8TH GRADE JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT INSPIRE FIELD TRIP
On Tuesday, February 10th, ALL Labay 8th grade students will be
attending the 2nd CFISD JA Inspire Field Trip at the Berry Center. The
JA-Inspire Field trip is sponsored by Junior Achievement of Southeast
Texas. This event will help 8th graders prepare for their future
careers. Students will be allowed to meet
business people and learn about skills needed
for different types of jobs. Speakers from
different companies will talk about their jobs
throughout the day and students will be able
to see exhibits where companies will show
them what they do and the kinds of workers they need for the
future. The agenda will focus on careers based on the
endorsements Texas students select to create 4-year plans for high
school. The endorsements are STEM
(Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics), Business &
Industry, Public Services, Arts and Humanities and Multi-Disciplinary.
8th graders have been attending JA Inspire sessions taught in the
library during the fall semester to help prepare them for making
decisions about the endorsement they will choose in high school
and to help create their 4 year plan.
Permission slips will be coming home at the beginning of the 2nd
semester and must be returned in order for students to attend this
incredible event. Students will receive t-shirts from Junior
Achievement and will be fed lunch at the Berry Center. They will
also receive items from the exhibitors to take home with them at the
end of the day. All students will ride buses to and from the Berry
Center. We should return to campus around 2:15 pm.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
LOVE is in the air. That's right - Valentine's Day is just around the corner!
Labay will celebrate Valentine's Day on Fri, Feb. 13 by letting the students
order heart shaped lollipops and lollipop bouquets for their friends to be
delivered during 7th period and by letting students order carnations which
will be delivered during 1st period. To make this a success, 2 volunteers
are needed to sell the lollipops from Monday, Feb. 2 through Friday,
Feb. 6 during all of the lunches. (This is a yearbook fundraiser.) 3
volunteers are also needed to sell carnations from Monday, Feb. 9
through Wednesday, Feb. 11 during all of the lunches. (This is an art
club fundraiser.) Lunch times are as follows:
A Lunch 10:50 - 11:20
C Lunch 12:15 - 12:45
B Lunch 11:45 - 12:15
D Lunch 12:45 - 1:15.
Volunteers are also needed on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 1:30 to sort the
carnations so that they will be ready to be delivered Friday morning.
Please email Teresa Strong, VIPS coordinator, which day(s) and lunches
that you are able to help with at [email protected]. The students
really have fun sending and receiving the lollipops and carnations. Thank
you in advance for your help making this a success.

CHOIR NEWS……….
The Labay Varsity Women’s Choir has been
given a generous grant from the Target
Corporation to attend a dinner and the Houston
Grand Opera performance of “The Magic Flute”
on February 11th. This is an exciting opportunity
for our student’s to get to experience one of
Mozart’s most famous operas, from one of the most prestigious opera
companies in the nation. We are thankful that Target is able to provide
the finances for incredible educational opportunities.
The Labay Varsity Women’s Choir will be a featured
guest on the Cypress Falls High School Women’s Choir
Pre-TMEA Concert held on February 5th at the Foundry
United Methodist Church at 7:00 PM. The concert will be
free of charge and will also feature the Truitt Middle
School Varsity Choir.
The Labay 7th and 8th grade Choirs will participate in
the annual UIL competition held at the Foundry
United Methodist Church. The 7th grade choirs will
compete on March 2nd, the Tenor Bass Choir on
March 3rd and the Varsity Treble Choir on March 6th.
All of these choirs have been working diligently on
their sight-reading and repertoire in preparation for
this rigorous competition.

BAND NEWS
Solo &Ensemble Contest
All of the Labay Symphonic, Concert I and Concert II Band members are working
hard preparing small ensembles and solos for performance at the CFISD Solo &
Ensemble contest at Spillane Middle School on January 30th and 31st.
The students will need to arrive at Spillane at least 30 minutes prior to their
performance, and they are free to leave once their performance(s) is complete.
The students will need their own transportation to and from Spillane Middle School.
The attire for solo and ensemble is dressy. For boys, it would be appropriate to
wear dress slacks and a button-down shirt (tucked in and with a belt, of course).
Ties are encouraged and suits/sport coats are great as well. Attire for girls would
be dress pants and blouse, a dress, or skirt & blouse. All students need to look
nice and be in accordance with the dress code. Jeans are not allowed for this
contest.
We do encourage parents to go into the performance rooms to hear these
awesome ensemble performances. In the case of solos, parents are welcome if
the soloist is comfortable with the situation.
We will need parent help to supervise students in the cafeteria as they await their
performances. You will still be able to go to the performance room with your child if
you help us with this. Please let Mrs. Casillas know if you would be willing to help.

Our Beginning Band students have been introduced to the piano keyboard to help
them understand how scales are constructed using half step and whole step
formulas. The keyboard provides an important visual reference for understanding
these conceptsAs we move forward in the semester, the students

skills by using those scales to read new key signatures
and some may choose to experiment with creating and
notating their own compositions.

LABAY ART STUDENTS SUCCESSFUL WITH
RODEO ART
Congratulations to our art students who recently represented Labay
at our district rodeo art show. 8th grader Constanza Veronica
received a finalist ribbon, one of only 10 that were awarded to over
250 middle school entries!7th grader Malak Abdulrahman received a
1st place ribbon! Receiving 2nd place ribbons were 8th graders
Britney Nguyen, Vicki Rackler, and Oni Meeks, and 7th graders Julia
Tran, Lien Han, and Abigail Romeo!Receiving 3rd place ribbons
were 8th graders Eryn Castaneda, Eduardo Velez, and Juan Diaz!
These winning artworks along with rodeo art from across the district
will be on display at the CFISD Instructional Support Center until
January 28. Congratulation again to these hard working art
students!
OOPS!
6th grade student, Jair Andrade, was regretfully
omitted from the following article in the December
newsletter. Congratulation to Jair for having his
artwork published and we apologize for the omission.
Several Labay students will have their artwork published
in the 75th Anniversary Art and Literary Book. These students will be
recognized by Dr. Henry at a reception at the Berry Center on Feb. 3
The students are: Emily Yang, Savannah Jones, Anish Ganti,
Constanza Veronica Moreno, Vivian Vu, Anh Thu Ngo, Eryn
Casteneda and Jair Andrade. Congratulations to these students!

LABAY Students Enter Taylor Swift SCHOLASTIC
Writing Contest
Congratulations to Labay 7th graders Amy Sosa, Litzy Mata, Lilly
Nguyen, Ariel Raines and Viviana Gregory. These five young ladies
recently entered Taylor Swift’s writing contest sponsored by
SCHOLASTIC. Students were asked to write a one-page creative
essay or poem explaining how they “SHAKE OFF” the things that
can sometimes get them down in life. Entries from all 50 states will
be judged and winners will be announced at the end of January.

LABAY SCHOOL REPORT CARD
The State of Texas 2013-14 School Report Card for Labay Middle School
has been publically released and is now posted on our campus website.
This is a report required by the Texas Legislature and prepared by the
Texas Education Agency. It is to be sent to the parent or guardian of
every child enrolled in a Texas public school. The report provides
information concerning student performance on the State of Texas
Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), as well as information
on student enrollment, class size averages, and financial expenditures.
