fly and save some time. I used Gary's "Double Magic" technique and twisted peacock and Antron dubbing together for the body of a Prince nymph. TYING STEPS: • Slide a gold bead on the hook and clamp the hook in the vise. • After tying on black thread, tie in brown goose biots for the tail. • Tie in several peacock herls and let them hang for the moment. • Wax several inches of the thread and touch dub orange Antron. • Twist the Antron with the dubbed thread and wrap for the body. (I don't use a rib like the original Prince because it mats the Antron fibers). • Wrap 2-3 turns of hackle for the legs. • Tie white goose biots on top of the hook for wings. (After tying off the white goose biots you may want to wrap a collar of peacock directly behind the bead to cover the tie down area.) • Whip finish We had great results with the new fly -- so upon returning home I called Gary to discuss the fly. It wasn't long before he had his diving team on the bottom of the Big Hole River in Montana, observing the new fly and comparing it to a standard Prince nymph. The diving results showed 3.5 strikes for the new fly to 2 strikes for the standard Prince. The Antron dubbing was reflecting more light and making it more appealing to the trout. Since the inception of the new fly I have had great success wherever I used it. With the combination of the "Double Magic" technique and Doug Prince's Prince nymph, Gary and I decided to name the new fly the "Enchanted Prince" (p. 24). °-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-° -°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°-°- Since this pattern was developed after Gary's books, it is not listed. It is shown on the LaFontaine Originals Video Vol. II (p. 6). From the Book Mailer staff, we would like you all to be aware that when Paul retires from his "real job" in just under a year (he is so excited!), his first form of play (other than fishing) is to publish a book he and Gary referred to as LaFontaine's Legacy. This will be a fly tying book and will include all of the patterns that Gary didn't get published in Trout Flies Proven Patterns. My husband and I hopped over to the Missouri near Townsend (MT) in early October. It was late afternoon and the fall colors were brilliant. I found a great pool and casted an Enchanted Prince Nymph to the top and worked my way down. I felt a tug at the end of a retrieve, it took a cast or two to catch the same drift. I knew I had him, but he was quiet. I started reeling in and walking back towards the bank. At one point I wondered if I even had the fish or if my imagination was working over time. As I pulled my line closer to the bank, I did indeed have a fish. And he didn't like the shallower water, and I didn't like realizing I had no net. We played for several minutes as I signaled my husband for help, he had left the net at the car… The fish eventually broke off my fly but not before we had a chance to admire his rainbow colors and hefty size. A nice fish for this novice. I used this nymph all summer -- it caught fish every time, this was just my favorite one. I'm still talking to this guy in my dreams at night. -- Cathy (at the office) - 21 - Air Head 6-pack $11 3-pack $6 << Clear Wing Spinner continued >> ~ the Clear Wing Spinner, with wings of clear Antron, was the first fly to use a "clear" material to match the wings of a spent mayfly spinner. This new streamer fly imitates an injured minnow. I'm sure some of Gary's research team had input into the design, but I don't have any information as to who, so we'll give Gary all the credit. The "triggering" key to this fly is predation. If a minnow or bait fish is sick or wounded, it will be the first one to be eaten by a trout. It's easily caught. The design features the off-set weighting that Gary has used on several other flies (i.e. Rollover Scud, Missouri River Sow Bug) and a plastic bead at the head of the fly to imitate the elevated head of the fish. That's the easy fishing. He had been fishing for two hours and could see boils around, but the fish were completely ignoring everything he was offering. He flailed his hat through the air capturing a random sampling and was faced with the same simple exasperating question: What are the fish taking? Half a dozen species of caddisflies crawled around in there. He relates that caddisflies can be confusing, with over 1,000 species identified across the continent, 300 alone in the state of Oregon and a river like the Deschutes holds about 150 species. That's why there seems to be no simple answer to the questions involving trout rising to caddisflies. But Dave likes simplicity in his fishing. and cast to the nearest rise. The water boiled pleasantly and soon I held in my hand a 2-pound rainbow that couldn't identify caddis species any better than I could. "The caddisflies in my hat ranged from size 16 to 12, and their colors varied from a light tan to a dark slate gray. I took the easy way out; I selected a dry fly that averaged the insects' size and color. I knotted it to my tippet, crept to the riverside, Dave talks more about size, color and form, but I found these observations to be the most