Showing Spirit on Laurel Day
Our hard-working Associates show their Laurel Spirit every day
of the year. Each June on Laurel Day, we celebrate that Spirit with a day
of fun, team building and recognition. This year, our facilities once again
outdid themselves with some very creative expressions of appreciation
and camaraderie. Associates at The Laurels of Summit Ridge enjoyed spa
treatments, a car wash and some fantastic food. It was a real circus at
The Laurels of Blanchester, complete with clowns and carnival games.
And once again, The Laurels of Bon Air, University Park, and Willow
Creek joined together for a day of friendly
competition at their annual Staff
Olympics.
No matter

Words of Thanks
Often, Laurel Health Care Associates go above
and beyond the call of duty, reaching out in the
communities they serve and demonstrating The
Laurel Way of Caring. Here are a few of the
letters, or excerpts of letters, of appreciation we
have received commending these Associates for
their extra efforts.

The Laurels of Hendersonville
In appreciation of The Laurels of Hendersonville, we would like to
express our genuine appreciation for the staff there. There are too many
names to mention but they all know who they are who took time to care
for Ted McKinney. They were never too busy. There at the last before the
end of his life they treated him with utmost dignity. Some went above and
beyond in showing compassion as caregivers. We were happy with his
stay and all the care he got there. We wanted you to know how thankful
we were for having Ted McKinney there at The Laurels of Hendersonville.

Highlighting
Positive Outcomes
Turns Guests into
Advocates
The Laurels of Steubenville
has found a charming way to
keep their visibility high in their
local community. Each month,
the facility highlights a recent
Guest as the “Guest of the
Month” in an ad featured in
the local newspaper. These
testimonials from Guests who
are doing well back at home
are powerful reminders of the
positive work we do for our
families and communities.
Last month, the facility
introduced Wanda Gosciski,
who successfully completed
rehabilitation at The Laurels and
is now back at home with her
daughter. Mrs. Gosciski says
of her experience at The Laurels
of Steubenville: “Everyone at
The Laurels treated me very nice
and you couldn’t ask for better
care. I especially loved the
therapy department, but everyone
was wonderful.”

High School Band Lifts Spirits
at Sandy Creek
Guests at The Laurels of Sandy Creek were entertained this summer by
the Wayland Union High School Band, directed by Kelli Smith. The Guests,
many in wheelchairs, were escorted to the front lawn to hear the band
perform. Many of the Guests were inspired to raise their hands and clap
during a stirring rendition of the Wayland Union fight song. The band plans
to come back again in the fall.
Pop Some Popcorn and Enjoy the Show
Guests at The Laurels of Coldwater had an extra treat at their weekly
popcorn party on July 18. Donna (Albright) Green, a local performer,
came to sing and entertain Guests with music from the 40s, 50s, and
60s. Green started her performing career as a child in the 1940s, singing
for local events and radio shows in
her native Ohio with her family’s
band, The Red Hats. She brought
her energy and musical skills to her
solo performance at The Laurels of
Coldwater. Guests rocked with Elvis,
“honky-tonked” with Loretta Lynn,
and enjoyed the music of Anne
Murray, Buck Owen, Patsy Cline,
and Kitty Wells.

Guests at The Laurels of
Hudsonville are doing their part
to beautify their outdoor spaces.
Guests enjoyed an afternoon painting

to enhance the courtyard. The facility
is working hard to upgrade this
much-appreciated outdoor living
area, which is used for a variety
of activities throughout the day
and evening.

The Laurels of Chatham and The Laurels
of Hendersonville Recognized for
Outstanding Quality Care
The Laurels of Chatham and The Laurels of Hendersonville have been
recognized as 2012 recipients of the Bronze—Commitment to Quality
award for their dedication to improving quality care. The award is one of
three distinctions possible through the National Quality Award program,
presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center
for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL). The program honors facilities across
the nation that have demonstrated their commitment to the quality
improvement journey.
“Each one of the award recipients has proven its dedication to
improving lives through quality care, and it is a privilege to honor them
with this year’s award,” said Governor Mark Parkinson, President and CEO
of AHCA/NCAL. “We congratulate The Laurels of Chatham and The Laurels
of Hendersonville on this achievement.”
Implemented by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, the National Quality Award
Program is centered on the core values and criteria of the Baldrige
Performance Excellence Program. The program assists providers of
long term and post-acute care services in achieving their performance
excellence goals.
The program has three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Facilities
begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze level, where
they develop an organizational profile with essential performance
elements such as vision and mission statements and an assessment
of customers’ expectations. Bronze applicants must demonstrate their
ability to implement a performance improvement system. A team of
trained Examiners reviews each Bronze application to determine if
the facility has met the demands of the criteria. As recipients of the
Bronze—Commitment to Quality award, The Laurels of Chatham and
The Laurels of Hendersonville may now move forward in developing
approaches and achieving performance levels that meet the criteria
required for the Silver—Achievement in Quality award.
“The commitment these facilities have made to quality care does not
stop with this benchmark award,” says Chick Stepahin, Chair, AHCA/
NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers. “The journey to quality
care requires dedication and The Laurels of Chatham and The Laurels of
Hendersonville have risen to the challenge.”
The awards will be presented to the facilities during AHCA/NCAL’s 63rd
Annual Convention and Exposition, October 7–10, 2012 in Tampa, Fla.
