SHELLANE OGOSHI
Head Coach • Third Season • Hofstra ‘07
HEAD COACH SHELLANE OGOSHI
Coach Shellane Ogoshi enters her third season as the head coach of the women’s voll
leyball
squad. The 2010 season was even better than the first season of 2009 for Ogoshi,
aas the Pioneers earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament with 20-13 overall record for
tthe year. A combination of leadership and youth helped propel C.W. Post to the big dance
w
with senior Marilena Guadagnini and freshman Makamae Namahoe earning All-Confereence nods.
At the conclusion of the 2010 season, Coach Ogoshi was named a Thirty Under 30
R
Recipient. The award was featured in the 210 April/ May edition of Coaching Volleyball
m
magazine. Shellane was one of three NCAA Division II coaches recognized for the award.
The 2009 season was a productive year for Ogoshi, as the Pioneers finished with a record
o
of 14 wins and 14 losses, earning her Coach of the Year honors within the Conference.
A
Also, two Pioneer players were named All-Conference Selections. Senior middle blocker
Kerry Heitner and Freshman middle blocker Kirsten Taylor represented the Pioneers.
Ogoshi spent one season as an assistant coach at her alma mater Hofstra University, where she assisted with all facets of the
program.
The Hawaii native put together a standout four year career for the Pride, as evidenced by her jersey retirement in the fall of 2008.
Ogoshi played in 118 matches during her career and tallied 4,597 assists and 1,660 digs. She was a two-time Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Setter of the Year (2005 and 2006) and also earned 2005 CAA Player of the Year accolades. The 2004 CAA Rookie of
the Year and a CAA All-Rookie team selection, Ogoshi went on to earn All-CAA first team honors in each of her next three seasons.
In addition, she was an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-Region pick as a sophomore and
was the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player in 2006.
In addition to her coaching stint at Hofstra, Ogoshi has also coached club volleyball with the Pakela Volleyball Club (Honolulu,
Hawaii) since 2004 and the TCA Volleyball Club (Hempstead, NY) since 2008.
A two-time ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Ogoshi graduated with a degree in International
Business and Finance in 2007 and currently resides in Levittown, N.Y.
JOSE BRITO
Assistant Coach • Third Season • Hofstra ‘07
Jose Brito begins his third year on the staff, offering over six years of prior coaching experience. Brito, a 2007 graduate of
Hofstra University, coached junior varsity volleyball at Hewlett High School and currently serves as a clinic coach and trainer at
Sportime in Bethpage, N.Y.
Brito remains a coach at the LIBA Volleyball Club, as well as coaching junior varsity boy’s volleyball at Uniondale High
School. He has a Bachelor’s degree in math and finished with his maters’s degree in Physical Education and is certified by the

saw her accumulate 44 blocks, including 21 solo
blocks. She will not only be counted as a top middle
player for the Pioneers at the net, but also try to fill
the void of a vocal leader and communicator left by
the 2010 senior class.
Incoming athletes include a pair of transfers, as
well as a pair of freshman. Junior transfer Emily
Hoehn (Kearney, Neb.) comes to C.W. Post after winning a NJCCA Championship at Western Nebraska.
Hoehn is looking to come in a fill the libero spot for
the Pioneers. Her hard work and intensity bring
needed variables, as well as her good court discipline
and strong personality. She also brings experience
to a generally young Pioneer squad, which will create
chemistry and show her strength as a team player.
Fellow transfer, sophomore Stephanie Schwarz
(Hoffman Estates, Ill.), will also look to figure into the
Pioneer rotation at the setter position.
Schwarz comes into C.W. Post after
redshirting at Easter New Mexico
University. She also comes from a
strong club team out of Illinois, Club
Fusion, which she was a part of for
three years. Her quick offense along
with consistency will be looked at as a
strong point of the Pioneer offense.
Freshman Heather Adams
(Centerville, Ohio) comes in adding
good height at the net in the middle.
Like Schwarz, Adams comes from a
good club team and is already demonstrating solid potential. Kaiulani
Kaalekahi (Waimanaio, Hawaii) also
comes to the Pioneers as a freshman,
looking to add depth to the setter and
libero positions. Her position flexibility and playmaking abilities should
work well for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers come into 2011 with no really weakness, establishing a solid core and adding variables
that should blend and create a good on court chemistry. Having depth and options at many positions will
allow Coach Ogoshi to juggle things around and find
the best fit for various situations.
The schedule for 2011 should prove to be another
competitive year for the Pioneers, as the season will
begin in tournament play at both Kutztown and West
Chester with an ECC and home opener game put in
between on Sept. 7 against Dowling. The 33 game
schedule includes 14 conference matches to go along
with 19 non-conference matches, including a rematch
from last year’s NCAA East Regional at Adelphi on
Sept. 27.

