The students, PreK 3 through 8th grade, are challenged to grow in a manner consistent with their needs, interest and abilities, preparing them to live in an everchanging world as self-directed, caring, responsible citizens. St Mary Welcomes Back Students On the first day of school, August 14, 2014, the new cheerleaders did a welcome back pep rally in the gym. Everyone had a great time. After the pep rally and morning announcements, students were dismissed to their classes. Some classes met St Mary’s newest teachers: Mrs. King - 1st grade , Ms. Washington, -middle school math, Mrs. McHann – Pre-K3 aid, Mrs. Braquet – Pre-K4 and Kindergarten aid, Mrs. Hughes – librarian and Mrs. Slaughter – substitute. St Mary also welcomed the following new students: Pre-K3-Jude Abrego, Katheryn Boehme, Audrey Broussard, Emma Davidson, Mia-Lee Dimas, Benjamin Harris, Luke Laughlin, Matthew Nguyen, Haydn Saucier, Paisley Stelly, Braylon Stokey. McKinley Wallace. Pre-K4-Jude Breaux, Kaylor Heatherly, David Hughes, Easton Jones, Brielle Knapp, Carmen Magana, Brayden Moore, Suhana Rahman. Kindergarten-Preston Ewing, Eliese Gravett, Gavin Gravett, Gage King, Paisley Lenz. 1st grade-David Derosier, Thomas Quintero, Jaidan Redmond. 2nd grade-Anthony Magana. 3rd grade-Kaylea Gravett, Joann Krustchinsky, Elizabeth Summer Program Really Goes Places The St. Mary Summer Program started June 2nd and ended August 1st. This was a new service for parents and students of St. Mary and the community. The object of the program was fun with weekly field trips to places like Shangri La, Cops and Kids, NASA, Moody Gardens, Adventure Kingdom, Houston Zoo, Kemah and they went bowling. The Kelly buses were used to transport the children for the field trips. Teachers who shared their summer by working were: Mrs. Wimberley, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Bandiero , Ms. Eatman, Miss Kailey, Miss Monson and Mrs. Smith. There were 72 students registered for the program and most days there were 20 to 30 students. Students were able to bring their own lunch or buy from the cafeteria. By: Bryce McAllister/7th Grade The Cafeteria served hot dogs, hamburgers, tacos and some Wednesdays, there was pizza from Little Caesars. Wednesday was also water play day. Page 2 The Swarm News PHOTOGRAPHER: Ian McHann St Mary Cheers at Kelly Pep Rally On Thursday, August 22, our cheerleaders performed in the Community Pep Rally at Kelly High School in Beaumont at 5:30 p.m. All the feeder schools attended and their cheerleaders performed. This included St. Anne, St. Catherine, St. Anthony and All Saints. The Kelly High School Students Travel to D.C. Over the summer, a group of St. Mary students and parents went to Washington D.C. The particpants were Logan Russell, Bryce McAllister, Brycen Van Tassel, Munawar Rahman and Mrs. Smith. On June 2, these students took a plane to Washington D.C. and then they took a tour bus to the sites. They went inside the Capitol, the WWI, WWII, Korean War exhibits, and visited the corresponding memorials. They were also able to see the White House, Mount Vermont, and in Fort Kendrick they watched a show called the Twilight Zone. They were in D.C. for 4 days and returned to Orange, Texas on June 6. By: Elizabeth Johns & Bryce McAllister 7th Grade what to teach. Ms. Washington has only taught math. Ms. Washington discovered her love for math when she was in the fifth grade. She is not married and has no children, but considers each and every child she is teaching and has ever taught to be her “children”. She has taught at several schools as a teacher, and in some schools, StuCo Attends Summer Workshop Over the summer, the Student Council Officers (Shelby Smith, Megan Do, Elizabeth Johns, Adrian Willingham, Amber Lester and Krystal Lester) and National Junior Honor Society Officers (Nicholas Wilson and Elizabeth Doan) went to Austin Col- dance force and cheerleaders also performed. Overall, it was a fun event. By: Logan Russell/7th Grade More Than Just a Math Teacher Ms. Washington is our brand new math teacher, She says that she enjoys the faculty and her students here at St. Mary. Ms. Washington decided to teach because her third grade teacher taught her to excel in math. Ever since her third grade year, Ms. Washington knew that she wanted to be a teacher, but she didn’t know By: Ian McHann/7th Grade she was the assistant principal. Ms. Washington grew up in Port Arthur. As she grew up, Ms. Washington wanted to be a flight attendant. There was one drawback though…she is afraid of heights! Ms. Washington plans to continue teaching here at St. Mary. This is the first catholic school that