The JA-Inspire Field trip is sponsored by Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas. This event will help 8th graders prepare for their future careers. Students will be allowed to meet business people and learn about skills needed for different types of jobs. Speakers from different companies will talk about their jobs throughout the day and students will be able to see exhibits where companies will show them what they do and the kinds of workers they need for the future. The agenda will focus on careers based on the endorsements Texas students select to create 4-year plans for high school. The endorsements are STEM(Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics), Business & Industry, Public Services, Arts and Humanities and MultiDisciplinary. 8th graders have been attending JA Inspire sessions taught in the library during the fall semester to help prepare them for making decisions about the endorsement they will choose in high school and to help create their 4 year plan. . Permission slips will be coming home at the beginning of the 2nd semester and must be returned in order for students to attend this incredible event. Students will receive t-shirts from Junior Achievement and will be fed lunch at the Berry Center. They will also receive items from the exhibitors to take home with them at the end of the day. All students will ride buses to and from the Berry Center. We should return to campus around 2:15 pm. There will be a Parent Information Night held at the Berry Center on January 15th at 6:00 PM. Parents are welcome to attend this meeting to see pictures and video from last year’s event, to get more information about this opportunity for your student and to ask questions. Student Lunches Students are very happy when their parents visit them for lunch or deliver a lunch for them at the front desk. We encourage you to do so. However, due to state law, parents are permitted to bring food only for their own child and cannot provide food for other friends of their child. Many students have medical considerations that prohibit any adult bringing them food except for their own parent. This extends to the sharing of large pizzas. Parents will no longer be able to leave food at the front desk for more than their own children. Thank you for your consideration of this important rule. Because reading is something that molds you and adds to your character, readers are proven to be nicer and smarter than the average human. According to a 2010 study, those who read have the edge as they truly are the wiser, more adaptable and understanding children. According to a study, “What Reading Does for the Mind” by Anne E. Cunningham of the University of California, reading provides a vocabulary lesson that children could never attain by schooling alone. Cunningham further states that readers are more intelligent due to their increased vocabulary and memory skills, and they can communicate more thoroughly and effectively than the average non-reader. The more people read, the more they improve their ability to connect with others and the easier it is to understand the people around them. The survey will provide our school with important feedback regarding parent involvement, academics, communication between home and school and other topics that affect the success of our students and our school. The survey is important because it helps us to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Law that governs Title I schools. Your student will be bringing home the survey during the week of January 12. Completed surveys must be returned to Labay no later than Jan. 30. Wishing our Labay Community… A Happy Holiday Season and a Joyous New Year! CHOIR NEWS……….. Since the goal of Soccer Start is to introduce select students to the game who do not participate in club soccer, students who have participated in any organized club soccer league since August 2014, (Fun Fair Positive Soccer, YMCA, etc.) are not eligible to participate in the program. For those of you who have been involved on a campus where the Soccer Start Program has been built, you have seen the incredible influence that the program has on the students who participate. Once the season starts, you will likely see dramatic changes in the academic performance and behavior of many of the players. The players’ grades and behavior will be monitored, and they must meet specific guidelines in order to play in the weekly games. There will be a mandatory parent meeting On January 21st for athletes who are interested in trying out. Tryouts for those who qualify will be held January 27th-29th. If you have questions about the program, please email Bridget Pearce at [email protected].
