Community Nurses Named Among National’s Elite
Community Nurses Home Health and
Hospice is pleased to announce that it
has been named a Top Agency of the
2015 HomeCare Elite™, a recognition
of the top-performing home health
agencies in the United States.
Celebrating its tenth anniversary,
the HomeCare Elite identifies the
top 25 percent of agencies and
highlights the top 100 and top 500
agencies overall. Winners are ranked
by an analysis of publicly available
performance measures in quality
outcomes, best practice (process
measure) implementation, patient
experience (Home Health CAHPS®),
quality improvement and consistency,
and financial performance. In order
to be considered, an agency must be
Medicare-certified and have data for
at least one outcome in Home Health
Compare. Out of 9,718 agencies
considered, 2,431 are elite.
The award is sponsored by OCS
HomeCare by National Research
Corporation, the leading provider
of home health and hospice metrics
and analytics, and DecisionHealth,
publisher of the most respected
independent publication in the home
care profession, Home Health Line.

Community
Nurses’ Adult
Day Center
Celebrates
10 Years
It was 10 years ago last October that
the Community Nurses, Inc. opened
the doors of its Adult Day Center in
St. Marys. Established in 2005 by
Betsy Roberts, Peggy Prechtl, Bill
Orzechowski, Barb Paul and Deb
Dubler, the facility was designed as
a place for caregivers to take their
loved ones during the day while they
went to their jobs or took care of their
personal obligations.
“The Adult Day Center is a great
resource for people taking care
of their elderly parents or family,”
said Kathie Renaud, the center’s
coordinator. “Not only does it
offer caregivers a break, but just as
important, we give our clients healthy
meals, social interaction, and even
bathe them, if requested. Many
communities don’t have this type of
facility. Our area is very fortunate.”
A celebration with a band, dinner, and,
of course cake, was held on October
13th at the center, which is located at
625 Maurus Street in St. Marys, PA.

Nurses Services
care can be provided wherever home
is: an assisted living facility, a personal
care home or a nursing home.
Community Nurses, Inc. has been
serving the area since 1929 when the
Women’s Club first hired Rose Fleming
to visit the homes of the sick. Our
mission is to provide quality care and
services in the home and throughout
the community.
Community Nurses Home Support is
our non-medical service. It is designed
to help people live independently
at home. Personal care aides make
regularly-scheduled visits to clients’
homes to help with activities of
daily living, like house cleaning,
laundry, cooking, bathing and grocery
shopping. Services are available 24
hours a day, 7 days a week in the
client’s home.
To reach that mission, we have three
areas of service:
1. Community Nurses Home Health,
2. Community Nurses Hospice, and
3. Community Nurses Home
Support Service. This breadth
of services allows us to care for
patients across the continuum of
healthcare.
Community Nurses Adult Day Center
is also a service that falls under the
Home Support Services umbrella. The
Center provides a place for caregivers
to leave loved ones when they are
unable to be home alone. Many clients
come daily while their caregivers go
to their jobs. At the Adult Day Center,
clients enjoy social interaction and
activities designed to keep their minds
and bodies active. Hot meals are
served, and assistance with bathing
and dressing is offered.
Remember when you hear the name
“Community Nurses,” there are several
different services provided. They all
work together with one goal - to assist
people in our community to remain in
their own home
Introducing Our Newest Employees
Community Nurses Home Health is
our skilled service. Nurses, therapists,
social workers, nutritionists and aides
visit patients in their home to provide
nursing care, wound and ostomy care,
medication management, infusion of
medicines and flushing of PICC lines
and ports, education to the caregiver,
nutritional counseling, assistance
with social services and physical,
occupational and speech therapy.
A person often becomes a home
health patient upon discharge from a
hospital or by order of a physician who
recognizes the patient needs medical
attention in the home.
Community Nurses Hospice is a
service that offers medical care
and emotional support for patients
and their families when an illness
is incurable and life-limiting. The
Hospice goal is to help every patient
live each day as fully and comfortably
as possible. Most patients receive
hospice care in their own homes, but

“I was so grateful I kissed her hands,”
exclaimed Margaret Occhiutto.
She had missed her home support
aide, Kelly Bliss, when she had taken
time off for Christmas. It was a relief
to have Kelly back.
“She’s like my daughter,” said Marge.
Home support aides from Community
Nurses help individuals stay
independent at home by helping them
with activities of daily living. Kelly
does Marge’s housecleaning, grocery
shopping and laundry. She also helps
Marge get cleaned and dressed in the
morning.
“I can’t get out of the bath. I can’t
vacuum or mop,” explained Marge.
Without help from Community
Nurses, Marge would likely reside
in an assisted living facility. Instead,
Marge is still able to live in her own
home in Johnsonburg. Aides visit
three days a week for about four
hours. Marge also has a sister and
nieces who live nearby who help with
her care and take her to doctors’ visits.
In 2011, Marge fell on her front steps
and broke her hip. After a stay in the
hospital and another at Pinecrest
Manor, Marge was able to go home.
“It was wonderful there, but there is
no place like home.”
The Community Nurses provided for
her care after she was discharged from
Pinecrest, and Marge has remained a
home support client ever since.
Before her husband Siv died, he and
Marge lived the high life in New York
City. Marge was a bridal consultant,
and the shop where she worked was
featured in a magazine. She was also
an award-winning artist, working in
oils and watercolor.
Siv’s business took them to St. Thomas,
where they lived for a couple years.
The two were married for 42 years,
and when he passed, she moved back
to her hometown of Johnsonburg to
live near her family. She and her sister
are the only remaining siblings from a
family of 10 children, whose mother
emigrated from Italy.
“I never had children of my own, so
I dote on my nieces. But these girls
[from Community Nurses] have
become members of the family,” said
Marge.