she has taught at. Welcome to St. Mary! By: Elizabeth Johns/7th Grade lege in Sherman, TX for a leadership workshop. They stayed there for a week, and attended many group and breakout sessions. Each group had to create a school and mascot and present it to the whole group. More activities included group elec- tions, a fancy dinner, and a dance. Each of our students shared a dorm room with students from other schools. St. Mary Catholic School was only one of the few schools at the convention representing District 17. Page 3 Volume 2: Issue 7 Laney Vigil & Ariah Washington Cheerleading Changes for SMS By: 6th Grade lot of fun, but it’s hard work. They have to practice, practice, practice! The 8th graders went to cheer camp this summer and taught the JV squad all the things they needed to know. The Varsity Squad is: Elizabeth Doan, Joanna Henry, Megan Do, Shelby Smith, Krystal Lester and Jade Clark (Captain) The JV Squad is: Kaitlyn Orillion, Kylie Braquet, Elizabeth Johns, Jenna McCorvy, Amber Lester and Amiyah LeBlanc Mrs. Bandiero-Teacher of the Month St. Mary Catholic School is honored to announce Mrs. Beth Bandiero as our “Teacher of the Month” for September. Mrs. Bandiero was chosen for her dedication to her students and parents, her amazing coopera- tion and her tremendous pride in St. Mary Catholic School. Mrs. Bandiero has a tremendous love for her students and is an excellent volleyball coach. She was recognized at morning announcements and received Science Superstars Selected Six St. Mary eighth grade students were selected to be Science Superstars this year. Thomas Nguyen, O’Shan Mitchell, Nicholas Wilson, Megan Do, Krystal Lester and Shelby Smith attended Science Superstar workshops this summer, in By:Elizabeth Johns/7th Grade many special items, among them—a reserved parking spot, teaching supplies and personalized snacks. By: Munawar Rahman /7th Grade order to prepare to perform these experiments around the Golden Triangle Area. Each year, Dr. Michael Hoke selects students from the applications of students entering the eighth grade. Students are required to have great grades and out- standing behavior to apply. They must fill out an application, submit grades and teacher recommendations. They also must agree to maintain their grades and positive behavior. It is a great honor to be picked for the Science Superstars. Student’s Artwork Displayed in Austin Last school year, Dayne Seay was one of the students who won the “Treasures of the Texas Coast” calendar art contest, sponsored by the Texas General Land Office. Mrs. Smith thought that we needed more spirit so now you can be a cheerleader in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. The cheerleaders have a mer, Dayne went Austin where an enlarged version of his artwork was on display in the South Central Gallery of the Capital Extension. Dayne’s artwork will be featured in the 2015 Texas Adopt-A-Beach calendar. His original artwork is currently displayed in our school lobby. The soccer team started practice at the end of July and has been practicing four days a week ever since. They are getting ready for their first game against St. Catherine on September 2nd. The coach is Denise Willingham and the assistant coach is JohnPhillip Fuller. This By: Landon Acord/6th Grade year the team has three captains, Nicholas Wilson who is in charge of the defense, O’Shan Mitchell who is trying to master his goalie techniques and Elizabeth Doan who is a forward. This year we have 12 players Sarah Kusek, Jaci Doucet, Landon Acord, Laney Vigil, Laynie Wright, Mathew Erb, Carter Claybar, Adrian Willingham, Stephen Kusek, Elizabeth Doan, O’Shan Mitchell, and Nicholas Wilson. Their first home game is against Community on Sept. 11th; go there to support the Hornets. Volleyball Sets Up For An Awesome Year PHOTOGRAPHER: Logan Russell The volleyball team has been practicing all summer. Their first game is on September 2nd and is an away game against St. Catherine. Coach Bandiero says that the volleyball team will be awesome this year because she has five returning players from last year who are now in 8th grade. The A team consists of Krystal Lester, Joanna Henry, Megan Do, Shelby Smith, Jade Clark, Kaitlyn Orillion, Amber Lester, Lauren Abrego and Kylie Braquet. On B team we have Jonire Pete, Audrey Johnson, Olivia Grant, Sydney Schmitt, Mallory Huggins, By: Zack Keszeg & Jagger McCollum/7th Grade Lily Reidel, Montana Dileo, Jessica Hughes, Tallie Cooper, and Leeanne Luce. Their first home game is on September 11th against Community. So come out and support our volleyball team! Shelby Smith jumps up for the spike.
