The following recordings consist of renditions from Older Scots into Modern Scots with the intention of making the work of
Robert Henryson more accessible in the first instance to anyone who is unfamiliar with Middle Scots. These versions are
carefully made so that the rhyme and rhythm are preserved. Those involved are skilled in poetry and the Scots language and
the final versions have been scrutinised by Professor Jack Aitken, former editor of DOST. These readings should form bridges
between Modern Scots and the Middle Scots of an illustrious makar.
Robert Henryson, The Makar
This cassette was recorded for The Society and recalls the themes of Professor Rod
Lyall’s inaugural address on his being elected Honorary President. A fine introduction
to Henryson’s work with helpful analysis of his genius.
The Trial of the Fox and The Preiching of the Swallow
Read by Bob Smith and George Bruce who each contribute personal introductory
commentaries.
The Two Mice and Robene and Makyne.
A free translation of the story of The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse introduced,
