Mary Gawlenski
Mary was born on Sept. 9, 1915, in
Quakertown, PA. Her father, Victor, came from
Poland and bought a farm in Quakertown. She
was the youngest of four children; she had three
brothers, Lewis, Michael, and Stanley. Her
mother died when she was three years old. Mary
attended “The Little California One-Room
School House” in Quakertown for eight years
where she made hot lunches for the children.
Mary met her husband, Leon, at the family’s
farm which she and Leon later renovated and
lived on for many years. They were married for
67 years and traveled the world together. They
were excellent Polka dancers. She had one
daughter, Victoria; two grandchildren, Mary Ann
and David, and five great-grandchildren. Mary
worked as a sewing machine operator setting
collars on shirts at Tuttleman’s in Quakertown.
Mary is a devout Catholic and was very active
in St. Isidore’s Church. This included forming
the Catholic Woman’s Club, starting the library
at the school, being its librarian, organizing
Christmas Bazaars, and publishing the church’s
cookbook.

receiving an award for 25 years
of service. She also volunteered
at the Senior Citizen Center and
the local hospital in
Quakertown.
Mary loved to play bridge,
crochet, and embroider, and
made many ceramic pieces over
the years. Mary also kept a daily

at “the farm”. She grew all her
own organic vegetables and
froze them to enjoy over the
winter.
Mary was an excellent cook

meals. She was always having
parties and picnics. Her guests
still talk about the food and fun.
She was an avid health and
fitness enthusiast. Mary was a
faithful walker and enjoyed
walking miles each day with her