2011 SEASON OUTLOOK
Coming off a 2010 season that resulted in a NCAA
Tournament appearance, the Pioneer volleyball team
is looking for much of the same success in 2011. After
completing the regular season 20-11 and a fourth
place finish in the ECC standings, the Pioneers earned
a fifth seed in the NCAA East Region Tournament
and two players being named to the ECC All-Conference Teams. The team ended up losing the opening
round match of the NCAA Tournament to Adelphi in
five sets, however, the Pioneers showed some promise
for 2011 with some young talent despite the departure
of four seniors from the 2010 squad.
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) was one of the
two Pioneers named to an ECC All-Conference Team,
as she earned a spot on the Second Team after a solid
freshman year season. Receiving Rookie of the Week
honors twice during the season, Namahoe completed
the season second on the team in kills
with 292 and first with her 60 blocks.
The sophomore will be looked upon
to become another top performer on
the court, as she will be used in many
position changes and rotate along the
hitter positions.
Fellow returning sophomores,
Shayla Hixson (Honolulu, Hawaii)
and Jordan Schroer (Kailua, Hawaii),
are also going to be looked at as the
core of the Pioneer squad that led to
success of last year and help capture
that success once again this year.
Hixson is coming into 2011 with an
increase in explosiveness, as well as
her vertical that, which will help her
make the move to the outside. Schroer will rotate to the middle, offering a
good blocking set that saw increased
improvement during offseason training. The trio of
Namahoe, Hixson, and Schroer are expected to move
around on the court, as they count as the top attackers
returning from last year.
Last year’s team also returns three upperclassmen,
with seniors Andrea Nolan (Ridgefield, N.J.) and
Laura Garbarino (Nutley, N.J.) along with junior Lisa
Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) returning for their second
years in Pioneer uniforms. Nolan, however, will most
likely miss the 2011 campaign due to an injury.
Garbarino is going to be counted on for her excellent work ethic and dedication, looking to fill in wherever the team may need her. Her main position will
be in the middle, looking to add depth behind Delfs
but also adding a utility type to various positions on
the court.
Delfs comes into 2011 in good shape after a solid
offseason after adding depth to the 2010 season that

David Steinberg - President, Long Island University
Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution
since 1985. The son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he
was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in
England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on
a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian
studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary
degrees.
He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where
he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as
executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.
ADMINISTRATION
The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught,
lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His first book, “Philippine Collaboration in
World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the
Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major
textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “The Emergence
of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and
Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005.
Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when
Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies,
the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others.
He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. The couple
has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accomplishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.
Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post
Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal
scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008.
A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacific Whale Foundation
in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University,
and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post.
As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private
university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300
continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development,
admissions and recruitment, retention, financial aid, athletics, student affairs, public safety, and
buildings and grounds.
His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In
2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in
achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and field research opportunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior.
Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philosophy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the
University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of
Hawai’i: The Long Journey Back.”

Bryan Collins, Director of Athletics
Bryan Collins enters his sixth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Collins’
leadership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and
national levels of athletic performance and academics.
During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success.
Notable achievements include 26 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the
2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams.
ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION
This past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, men’s lacrosse,
softball all participated in NCAA tournaments.
C.W. Post boasts some of top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in
national polls. The Pioneers finished first in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup
standings for 2009-10 - the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and
field hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Off the field, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. Among the efforts since his
arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable
organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post
student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service.
Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as
well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic
achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the
Adopt-A-Faculty program.
During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete
Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual studentathlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic
success. The department also established an Academic Honor
Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade
point average.
Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox
Field as well as a brand new state-of-the art sound system for
the stadium. In addition, all of the outdoor athletic fields have
undergone improvements to their playing surface. The Pratt
Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a working
press row table for media and game operations staff.
A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins
played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the
recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s
student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifice in seeking to attain the
highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor’s
degree in Business Administration in 1987.
Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with their
son, Tyler (16) and daughter, Megan (11).
