TD SUMMER READING CLUB
REGISTRATION STARTS MONDAY, JUNE 29!
The TD Summer Reading Club is coming! Kids of all ages
can get ready for great books, fun programs and lots of fun
at both library branches during July and August.
This summer, we are challenging kids to see reading as
playing and by doing just that they can win outstanding
prizes! The Club encourages children to have fun
improving their reading skills throughout the summer by
rewarding children with stickers, weekly prizes and chances
to win a weekly grand prize. New this year, kids can track
their reading success online. When a child registers for the
TD Summer Reading Club, they are given a personal access
code that can be used to register online and track their
reading goals.
Prizes for this year have been graciously donated by: Bird Kingdom,
Cineplex Odeon- Seaway Mall, Coles- Seaway Mall, Marineland,
Niagara Helicopters, Niagara Parks Commission, Safari Niagara,
Seaway Mall and Zippy Zoom Indoor Playground.
AMPHITHEATRE ANTICS
WILL STROET AND THE
BACKYARD BAND
Tuesday, July 28: 11:00am @ Welland
Amphitheatre, Merritt Park, King Street
Get ready to boogie at the Welland
Amphitheatre! Will Stroet, the award-winning
entertainer and star of Will's Jams on Kids’
CBC television, performs a high-energy and
educational show with fun actions and singa-long choruses in English and French. Will’s
music inspires kids to be active, healthy, creative
and engaged in the world. Kids will be cheering
for libraries, loving their bikes and rallying for
vegetables – all while they’re on their feet and
dancing away. Will has received a West Coast
Songwriters Award, Parents’ Choice Approval
Awards and multiple nominations from the
Western Canadian Music Awards, Canadian Folk
Music Awards and SiriusXM Indies.
Thank you to the generous donation from The
Kiwanis Club of Welland for keeping this show
free for our community.
In case of rain, this event will take place at the Welland

by Jason Redshaw, Adult & Information Services
The library has numerous travel resources in its collection.
The collection includes all the major travel guides: Fodor’s,
Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Insight Guides, Eyewitness
Travel and Moon Handbooks. Geographic coverage of the
collection is wide ranging and includes Canada, United
States, Europe, Central & South America, Africa, Asia and
Oceania. Along with the travel guides are travel DVD’s

Amazing Planet, Rick Steves, National Geographic, Discovery
and Visions.
RIDE TO READ
JUNE 26 TO SEPTEMBER 6
Ride to Read is back again this year. Children ages 4-13
will have the opportunity to use the bus for free to get to
and from the library branches all summer long. Eligible
children will need a library card and will be required
to pick up a sticker at either branch to show they are
participating. If they don't have a library card, don't worry.
It's free to sign up. They need to bring a parent or guardian
and their government issued ID to the library and we can
have them reading and riding in no time.
Children ages 4-9 must be accompanied by a paying adult
(14 years and older). Children 10-13 are free and can
ride alone.
If you are more interested in local travel and activities this
summer, the library also has you covered. The library has
local travel guides and maps that include hiking trails and
biking paths.
Are you traveling overseas this summer or to a destination
where the locals speak another language? Try our feature
database Mango Languages and brush up on the local
dialect. For more details on Mango Languages, see the
article below.
FEATURED DATABASE
MANGO LANGUAGES
Mango Languages is a fun to use online language-learning
system that is free for all library patrons and can be
accessed anywhere with an Internet connection. Each
lesson combines real life situations and audio from native
speakers with simple, clear instructions. Mango offers
access to 60 foreign language courses and 17 English
courses.
In addition to traditional language courses, Mango offers
a variety of specialty mini courses, like Pirate, Medical
Spanish and romance courses. Mango can be accessed at the
library, remotely, or even on-the-go with apps for mobile
devices.
You can find Mango on the Welland Public Library website
in our Online Resources section under subject “Languages”
or “M” for Mango in our alphabetical listing.
You will need your library card number and PIN to access
Mango outside of the library. You can create an account to
keep track of your progress, or use the Quick Start feature.
If you have any questions, ask the staff at the Information
Desk or call 905-734-6210 ext. 2521.