relevant overall. This is a great bit of information for me to remember on the stream. Good job Dave! We alarm ourselves unnecessarily when we confront caddis, and we think that in order to catch trout with caddis imitations, we've really got to be able to identify them precisely. Nonsense. You don't have to identify the insects to genus, family, or even to caddis. All you've really got to do is look and observe the three key elements common to every insect: size, form, and color. Pick a pattern based on those three factors and it will take trout; no matter what species of caddisfly you are trying to match." - 31 - the Book Mailer PO Box 1273 Helena MT 59624-1273 PHONE: 1-800-874-4171 24 hours a day FAX: (406) 443-0788 anytime website: www.thebookmailer.com PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 32 MADISON, SD 57042 ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• The often-funny, sometimes-warped, never-boring, always-full-of-great-books | Fall/Winter 2003 Newsletter | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------He who laughs last, thinks slowest. Well by now you've probably noticed this Book Mailer format is a bit shorter than our past issues. I guess we'd better tell you why. I (Cathy) and Marcy (web queen) have purchased the Book Mailer from Gary's remaining partners and are venturing out into the great unknown as business partners. We both worked with Gary and we're as loyal to the Book Mailer as many of you (plus there's no dress code or cubicle, we can fish for "research" purposes during business hours, and when the phone rings it's you calling). Small wonder we prefer this job! We have lots of great ideas for the future and hope you don't mind this smaller format retreat to past issues. In light of all that, we're cleaning house on a couple fronts. We will be stocking fewer titles for the catalog, but offering every fly-fishing title in print (see p.5) and descriptions will be available on our website (just one of the short term, future goals -- watch the website for updates and sign up for the eBulletin). The print newsletter will feature only new titles and top sellers, which should give us extra space next time for more tips and goofy jokes. Since we're cleaning out the warehouse, this issue has a great selection of discounted books. We're also cleaning our house list. Gary did this every three years and that time is here again. The Book Mailer is only being mailed to customers who have purchased in the past three years. If you're reading this, you're in! If you're not . . . One area we'd really like to develop is fly patterns. We made a start by adding the option to order three packs of flies (see p.21), but we see lots of potential here and if you have "ideals" for the LaFontaine patterns, bring them on. Now is the time. ------------Wow, it's the holiday season again and we have just what you want. Spring Creeks by Mike Lawson is an awesome book (front cover). We're so happy for Mike, he really set his mind to getting this book done and he blew us away with the results. Dave Ames has finally followed up True Love and the Woolly Bugger with A Good Life Wasted (p.3) and it's great! I loved it. He has a hilarious"real life" story about fire ants and piranhas he shared with us at the trade show this fall, should we get him to tell it to you? The new René Harrop, Trout Hunter, is a true collectors item and Lefty Kreh just keeps getting better and better with his Ultimate Guide to Fly Fishing. There are some unusual titles with the Mind of a Trout and Instinctive Fly Fishing, but we think you are going to like what they are talking about. (all are on p.3) The revised edition of Figuring Out Flies is now named All About Flies by Chuck and Sharon Tyron (p.4). This is the title Gary was working on with Chuck two years ago . It's supposed to available this November! (but you know how that goes with publishers -- we're keeping our fingers crossed). We've put together a little beginning tying kit with the Danvise. If you know someone who wants to start tying, be sure to tell them about it (p.8). We are still awaiting the arrival of the new Hackle Nabbers (p.10), but are getting very close. The manufacturer just wasn't getting it quite right and the"tool man", Tom Trozera, won't settle for less than perfect. Hope to see these in a few weeks. And of course, we still carry all the great materials needed for Gary's patterns. The selections of sizes for furled leaders as been expanded, and we added the Fast-Sinking Fluorocarbon Furled Leaders (p. 12) -- wait till you read about these! I can't say enough about how much I like these leaders. The new 6- and 8-weight Stealth rods are a smash hit (p. 13). I have to say thank you to all the Stealth Rod owners. In my"newby" state of fly fishing, it is your comments and kudos about the Stealth line that keep it alive and thriving. You do a great job selling rods, keep up the good work. We hope you have a wonderful holiday and a great New Year. Look for us again in early winter, this issue ended just a bit too soon. Our best to everyone for the Winter season. ~ Cathy & Marcy (for the Book Mailer) - 32 -
